Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 33

After a short break due to last week’s hectic Premier League schedule, we welcome the Scout Squad back and reveal the players in the frame for a place in this Friday’s Scout Picks.

This article aims to give a greater insight into the decision-making process behind our selections, as Mark, Paul and I list the 18 players we think have the best chance of success across the four positions, listed in rank order.

The discussions and disagreements that will take place behind the scenes are then showcased as each of us looks to back our players for a place in the Scout Picks, as well as our Spot the Differential articles.

Finally, we will also reveal the Community Champion who has been selected by our lottery to represent the community and be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher.

Goalkeepers

Value and clean sheet potential tend to be the key drivers for our goalkeeper selections and our latest lists are no exception, with four under-5.0 stoppers being put forward for consideration.

All of us see Wayne Hennessey (4.3) as an excellent option due to his integral role in a Crystal Palace defence that has kept three clean sheets in as many home matches and last saw their goal line breached at Selhurst Park back in Gameweek 24.

Visitors Leicester City have been in strong attacking form of late, scoring 15 in their last six, but with Champions League involvement on their minds, we think they will be sufficiently distracted. Mark is the 2.7%-owned stopper’s strongest backer, placing him at the top of his list.

Stoke City custodian Lee Grant (4.4) is another with strong support, with endorsement from Paul and myself ahead of Hull City’s visit to the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Despite conceding twice at home against Liverpool in Gameweek 32, the Potters have been resilient on familiar turf, where they have six shut-outs – a tally only bettered by Chelsea, Everton and Spurs.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are among the most travel sick sides in recent weeks, scoring just twice in their last six away matches and a mere eight times on the road this season.

Mark is less convinced Grant will start as Jack Butland completed 90 minutes for Stoke’s reserves midweek in his injury comeback. Instead, he has handed a vote to West Ham’s Darren Randolph (4.4), who drops by the Stadium of Light to visit the Premier League’s most out of form attacking unit.

David Moyes’ troops last scored in Gameweek 24, making the 1.8 %-owned Irishman a strong candidate despite his solitary vote and West Ham’s concession of 13 goals over their last six.

Joel Robles (4.7) earns top spot from Paul and nominations from Mark and myself due to Everton’s aforementioned strong defensive home form, which is unlikely to be troubled by a Burnley side that has scored just nine times away from Turf Moor.

Defenders

With three votes apiece, Spurs’ Ben Davies (4.9), Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso (6.8) and Stoke’s Erik Pieters (4.7) may have sewn up our Scout Picks’ backline.

Davies, who tops my onw and Paul’s lists, is part of the Premier League’s best home defence with 10 shut-outs – a record that will be put to the test when Bournemouth visit on the back of scoring nine goals in their last six.

But with four shots and six chances created for team-mates in his last five starts, the 3%-owned Welshman offers the added security of attacking potential to further justify his inclusion.

As already mentioned, Stoke have a solid prospect of a clean sheet when Hull visit, with the 8.6%-owned Pieters offering further routes to points, earning bonus points five times this season.

Goal threat is Alonso’s strength, having scored five times, including his sensational free kick against Bournemouth in his last run-out. He visits a Manchester United side that has struggled for goals at Old Trafford – over their last six home games, Jose Mourinho’s troops have failed to score on two occasions and only registered more than a single goal once, back in Gameweek 25 against Watford.

There’s the potential for disagreement should we back an Everton defender over Robles for their home tie with Burnley, with each of us picking a different player. I’m backing the in-form Phil Jagielka (4.7), who has two goals and an assist in his last pair of matches and looks to be taking over from the injured Seamus Coleman as the Toffees backline’s most potent threat. The FPL transfer market agrees with me, with 52,000+ bringing him in since Saturday.

Paul and Mark are rolling back the years with the selection of the 12.8%-owned Leighton Baines, who at 5.8 and with no attacking returns since his only goal this season in Gameweek 20, looks unlikely to make the cut. His 2010/11 heydey, when he scored five times and amassed 11 assists, looks a distant memory this season.

“Baines looks like one of the best options for points at both ends of the pitch this weekend. Everton had five home clean sheets in six prior to last week’s 4-2 win over Leicester and Ashley Williams’ return from suspension will bolster their prospects against Burnley at Goodison. The stats lend further weight to the left-back’s potential. Sean Dyche’s men have conceded 96 chances down their right flank away from home – more than any other side – which suggests that Baines (and Kevin Mirallas) could be in profit this weekend”. – Paul

Another put forward for consideration, by Mark and myself, is Arsenal’s right back Hector Bellerin (6.5), who travels to Teeside to take on a Middlesbrough attack that has scored just 12 times in front of their own fans, an unwelcome Premier League record this season. Mark has even gone as far as to rank the 13.9%-owned Spaniard top of his list.

Mamadou Sakho (4.8) gets a mention from Paul due to Palace’s strong recent defensive form and him earning maximum bonus returns in two of his last five run-outs.

Midfielders

As with last week’s Scout Picks, there is a strong possibility we will be loading up on Spurs’ attacking assets. Dele Alli (9.2) sweeps the board as our top midfielder and the 18.2%-owned Christian Eriksen (8.8) earns second spot from Mark and Paul.

A second successive favourable home tie is a key factor, with Bournemouth hoping they fare better than last weekend’s visitors Watford, who were crushed 4-0.

With eight goals and two assists at home for the FPL’s most popular midfielder Alli, and his Danish team-mate scoring five times and helping team-mates score a further seven, there is every chance both will make the cut.

I’ve refrained from this midfield double-up to ensure we don’t get blinded by Spurs and miss out on other strong midfield options, most notably Eden Hazard (10.4), who drops by Old Trafford in sensational form.

Over his last four run-outs, the 30.3%-owned Chelsea schemer has racked up three double-digit returns, two of which came on the road.

Four goals and two assists on his travels suggests that he is already on his way to having his strongest season yet away from Stamford Bridge – with his 2013/14 tally of four strikes and five assists his best so far.

Alexis Sanchez (11.6) may well be on a final warning as a Scout Picks selection due to his appalling recent form shackled to the left wing of an out-of-sorts Arsenal side. Over his last four appearances, the Chilean has mustered just one goal and visits a resolute Middlesbrough home defence with six shut-outs at the Riverside.

Given his price and tentative fourth-placing from me (and two third-place nods from Mark and Paul), his place in this week’s Scout Picks is far from certain.

If he fails to deliver again, many more FPL managers are set to join the 46,000 that have already jettisoned him this week.

“I just can’t fathom the idea that Sanchez can continue his decline. It seems improbable that, after seeing his side struggle with the Chilean parked out on the flank, Arsene Wenger will refuse to back down and change tact. The trip to Middlesbrough seems tailor made for Sanchez as the central attacker, with the pace of Theo Walcott and perhaps Alex Iwobi flanking either side. Four Gameweeks without a goal or an assist for Sanchez is just unthinkable and I refuse to entertain the idea.” – Mark

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (5.9) looks a far better bet to survive Friday’s shakedown, with three votes based on his value, form and fixture. The 11.3%-owned Ivory Coast international, who has been bought by 63,000+ FPL managers this week, hosts a Champions League-focused Leicester side having accrued three assists and two goals in his last five.

“Zaha seems to be finding his best form under Big Sam just in time for Palace’s double Gameweek – only Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min has fired more shots inside the box amongst FPL midfielders over the last four rounds of fixtures. With visitors Leicester having one eye on the Champions League, the Eagles will look to their in-form wide man to help claim another three points. Encouragingly for Allardyce, the Foxes sit in the bottom four defences for big chances conceded and shots against inside the box over the last four Gameweeks.” – Paul

Philippe Coutinho (8.4) is another in strong contention, with second billing from me and a fifth-placed nod from Paul. The 21.5%-owned Brazilian travels to West Brom as Liverpool’s most potent attacking threat, with three goals in as many matches. The Baggies last kept a clean sheet at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 24 to further boost his appeal.

Joining Sanchez in supping a drink at the last chance saloon is Swansea City set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6), who last delivered an attacking return in Gameweek 28 when he served up an assist against Hull.

Only Mark is keeping the faith in the Icelander when he drops by Vicarage Road. With just one defeat in their last six home matches, and no goals conceded in their last two in front of their own fans, Watford will not make it easy for the once reliable mid-priced asset.

Forwards

Harry Kane (11.3) and Romelu Lukaku (10.4) dominate our top two placings, making them shoo-ins for selection this Friday.

The form and fixture collision looks simply irresistible –  the Everton marksman, who has scored 12 in his last seven Goodison Park clashes, hosts a Burnley side that has shipped 30 goals on the road this season.

Mark marginally favours the 45.8%-owned Belgian, who is FPL’s most popular player, over the Spurs talisman, who earns top billing from Paul and me.

With six goals in his four starts prior to a three-match injury lay-off, Kane looks a sure bet for points when Bournemouth drop by – Eddie Howe’s charges have conceded 14 times and kept a solitary shut-out in their last six away trips.

Little wonder then the England striker has been acquired by more than 72,000 FPL managers since Saturday.

Just 84 million in our Scout Picks kitty means Sergio Aguero (12.8) may miss out despite gaining universal support and scoring five in his last six.

As well as his hefty price tag, a lack of double-digit hauls since Gameweek 13 and a trip to a Southampton outfit that has kept two clean sheets in their last four at home also count against the 23.5%-owned Argentine.

If we opt for a third striker, Jermain Defoe (7.7), Troy Deeney (6.9), Christian Benteke (7.1) and Andy Carroll (6.3) lead the charge for a place.

With two votes each, the Palace front man and the West Ham striker look the likely favourites.

However, I’ll be arguing that the Hornets’ skipper deserves a place after scoring four in as many home matches and hosting a Swansea side that has conceded 34 times on the road – the second-worst record in the league.

Mark is hoping Defoe can recapture the form that saw him score 14 goals between the start of the season and Gameweek 24. But with no returns since then, his prospects for inclusion do not look good, although with just one clean sheet on the road West Ham may be able to oblige the 20.3%-owned veteran.

Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 33 will be Jazz, who is doing well in his third season, with a rank of 6,163.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last Gameweek’s champion, Mikeharbrw, beat the Picks 70-54.

The current champion to beat is Boris Bodega, who achieved a 33-point margin of victory over us in Gameweek 15.

From GW34 onwards Spurs fixtures are

cpl ARS whm MUN lei hul

Only 2 home games left and they’re against Arsenal and Man U. Let’s now look at their rivals...

Conversely Man U and Arsenal have 1 more game and much more favourable fixtures

    Arsenal
LEI tot MUN sot sto SUN EVE

    Man U
bur mci SWA ars tot sot CPL

Chelsea and Man City have the same number of games remaining as Spurs but they too Aye have much nicer fixtures

    Chelsea
SOT eve MID wba WAT SUN

    Man City
MUN mid CPL LEI WBA wat

Its going to be a case of 'you can’t have them all' but I think I’d rather spend my money on Hazard, Sanchez, Ibrahimovic and Sane/Sterling than having Alli or Kane.

fair enough but what makes you think Arsenal Man U Chelsea City all will be consistent through out from now on. The one thing we have learned this season is that spurs assets are most trust worthy this season and they have duly delivered when the others have faltered .Sanchez is faltering atm Costa not good enough Haz could be good Man u are pretty Meh plus Europa .city are not trustable plus you can get Sane /Sterling regardless of if you have spurs assets or not .

Spurs are in such good form. Arsenal home is a half decent fixture for attacking returns. Palace will be tough to call but reckon they'll win on current form. Then Hull last game of the season which is going to depend on how the league looks anyways much like all of those top teams.

Currently own Son, Davies and Alli. The first two were short term and will be gone on the wildcard.

Think fixture proof applies to Spurs. Beat Chelsea 2 nil at home. Arsenal are a mess, Spurs will be much more fired up for the derby. They're in form and chasing the leaders. I want 4 Spurs from now till the end of the season

Form over Fixtures isn't it? Arsenal are really in the dumps and united can't score for fun.

City and Chelsea have good fixtures but can see Chelsea tightening up as they crawl towards title. City are a bit under the radar for sure but pep's crazy rotations have put me off them.

There is a case not to go triple Spurs in attack for sure. I
am still keeping alli and Kane, think they offer more upside than any combination from United or Arsenal.

I'm on WC this week and tempted to ignore Kane and Alli and just get Son for the price. It's the only way to fit Hazard, Sanchez (no form) and Aguero in

Plus I'm still stuck down at almost 500,000 so might as well have a load of differentials for the run in.

Palace, Westham and Hull are difficult fixtures? Palace's form will come to an end very soon when the secure survival. Westham and Hull are plum fixtures. The NLD is always prime for goals. And Spurs have a DGW. Also anything other than a victory for Chelsea this week and the league is wide open again with Chelsea having to go to Goodison in GW 35.

Having Sanchez, Ibra, Sane/Sterling is not a problem honestly even if you have Eriksen, Alli & Kane.

Great post. On Triple here (Vert/Eriksen/Alli) but one or two of them will have to go eventually to facilitate certainly more City players in my team I think. Atm they have form, so I'm not worried, but being so heavily weighted toward one team is under constant review.

Yeah I didn't 100% desert - I kept Mahrez and Toby from what I remember - back then and yeah I don't have a WC this time round so I can't really do it again this time round either

My big learning has been to actually avoid Man United (remembering what a let down Liverpool were last year in the league when concentrating on UEL) and not get too carried away with their DGW - I actually REMOVED Valencia this week because the uncertainty was starting to grate, and I'm not going to get 9pts from Yoshi off the bench every week 😀

Sensible to ditch Val, no way was he going to play every prem game when they are chasing the Europa, iv ditched Sanchez this week for haz, gutted I chose him when mane got inj, iv got walker, Alli and Erik and I'm bricking it at not having Kane but i didn't fancy the ibra Kane hokey kokey

my midfield is Haz Sanchez Eriksen Alli Zaha, so I'm not bricking it at no Kane. I've Vert at the back too so I'd have to do a -4 to get Kane in for Kun (other striker is Kaku) and I don't see anyone else I want at 5.6ish, plus -4 seems mad for a striker who hasn't scored v. one who is scoring. I will remove Kun for Ibra next weekend anyway (reluctantly!)

        Alli - 45 pts
        kane - 42 pts
        Ibra - 26 pts
        Sanchez - 20 pts

Regardless of the extra games you just cant ignore Alli and Kane

Hazard - once Chelsea win the league will motivation drop? Rotation?

Sanchez - looks a shadow of his former self unless moved back up top

Ibra - Fatigue. Limited goals. Tougher fixtures

Sane/Sterling - cheap and can be fit in alongside Spurs assets.

Even if Spurs lose the title pursuit, they're gonna want that 2nd spot. Can't see much rotation (if any), and they have Kane pursuing the Golden Boot.

Understand the reasoning, but cannot see a case for dropping Spurs.

I'm wildcarding in 35 and was just trying something out yesterday. It's very hard picking 8 players up front with a lot of good teams having a DGW. So might just get Kane and that's it

        The HT is titled wrongly
In is missing before the word dispensable
Didn't we all go through this last season?
Spurs had a SGW, we sold Spurs assets to load up on DGW players & Spurs won 4-0
I believe at least 2 Spurs is needed, a midfielder & Kane would be the best combo
They can score 2-3 against most of those sides
3 of those are against London outfits & Kane loves scoring against London teams

RP. Best GW 34 move to get Ibra (still have WC):

      A) Alonso > Barragan -4
      B) Alonso, Siggy > Valencia, Zaha -8
      C) Evans, Siggy > 4.0 (5th def), Zaha -8

If it's for free then it might be worth doing BUT then again that's only if the rest of your team is perfect. Ibra could do well against Chelsea anyways. No clean sheet in ages.

      Pickford (Heaton)
      Walker Holgate Pieters (Valencia Alonso)
      Alli Sanchez Sterling Siggy (Leko)
      Lukaku Vardy Carroll

      2 FT's and 0.0 in the bank

      A) Vardy + Sterling > Kane + Zaha
Then Kane/Lukaku + Siggy to Ibra + King (-4) next game week?

      B) Vardy + Sanchez > Kane + Zaha
Then Carroll > Ibra next week.

Thought I’d look at the run in for the rest of the season and see who the players are that who should look at accommodating for the double gameweeks and final run in. For the sake of it I’m going to presume that Bench Boost, Triple Captain and Wildcard are all still intact (not fussed about AOA).

The template team going into GW33 seems to look like:

      Jakupovic | Heaton
      Davies| Valencia | Holgate | Alonso | Yoshida
      Alli | Sanchez | Zaha | King | Hazard
      Kane | Lukaku |Benteke

Players like Pickford, Baines, Gibson, Coutinho, Sigurdsson, Aguero and Ibrahimovic are also in the mix depending on TV, with some of these to be considered bringing in for the doubles in GW34 (MUN, MID, CPL).

For the most part though, this team can stay pretty similar until GW35, which is when most seem like utilising their Wildcard. Obviously, if you are without your Wildcard, you will be looking at bringing in players who have double gameweeks, earlier on in the piece.

The GW35 Wildcard template team will (or at least mine will) look something along the lines of:

      Cech | Pickford
      Mustafi | Yoshida | Stones | Yoshida | Kone
      Sanchez | Alli | Ward-Prowse | Hazard | Fletcher
      Gabbiadini | Kane | Aguero

This team will most likely be unattainable by then due to price changes, so there will have to be some downgrades come the time. But, give or take a couple of players, we can assume it will be quite similar. The main candidates (with some possible differential players) to look at for the GW35 & 36 doubles seem to be:

ARS: Cech, Mustafi, Sanchez, Walcott (Ozil)
SOT: Forster, Yoshida/Stephens, Tadic, Gabbiadini (JWP)
      MUN: Ibrahimovic (Bailly)
      CHE: Azpilicueta, Hazard, Costa (Moses)
      MCI: Stones, Sane/Sterling, Aguero (Jesus)
      SUN: Pickford, Kone, Defoe
TOT: Davies, Alli, Eriksen, Son, Kane (Dier)

Finally, we have the chips to ponder over. The go to option on the streets seems to be using the Triple Captain on Sanchez in GW36 and then Bench Boosting 15 double gameweek players in GW37. This way you are Bench Boosting potentially 15 double gameweek players. The main downside of this plan is Sanchez's fixtures and possible continuous lack of form. Something to monitor though and we depend on personal preferences that's for sure.

Obviously none of this will come to fruition and the likes of Januzaj, Deeney and Rashford will all record 20+ point hauls.

It's interesting and I can see that being the template for sure. I'll be wanting Holgate though as he'll for sure be the best 4.(1/2) defender for that week. I'll also be keeping Lukaku for the season (Watford HOME that week).

Player of year 2017 nominees: Eden Hazard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Harry Kane, N'Golo Kante, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez

Young Player of the Year 2017 nominees: R. Lukaku, H. Kane, D. Alli, L. Sané, J. Pickford, M. Keane

Kante wins the premier league with Leicester while Chelsea had a terrible season. Moves to Chelsea and then wins the title quite easily there while Leicester struggle big time. Says it all really!

I know there are other factors, Mourinho having a mare at Chelsea, Leicester were never going to do as well this season etc but the man is an animal.

Yeah but see i don't like that logic, Alli isn't good enough to be nominated for player of the season but Kane and Lukaku are so why would Alli win Young player of the year ahead of 2 players who are considered to have had a better season as they were nominated for Player of the season!

Even on the Young player of the year award. I reckon they could lower the age on it a bit. Kane and Lukaku have been 23 since the season kicked off, I'm not sure if 23 should be considered young anymore. Players are reaching their peaks earlier in their careers these days.

Alli, Sane, Sterling, JWP, Tom Davies, Pickford

That would make a good Young player of the year list, all are or were 21 or younger when the season started except Pickford who was 22, but maybe we should cut the keepers some slack, they generally start off later in their careers.

Basically is Ward, Bailly, Valencia worth getting for Brunt this week for a (-4) and if so which one??

And would getting Holgate for Brunt this week be little too cheeky to expect it to work going forward with the above.

I'm thinking of buying Kane and selling Sanchez and Origi for a hit. Who's the best 8.5 midfielder to get in? (WC in 35 or 36, so don't consider DGW36-37)

      A) Coutinho
      B) Townsend (already own Zaha)
      C) Other
      D) Save
      E) Do Origi>Benteke for free and keep Sanchez.
      F) Sanchez>Son and keep Origi. Origi>Ibra next week and no Kane.

Already own Alli and Davies, so can't get both Kane and Son.

          WC in 36 most likely.

I have considered it, but Aguero is in form and to be honest I would like to keep him for another week. Unlucky not to get bigger hauls over the past few weeks.

                Hold FT.

Not worth siggy to cout this week anyway.

                Like aguero also

Aguero hasn't double digit hauled since GW13 - need better than that for the money.

Not sure I would be taking a hit with such a good team, maybe wait and use FTs to get a Kane next week, but I think Kane will outscore Aguero this week

      Heaton Pickford
      Alonso Davies Mawson Robertson Amat
      Sanchez Alli Siggy King Capoue
      Ibra Lukaku Origi

Still have a WC to play for the DGW so in order to get Kane how does Sanchez > Zaha and Origi > Kane look?

Then get Sanchez back in on the WC for his 2 DGW's.

I feel like it does majorly weaken your midfield but then that is probably the only option. Unless you just do Ibra -> Kane and then get Ibra back.

I'm 0.1 short of Vardy to Kane so need to take a -4. Best option for the next couple of weeks with my WC still in hand?

      A) Siggy/Sane > Zaha?; or
      B) do I forget Zaha this week and downgrade one of Valencia or Brunt?

Currently I am looking like this...

      Grant
      Valencia Baines Cedric
      Eriksen Sane Siggy Alexis King
      Vardy Lukaku

      Pickford Carroll Brunt Friend

      Sky Sports FF

      Average remaining transfers:

      Top 10 3.4
      Top 100 3.44
      Top 1000 3.513
      Top 5000 3.4482

With this info and the fixture updates, how are you plans coming along?

      1. pmj1981

Have to admit I'm struggling. Only 3 transfers left and the decision on my forward 3 and captaincies in respect of the new fixture updates are causing all sorts of headaches in how to use those transfers wisely.

Sanchez is a particular source of frustration at the moment as he's the most out of form (and thus droppable) of the big hitters, yet Arsenal probably have the most single gameday fixtures remaining. Do we dare go without him for those??

With only 3 TFs, maybe an idea to ensure you have a captain pick for each day?

            • 8 Years
            7 years, 22 days ago

Been looking at that and to preserve transfers, it probably means going without Kane which I fear is a bad idea. Also have no Liverpool or United cover so the problems are continuing to mount.

Antonio has been ruled out for the season so at least Snodgrass might get games and wont require a precious transfer.

Yeah, the timing is the biggest issue for me right now. With so many games and so many options, choosing how to use these last few precious transfers is proving a right headache.

Out of the 9 attacking players I have ear-marked for the rest of the season, with a bit of careful planning, I think I can select them in over 80% of their 60-odd fixtures 🙂

I'm up to 511 with 5 transfers. Having played the striker hokey cokey these past few weeks though I find myself with no Kane or Lukaku this week. I just can't justify bringing either back for Sanchez or Ibra so it's behind the sofa time on Saturday and Eriksen(c) hoping for the best.. 🙂

My plans are in motion but not nailed down yet. What I want and lack are Utd, City and Che coverage but picking the right player to go for them at (crucially) the right time is proving the hardest to decide on.

It's these times of the season that really make this game for me. I love the planning with limited transfers and countless captaincies needing to be covered.

No doubt I'll waste a bunch of transfers over the last few weeks like I did last year but I'll have a lot of fun along the way!

Used my WC a few weeks ago and still quite content with the decision. Happy to go to GW37 with a couple of single gw players like King, Holgate, Lukaku, even Zaha. Not huge rotation risks and they all got good fixtures and could outscore dgw players.

Question for this weekend, who to play: Pedro, JWP or Valencia? Only one of them can make the team. A bit frustrated with Pedro so thinking maybe JWP.

I was all set on Aguero > Kane and keeping Sanchez but now I'm thinking maybe ditching is the better option?

I have no WC left and 1FT, I have Dele and Eriksen so will need to get rid of Davies to enable Kane.

I've had Kane all season every time he's returned from injury and he's done well for me, so feel he's essential.

Who would you drop Sanchez or Aguero? Both would be for a -4
