Scout Report – Pascal Gross

Brighton and Hove Albion made their first move in the summer transfer market late last month with the acquisition of playmaker Pascal Gross from German outfit FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old arrives at the Amex Stadium on a four-year deal and, according to manager Chris Hughton, had no shortage of suitors to choose from:

“We are delighted that Pascal has opted to sign for us, amid interest from a number of clubs from the Premier League and across Europe, and I am pleased to welcome him to the club. He offers something different to our existing midfielders, as an attacking midfielder in a more advanced position, operating behind the forward line; he will give us a different and new option going into the new season.”

The History

Gross joined the youth set-up at 1899 Hoffenheim as a 17-year-old back in 2008.

After managing a mere five first-team appearances in three seasons, he made his way to second-tier outfit Karlsruhe, where he quickly established himself as a regular.

Three goals and a pair of assists in 24 first-team appearances earned Gross a move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2012 but he struggled to make his presence felt, providing just four goals and five assists in 59 appearances over his first two seasons.

The 2014/15 campaign proved a pivotal one for player and club alike, as Gross steered Ingolstadt into the Bundesliga on the back of seven goals and 23 assists in 34 appearances.

A quick glance at his output – one goal and four assists in 2015/16, followed by five goals and four assists last term – suggests that Gross struggled to adjust to the step up, yet the underlying numbers shed far more light on his abilities.

In each of his two seasons in the Bundesliga, Gross created more scoring chances (95 and 98) than any player, which is all the more impressive bearing in mind that Ingolstadt suffered the ignominy of relegation in 2016/17.

On the international scene, he turned out for the Germany U18 and U19 sides on a total of 12 occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

As mentioned in our article on Brighton’s promoted squad, Hughton mainly utilised a 4-4-2 set-up last season but the Seagulls boss has conceded that he’s already eyeing up a one-man frontline in a bid to tighten up in the top-flight:

“I think it’s difficult to go through a season playing 4-4-2, particularly as a new club. Leicester play it generally, but they are more established. I would see myself at times playing it, but also very much a 4-4-1-1.”

Although he’s versatile enough to play on either flank and in a central midfield berth, Hughton’s words suggest it is far more likely that Gross has been purchased to take up the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Crucially from a Fantasy perspective, the new boy’s exceptional delivery means that he is favourite be handed set-piece duties, while Gross has also shown in the past that he’s more than capable of tucking away spot-kicks, too.

In terms of creativity, his minutes per key pass – 29.8 in 2015/16 and 27.9 last season – are hugely impressive and far superior to new team-mate Anthony Knockaert. Indeed, that puts Gross just ahead of big-hitters Kevin De Bruyne (28), Christian Eriksen (28.3) and Mesut Ozil (28.5) in the previous domestic campaign.

Last season’s Championship Player of the Year, Seagulls right winger Knockaert – who racked up 15 goals and eight assists from his role on the right – is likely to garner some pre-season attention. Yet an average of 40.5 minutes per key pass in 2016/17 underlines just why Hughton has looked to boost his creative options. All the more so when you consider that fellow wide man Jiri Skalak was second for key passes, providing 39 in 31 outings.

Likely to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League, Gross certainly has the quality to emerge as a creative force to be reckoned with for Hughton’s side.

But six goals from 121 efforts on goal over his two years in the Bundesliga is a concern, particularly as 87 of those arrived from outside the box, underlining his penchant for long-range efforts.

But if he can settle in quickly and offer a favourable opening set of fixtures, Gross has the quality to rival Knockaert as the man most likely among the promoted contingent.

Just imagine if FPL make the following change this season

    GKs
    Defenders
    Defensive Mids, including all wingbacks
    Attacking Mids
    Strikers

Would it be so difficult to distinguish defensive mids and attacking mids? They could then alter the scoring for defensive mids such as 2 or 3 points for a CS.

How can it be, if players like Kante, Matic etc. are not realistic options? I know they're priced accordingly, but they're still priced too high - even a 4.5m - 5m defender has a decent chance of CS points (+baps).

Either the bap formula should reward them more in low scoring games or they should earn points in other ways.

Not everyone needs to be a realistic option. It's not play school where everyone's a winner. Just a nice simplistic game.

But the more legitimate options, the less template orientated the game is. Anything that increases the pool of legit options yet maintains simplicity is a good thing in my book.

Might be good for the minority of people that visit dedicated fantasy football websites, but not for the majority of normal players who just want to pick a few players and get on with it.

Not sure about that. If it's harder to build a template, people on this site might struggle!

It would be more fun to have more options in my opinion

Aye that's what I mean though. You might find it more fun, and it may well be more fun, but I can't imagine the likes of my other half knowing anything about how good a defensive option a certain player is. but she will know that Kane scores lots of goals. And that's how she picks her team. 2nd only to how good looking they are.

Exactly. DM's aren't going to be explosive point returners, but maybe in a cagey match say Chelsea - Spurs, Dier's defensive returns are preferred over Alli perhaps? It's tricky without over complicating the scoring rules but I'd like to see a solution like:

              0 - 0
              GK/Def = 6 points, DM = 4 points, all other positions = 2 points
              *GK/Def/DM main candidates for baps

              1 - 1
*goal scorers/assisters/DM's main candidates for baps

I propose a new 16 position reclassification system with scoring systems developed for each playing role.

      Goalkeepers
      Sweeper Keepers
      Liberos/Sweepers
      Centre-Backs
      Full-backs
      Wing-backs
      Defensive Midfielders
      Deep-lying playmakers
      Box-to-box midfielders
      Roaming playmakers
      Traditional wingers
      Attacking midfielders
      Trequartista/Enganche
      Inside forward
      Second striker
      Traditional striker

I always found it laughable that people thought this would solve all the problems. We've had pundits watching slow motions replays for decades now and even they can't agree on stuff so human judgement will still play a massive part in Video Reffing.

BTW this was a general comment, not aimed at the Alli incident, which looks like a mistake.

But multiple slow-mo angles compared to one look at full speed will clearly reduce the number of errors.

It will reduce a majority of errors hopefully, but not all.

There will always be those 50-50 decisions, which will be entirely dependant on the video ref.

Are you blind? Watch Varane's left leg. He clearly runs into Alli's right heel which then leads to him clipping his own ankle.

Varane is preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity without attempting to play the ball, ergo a clear red card.

People like you piss me off. Don't know the rules. Don't bother to watch the video closely. Still complains about the referee.

It's definitely a penalty. But it's no longer an automatic red card. It appeared clumsy/ accidental, in which case a penalty but not a red card.

        1. Ramboros
          • 12 Years

The rules clearly states that it's a red card if the tackler isn't in a position to play the ball, or isn't attempting to play the ball. What's this thing with people bringing up how the rules have been changed without knowing how it has been changed?

Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own
penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned unless:

The offence is holding, pulling or pushing or

The offending player does not attempt to play the ball or there is no
possibility for the player making the challenge to play the ball or

The offence is one which is punishable by a red card wherever it occurs on
the field of play (e.g. serious foul play, violent conduct etc.)

I hope you aren't too vision impaired to read the rules.

          1. Somalion
            • 14 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

I'll stand correct on this, my understanding from IFAB had been a trial of change in rules in which if the offence is judged to be accidental it is not an immediate red card, however as it says clearly from what you posted it includes being in a position to play the ball. So for that, and for my comments directed at you, I apologise.

However, your general attitude and immediate leap to getting pissed off when I had watched the footage very clearly still doesn't sit with me. It's fine if you thought I was in the wrong, I was, but I'm not going to put up with that kind of nonsense. One way to guarantee making absolutely no allies in life is to be immediately aggressive about every slight or irritant.

Alli clips his own ankle which is clear as day as well. Plus they went to the ref about the red card decision, which is exactly the point I was making about them getting it wrong. How that can ever be seen as intentional is purely ludicrous.

I've said it for years. So many contentious decisions are analysed over and over by pundits, players, refs and commentators who still can't always agree despite watching endless replays.

The man in the stand decision maker is just another person who could be unsure.

I'm not saying it's a reason not to have a video ref but anybody who thinks it will take all the controversy out of decisions is deluding themselves.

I've never seen anyone say it will take the controversy out of every decision.

Some do. It won't be the cure all, it'll just move the controversy upstairs sometimes.

There must be about a Billion pounds worth of football talent on that pitch tonight

    Pogba £85 million
    Sterling £45 million
    Stones £49 million
    Kane £200 million
    Mbappe £120 million

    you get the gist

England are probably the only international team that approaches friendlies the same way as competitive matches. I think that's why we look competitive friendlies then it all falls apart come competition time.

(Boring) James Milner is the embodiment of the England style and mentality.

Do you think England will get knocked out in the first round of the World Cup or will it be the first knockout round?

More likely first knockout stage after scrapping through qualifying round. Midfield is so poor.

That's so weird. I checked my transfers, and it appears to be a false memory. Maybe I just want to be rubbish at this game.
