The Watchlist – Valdes Blow Promotes Gibson

The impending double Gameweek has a major influence on our latest Watchlist refresh, with assets from three teams – Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough – gaining temporary boosts in the reckoning.

However, Monday night’s clash with Arsenal delivered some concerning news for those considering Boro defensive coverage, with goalkeeper Victor Valdes missing out with a rib injury.

Interim boss Steve Agnew declared he had “literally no idea” on a likely return for the keeper, who was due to be assessed following the training ground setback. While we wait on the prognosis, the uncertainty in the Boro goal diminishes both Valdes and replacement Brad Guzan as options.

With Fabio forced off with a knee injury against Arsenal, and match fitness perhaps an issue for returning duo Calum Chambers and George Friend, ever-present Ben Gibson strengthens his spot at the top our defender rankings.

That also means that Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who has amassed 37 points and four clean sheets from their last seven fixtures, cements his spot at the summit of our keeper rankings.

He’ll face two strong attacking sides in Gameweek 34 – Liverpool and Spurs – but the recent shut-out against Arsenal will give managers hope that Sam Allardyce’s revived defensive unit can claim another scalp. If not, Hennessey’s propensity to earn save points – demonstrated by his 10 stops in the recent victory at Stamford Bridge – provides a handy fallback.

Also rising in our keeper ranks is Southampton’s Fraser Forster. The 5.0 target has a difficult single Gameweek 34 fixture away to Chelsea, although that’s followed by a match-up with Hull City at St Mary’s, which then precedes consecutive doubles in 36 and 37.

Monday night’s Riverside Stadium clash was also notable for the return of Petr Cech, who had missed three outings with a calf injury. Arsenal have only kept two clean sheets in ten – even conceding to Middlesbrough – but they face Leicester City next Wednesday and join Southampton in offering double Gameweeks 36 and 37. Cech, therefore, earns a tentative boost in our rankings, although Forster remains our preferred route into the Gameweek 36 double.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s David de Gea missed his first match of the season at Sunderland, but returned in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea to maintain a high Watchlist ranking.

Jose Mourinho’s defence have kept an outstanding six clean sheets in nine and while the trips to Burnley and rivals City will test their resilience, De Gea could well be in line to deliver rare save points – particularly in the latter fixture.

Further down the ladder, there’s little movement for Burnley’s Tom Heaton or Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic, who provide assured options with a strong set of upcoming fixtures – albeit without the boost of a double Gameweek.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford remains on a simmer.

A popular back-up to Heaton in our squads, the Black Cat can offer a double Gameweek 37, although with relegation looming prior to those fixtures, motivation could become a factor. Desperate for goals and victories, Pickford’s lack of clean sheets is set to remain an issue, with save points his main source of income. The youngster has produced 36 saves in his last seven outings – more than any other FPL keeper.

In defence, the aforementioned Gibson is chased by Maya Yoshida and will doubtless give way to the Southampton option once Gameweek 34 has been cleared. Boosted by his two double Gameweeks, Yoshida has produced two clean sheets, a goal and seven bonus points in his past four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Patrick van Aanholt provides a differential addition to our defensive options.

The Dutchman has scored four goals this season and makes a timely return for Palace’s twin fixtures. Introduced from the bench against Leicester City on Saturday, we’re backing him to oust Jeffrey Schlupp and retain a starting birth for the run-in. Joel Ward, as a most unglamorous 4.8 option, is replaced in our rankings, then, although he remains an alternative for those unwilling to risk the returning Van Aanholt.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia is also replaced, as team-mate Eric Bailly is swapped in, with the Ecuadorian’s starts over Gameweek 34 and the Old Trafford meeting with Swansea City far from assured. Bailly, as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice centre-back alongside Marcos Rojo, is now our preferred option, at least until Chris Smalling or Phil Jones return to give the United boss rotation options.

Just as Jakupovic retains his rank among our goalkeeper standings, so Harry Maguire finds a place in our defenders listing.

Back-to-back goals have finally translated his consistent threat into points and, with favourable fixtures to come, starting with the Gameweek 34 home tie with Watford, the centre-back/right-back remains in our thinking. We surely hold and play Maguire at present.

Elsewhere, Laurent Koscielny supersedes Hector Bellerin as our Arsenal option following the Spaniard’s relegation to the bench on Monday night as part of Arsene Wenger’s shift to a 3-4-2-1.

Similarly, Jan Vertonghen is swapped in as our Spurs candidate. With Danny Rose believed to be approaching a return to contention, Ben Davies’ stock takes a blow, while Kyle Walker’s vulnerability to the Kieran Trippier option has him ignored. Vertonghen, at 5.7, is the cheapest route available. However, given the clamour for three attacking options in the Spurs ranks, he holds limited appeal.

Above the Spurs man, Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels enjoys a renaissance. While Eddie Howe’s defence are far from reliable and are without a double Gameweek, they boast an outstanding schedule and Daniels’ attacking flair will perhaps be given greater freedom once safety is assured.

The Cherries left-back has three goals and as many assists this season and could prove a worthwhile differential purchase for those booking their wildcard for a forthcoming Gameweek.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

Have my own ideas about my own team (funny that?) but would like some opinion on what you guys would do with this lot?

    De Gea (bur, mci)
Davies (cry), Alonso (SOU), Robertson (WAT)
Son (cry), Alli (cry), Sanchez (LEI), Zaha (liv, TOT), Grosicki (WAT)
    Origi (CRY), Lukaku (whu)

Bench: Jaku (WAT), Vardy (ars), Yoshida (che), McAuley.............. 1 FT........... 2.3m ITB.

Currently benching Vardy but likely to get rid of him, leaves me with benching problems though. Also **I will not be getting rid of Lukaku. Simple, dullard move is McAuley to a DGW defender and benching Davies/Robertson.

    A repost...

I've got this now, no hits yet.

    Valdes(dgw)
    Valencia(dgw), Alonso, Azpi, Baines, Brunt
    Zaha(dgw), Alexis, Wally, Lanzini, Schneiderlin
    Zlatan(dgw), Negredo(dgw), Tekkers(dgw)

    So 6 dgw'ers.
Thinking on getting in 1 or 2 more with hits for fun.
Brunt to someone - then bench one of the Che defs(Azpi likely).
Schneiderlin to someone- then bench one of lanzini/Wally

    Suggestion???
And don't worry about me having to many crap players as I will be taking hits every week to get me as close to 15 dgw'ers as I can.

Doing my head in about this DGW. Not sure if I want to go too further with no WC available later. Team is:

    Hennesey
    Alonso | Valencia | Maguire
    Alexis | Alli | Eriksen | Zaha | King
    Kane | Lukaku

    Jaku | Yoshida* | fodder x2
    0FT | 0.8ITB

Yoshida > Gibson for a hit worth it? Even if I have to get him back a few weeks later for the DGW36 fixtures.

So do I get him and play, who do I bench if so? Or is the headache simply not worth it...

Afternoon. RMT and take hit/save advice post :).

    HENN / Pick
Vert BARRAGONEAFTER34 Holgate / Yoshi Stones
    Eriksen Alli Sanchez ZAHAHA(C) Hazard
    TEKKERS Kaku / Anichebe

Did Kun -> Tekkers whilst inebriated on Saturday evening. Gut says Zaha armband so I'm gna risk it, chasing in MLs, but will probably be incorrect :D.

Best approach here after 2n's game:
    A) Vertonghen -> Bailly/Rojo -4 (allows for Kaku -> Kane in 35)
    B) Eriksen -> Mkhi -4 (puntius maximus, but another route to Kane)
    C) G2G, and do A + Kane next week.

    Thanks

My only concern with that is just how ownership for him is in my ML, almost everyone around me will have him and captain him, so taking the risk could destroy me. Plus, I'm more likely to hold onto Ibra past this week...I plan on watching how his minutes are managed today though. For insight.

I reckon if you ran the data through a statistical model it would tell you there were no correlations in any of the points per minute when others are on the pitch... Probably quite similar. Though, I haven't done that work....

All random for points so having 2 of them is essential and hope that the other two aren't combining for the goals.

    Hi guys/girls - bit of a dilemma:

Currently on a WildCard (playing this week for mini league catch-up reasons). I currently have Alli ( and have had for a while) but I'm about to pull the trigger on changing him for Son (already have Kane).
I realise Son is a game time risk, but his goal stats are excellent (even when off the bench) and the difference between those 2 is the difference between 4 and 7 DGW players (and more flexibility prior to GW37)

Is Alli > Son madness given the above?

Anyone else forgetting about their free transfer in GW35?? I have been... Negredo for this week is good but next week not so much. Simple next week transfer him out for Defoe (BOU) OR Gabbiadini (HUL), then Defoe out again in GW36 (probably for Gabbi, or keep Gabbi)

OR I can simply bench Negredo and upgrade 5th mid Grosicki to someone like Shaq/Arnie for (WHM).

I really do think this transfer isn't being considered enough in the Benteke Vs Negredo argument. For me I don't have other things to tackle in 35 (Need to play Alonso (eve), but that's not terrible). Then I'm wildcarding in 36 anyways.

    Thoughts?

Ibra could be a waste of space if Man U win tonite- right?

        I bought him early.

Burnley play deep... United will need him for that game. Can't see Mourinho benching him against Pep either given their history. I reckon he starts both.

As for Negredo... now that's a bloody bizarre bandwagon! Waste of space all season, much prefer the tried and tested Bentekkers

Hi guys here's my team for this gameweek.

    Hennessy
    Valencia, pieters, alonso
    Zaha, siggy, eriksen, davies
    Kane (c), aguero, lukaku

    Jaku, pennington, mcauley, phillips

    1ft & 0.2itb

Currently 2nd in ml 8 pts of top & 7 pts clear of 3rd

1st place team has sanchez and ibra

    2nd place team has ibra

I was thinking aguero to ibra (c) or
Mcauley, phillips & aguero to barragan, sanchez & benteke -8

    What would u do?

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

A'noon all. Already done King to Zaha for FT. 0.0 ITB. So, subs right? play de roon?

    Foster / Jak
    Valencia - Baines - Gibson
    Alli - Eriksen - Sanchez - Zaha
    Ibra (c) - Luka - Kane

Subs - De Roon, Robertson, Holgate

    A - Baines to Bailly (-4)
B - Baines to Bailly, Foster to Valdes (if fit)/Hennesey -8
    C - Save
    D - Other

    Ta !

    Team for this week then!

    De Gea
    Alonso Davies Bailly
    Zaha Son Alli Sanchez
    Lukaku Vardy Negredo (C)

    Bench: Jaku, Grosicki, Robertson, Yoshida.

So my bench is basically Hull which isn't great at home to Watford. Arguably a good time for bench boost if DGW's weren't a thing. Would swap Yoshida out.

    Benching dilemma

Play King (mid H) or Siggy (Stk H)

Or use my free transfer to bring in Gibson (dgw) for brunt and bench them both.

    Currently sitting on
    Heaton
    Valencia, Barragan, Maguire
    King, Alli. Eriksen, Zaha
    Zlat, Kaku, Kane

    (Siggy, Brunt, Pieters, Pickford)

worth replacing Siggy with Zaha for -4 ? (Already have Benteke)
I'm considering it based upon dgw but also next weeks fixtures where Zaha has Bur at home and Siggy is away to Man U

    1. Darklord_bg
      • 7 Years

Yes, do it. Siggy is done.

Siggy can score against anybody and also assist. He scored at Anfield and has scored against Man U. He has Stoke at home on saturday while Zaha has two tough games. I would keep Siggy for one more game and if he doesn't do anything you can transfer him out for gameweek 35.
