Scout Report – Tammy Abraham

Back on Tuesday, Swansea City confirmed the signing of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan deal.

The England U21 international, who was also linked with moves to newly promoted sides Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion, believes Swansea’s style of play will enable him to build on his impressive loan spell for Championship outfit Bristol City:

“I enjoyed my time at Bristol City last season, playing regular first-team football and scoring goals. Hopefully, I can do the same at Swansea… I know it was a difficult season for them at times, but you could see that they always try and play nice football. That was a major factor in me joining Swansea. When teams play good football, it tends to create chances for the striker. Then it’s up to me to get myself in good positions and hopefully score some goals.”

The History

Abraham joined Chelsea at the age of seven and progressed all the way through the club’s academy system.

He was part of the side that won back-to-back UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup titles in 2015 and 2016 and was handed his Premier League debut by Guus Hiddink against Liverpool in May 2016, featuring as a late substitute.

The young striker appeared off the bench the following week against Leicester City before the Blues decided to send him out on a season-long loan to Championship side Bristol City for the 2016/17 campaign.

Abraham enjoyed a hugely successful season in the second tier, registering 23 goals and four assists in 41 league appearances in a team that could only finish 17th in the Championship.

Capped by England at U18 and U19 levels, managing seven goals in 19 matches, Abraham progressed to the U21s over the past year, and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European U21 Championship.

He scored his third goal for the U21s in the 2-2 draw semi-final against Germany, although he did miss in the penalty shootout.

The Prospects

While Fernando Llorente and Jordan Ayew struck up a strong partnership during the run-in last season, the failure of club-record signing Borja Baston made the need for Paul Clement to bolster his striking options pretty obvious.

Borja has since completed a season-long loan move to Malaga.

Abraham, who will link up with his new team-mates during the pre-season tour of America, will therefore compete with Llorente, Ayew and Oliver McBurnie for a starting berth.

For the final five matches of last season, Clement decided to play with two forwards in front of a midfield diamond, with Ayew’s pace, work rate and ability to drift to either flank perfectly suited alongside target man Llorente.

Providing the Spaniard is fully fit for the opening day trip to Southampton, after fracturing a bone in his lower arm in a cycling accident, he looks certain to occupy one of the two forward spots, with Abraham then likely to compete with Ayew for the other position.

Speaking about the forward options Clement now has available to him, the Swansea head coach revealed how they could be used in a number of different roles and systems:

“We have Tammy, Fernando Llorente, Jordan Ayew and Oli McBurnie. They are our four out-and-out strikers. I see all those players as being able to play down the middle on their own, or they can be paired up and in some cases play one behind another one.”

Like Ayew, Abraham boasts plenty of pace, is capable of getting in behind defences, and also has the ability to drift into the channels, although perhaps not quite as willingly as the Ghanaian.

It’s in the penalty area though, as Clement himself mentioned, where Abraham comes alive and looks to have the edge.

As Adi Viveash, one of the 19-year-old’s youth coaches at Chelsea stated, Abraham has shown his ability to time his runs into the box perfectly and has the composure and predatory instincts to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

But as this report suggests, Abraham also has similar traits to Ayew in terms of his willingness to track back and do his defensive work, which is important given Llorente’s limited mobility.

Abraham is also a good passer, and while his wiry frame means he needs to continue bulking up, his hold up does appear to be improving, with former England striker Alan Smith praising that part of his game during this summer’s tournament.

Looking at Abraham’s underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 30.86 minutes, bettering both Llorente (47.19) and Ayew (72.08).

Although he played in the second tier of English football, he did feature in a side that struggled in the Championship, with Llorente and Ayew, following his arrival in the January transfer window, part of a similar situation at Swansea.

What the numbers do suggest – certainly in comparison to Ayew – is that Abraham should offer a greater goal threat, despite the fact he’ll have to prove himself at a higher level.

That could mean that he is handed a higher price tag than the Ghana international, with Abraham perhaps in line to set us back 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Swansea’s schedule over the opening six Gameweeks (sot, MUN, cpl, NEW, tot, WAT) is fairly mixed, although a run of kind home fixtures through September, October and November means that their Fantasy assets might just be slow burners.

The challenge for Abraham initially will be to impress during pre-season, with Clement likely to favour Llorente and Ayew from the off following their end of season form.

But should Abraham impose himself early on, there’s every chance he could push for a starting berth, and become a viable budget forward option.

That’s on the proviso that Clement continues to play with two forwards though, with a switch back to the 4-3-3 system he favoured during the start of his reign at the Liberty Stadium likely to limit Abraham’s prospects.

There’s also another factor – ironically Chelsea’s reported interest in Llorente.

Having been courted as back-up to Diego Costa last season, reports now indicate that the Blues are stepping up their pursuit of Llorente once again. However, in the light of the announcement of Manchester United’s accepted bid for Romelu Lukaku, it remains to be seen if there is any real substance to those claims. Antonio Conte will surely be assessing other targets to bolster the Chelsea frontline.

A departure for Llorente would be a game changer for Abraham’s prospects. Although, again, it would likely result in Clement going back into the market.

Abraham is certainly highly thought of at his parent club, having just signed a new five-year contract with the champions, so he’ll be expected to continue his development in South Wales. It remains to be seen how much pitch time he will enjoy and, when it arrives, whether he can snap up the opportunities that come his way.

The young striker should have the confidence to kick on in a side that will supply ample service into the box. If he can command a regular starting role, his goalscoring record and potential price tag suggest that he could be a factor in our seasons. But, as it stands, he will have to fight to earn the position.

Many seem to think Sane is a big rotation risk? Let's say Pep has one holding milf, the inside left/LW position is surely the least likely rotational position?

For you, but what about for Pep? This is the problem.
I had Sane throughout his purple patch and i really want him again. i think he'll be a good price too, but I just can't be confident he'll get sufficient game time. I think all the offensive players will be heavily rotated, with the most nailed-on one possibly being Sanchez, who will be too expensive if I've got Kanekaku up top.

But I think the first choice front 6 will look like this:
          Fernandinho
          Silva. Kdb
          B.Silva Jesus. Sanchez

I think it would be a bad move to play Alexis deeper Netley. You also have players like Sterling, Delph, Fernando etc. I'm expecting a crazy amount of rotation like Pep used to do in Bayern. Theres a HT on it.

Delph may go te Stoke and there was a game where Sterling lost it a bit? At Sunderland?
I think Alexis will stay at Arsenal, the extra 125k a week seems nothing now.
Pep will want to win this, experimenting is over. He'll buy a few full-backs and hope Kompany stays fit.

Yep gonna be brutal rotation. A couple will likely prove immune though.

                Fernandinho/gundogan/Yaya competing for holding mid
                B Silva/Jesus/Sterling right wing
                Sane/Jesus/nolito left wing
Kdb/Silva/gundogan/b.silva for two attacking midfield spots
                Aguero/Jesus striker

I think kdb, Silva, sane and Jesus are clear first choice.

there's very little defensive cover there. and a whole other prem-worthy team of attackers on the bench. baffles me how they even consider buying more and more attackers, it's like a bad gambling addiction from their board.

There isn't a chance Sané is a rotation risk. He's the next big thing.

If Alexis is bought then he'd be playing as a false 9 with Jesus on the right. Would Sané play 38 league games? Not a chance, but he's definitely ahead of Sterling and probably Aguero in the pecking order, imo.

ahead of people means guaranteed champion's league which means definitely rotation risk. they have enough for two full teams of attackers plus subs, saying there "isn't a chance" is naive.

Has there been any discussion on Fabregas at 7m? I think that's a ridiculously good price given his form at the end of last season and the possibility of Matic leaving Chelsea.

Hazard starting the season injured should mean we can start with Fabregas, Willian or Pedro with a lot more confidence.

Pedro was probably my best signing last season. I seemed to time getting him when he was scoring for fun then jumped off at the right time.

Think I bought at 6.9m, sold for 7.1m, then bought again later for a little while.

Compensated for the less genius move of having Rondon upfront followed by Gabbi *shudders*

No. Matic will only leave if Bakayoko comes in, which leaves Fabregas in the same bench spot. Even with a formation change I don't see any room for him from Conte's apparent perspective. I don't really understand why he wasn't played more, gave us so much creativity in attack and super consistent. Bakayoko is slightly less attacking than Matic, so maybe Fab can make more sub appearances? With Hazard out I assume it would just be Willian and Pedro in the wide roles. Pedro can be an interesting shout again; he was really good at times but not quite good enough and terrible away from home.

How do people feel about rotation. Is it worth it with keepers, 3rd defender and perhaps 4th/5th mids with 3rd striker. Will chasing bandwagons and price risers just derail rotation plans?

Quite a few of the vets appear to be against rotation so obviously prior experiece has not been good! For me the idea of leaving points on the bench is acceptable if I still score more points overall using that method. Theoretically it should work. Oh by the way thanks for the TDF heads up ... I've a team full of mavericks for today.

        1. Postman Ty

Exactly right about the benched points; it will definitely happen but that doesn't mean you aren't better off with it. People dislike rotation because when they do chose wrong the memories stick, regardless of overall outcome. 2 seasons ago I went with keeper rotation and played the fixtures, shock results 4 or 5 weeks in a row ruined me mentally. Last season I stuck with Heaton all season and it paid off.
People also don't like having a 6ish mil player constantly on the bench, but I really don't mind. As long as you can find value players it's easy to budget and it gives you an attacking rotation option each week with a reasonable player benched in case of injury. Potentially relying on a 4.5 who gets 2 points each week is pretty worthless to me.

I guessed that might be the case...it can't be nice seeing points on the bench. I'm still in two minds on rotating but haven't ruled it out, especially for keepers and defence. Think forward positions will be too fluid chasing bandwagons for form and money.

The problem is that analysis reveals that basing a rotation on home and away is not the most efficient way of picking a combination, for keepers at least, but we nearly all do it (play the home keeper)

Thing is, of the two king of the mountain leagues, one league has ten managers and the other has seven. Doesn't seem to correspond to the numbers in original league. I've just had a thought, with the new code you passed out yesterday, only ffs regulars will get that. If that's the case I think I like this, didn't really want a swamped league with players I don't recognise, just regulars on here.

How do you think Leicester will do next season?

Their signings seem OK on paper but just have a feeling they will struggle massively.

Well they're not in Europe this time and the pressure is off somewhat, if they don't lose any key players they should do okay.

in fpl i cant see any go to players
In real life I think it is time for reconstruction
      -in defence maguire and chilwell must become regulars;
-mahrez needs to go like a bad smell to provide funds and allow d gray to fully emerge
-attack pecking order needs sort, slimani (forgotten man) will show his talent I suspect;nacho would be an asset

certainly not one of the worst 3
but for fpl a watching brief

What are the best league's to join to match my skills against the rest on here. I know a lot of people on here get really high rankings, I've played two seasons and finished inside top 50k both years( not too good but I had really bad start last year, tactics were off at start, and I took a few hits) and I want to play in a more fierce mini league's as I won both my main ones on here. I guess the ffs one is the best right?
