Scout Report – Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have tonight confirmed their second signing of the summer transfer window, with the big-money acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette from Olympique Lyonnais.

Having already acquired wing-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke, Arsene Wenger has added the in-demand Frenchman to his attack for what is thought to be a club record fee of £46.5 million.

Wenger was understandably delighted to have finally got his man:

“We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher. As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth system, Lacazette made his debut for the club’s senior side in May 2010.

Mainly utilised as a winger for the next three seasons, the Frenchman flitted in and out of the first XI, producing just eight goals and six assists in 69 Ligue 1 outings, with 27 of those arriving off the bench.

However, Lacazette’s career took a turn for the better in the summer of 2013 after the-then cash-strapped Lyon were forced to sell their main striker, Lisandro Lopez.

Shifted into a centre-forward role, he never looked back. Utilised either as part of a front two or as a lone striker, the Gunners new boy has racked up an eye-catching 91 goals and 16 assists in 133 league appearances across the last four seasons, with a career-high 28 strikes last time out.

On the international stage, Lacazette represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21, scoring 19 times in 58 appearances.

The 26-year-old has since turned out on 11 occasions for the senior side, scoring his first – and only – international goal against Denmark in 2015.

The Prospects

As witnessed last season, Wenger seemed undecided over the lone striker role. The Gunners boss began with Alexis Sanchez up front before alternating Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck in the latter stages of 2016/17.

Lacazette looks likely to be the answer. Standing five foot nine, he’s certainly not a like-for-like replacement for Giroud – he won just 36% of his aerial duels last season (Giroud registered 55.7%) and scored twice from headers.

Instead, the new boy’s pace, work-rate and ability to run the channels will allow Arsenal to press from the front more efficiently – tellingly, Lacazette registered 31 successful tackles last term, more than any forward in the Premier League.

Considering that Giroud and Welbeck started 11 and eight league matches respectively in the previous campaign, Lacazette’s style of play, allied with that hefty price tag, certainly suggests that he’s set to command a regular role for the north London outfit.

From a Fantasy perspective, his potential from the spot could elevate the Frenchman in the Arsenal pecking order. He scored 11 penalties in all competitions last season and has netted 23 of 28 attempts across his career.

Looking at the new arrival’s goal conversion rate since being utilised through the middle from 2013/14 onwards, figures of 17.8%, 28.1%, 22.1% and last year’s 33.3% highlight his predatory nature.

To put that into perspective, Lacazette’s rate in 2016/17 bettered all regular starting strikers in the Premier League.

Indeed, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus – heralded as a similarly clinical finisher – produced his seven goals from 10 appearances and 24 attempts – a conversion rate of 29.2.

Lacazette goes to the trouble of explaining his ruthless finishing in his first Arsenal interview this evening.

“Every time I take a shot at goal it’s because I believe I can score. I don’t just shoot for the sake of it. I always try to choose the best option, whether that is to pass or to shoot. I also try to keep as calm as possible. All that is achieved by a lot of hard work in training.”

It’s worth noting that, while he produced just three assists in 2016/17, Lacazette created a chance for team-mates every 47.2 minutes. Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney – as the most creative FPL forward last season – topped the ranks with a rate of 45.3. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Diego Costa, who ended the season with 11 Fantasy assists (7 in Opta), produced a key pass every 73.5 minutes.

Of course, for all his impressive numbers, these were recorded in a different environment. It remains to be seen just how quickly Lacazette’s adapts to his new surrounds and the rigours of the Premier League.

Likely to be priced around 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League, Lacazette should benefit from Arsenal’s lack of Champions League matches, allowing Wenger to rest his main men for domestic duties as he eyes up a bid for the title.

Yet the future of Alexis Sanchez may ultimately determine how we assess the Gunners next season. If last term’s top-scoring FPL player chooses to stay and is again listed as a midfielder, his proven ability as a Fantasy asset could be difficult to ignore from the outset at least, allowing us time to assess Lacazette’s contribution.

Indeed, the Frenchman’s ability to press from the front could allow Sanchez and Mesut Ozil more freedom in the central support roles should Wenger keep the 3-4-2-1 formation. Having scored in each of his final two appearances, including the FA Cup winner against Chelsea, Aaron Ramsey could be another name in the mix next time out.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that the new boy’s chances of hitting the ground running have been boosted by a kind opening schedule. Arsenal offer home clashes with Leicester City, Bournemouth, West Brom and Brighton in addition to a trip to Stoke City in the first seven Gameweeks.

That early run could provide the catalyst for goals and points. It could even tempt Fantasy managers to overlook Harry Kane of Spurs and Jesus as the weapons of choice in attack.

Their only glaring position for upgrade is right wing. I would say Mahrez would be the perfect signing as is basically a better Lamela. Aside from that it would be squad depth they need

Difficult to get a decent striker who knows he will be second fiddle. Unless they get someone who can play winger and striker.

Nah.. in years gone by they would have made 4 or 5 signings by now and it got them nowhere. Been a lot more reserved since poch came in and now are in a position to add carefully in certain places. Their startin 11 is as good if not better than anything in the league

Would be much, MUCH, more worried about utd to be honest. Spurs have Toby, Verthongen, Davies, Trippier (and rose & walker still), plus wanyama, dier, dembele, son, Alli, Kane, Eriksen.... Utd have... Not much really, lots of over paid average mediocrity, nothing that will even go close to winning a league. They need an A-List attacker, which sadly Morata is not.

he's not the calibre of player utd need. They need a Bale or a CR7 unfortunately which just isn't going to happen. They should get top four by being miserly at the back & difficult to play against, and difficult to watch. But Spurs' squad is quite far ahead of utd at the minute imo

I would disagree. They actually haven't conceded that much shots nor goals. Yes, City scored 5 out of their 10 shots in one match in which Monaco shut them down for almost the whole match. Other than that, their first team doesn't have had the habit of conceding much.

Well either way pointing to a one off hat trick as something that is a sure reason he will tear it up in the pl was strange. I think hes a brilliant player but also think he is taking a step up by coming to england. Not sure why anybody would argue that.

I'm pointing at it as a mention that he scores (also scored again) against opponents that are clearly difficult to PL clubs, as an objection to your ignorant assumption that the league he plays in is easy. It is, in fact, quite defensive league, and difficult to score in.

And don't pretend your assumption of the league level isn't ignorant. It is obvious you don't know the league, you just assume that it is weak on the basis that you don't know much about it.

Top to bottom, Ligue1 is weaker than the PL. Yes, there are a handful of teams that will give the PL top 4 a run for the money, but below that, PL teams are more competitive.

I'm not sure who's upvoting all your comments, and why your tone is unnecessarily provocative.

Just a little earlier, you told me you have not heard of Seri or Tolisso. That kind of tells me that you don't actually even watch the biggest clubs.

What I'm saying is that the rating of Ligue 1 as simply easier is simply false. In fact, talking about competitiveness, it is much more even than PL, which is a league of notoriously two classes: the bottom, and the top, distinguished from each other by a great margin early on, and they tend further from each other.

In France, the distance between the top and bottom tends to stay much closer over the season. Less money, more defensive style of game, but more even league, and harder to get open scoring chances.

It shows that you don't watch Lyon. Tolisso was a key player before he got his €40M+ transfer to Bayern.

And the same goes other way round between leagues. It's not that PL is just harder than other leagues, it is that teams and leagues are different.

My last post tonight. Have to go. Anyway, it's pretty useless to argue with you about leagues other than PL as you just simply don't know about them. You should get some basic knowledge first. Would be more interesting for others to talk with you.

Mate, not for a moment was I comparing Zlatan to Laca. Every striker who comes from abroad, has it all to prove in a physical English league. Shevchenko, Torres, Drogba, no exceptions. The league they are coming from is generally not indicative of their performances in England. Just that the arguments right now sound a little like sour grapes since most big teams are looking for a striker and here is this underachieving club actually completing a on-paper half-decent deal. The general consensus is he's scored in a crap league, which maybe true, but then, it should have been applied to Zlatan too. His goals were proof of his brilliance whereas those of others are primarily because of the weakness of the league?

I'd love Stan to stay at 5.5m just worry his PPM is so high that he may get a price increase, want him in my team so bad & yeah Siggy I'm unsure about 7.5 is a bargain 8 is too much, one of those really

I'll get slaughtered on here for saying it but alsomliking the look of WBrom's midfielders this year - Phillips, Chadli, JRod should all be around 5.5 or 6.0 & i can see them actually scoring goals this year. A lot will avoid them too as their previous 2x season's scoring record under TP is categorical undeniable proof that they will not score goals this year. And Salmon Rondon of course.

I think if they can get the 3x guys above on the pitch regularly they'll have the quality to score goals. I'd be interested to see their goalscoring stats while Phillips had form for around a 10 game period last year before he got injured, chadli injured in spells last year too. If those guys are fit, i think they'll be good FPL assets

City don't have any wingbacks compared to the surplus of midfielders.

It's possible he won't be rotated much if he continues to perform for pep at a world class level.

Fernandinho was used there last season. Fixture congestion in Winter will be a whole new challenge for Alves. Add to that he's 34.

big difference from zabaleta to dani alves. He played champions league and everything with Juventus this season and had an incredible season as a starter for every game. Don't forget dani alves can play right mid too if his from is good then I am sure that he will be a good pick for fantasy and won't be subject to too much rotation except for the occasional rest.

Let's be honest the entire city squad will eventually be roatated and they are must have coverage team with Pep behind the helm so some compromise with the bench is needed.

Dani Alves in FPL would be too good to turn down. If Chelsea don't sign a LB it'll be worth paying 14.0m for both him & Alonso & going 4 or 5 at the back as they'll outscore all but the top couple of attackers imo.

Imagine a nailed on back 5 of

Alonso, Alves, Valencia, Baines, Trippier = 31m, cheap as chips

Very true, Bellerin could be a beast this year. Also Milner - if he is a penalty taking DEF for 5.5 or 6.0, and liverpool don't get a LB, can anyone afford not to select him? Even at 6.5

I'm gonna give him a few weeks to settle in. LEI, sto, liv is a tough start. Leicester can be solid and resilient, Stoke tend to do well against Arsenal, and Liverpool are great against the bigger teams. Lacazette penciled in for GW4 (BOU, che, WBA, BRI, wat) if he looks good.

There will be civil war at arsenal if he gets off to a bad start, squadrons of planes flying over the emirates with wenger out vs. Wenger in banners. A lot of pressure on someone unproven in the premiership & he won't be given any time to adjust. For 45m he'll be expected to be delivering goals from day 1

For me it definitely does. Lacazette likely to be 2m cheaper than Sanchez and probably on pens. As great as Alexis is I don't think he's worth the extra over Lacazette. If I want to double up there's Ozil who will be a good 3m cheaper than Sanchez.

Sanchez will be way overpriced playing on the left wing so Lacazette will be the way to go i reckon.

Hmm... I think each of them had a great relationship with Giroud, Özil in particular. It remains to be seen how they will play together with Lacazette. Can't know yet.

Arsenal fixtures are pretty mixed to start with.

Due to the variety of bg hitting midfielders available, I may go Lacazette.

They either are or they aren't. I didn't realise there was a degree of essentialness. Neither are essential atm imo 🙂

If prices are 12.0m and 10.5m respectively, I'd rather Sanchez.

I still am, Kane can be a captain option every week.

      Arsenal and Bournemouth for me.

Everton has already lost Deulofeu, and will likely lose Lukaku and Barkley. Their signings are good, but they will have massive holes offensively once those players are sold. I don't think Arsenal and Bournemouth will sell anyone important, so I find their signings to be more complementary.

Best End of Play: Man City. Can afford three of everything.
Worst than expected: West Ham. Linked with every striker out there, but a good deal still doesn't seem close.

There's some key Sky Fantasy Football rule changes this year.

    - Defenders don't start losing 1 point per goal conceded until their team has conceded 2.
    - Able to specify your captain for each day in advance (at the beginning of the game week).
    - Unlimited transfers (wildcard) between game week 4 and up until the first kick off of game week 5.
    - Unlimited transfers (wildcard) between game week 28 and up until the first kick off of game week 29.

The second change in particular means we don't have to dedicate as much time remembering to log in and change the captain. Has to be a good thing.

Yeah, I was surprised too. Brings it much closer to FPL.

Who knows, for those who like to take a transfer hit or two in FPL, not having the temptation to chase price rises in the Sky game means you can plan your WC without worrying about budget / being priced out.

I'm really keen on the Sky game this year. It'll be the first time I've played it. I just need to understand all the bonus points DM's and the like can earn.

Is there really a lot of pressure if a lot of people are viewing your team?
