The Stock Check – Gameweek 28 – Sunday

Harry Kane limps off out of Spurs’ FA Cup win over Millwall with an ankle injury as Fantasy managers fret on his availability for the run-in. In his absence, Son Heung-min fires a hat-trick in the 6-0 rout, while Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli grab a goal apiece. Elsewhere, Georginio Wijnaldum delivers again, and Ashley Barnes boosts his third-forward credentials as Liverpool struggle to see off Burnley at Anfield.

On the Rise

Georginio Wijnaldum
In a Gameweek where many loaded up on Liverpool’s pricey front three, it was left to a couple of differentials to come to the fore at home to Burnley.

Transferred in by 12,000+ and 5,000+ respectively for the reduced programme of fixtures, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can grabbed a goal apiece as Jurgen Klopp’s side eventually saw off a stubborn Clarets outfit.

While Can’s strike was his first since Gameweek 14, the Dutchman’s leveller maintained a fine run of form that has produced three goals and two assists in his last six appearances, blanking on just one of those occasions.

With Philippe Coutinho looking out-of-sorts and Roberto Firmino missing out with a knock today, Wijnaldum – at 7.5 and owned by just 1.6% of managers – may well emerge as a mid-price differential for the run-in.

Once next week’s visit to the Etihad Stadium has passed, the Reds are handed home encounters against Everton, Bournemouth and Palace, in addition to trips to Stoke City and West Brom, in the subsequent five.

Ashley Barnes
Having served a one-match suspension in the previous Gameweek, the Burnley striker made an immediate return to the first XI alongside Andre Gray up front.

Barnes’ opener once again highlighted his appeal as a budget third striker to be called upon off our benches –priced at a mere 4.5 in FPL, he now has four goals and a pair of assists in his last 11 league outings.

The lack of a double Gameweek further down the line dents his appeal, yet with Sunderland, Stoke and Middlesbrough in the next four, Barnes should continue to offer value for money over the short-term, at least.

Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli
While Harry Kane limped off early in the 6-0 thrashing of Millwall, the Spurs midfield duo show just why they both occupy a place in the top five FPL midfield standings.

Handed a role amongst the subs, Eriksen climbed off the bench to replace the stricken Kane and helped seal Spurs’ place in the last four of the FA Cup by grabbing a goal and two assists, while Alli delivered a goal and assist to score for the third home match in succession.

Despite failing to net for the last 11 Gameweeks, Eriksen has kept his tally ticking over with eight assists, including four sets of double-digits. Alli, meanwhile, has netted an impressive ten times during that period to lead his team-mate by 11 FPL points.

While the concern over Kane’s injury escalates, the upcoming schedule will ensure that many turn to Spurs’ midfielders regardless as Mauricio Pochettino’s side prepare for a fine run of fixtures that sees them host Southampton, Watford and Bournemouth in the next six and also travel to Burnley, Swansea City and Leicester City.

Son Heung-Min
Three goals and an assist in the Millwall demolition suggests that the Korean could ultimately prove the main beneficiary from a possible spell on the sidelines for Kane.

Initially tucking in alongside Alli in the central support roles behind Kane, Son thrived as a result of Spurs’ enforced reshuffle, with Pochettino initially overlooking summer signing Vincent Janssen as a replacement.

There are no doubts that Alli and Eriksen are the safest options amongst the Spurs midfield contingent – particularly if Spurs continue with a 3-4-2-1. Yet today’s performance indicates that Son – priced at 6.9 and owned by only 3% of FPL managers – could now emerge as a viable alternative should Pochettino’s star striker be ruled out for any period of time.

In Decline

Harry Kane
The Spurs frontman lasted just ten minutes against Millwall earlier this afternoon before being forced off with an ankle problem, potentially throwing the plans of Fantasy managers into disarray.

Just 24 hours after the previous deadline passed, Kane had already been acquired by 34,000+ new owners in light of the form that saw him serve up 12 goals and three assists in the previous ten Gameweeks.

Bearing in mind that Kane missed seven weeks (and five Gameweeks) of the season with an injury to his right ankle, a repeat of the same complaint would have a significant impact on how we assess both Spurs and our three-man frontlines.

Indeed, his manager’s post-match comments sounded somewhat ominous for the striker’s 21.4% ownership after he left the stadium on crutches:

“He twists his ankle – the same ankle as it was before against Sunderland. Now we will wait and assess tomorrow and wait and see. Today it’s difficult. It’s a similar situation to Sunderland. We need to assess him today it is difficult to give you a real level of how he is. We hope it’s not a big issue, but it looks similar. It’s sure it will be difficult for him to play against Southampton but we need to see what happens in the next few days. Every time something like this happens and before the scan, he immobilises with a [protective] boot.”

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic banned for the next two Gameweeks and Sergio Aguero mustering two goals in his last ten league fixtures ahead of three tough Gameweeks against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, our premium options up top are already limited. A potential stint on the sidelines for Kane may well see many now look to utilise a 3-5-2 set-up and spend big on re-acquiring Alexis Sanchez in a five-man midfield.

Philippe Coutinho
Subbed off before the hour-mark, the little Brazilian’s toils continued against the Clarets.

Despite being devoid of Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp still chose to replace Coutinho after an ineffectual display saw him fail to produce a single shot on goal or create any scoring chances.

Frustratingly, the former Inter man boasted some strong underlying numbers ahead of this one – firing more goal attempts (20) than any player in the previous four Gameweeks, he was drafted in by 103,000 FPL managers last week.

Those new owners may already be reassessing that decision, with today’s blank taking Coutinho’s run to one goal in his last ten league appearances.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Unfortunately i think Boro will not avoid the relegation.Very tough fixtures and they don't look good.To reach 40 points they must get at least 16 points from their 6 "easy" games(Swansea (A),Hull (A),Burnley (H),Bournemouth (A),Southampton (H),Sunderland (H)) and propably get a point against the big teams. In the same and maybe worst position is C.Palace.The third one close to relagation according to fixtures it's between Sunderland ans Swansea.

What does the Chelsea vs Man Utd Fa cup clash mean for Dgws is one outcome better than the other?

If Man U lose, they would only have to find an extra non 34/37 slot for one game (Southampton v Arsenal)

I think you'll find that's incorrect. If Chelsea lose there's absolutely no reason why the missing Watford game can't be played in GW37.

If United lose (as I hope) then they should have a DGW34 pretty much for sure though. Although it's impossible to know which games, the 2nd game could be either of the two outstanding.

Could be either. Think they would try to get as much of the catchup games played in 34.

Why? All postponed games that will need re-arranging will be known, so doesn't matter what GW they were postponed from?

GW37 already has 10 + midweek DGW games
GW34 will be 6 + midweek games so if they can get 5 in midweek.

Rather 6 + 5 vs an extra game in 37.

                      Doesn't really matter.
4 blanks in 34 on the weekend for the 4 FA Cup SFs.
Can squeeze 5 games midweek vs 4 in the midweek to help for 37.

Ok, so I think you are saying (which I agree with) there will be 5 midweek games in 34, and 5 in 37.

But it makes absolutely no difference if, say, the 5 GW34 games you have in mind are swapped wholly schedule-wise for the 5 GW37 games you have in mind?

I work in Human Resources....long time. If you need a job, and go on the interview, then (fake it and) show enthusiasm. Research the job and the company in advance to demonstrate your interest. Be engaged. You can always continue your job search while gainfully employed, and then quit if you find something better. You may also learn to like this job. This is all if you decide to go for it, and only you know how badly you need a paying job. Good luck.

Antonio and Barnes?? Utd, Arsenal and SOU have 2 dgw you have 1 player. Don't see the point in doing a WC and knowing you have to make transfers or take hits, hence don't do before we even know the schedule.

Eriksen or Mane out for Sanchez -4p?

Feel that Alexis needs to get back in my team. I was going for Mane before this Kane injury which is bad news for Eriksen.

    Thoughts please?

3 different answers, its hard. The funny thing is that Liverpool and Mane plays better against topteams. Man City and Everton next.
Eriksen got Southampton(H), Burnley(B) in those games. Its weird to take out Eriksen before a homegame really.

That Kane injury made everything more difficult

Tell me about it. I set my team up ages ago with 2 Everton defenders, specifically for GW28. What happens? One is unexpectedly dropped. One plays and is injured. The dropped one comes on. And somehow I manage a total of 2 points from an Everton clean sheet. 😕

Am I right in thinking no matter the scoreline tomorrow, United can't have a double in GW34... their games in hand being City and Soton

City being in semis means their GW34 fixture against WBA will most likely be pushed to midweek. Chelsea beating United means their match vs Southampton likely gets moved to midweek after semis.

A bit undecided with this and maybe I can get some opinions. 1 FT, 3.6m in bank.

    Heaton
    Alonso Coleman Baines
    Mane Alli Siggy Phillips
    Aguero Lukaku Llorente

    Jaku McAuley Fletcher Robertson

    A) Phillips > Eriksen
    B) Phillips > Pedro
    C) Phillips & Aguero > Sanchez & Gabbiadini -4
    D) Phillips & Mane > Sanchez & Pedro -4

I'm just inside top 4k so I guess Eriksen is a safer option than Pedro?

  16. Jay_

Thinking about wildcarding, main worry is fielding 15 doublers for a BB in 37 and missing out on the ones with the best fixtures. My core would be this

      DDG Pickford
      Alonso Walker Valencia Yoshida ***
      Sanchez Hazard Alli *** ***
      Gabbiadini *** ***

*** Coleman Siggy King Deeney Lukaku *** Are the ones that would be in for now but could be transferred out to make way for quickly announced doublers (32/33) and doublers in 34, 37

I'd be happy with that core until end of the season if they all double in 37. Still a bit confused though so two questions...

      1) Do those 10 core players have a dgw37 no matter what?
      2) Any players not in that core that I'll have trouble getting in 37 that have a tasty looking double on paper?

DDG, Valencia for sure. Most likely Ibra (in Lukakus spot) And probably a Boro defender (Colemans spot) and one more mid whoever has a double in (King spot)
So 5 if I'm right that a Chelsea win would give United, Boro, Palace a double?

Thanks TM, so if I went that way, after 34, I'd have to turn Deeney, the Boro defender and the two floating mids to BB'ers. Win/win with the Chelsea boys I suppose, either a juicy dgw34 or all in ready for dgw37.

Ugh. Does the club have a say in which fixture is scheduled when? United have City(a) from GW26 and Southampton (a) from GW28 to be rescheduled. Not necessary that the first DGW will have the first postponed fixture, right? Could be either of the two and we can't make any educated guesses, correct?

Seeing S'ton is the busiest of the 3, S'ton/Man Utd is likely in 34 imo as Arsenal/S'ton will be by itself. S'ton/Chelsea could be moved back to midweek also.

I think that the home team has the most say, but they have to consult the other team, the league, Police etc.

                    Kane + Coutinho to?

                          Kane out, maybe Costa in
Baines has been frustrating but you have players to wait a week to shop him out

                          I'd hold the WC

                    Currently squad of
                    Heaton/Pickford
                    Alonso Coleman brunt Ollson friend
Firmino Alli siggy Fraser de roon
                    Llorente aguero Lukaku

                    Have money for Fraser + Kun--> Costa +Sanchez (-4)
Surely that's the best option? I'd have a pretty neat midfield after that too

I have Sanchez Haz and Mane and expensive defence. Could not afford that could hardly afford Kaku > Ibra. But the frontline you suggest could be nice just not something I can do easily.

I think Lukaku is maturing into a top striker at the same level as Kane, Costa, Zlatan. Players like that you ride with through the poor fixtures. I had assumed he'd leave after next weekend but with Zlatan and (probably) Kane still unavailable I might just hold for the great home fixtures in GW32&33.

                      Solid
Perhaps Pickford ahead of Heaton? Its a tough one anyways, just that Burnley are away and all
Also, with that FT, maybe shipping Baines/Brunt? Valencia is probably your best replacement (that you can afford)

You could play your WC early and base it on those (likely) to have DGW's in 37. That'll should also cover a few players with DGW's before that too (Ars Utd Soton) It doesn't look like those early doubles will be that appealing, so a full entitlement of players from those sides is far from paramount.

S'ton have to play Chelsea, MU and Arsenal as long as Chelsea win in the 2 DGW plus another. Chelsea will have 2 spots and along with United. Arsenal have 3 games to catch up.

Ah right. Thanks for explaining. I did not check the games that will get blanked due to FA cup SF. So we will are more than likely to have extra DGW other than the big ones on 34 and 37.

Anyway once today's match is over (If Chelsea win) FA and PL should be able to schedule everything right? All teams who have 2 matches to be rescheduled should get them in 34 and 37. Arsenal and Soton can play 2 of their matches in 34 and 37 and should be able to reschedule their 3rd match as well because they are not in Europe.

Is there anything wrong with that line of reasoning?

Would you go Cech or DDG (double up with Valencia) in a WC team gents?

Pickford as back up, don't want two expensive keepers. The one I choose will play every week.

max the season ticker out for the rest of the season and sort by defence & diff. theres nothing to choose between your two, but theyre also both in the bottom half of the ticker. spurs are top.

Cheers, yeah, think it's a very close. Tempted to double up DDG & Valencia atm. I think Jose has more chance of tightening things up than Arsene has.

I'd like to offer a small recommendation.

Listen to Jarvish about the DGWs. He knows more about it than any so-called "expert" whose main expertise is in making pretty spreadsheets. He has also provided great advice on the subject to the FFS community voluntarily for a number of seasons. Until FFS decided to employ someone with less knowledge but better Excel skills.

I think it's a shame but what do I know? Style over substance it seems to me.

Anyway, listen to him. He knows his stuff.

When chips first came out Jarvish wrote a brilant article on the subject which became the template for how most of us use them. Knows his stuff.
