The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 29

Alexis Sanchez is taking his turn as the latest heavy-hitter to cause us consternation.

Brought in by more than 91,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of today’s trip to West Brom, the Chilean produced a typically superb goal for the Gunners that, ultimately, was to prove a mere consolation.

Interrupted by recent postponements, his first half strike in the 3-1 defeat means that Sanchez has now provided a goal or an assist in eight of his last nine Gameweeks – a record that ensures he remains the top scoring FPL asset.

An inevitable transfer target with Arsenal due to play another 11 matches over the remaining nine Gameweeks, today nonetheless provided further food for thought for those holding or considering a Sanchez acquisition.

His performance at The Hawthorns started so brightly – the goal punctuating a superb opening period of the game for Sanchez, full of endeavour and neat flicks.

If there were any concerns surrounding his performance levels dipping as a result of recent speculation surrounding his future at the club, they were dispelled in those opening 30 minutes

Then came the clattering challenge from West Brom’s James McClean, a tackle that delivered a blow to the ankle that perhaps should have seen Sanchez immediately withdrawn.

Instead, he played on until half-time to emerged for the second period.

Unable to impact on proceedings as the match slipped away from Arsenal, Sanchez was clearly affected by the injury, eventually giving way on 78 minutes.

A forlorn Arsene Wenger gave a brief verdict on the injury post-match, simply stating that Sanchez’ ankle “doesn’t look good”, later describing it as in “a terrible state”.

Due to depart with Chile for two World Cup qualifiers, including a vital clash with Argentina, we surely won’t have long to wait until we have a fuller prognosis, with Wenger insisting that if there is ligament damage, he will not travel.

But as we know, Sanchez is a player who refuses to bow to injuries. A factor behind his second-half appearance, his desire to play through pain will also doubtless govern the decision to depart to Chile.

Wenger and his Fantasy owners will then face a nervous wait for Sanchez’ return ahead of a Gameweek 30 clash with Manchester City.

But, there are also further concerns surrounding Arsenal’s form and confidence. On today’s evidence, Sanchez will need to carry Arsenal to victories over their remaining matches.

While this would seemingly guarantee him appearances, if fit, over the remaining 11 matches, we perhaps have to question whether his points output can be maintained.

With Sanchez subdued, the Gunners faded badly in the second period, created little and mustered just two efforts on target all match.

Even Sanchez, for all his incredible talent as a player and Fantasy asset, may struggle to go on producing in an Arsenal side so bereft of confidence and creativity.

Wenger’s press conference comments, promising an imminent end to the speculation surrounding his future of the club may now be key to a revival.

That will no doubt be the focus for the media over the international break, leaving us to monitor Sanchez’s fitness and assess whether the alarming Arsenal malaise can be lifted so that the season’s ultimate heavy-hitter can truly shine and deliver.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sounds good asong as they're all fit. Palace have terrible fixtures and they couldn't even score against Watford. Prefer Alli to Eriksen, he carries the greater goal threat.

Can always do these transfers at separate times, try to wait till after the ib if you can

0.1 short of Alli. I wanted Alli as well. Hopefully Coutinho scores well today and rises over the international break. I could get Hazard for a week to fit Alli in. Chelsea face Palace at home next.

Rank in order of points scored between now and the end of the season, disregarding price and taking DGWs into account

Do you think the game may be better if it was a bit more stripped down?

    No Wildcards
    No Chips
No price changes or maybe less of them

I think in many ways it would make the game more competitive and a challenge when you don't have the magic fix my horrible team button

This, its a business model still and entertainment is needed in form of chips, price rises for the 'average' player (hate using word casual). Agreed would be better for more serious players but ad revenue etc is king

One should understand all the add ons relate to people keeping interest. The dead teams are biggest problem to the site and the powers that be are looking for continuation of interest to get more hits year round. It is no fluke a WC is available halfway through the season.

Well I am not sure I agree with this. There are many fantasy football games out there. This is the official one and therefore the biggest but Sky etc don't have wildcards and seem to manage to get people to visit their site effectively. I don't think they are the kind of firm which would not try to make as much money as possible from their product

It can be funny watching your friends bur any of these chips inc wildcards. I just think it would be a better game without them.

A wildcard is often a good way of screwing up your team as well as improving it

I don't like any chips thst can be used strategically. The best way to keep everyone interested is to make the game bout footy knowledge not fpl knowledge. Hate beating mates by miles just coz I know bb tc need dgws to be maximised

It's not obvious, though. I saved my TC for Kun DGW (like I had last season) and got an extra 9 pts to show for it. I had higher scoring regular captains in the 2-3 weeks either side of it.

I wasn't happy when the chips came in, but they all add an extra dimension to managing the game correctly (though I'm still annoyed that it's taken me until this week to overtake the casual in my ML who got TC points for Sanchez's hattie after putting the armband on the non-playing Wilfried Bony).

Price changes are essential to stop everyone ending up with the same template team. Building TV can be essential to overhauling a big lead in the longer term.

    Costa/ Llorente/ Lukaku

He's trained all week but not with the team...hopefully play

“Roberto will be well recovered. He’s training already. He’s trained the whole week, but to involve him in team training made no sense so far. If he can be involved in team training on Saturday then physical-wise he has no issues because it’s good for him.

“He has played nearly the whole season so far, so if he has one week with more treatment than training and another week with light training for him, then yes, he would be completely OK.”

“It’s the first time in my career as a manager when I feel that now is the moment you have to see yourself like a manager. That’s the first time. For the other ones, I was so lucky managing and training big clubs. Now is the first time I want to help the team, so people say: ‘Wow, Pep could do that again at a team in England and at Manchester City’. I love this club and want to be here for a long long time. I want to try to do it.”
Despite their exit from this season’s UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and sitting 10 points adrift of English Premier League leaders Chelsea, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is relishing the chance to prove his worth as a coach at his current club

Maybe because of the rule of home grown player. If City didn't loan Hart then they might have bought defender which were not home grown player

Pep has really made some bad choices this season. Had it been some other manager like Pellegrini or Mancini, the board would have gone mad at them.

          It's not official yet.
If it's confirmed, Gameweek 34 will be a:
          Blank GW for WBA
Single GW for MCI (vs MUN)
Double GW for MUN (vs bur+mci)

Really hoping we receive the news of the dgw over the break. It seems the perfect time to wildcard.

        - Clear the deadwood from GW28
        - Set a clear plan for the DGWs
        - Take advantage of the fixture turn

It seems to me those who wildcard now can make up to a 50-100 point swing on those who don't. There will also be the knowledge to plan for the upcoming doubles and also plenty of time to change players due to form and injury to take advantage of the bench boost.

The way I see it, bench boost will be played the week most teams have a dgw. That potentially leaves arsenal and Southampton as TC candidates for the remaining dgws. And i cant see a clear TC in either of those teams. Even if sanchez was fit

No neither of those teams are ideal. Which is part of the reason so many of us went early with Aguero, which didn't work out fantastically but for me at least was slightly better than the disaster of Lukaku last season.

Hopefully when the fixtures are finalised you will at least see a couple of fixtures together which will narrow it down to a club for you

That is utterly ridiculous. The number of games remaining is irrelevant. The only things that matter are the fixtures in the week you play TC and the motivation and form of the teams at that time.

Not quite. The more number of fixtures remaining means the more dgws to pick to use your TC on.

Depends on the difficulty of the fixtures. It's more about having the right player at the right time. I think Chelsea should be a better option.I am not sure about 37 though.

For me I'd be a little concerned with Chelsea that week re motivation and rotation, given they will likely have the league wrapped up by then.

City though should still be motivated - esp if top 4 isn't secure.

I'm v wary of future Man Utd dgwks given their schedule. Even ibra could be rotated - plus their dgwk 34 looks awful anyway (bur mci).

I mentioned motivation above. But sometimes a team will cut loose after securing the title, it cuts both ways.

Those 2 teams in GW37 look like having the preferable fixtures as it stands. We'll see how it looks when we get there. 🙂

I remember in the 2014/15 season when they won it with 3 games to spare they lost heavily to wba with a much rotated side. Beat Sunderland tho and also drew with Liverpool.

I'd think Costa should be safe if the golden boot charge is on.

I worry about the likes of Alonso though. Gwk 37 looks a perfect time for the fringe players to come in.

Costa could score vs Palace (H) and City (H).

And I would expect Stoke and Sunderland to sit deep at the King Power - and Vardy is better when there are spaces behind the defence so...

Could go either way I think.
Costa is safest, Vardy could be more explosive or disappoint.

Vardy for me, far more explosive than Costa and the next 2 fixtures are great for Leicester. Will be keeping my finger off the button until IB is over and the previous match pressers have taken place in GW30, don't care about price rises.

            .5 in the war chest.

Still early days but depending on how Kun goes he may stay or go but will most likely become Ibra when he's available. Exact money to do Llorente to Gabbiadini but will hold off until internationals are over.
Baines to Rose looks nice at some stage too.

            Thoughts?

            Heaton
            Alonso / Baines / Valencia
            Mane / Alli / Sterling / Sigurdsson
            Aguero / Lukaku / Llorente

              WC:

              Pickford - Jaku
              Alonso - Valencia - Walker - Yoshida - Barragan
              Alli - Pedro - Sigurdsson - Sanchez - Sterling
              Defoe - Costa - Gabbiadini

            Heaton -- Grant
Valencia Coleman Robertson -- Stones Mcauly
Alli Mane Siggy Barkley -- Fletcher
            Kaku Lloriente Kun

A: Barkley (two tough fix before two good fix) >> Son/erik/Tadic/Mahrez
B: Fletch >> King...and bench barkley for the two tough games
            C: Stones >> Yoshida...and bench coleman (liv)
            D: Combine A and C for a hit
