The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 37

Frustration is the only word for it.

In a compelling season that has tested even the most hardened and experienced Fantasy manager, it seems we are destined to be deprived of a truly satisfying double Gameweek.

So often the pillars that hold up our season finale, we speculate and strategise, whipping ourselves into a frenzy as we conjure visions of big individual hauls and three-figure totals.

Inevitably they rarely live up to our expectations but this season’s double Gameweeks feel flatter than ever, with the past 48 hours proving particularly exasperating.

Friday provided an ominous opening, with Chelsea’s victory wrapping up the title race to introduce rotation concerns, while also providing blanks for both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

Mason Holgate’s withdrawal for Everton provided an additional blow for those with the Bench Boost in play – an early marker for Saturday’s misery.

Today’s events included a variety of cruel twists.

Manchester City’s failure to keep a clean sheet, together with Kevin De Bruyne’s blank, provided immediate irritation.

That was followed by Victor Anichebe’s injury and Jordan Pickford’s one-point return, before today’s arch villains – Southampton – provided the coup de grace.

Having shaken off his tinkerman moniker, Saints boss Claude Puel regressed to punish our Bench Boost ambitions with seven changes.

Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic were nowhere to be seen, Jack Stephens sat unused on the bench. Then Middleborough played their part, notching an improbable consolation goal to snatch the points from the Southampton assets that remained.

Stoke City’s Peter Crouch then provided a sucker punch, quite literally, to deprive us of an Arsenal clean sheet and apply more salt to today’s wound.

Even this evening’s 12-point contribution from Alexis Sanchez, backed by over 450,000 with the captaincy, was a silver lining that had its cloud, the Chilean limping from the bet365 turf to cast doubt over his start against Sunderland in midweek.

He played on and scored while carrying the knock – an apparent thigh injury, perhaps a dead leg. We now have to hope that Sanchez has the opportunity to run at the Black Cats defence on Tuesday. With him, Gameweek 37 could yet deliver for so many.

Elsewhere today, it was perhaps typical that it was left to a pair of single fixture assets to provide some comfort, Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente and the prolific Josh King of Bournemouth repaying those who kept faith amid the clamour for twin-fixture targets.

The last two days provide a sobering reminder of how we can overplay the potential of a double Gameweek. But we’ll doubtless do it all over again, and also have to remain optimistic on what remains of Gameweek 37.

There are still many fixtures to be played out and, in all likelihood, further unexpected plot twists to come – some of which will hopefully turn more favourably for us Fantasy managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Gutted by the defensive performances today, but guess there is a lot of people in the same boat. Alexis and King saves the day! 63 points with 15 to play (if they all play..), and up to 6300 OR.

This is what I got set up for GW38:

    Cech
    Alonso - Yoshida - Clichy
    Alli - Alexis - Hazard - King - Sané
    Kane - Gabbiadini

    Bench: Pickford, Benteke, Stephens, Gibson.

1FT and 0.3 in the bank! What to do? Probably replace on of my strikers, but not too many alternatives in that price range.. Maybe Llorente if Swansea has to win?

They have the potential to be but this year isn't the year.

I find using the bench boost and all out attack in tandem at the back end of the season is pretty good for saving team balance, especially 37/38 like this year.

An article on "how we can overplay the potential of a double Gameweek". I don't know about you guy's but the last two GW's have more than lived up to my expectations so far, despite the almost enviable set backs along the way.

Back to back 100+ GW's from my squad is now looking like a formality, and my OR is almost a third of what it was 10 days a go, I can't wait for this time of the season again next year.

I started this season with the intention of being less hit adverse (16 taken, compared to 0 and 2 in the previous two season), but have had my worse year to date !

I think it's been shown that teams can be successful employing either strategy (many vs few hits).

The timing of taking hits, if needed, is really the essential part.

    3. Like an Egyptian Magician
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 12 months ago

There was a community post on this chat not too long ago basically saying that, looking at the raw numbers of last season, you see that the top 100k made less transfers(and hence took less hits) than the rest. You also see that the top 10k took less hits than the top 100k and on and on.
Then, once the article establishes the reality of the raw numbers, it goes on to conclude by the following: Higher ranked teams were the ones who initially picked the better (season-keeper) players at the start of the season. This gave them a better rank and pushed them to keep their outperforming players while lower ranked teams had to make more transfers in order to adjust and correct their mistakes.
So, to answer your question, the raw reality that higher ranked teams take less hits, is irrelevant because it all depends on how u start ur season. If (through luck, insight or homework) u pick the season-keepers early on, u will be less prone to take hits. If u start the season badly and have to play catch-up, u most likely have to take hits to make up ground.

I think Wenger already answered that question when he said post-match that "Sanchez wanted to come out on his own". This means that he went out without the medical staff's clearance/approval. This then means that he himself decided to preserve himself for the next game once he had killed the game with his goal. LoL but this then means that he will surely start against sunderland..

The jury votes kill this sh*tfest for the gamblers - and there's no other reason to follow it really. Basically, there can be no real surprises, because half of the votes come from the juries that consist of the same people whose opinion defines the favourite.

Betting on eurovision is a bad idea. The bookie favourites are basically the jury favourites, it's those who are most hyped by the "eurovision people". That means that there's 0 chance to really make money on this, because if some "artist" is not amongst the favourites before the competition, he's only really even competing for one half of the points, and thus there are no real surprisers worth playing.

The jury vote is at least 90% predictable. If the popular vote still matters, there is some predictability for it too. Which may give you a chance to make a little money if the 3rd favourite looks like the most likely to get good vote from people.

May as well be nowhere near, and to me his bench boost looks like it's missing 2 players. Which is not top.

Sanchez might not even play the 2nd game though and Jesus can easily be the highest scorer this week.

To all of you anxious about closing gaps, I was 72 points behind my ML leader after GW35. I'm now 28 points ahead with more to come this week. Helped by him taking four hits over two weeks.

Never inside Top1k........only once outside Top20k...

Selecting the wrong captain and benching high-scoring players are a consistent theme.
