Scout Report – Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have tonight confirmed their second signing of the summer transfer window, with the big-money acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette from Olympique Lyonnais.

Having already acquired wing-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke, Arsene Wenger has added the in-demand Frenchman to his attack for what is thought to be a club record fee of £46.5 million.

Wenger was understandably delighted to have finally got his man:

“We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher. As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth system, Lacazette made his debut for the club’s senior side in May 2010.

Mainly utilised as a winger for the next three seasons, the Frenchman flitted in and out of the first XI, producing just eight goals and six assists in 69 Ligue 1 outings, with 27 of those arriving off the bench.

However, Lacazette’s career took a turn for the better in the summer of 2013 after the-then cash-strapped Lyon were forced to sell their main striker, Lisandro Lopez.

Shifted into a centre-forward role, he never looked back. Utilised either as part of a front two or as a lone striker, the Gunners new boy has racked up an eye-catching 91 goals and 16 assists in 133 league appearances across the last four seasons, with a career-high 28 strikes last time out.

On the international stage, Lacazette represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21, scoring 19 times in 58 appearances.

The 26-year-old has since turned out on 11 occasions for the senior side, scoring his first – and only – international goal against Denmark in 2015.

The Prospects

As witnessed last season, Wenger seemed undecided over the lone striker role. The Gunners boss began with Alexis Sanchez up front before alternating Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck in the latter stages of 2016/17.

Lacazette looks likely to be the answer. Standing five foot nine, he’s certainly not a like-for-like replacement for Giroud – he won just 36% of his aerial duels last season (Giroud registered 55.7%) and scored twice from headers.

Instead, the new boy’s pace, work-rate and ability to run the channels will allow Arsenal to press from the front more efficiently – tellingly, Lacazette registered 31 successful tackles last term, more than any forward in the Premier League.

Considering that Giroud and Welbeck started 11 and eight league matches respectively in the previous campaign, Lacazette’s style of play, allied with that hefty price tag, certainly suggests that he’s set to command a regular role for the north London outfit.

From a Fantasy perspective, his potential from the spot could elevate the Frenchman in the Arsenal pecking order. He scored 11 penalties in all competitions last season and has netted 23 of 28 attempts across his career.

Looking at the new arrival’s goal conversion rate since being utilised through the middle from 2013/14 onwards, figures of 17.8%, 28.1%, 22.1% and last year’s 33.3% highlight his predatory nature.

To put that into perspective, Lacazette’s rate in 2016/17 bettered all regular starting strikers in the Premier League.

Indeed, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus – heralded as a similarly clinical finisher – produced his seven goals from 10 appearances and 24 attempts – a conversion rate of 29.2.

Lacazette goes to the trouble of explaining his ruthless finishing in his first Arsenal interview this evening.

“Every time I take a shot at goal it’s because I believe I can score. I don’t just shoot for the sake of it. I always try to choose the best option, whether that is to pass or to shoot. I also try to keep as calm as possible. All that is achieved by a lot of hard work in training.”

It’s worth noting that, while he produced just three assists in 2016/17, Lacazette created a chance for team-mates every 47.2 minutes. Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney – as the most creative FPL forward last season – topped the ranks with a rate of 45.3. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Diego Costa, who ended the season with 11 Fantasy assists (7 in Opta), produced a key pass every 73.5 minutes.

Of course, for all his impressive numbers, these were recorded in a different environment. It remains to be seen just how quickly Lacazette’s adapts to his new surrounds and the rigours of the Premier League.

Likely to be priced around 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League, Lacazette should benefit from Arsenal’s lack of Champions League matches, allowing Wenger to rest his main men for domestic duties as he eyes up a bid for the title.

Yet the future of Alexis Sanchez may ultimately determine how we assess the Gunners next season. If last term’s top-scoring FPL player chooses to stay and is again listed as a midfielder, his proven ability as a Fantasy asset could be difficult to ignore from the outset at least, allowing us time to assess Lacazette’s contribution.

Indeed, the Frenchman’s ability to press from the front could allow Sanchez and Mesut Ozil more freedom in the central support roles should Wenger keep the 3-4-2-1 formation. Having scored in each of his final two appearances, including the FA Cup winner against Chelsea, Aaron Ramsey could be another name in the mix next time out.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that the new boy’s chances of hitting the ground running have been boosted by a kind opening schedule. Arsenal offer home clashes with Leicester City, Bournemouth, West Brom and Brighton in addition to a trip to Stoke City in the first seven Gameweeks.

That early run could provide the catalyst for goals and points. It could even tempt Fantasy managers to overlook Harry Kane of Spurs and Jesus as the weapons of choice in attack.

Doesn't look bad but I'd want a real big hitter (Sanchez, De Bruyne, Eriksen/Alli, Mane/Coutinho) in midfield. Not sure if Mahrez and Salah will hit the ground running.

Rooney definitely is good enough to start.

        I've compared
The stats for Rooney and he's done much better this season than players like Lingard and Martial in every category from goals to pass completion.

He's actually still very fast look at uniteds pace tests for proof.

That was one game where he didn't play stirker he really needs to play stirker to play at his best.

Look at his goals at the end of last season he was the only one scoring for united.

Rooney would play striker alongside Giroud there's no way Siggurdson wouldn't play CAM.

4-1-2-1-2 narrow is my formation guess.

That is if Everton do indeed sign Rooney.

Rooney was United'a second highesr rated player in the 2015/2016 season.

I don't think anyone looks great playing united's defensive football just look at Mkhitarian this season playing at right wing back.

Rooney was put in the pocket of jamie carragher a few weeks back at michael carricks testimonial and hes been retired for the last few years. Dress it however you wish but i have been watching the guy with my own eyes werk in week out and he has nothing more to offer as a top level footballer

It was just a game for charity. He nearly scored too. Paul Scholes has been retired for a while too and he played really well

Rooney was at one point the best striker in the world and can bring a lot to Everton or even United if he stays just like Giggs did. A lot of people mistake a lapse in form as a sign of the player being past it but the same
thing happened with Giggs and he came back better than ever.

Look mate im well aware of how good he was. A true phenomenom in his pomp.. but for the love if god dont compare him to giggs who had a burning desire to look after his body doing yoga and eating clean and keeping body fat to a minimum. Rooney opted for the cigarettrs alcohol and dominos pizza route and it shows under his shirt and sadly on the pitch. Its over.

Potentially. If the players who had a great season price increases to a point I don't think they're worth having anymore I won't purchase them.

For example would you have King last season if he was priced at 10? Or consider him now if he's priced at 10?

Another player is Ozil who had a rough season but if he's much cheaper now because of it and regains his form he can be great value too and see profit being made.

One of the things I've been good at is generating income from my players and to do that I need to look at value on all fronts.

If someone looks like being a short term starter, I'm all for it. I favour an early WC, and want to keep as much of my available funds on the pitch as possible, especially at the start, where we're limited to 100m. If there isn't a likely prospect, though, I won't deliberately pick someone who will never earn any points, and may well suffer an early price drop.

I tend to have 4.0 bench fodder from the off - this tends to be someone only owned by a small number of people (unless I'm punting as with Amat last season that the 4.0 will play). The idea (obviously probably completely naive) is that the maybe 0.1 fall if it happens will be offset by the players I've brought in using the extra 0.5 potentially taking off in terms of price rises. Sounds fanciful now I write it.. the psychology of an FPL manager eh

I'm not up to date with price change mechanics from this season, but it used to be the case that price falls were somehow related to a percentage change in ownership. So, highly owned players required more transfers out to fall, and could be argued as 'safer' from a drop.

Of course, if people have that highly owned 4.0 in the expectation of expect points, they may well get rid en masse, whereas a less highly owned 4.0 might be exclusively held onto by FPL managers looking only to leave them rooted to the bench. I guess the only way to be safe from a drop is to pick a starting 4.0!

        1. Individual
          • 10 Years

Well, it was all guesswork tbh Ludo but it seemed to be dictated by the proportion of the overall number of owners selling that caused the drop to occur, if that makes sense (sorry, long day!)

So my thinking is if I get a 4.0 noone has ever heard of and not many own, that most people who buy him are also buying him as fodder rather than seriously expecting him to play. So hopefully you don't see a drop too quickly. Equally, you hope that the players you going for a 4.0 enable you to own will rise, so you kind of offset any small drops from your 4.0.

Again, it all seems a bit ludicrous to be "theory crafting" about a 0.1 drop/rise in price but last season it really drove behaviour, especially with the market being so volatile with more players than ever before. We'll have to see if/how FPL tweak that next season, but we can only speculate for now

      D. Shouldn't be, especially if find a 4.0 who starts and ends up with a good 2 or 3 way rotation. I would consider it, would also allow that other 0.5m to be spent elsewhere, Isn't that what all managers want? That missing 0.5m.

Ha ha. I put this on an old article initially!! I'd been considering Jonty’s earlier comment that lots of players Wildcard in GWs 4-6, I think I’ve found a reason why this makes sense. As you know, one transfer a week, carried over means two transfers every two weeks – a good way to play if you can wait a week and someone isn’t bright red and tumbling in price.

So no transfers before GW2 is two transfers before GW3. Now if you WC in the International break before GW4, you’d do no transfers before GW5, two before GW6, none before GW7, and (importantly) two in the International break before GW8; and following that trend you’d also get two transfers in the next International break before GW12. Perfect.

But, if you tried to hang on and not play the WC before GW4, it plays out as: two before GW3, none (importantly) in the International break before GW4, two before GW5, none before GW6, two before GW7, and (importantly again) none in the International break before GW8; unless you play your WC. But you still lost out on the max two transfers in the 1st International break, and if you hang on to the WC until the 3rd International break, you’re out of sequence for maximum transfers in the International breaks before the 4th and 8th GW’s.

The only way out of this conundrum as I see it is passing over the two transfers before GW3 to the International break in GW4 – this would allow you a single transfer before GW2 – might not be a bad thing… but you’d lose out on a transfer. Please advise if my reasoning is flawed.

Make one transfer prior to GW3 and then you have two for the international break.

Another small bonus is that it allows for playing the fixtures a little. Every team plays home and away once in GW1 and GW2*, then half will play at home again in GW3 - this gives you the option of focusing on the ten teams with two home matches in the first three, or three in the first five, then swapping them out for those with a home fixture in GW4 or GW6 to get your WC off to a good start.

The auctions are great fun at least. In many ways the best part of the game occurs before the season actually begins, so joining lots of draft leagues is a great way to stay entertained before kickoff

Haven't played draft fantasy PL, but from my experience of fantasy NFL, it actually massively favours engaged players throughout the season - there will be cheap players picked up after the draft that make a big difference (assuming the draft league doesn't have too many teams), and 'casuals' are much less likely to pick up on them. Who spots the form of a Josh King first? If Kane goes down, who has Son or Janssen? Over the course of a season, these moments together can be decisive.

All fantasy sports contain a level of "luck" this draft style is no different. Been playing in fantasy American football for 35 years. Granted I have never drafted using a budget, but it make for a different kind of FPL game. Not sure it really interests me to get involved. I like how FPL is currently set up, but allowing each team unique players (not having team that own the same players) does have a draw to it.

Anyone know where I can find the top FPL scorers from the past few seasons? Want to go back as far as I can.
        Thanks

Last year was Mahrez. Before that I'd say Suarez, RVP, Bale, Drogba, Ronaldo. Not sure how accurate that is or if I've let someone out.

For those of you looking at a Huddersfield defender (god knows why),

Scott Malone is the man you should pick, he is a serious attacking threat. Would not go near Tommy Smith now Malone has signed, as he is the obvious option in my opinion.

Tommy Smith pretty much played as a RW last season... If Wagner wants to play the same style in the Prem he may not be a bad pick?

            That's interesting.

I only saw the playoffs, and all I can say about Hudds tactics is that the sort of bus parking hoofball was absolutely dire. Looking at their transfers, seems to me they're advancing on those tactics in a way that could make their laterals, though not their game, more interesting.

Lacazette - what's your take? Price?

I wasn't going to say anything much about this lad, but since it's you who asks.

                Price 9.5-10? I think that's fair.

I've loved to watch Lacazette these last few years he has played CF at OL. He's very complete forward. Some present him as a speed merchant because he is fast, but he is much more than just pace (although he *is* fast). Great pressing, smooth touch and has a good bag of tricks to beat the defender, has that drive to get to the ball and create the attacks, not just waiting for them to happen. Leader in his team too. So he's not just about goalscoring. Of course, FPL wise that's a little downside, isn't it? As FPL managers, we just love poachers.

But he is also a goalscorer. His shot numbers are not crazy good. 2.7/90 inside the box last season, including penalties. But they are solid, good numbers, if he can finish. And that the can. He has really strong non-penalty conversion rates from everywhere for many seasons in row now. Over last 4 seasons:

                out of box 9.4%
penalty are (outside 6-yard box) 20.8%
                6-yard box 45%

Any players conversion rate can be incredibly high or pitifully low in a small sample, but 4 seasons is trustworthy to me and those are excellent numbers. I'm very sure that given time, he will succeed. Even if he, as anybody, has sometime a dry period, he can score, and that won't change anytime soon.

However, it's always a big change to go to a new club, in a new league, and it is not guaranteed that it will click immediately. I'll keep an eye on him during pre-season, but I tend to think it's unwise to get players who have changed team and league straight in your FPL team.

The move from OL style of attacking could actually be very smooth and easy to quite similarly playing Arsenal, though. Now that I think of it.

But still, I hope I can be the dullard I want to, and pick at least 13 safe choices. And a striker who just joined from another country is not that.

Now I am struggling on two fronts:

1.) I don't like to spend too much on forwards.
2.) Like you, I like tried and tested - even if mine are a bit maverick!

This is the worst conundrum I've faced since before my illness. Really don't know what to do.

Me too, me too. But I just hope I won't go all maverick as I tend to do, but can play it dullard as I'd like to. It's still a question, how will he play together with the rest of the team, will he get enough good scoring chances. And how high is he priced. If above 10, that's no deal for me without watching a few games first

Eager to see him in PL finally. But it's very hard to predict the move from Championship to PL. I guess he should have what it takes, but you can divide his output by 2 and proportionate it to something like 34-35 matches (supposing a normal season, no big injuries or bans).

Last time around to play the game we needed to deposit some money, and by depositing money it comes under betting/gambling which is banned in India.

If they keep the draft game for free this year (I highly doubt that) then there should be no trouble.

I like Jesus as an option, although I worry if Aguero stays at City the game time he would get would be shared with Kun.

Think he will play with Kun on occasion. From the left. Bernardo and sterling rotating right. Sane and aguero rotating

You're probably right, but I just think that City is going to be a minefield for 17/18 and it's going to be rotation madness. If Jesus proves to play and play well week in week-out, then he's in

Depends on price I suppose and what you can afford in your front 3

For the love of God everyone stay away from Huddersfield. No one consider them for anything you will find better rotation players in Brighton and Newcastle. The premiership is completely different than than the championship they will be lucky to escape the drop with all these crazy transfers happening.

Clear game plan, cheap prices and good first few fixtures. Can't lose much.

If Tommy Smith is 4.5 he is in my team for their kind early fixtures.

4 goals & 10 assists and basically played as a RW last season.

Looking at something like this ...

        Foster 4.5. Someone 4.0
        Trippier 5.5. Rudiger 6.0. 4.5. 4.5. 4.0
        Mane 9.5. Zaha 6.5. Klaasen 7.5. Pogba 8.0. 4.5. starter
        Kane 13.0. Jesus 10.5. Defoe 7.5

Pogba could be someone else. Maybe Ozil if he comes in cheap

Yes everyone keep an eye on Ozil and Pogba they're guranteed starters. All depends on their pricing

I like the idea of having Ozil & Pogba, they should be heavily involved for both sides, goals, assists, CS's, baps, set pieces. The dream sceanrio would be if the pair came at 16.5 or less

Rudiger might be a bench player.

Doubt it. He is fantastic. Can see him taking azpi spot and azpi rwb perhaps. Cahill spot up for grabs too

Nice, although think rudiger won't be nailed, mane might be more than 9.5, klassen's fixs terrible + unproven...

With liverpool's opening 5 games in 14 days & goals being shared between mane, coutinho, firmino, lallana, salah etc i'm starting to consider leaving them out of the first 3x GW's to see how they go. Basically i wonder would Ozil be a batter early bet than a liverpool mid?

Kane & Jesus should be class up front.

Simione has said he would prefer Costa to train with the team instead of playing somewhere else till Jan

If Lukaku goes to Chelsea I'll need to have a long think as will many others I imagine in regards to choosing between Hazard and Lukaku.
