Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Internationals – Sunday

Jermain Defoe grabs the headlines, but Jamie Vardy catches the Fantasy eye as England make fairly light work of a defensive Lithuania.

Scotland and Northern Ireland also win, but there’s an injury scare for Diego Costa ahead of Spain’s friendly in France tomorrow night.

Here’s how Sunday’s action unfolded.

England 2 Lithuania 0

A regulation win for England was lifted, to a degree, by the opening goal from Jermain Defoe, the international return of the Sunderland striker described by his manager Gareth Southgate as ‘a great story’.

But the main Fantasy narrative was provided by England’s second scorer of the evening, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

His cool finish from an Adam Lallana pass was one of a man whose form and confidence has returned – much like his club side – just in time to capitalise on a reasonable run-in and solid short-term schedule.

The Foxes face Stoke and Sunderland at home next and will have a double Gameweek to come, too. A tricky run of four consecutive away matches will take some of the shine off Leicester’s lustre, but Vardy’s three goals and two assists from his last three league starts points to a man back to his best.

Fantasy Premier League managers agree – the forward is currently the third most transferred-in player this week, behind only Man United’s Antonio Valencia and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Indeed, Vardy is the number one striker for transfers in over the last 24 hours as the bandwagon picks up pace.

Sold by over 22,000 FPL managers since the previous deadline, Defoe’s goal, following fine work by Raheem Sterling, would have come as a relief to his 23.6% ownership who have endured his four-match drought in the league.

Sunderland remain favourites for the drop, but have an attractive set of fixtures and double Gameweek to offer plenty of potential for more returns from the Black Cats’ striker.

Second-half substitute Marcus Rashford also caught the eye, enlivening a match in which the referee’s name – Ruddy Buquet – was one of the more interesting aspects.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic serving the final segment of his three-match ban at home to West Brom on Saturday, the 4.6%-owned Rashford looks likely to lead the line for Jose Mourinho’s men.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Keane, Stones, Bertrand, Dier, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sterling (Rashford 60), Lallana, Alli, Defoe (Vardy 60).
Subs not used: Clyne, Heaton, Shaw, Gibson, Livermore, Ward-Prowse, Barkley, Lingard, Redmond, Forster.

Northern Ireland 2 Norway 0

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis was the man of the match as Northern Ireland saw off a tame Norway.

Davis set up his country’s second goal while a defence containing West Brom trio Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Chris Brunt and Watford’s Craig Cathcart held firm at the other end.

The Norwegians only threatened occasionally, with FPL’s man of the moment Josh King – seven goals and an assist from his last six Bournemouth starts – starved of service.

West Ham midfielder Havard Nordtveit also featured for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Scotland left it very late to secure a 1-0 win over Slovenia that keeps them in the race for second place in the group England currently top.

West Brom’s James Morrison shook off an ankle injury to play 82 minutes and Andrew Robertson and Robert Snodgrass were the only other Premier League starters in Gordon Strachan’s side.

Four Premier League players started the match on the bench as Germany eased to a 4-1 win in Azerbaijan.

Shkodran Mustafi and Emre Can remained there, while Mesut Ozil, who has missed Arsenal’s last two league matches, came on after 61 minutes and Man City winger Leroy Sane was given a late run-out.

Swansea keeper Lukas Fabianski and Hull City wide man Kamil Grosicki were in action as Poland won 2-1 in Montenegro.

Grosicki was replaced deep into stoppage time.

Romania and Denmark played out a goalless draw in which Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen both played the full 90 minutes for the Danes.

All the South American sides are in World Cup qualifying action tomorrow night and there are also a number of European friendlies.

Early news includes Belgium pair Thibaut Courtois (hip) and Marouane Fellaini (toe) being ruled out of their country’s trip to Russia. They will return to their clubs to be assessed ahead of the weekend fixtures.

And there was an injury scare involving Spanish striker Diego Costa, who suffered an impact injury to his leg and ankle in training ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with France.

The forward, owned by 39.7% of FPL managers, underwent an X-ray but remains with the Spanish squad, with Chelsea informed on his condition.

It remains to be seen if Costa is considered fit enough to turn out against the French tomorrow night with the injury under observation by Spain’s medical team according to reports. The Blues, of course, already have concerns over Eden Hazard, who pulled out of Belgium duties with a calf complaint earlier in the break.

Can do Brunt - Bertrand this GW and bring in Sanchez next GW?

I don't think Mane to Sanchez is a good idea this week or next. I think you should get Sanchez next GW, but not for Mane. Siggy has a poor fixture in 31, and Costa has MCI, so maybe think about saving this week and doing Costa and Siggy for Sanchez and Gabbi move (if Gabbi not fit, then Deeney or Defoe).

I'm in the same boat, with very similar players.

Still in a bit of doubt so I'm waiting now - I might want to keep Mane for the Bournemouth fixture (Liverpool have to beat a bottom half team at some point!)

      But they all seem logical.

Key drawback on WCing for me is you lose your flexibility - what if there's a big injury? What about Kane coming back? I see you have no Spurs attack - what if they continue their red-hot form? And no Vardy/Mahrez for the next two - they are on fire!

I'd be tempted to just take the -4 this week and keep the wildcard in your pocket - that's what I'm doing - til we know all the information. It's a huge call and I don't think just being a bit unhappy is quite enough. 1 or 2 more injuries this IB and I'll join you, though!

Yeah, if Costa is ruled out I may be forced to WC. Agree though, I am only toying with the idea and also agree Kane is essential when fit although Costa and Lukaku in the above could become Kane and Vardy.

Hi all, bit of a mess with an expensive front 8 and 2 injuries.
    Heaton (Jakupovic)
Alonso McAuley Pieters ( Maguire Coleman*)
    Mane Alli Firmino Siggy (Antonio*)
    Aguero Lukaku Llorente

Would like walker for coleman, but cant afford (0.1itb).
    Thus thinking:
    A) Coleman to Valencia
    B) Antonio to 4.5, Coleman to Walker (-4)

I'm going to have to downgrade antonio for funds soon anyway so would you do B?

    1. Individual

Same injuries as me, see below!

I'd be thinking Coleman to Valencia, then Antonio to a Boro midfielder you can stick on your bench (e.g. MDR, Clayton) for the long term! I see you also have the dodgy defence I do, and the exact same forward line lol...

Ok guys - this good for a -4? Undecided on Toby vs. Valencia vs. Yoshi to enable Ibra yet, but thinking Toby at the moment to double down on Spurs.
All ML rivals own Walker and Alli so I'm not interested in covering, especially not for a -4.

    Jakdolph
    Alonso Brunt Coleman* Pieters RFM
    Siggy Mane Eriksen Antonio* Fletcher
    Kaku Kun Llorente
    3.0 itb, 1ft

    Coleman -> Toby/Valencia/Yoshi
    Antonio -> Mahrez (c)
    -4

Punting a lot on Mahrez, but I kind of fancy it in a week where there are very few standouts and I'm unable to get Costa / Vardy due to injuries elsewhere.
Next week Sanchez and Defoe for Kun and one of the midfielders.

Waiting until Friday to do it but I think that's looking good... any other ideas?

    Thanks!

Could do - I'm just freeing funds up for Sanchez, who will be absolutely in everyone's team. If I can get one or two early weeks with his points to myself / a few others I'd be very happy about that.

Kun I don't want for Chelsea, and I think I will eventually have Sterling/Sane in the midfield to cover the great City fixture list after a while. Just don't think I can afford 12.7m Kun there with so many alternatives in the run up to DGW demanding attention. Will see after Arsenal - if he smashes us, then obviously I'll reconsider.

I share the concerns expressed by others about Kun out before Hull. Plus, he make the move to Ibra for 34 really easy. But I also get that you need Sanchez. I think I would skip the Mahrez move myself. If you do Coleman to Yoshida and Antonio to Tadic or Pedro, you should have enough funds to do Siggy to Sanchez for free next week.

Hey man, thanks for the reply.

Interesting avenue... just feels less exciting than Valencia / Mahrez coming in I guess!

It's probably Tadic, Sanchez and Kun vs. Mahrez, Sanchez and Defoe. I can see why #1 would look better, but I don't feel like I can confidently ignore Leicester's form and fixtures currently.

Will have to see if the remaining internationals / pressers throw up anything more 🙂

So much for the scout notes, no mention of Brunt's assist. Is that because Mark doesn't own him? If McAuley had got that assist we wouldn't have heard the end of it.

I'm amazed at those getting Chelsea assets in for this week and captaining. Palace three wins and three clean sheets in a row.

I know they weren't against Chelsea but I'm not expecting a big win from them. 1 or 2 nil at best.

I think it's a little too soon to say that Palace have everything sorted. It's true they have pulled off some clean sheets, but they were home to Middlesboro and Watford, and away to an out-of-sorts West Brom. In the middle of that run they had a nice blank week, and just before the run they were scored on by Stoke and gave up 4 to Sunderland. I agree that a blow-out is unlikely, but I'll take a brace from Costa (assuming he is healthy).

    Kane ready to go.
    Problem is heart Vs head.
Vardy in form for the next 2 (at least), but Deeney suits better (can bench him on 32 when i have others good to play and will be leaving on WC35 or 36) and also PK.

Is Vardy much better then Deeney?

    1. Individual

Vardy for next two, then work it out once you get there - bear in mind that the next 3 gws are over the course of one calendar week (midweek game), so it'll happen very quickly. I'm prioritising short term atm, with WC in my pocket.

Brought vardy in for 3 week punt before WH game. Losing him after that for the 4 consecutive away games cos I think the CL fixtures will be high on the agenda if Leicester achieve 2 wins (which would almost secure their safety) against stoke (h) and Sunderland (h). I think there are better options for gw's 32, 33 and 34.

Just bad luck. Plan out how you'll get ready for 34/37 DGWs now so you have a vague idea of what you're aiming for, but it might work out well to just get it done - you'll certainly pick up a lot of points over the next couple of weeks after the WC, so look on the bright side and get a plan in place to contest those with their WC still to be used.
