Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

A late goal for the hosts ensures a wasteful Manchester United must go to Old Trafford with their Europa League quarter-final tie still in the balance. While post-match, Jose Mourinho has a further revelation on Antonio Valencia. Here’s the notes from Thursday’s events.

Anderlecht 1 Manchester United 1

Different country, same old result – Man United again failed to kill off a match and had to settle for a draw in a Europa League quarter-final they dominated for long spells.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s smart finish from a tight angle, after Marcus Rashford’s shot was parried, had given the visitors a lead that their first-half superiority utterly merited.

But United are a side that has drawn 12 of their league matches this season and they took that inability to convert chances with them to Belgium.

Jesse Lingard hit a post and, crucially, Paul Pogba was denied when put through by Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the break.

That would have probably killed off the tie. Instead, minutes later, the Belgians equalised from their one and only attempt on target – United had seven.

The result was precisely not what Fantasy managers were looking for, creating doubt as to team selection in the run-up to a double Gameweek 34 involving trips to Burnley and Man City.

United could, and should, have run out easy winners in Belgium, allowing Jose Mourinho to concentrate his increasingly sparse squad resources, if only in the short-term, on attempting to secure a fourth-placed league finish that would guarantee Champions League football next season.

Now, he will surely be forced to field a strong side in next Thursday’s second leg right before embarking on that double Gameweek.

Mourinho’s post-match comments regarding the 16.1%-owned Antonio Valencia won’t have eased the concerns of Fantasy managers either.

“Antonio Valencia is having some problems and he cannot play every game.”

The Ecuadorian right-back has already missed the last two domestic matches. Those who were banking on strong returns from him in Gameweek 34 are suddenly very uncertain, while his start against Chelsea also appears far from secure.

Injuries to key players in both defence and midfield mean Mourinho can only shuffle his pack so much, but the Red Devils now face four key fixtures in 13 days, starting with a huge match on Sunday against Chelsea.

Expecting the 30%-owned Ibrahimovic and Pogba (7.6%) – or even differential prospects Mkhitaryan (2.4%) or Rashford (4.7%) – to feature in all four perhaps seems unlikely.

The best-case scenario probably involves United losing to Chelsea, forcing Mourinho to commit fully to winning the Europa League and taking at least some of the doubt over selection out of the equation.

But based on how United’s season has been going, they’ll probably draw it, and those doubts will linger.

Team: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Darmian, Carrick, Pogba, Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 90), Lingard (Martial 63), Rashford (Fellaini 75), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Blind, Ander Herrera, Shaw.

Yes. Also to those people who say Wenger is lying when he says it Sanchez's choice to be on wing are wrong. Sanchez is hardly someone who strikes me as a follower and will demand his own plans.
Also this goes a long way to explaining why Sanchez isn't up front...its actually out of Wenger's hands.

Josh King last four fixtures. Might not have a DGW, but you could only ask for marginally better fixtures (e.g. Hull at home rather than Stoke at home).

    Wenger in December:

Alexis Sanchez is happier playing as a striker for Arsenal, according to his manager Arsene Wenger

    Wenger in April:

Wenger says Sanchez "prefers to play wide than up front" because he can touch the ball more often.

    That's not good...

    Is this Darren reliable?

    So the info was right.

As mentioned a couple of Weeks ago I said Wenger contract had been withdrawn.

From what I was told this was done by the board

Info also says that Stan Wants wenger to stay but the board and other high level staff want changes in manager and non playing staff.

If Wenger does leave there will be changes in staff and players

Club had a large kitty available but will rely on sales to generate most it's transfer revenue

I am getting Tom Davies. He is cheap and will hopefully provide Lukaku this week and also frees up cash for Ibra next week or possibly Kane this week.

      A) Sig > Tom Davies (gives cash for Llorente > Ibra next gw)
      B) Son + Llorente > Tom Davies + Kane (-4 points)

I've Sanchez, Sigurdsson and Carroll - all players who quite rightly are being dumped by many. This is their final week to impress for me, so hope they can be unlikely differentials*

Differentials in the context of unexpected hauls rather than ownership.

Benteke against a Leicester team that has other things on their mind and probably an under strength starting line up.

I'm sure this link has been posted already, but as there is a lot of talk about it I thought I would flag it up:

It has been suggested that Wenger has said Sanchez...:

"prefers to play wide than up front, because he can touch the ball more often."

Personally, I'm not sure what would be stranger - Wenger has seemingly bowing to Sanchez's opinion on the matter, or that Sanchez himself actually prefers to play there. It sounds like a way of deflecting some of the attention away from his poor management lately.

Having only Sanchez pulling the finger out on a regular basis hasn't helped Wenger.

Load of tripe. He's lost it. Although, I'd he does play Giroud up front, that's not the worst for Sanchez owners. Still able to cause damage and worked OK last year.

Wenger is a parody these days. Tarnishing a bit of his legacy every week.

I've sold Alexis to afford to afford Kane and won't look back at least until GW36.

Sanchez likes playing wide in the same way as Ronaldo, Bale, Neymar and Suarez play wide. Not hugging the touchline and passing to Monreal.

It would be very easy for this to found out as a lie, simply ask Sanchez himself!

Given that Arsenal have just offered Sanchez an improved offer, I don't think Arsene would lie about stuff like this.

As daft as it sounds its seems it really might be Sanchez who wants to be on the wing after all.

If he's more effective up front though, and the team have been getting results (which they were) - why is Wenger giving in to what Sanchez wants? It's hardly the sign of a manager in control of the situation and more indicative that he's losing the bottle to manage the club.

I agree arsenal look better with sanchez up top, but don't think their poor results are down to him being wide.

If they had a decent forward I suspect he would always be wide.

    Heaton Foster
    Mawson Valencia Robertson Davies Bernardo
Fletcher, De Roon, Alli, Sanchez, Sig
    Carroll, Lukaku, Aguero.

Worth playing wc now or holding off? Plan to bring in Ibra for Aguero in GW34.
