Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

A late goal for the hosts ensures a wasteful Manchester United must go to Old Trafford with their Europa League quarter-final tie still in the balance. While post-match, Jose Mourinho has a further revelation on Antonio Valencia. Here’s the notes from Thursday’s events.

Anderlecht 1 Manchester United 1

Different country, same old result – Man United again failed to kill off a match and had to settle for a draw in a Europa League quarter-final they dominated for long spells.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s smart finish from a tight angle, after Marcus Rashford’s shot was parried, had given the visitors a lead that their first-half superiority utterly merited.

But United are a side that has drawn 12 of their league matches this season and they took that inability to convert chances with them to Belgium.

Jesse Lingard hit a post and, crucially, Paul Pogba was denied when put through by Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the break.

That would have probably killed off the tie. Instead, minutes later, the Belgians equalised from their one and only attempt on target – United had seven.

The result was precisely not what Fantasy managers were looking for, creating doubt as to team selection in the run-up to a double Gameweek 34 involving trips to Burnley and Man City.

United could, and should, have run out easy winners in Belgium, allowing Jose Mourinho to concentrate his increasingly sparse squad resources, if only in the short-term, on attempting to secure a fourth-placed league finish that would guarantee Champions League football next season.

Now, he will surely be forced to field a strong side in next Thursday’s second leg right before embarking on that double Gameweek.

Mourinho’s post-match comments regarding the 16.1%-owned Antonio Valencia won’t have eased the concerns of Fantasy managers either.

“Antonio Valencia is having some problems and he cannot play every game.”

The Ecuadorian right-back has already missed the last two domestic matches. Those who were banking on strong returns from him in Gameweek 34 are suddenly very uncertain, while his start against Chelsea also appears far from secure.

Injuries to key players in both defence and midfield mean Mourinho can only shuffle his pack so much, but the Red Devils now face four key fixtures in 13 days, starting with a huge match on Sunday against Chelsea.

Expecting the 30%-owned Ibrahimovic and Pogba (7.6%) – or even differential prospects Mkhitaryan (2.4%) or Rashford (4.7%) – to feature in all four perhaps seems unlikely.

The best-case scenario probably involves United losing to Chelsea, forcing Mourinho to commit fully to winning the Europa League and taking at least some of the doubt over selection out of the equation.

But based on how United’s season has been going, they’ll probably draw it, and those doubts will linger.

Team: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Darmian, Carrick, Pogba, Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 90), Lingard (Martial 63), Rashford (Fellaini 75), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Blind, Ander Herrera, Shaw.

    For those planning on using BB in GW37, WC or not, are you looking to have 15 DGW players regardless of fixture or a mixture of single and double players based on form and fixtures?

    For example Holgate who does not have any doubles, but has a great fixture GW 37 and at 4.0 is a great enabler.

    Cheers

        it's unlikely anybody will have 15 players starting twice due to end of season rotation.

          Single GW players are also likely to be rested. I'll wildcard in 36 with 15 DGW probably and take my chances. Obviously I won't get every player making 2 appearances

            true, but more chance of rotation if they are playing three times in just over a week.

      Yeah, don't fall into the trap of getting rid of single GW players with good fixtures and just getting one with a DGW just for the sake of 2 games. 2 games doesn't necessarily mean more points. Some players with one fixture will outscore DGW players

    He played for a while [as a] centre-forward and has the focus needed to score. He plays with an aggressive attitude.

    “Fortunately, he’s a player who likes to touch the ball a lot.

    “He prefers to play wide than up front. He can get more of the ball. He has to keep the balance between providing and goalscoring.”

    How are people reading this ( regardless of if you own or not)

    Either that he stays on wing
    Or the fact he mentions he has to keep a balance meaning sometimes he may need to be the goalscorer ( ie up front)

      He is on the wing, but needs to get in the box more to put the ball in the net. Perhaps wishful thinking. There are different ways of playing wide IMO. Neymar and Bale play 'wide', but they don't really. Navas and Sterling play 'wide' but in a very different way. If Sanchez is on the wing I want to see him play the Neymar / Bale way.

    Would really appreciate some thoughts on this WC team. I did want to save but my team was dire and falling away in my ML.

    Pickford. Valdes.
    Valencia. Davies. Gibson. Holgate. Stephens.
    Hazard. Alli. Zaha. King. T Carroll.
    Aguero. Lukaku. Kane

    0.2m ITB.

    Only area I'm not that happy with is Valencia but not sure who else to get around that price. I could afford De Roon instead of T Carroll but not sure I'd be that desperate to play him GW34 for the sake of a DGW given my midfielders other fixtures.

    Hi I need some advice regarding my team(0,4 ITB 0 FT).

    Pickford(Valdes)
    Alonso, Holgate, Fuchs(Chambers, Stephens)
    Alli, Eriksen, Sanchez, Sigurdsson(Conquelin)
    Kane(V),Benteke,Lukaku(C)

    A) in GW 33 play who should I play, Fuchs or Stephens?

    B) Kane vs Lukaku for C,
    Lukaku is in form, Kane just came back and his form is unknown. Im leaning towards Lukaku, beacuse everyone has him in my ML and im leading it, so he would be the safest one to captain. Yay/No?

    C) My transferplan in the future is:

    GW 34: Sigurdsson -> Zaha
    GW 35: Benteke -> Gabbiadini
    GW 36: Erikssen/Alli -> Hazard

    And changing some defenders/the bench, then I should be ok for the rest of the season. Please drop some comments, would really appreciate it 🙂

    You have to think Big Sam will start PVA this GW, trained all week and you have to play your best players. You could make the point of why change a winning team but whenever fit, you'd assume he'd start. There's always that slight risk in bringing him but if you really want him, go for it.

      I think he will be benched. Why change a team that won 3-0 at home against Arsenal. They are firing.

      But after a long lay off and with Schlupp a more than capable player will Big Sam risk him in both the DGW fixtures when he has a good player to rotate him with?

      Could depend on Townsend's fitness. If he's out then PVA or Schlupp could play on the wing.

      In all seriousness though, it looks good, though I'm unsure on Lanzini even with the fixture
