Scout Report – Steve Mounie

Having already splashed out on big money deals to bring in Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince, Huddersfield Town broke their club-record transfer for a third time to sign striker Steve Mounie from French club Montpellier.

The 22-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £11.44 million plus add-ons, and has penned a four-year deal with the Terriers.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner believes that the Benin international has the tools to flourish in the English top-flight:

“He has real physical attributes that should be perfect for the Premier League, plus we have already seen his talents as a football in his remarkable season in France… At just 22 years old, he is only going to improve too. Given what he is already capable of, that is very exciting.”

The History

Born in Parakou, Benin, Mounie moved to France as a youngster and started his professional career at Montpellier’s academy.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a cup tie against AC Ajaccio in October 2014, but had to wait until the start of the 2015/16 season to make his league bow.

In August 2015, Montpellier sent Mounie on a season-long loan to Ligue 2 outfit Nimes in order to gain valuable first-team experience.

Mounie took his chance to impress, registering 11 goals and five assists in 32 league appearances, returning to Montpellier last summer ready to establish himself in their first-team squad.

He produced an ever better goal return last term, netting 14 times and managing three assists from 35 league outings in a side that could only finish 15th in Ligue 1.

Mounie has made six appearances for Benin, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

While Wagner added Belgian international Laurent Depoitre last month, the need to bolster his attacking options was clear after his side managed just 56 goals in their 46 league matches last season.

Mounie’s strengths appear very similar to Depoitre. Both players are fearsome in the air, although the former boasts superior athleticism, which could be key given that the “Terriers’ identity” places great emphasis on pressing from the front.

The Benin international, who stands at 6ft 3in tall, averaged a staggering 8.4 successful aerial duels per match last term, while six of his 14 league goals came from headers.

His other eight goals were scored from inside the penalty area on his favoured right foot, with several smart finishes highlighting his composure and showcasing a sound technical ability.

Mounie also possesses good movement and pace for a player of his size and is able to drift out wide and play as a winger if required. However, his link-up play has been criticised, particularly in terms of his first touch.

Impressively, the 22-year-old averaged a shot every 26.95 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, which bettered Arsenal’s club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette for Lyon (28.67).

However, his conversion rate is far from comparable. While Lacazette boasts a laudable 33%, Mounie recorded just 13.3% in the same division.

In fairness, that is typical for a target man who registered 41% of his efforts as headers; only 9.5% of Lacazette’s shots were aerial attempts.

When we look for comparisons in the Premier League, Christian Benteke fired 105 shots for Crystal Palace in 2016/17 – the same number as Mounie for Montpellier – converting 14.3% into goals. More than 49% of Benteke’s efforts were headers.

There are clear parallels to be drawn and, like Benteke, Huddersfield’s new striker will flourish only if fed with a regular supply and a variety of crosses. It remains to be seen if Wagner’s side are equipped to deliver; recent signings Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince are likely to be key figures in that respect.

Given the outlay, Mounie would seem the favourite to start in the lone striker role for the Terriers in Wagner’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. That could see him priced between 6.0 and 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League – slightly more expensive than fellow signing Depoitre.

He’s already been added as an 8.5 option in Sky Sports – an identical price to his new Belgian team-mate. That could certainly earn him attention as a third forward option should he settle quickly.

Considering Huddersfield’s favourable opening fixtures (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), that’s clearly a possibility.

We won’t be short of attacking options from Wagner’s side though, with Ince, Mooy and the 12-goal Elias Kachunga also set to vie for our attention. The classification and price of the latter may well be decisive.

For now, Huddersfield’s aggressive recruitment drive demonstrates that the Yorkshire club are determined to seize their chance in the top flight. That’s reassuring for us Fantasy managers, who will look to unearth some value from Wagner’s ranks.

We will be paying keen attention to the pre-season form and formation, with a Huddersfield attacker very much in our thoughts as an early makeweight.

Time will tell whether Mounie will emerge as the go-to option, but his credentials at least suggest that he has the potential to grow as a factor in Premier League.

At 23 Aubameyang wasn't worth half of what Lukaku is worth now.

Not madness at all. If you think you'll get more points spreading that money around, than do it. I personally will be trying to fit him in my squad, but am opening to ditching him. I haven't Aguero all of last season and used the money grab Hazard and Sanchez.

Well it depends on your objectives I guess. If you want to prioritize OR, Kane is basically essential. If you focus on MLs, it depends.

I disagree with that completely. While I think Kane is in for a monstrous season, maybe Kane + 6.0 mid will be outscored Lacazette + 8.5 mid. I think Kane will be one of the highest individual scorers, but this is all about the total points you can get with your budget..

Hmmm...yes. Sometimes the ownership factor of a player can hinder your quest for points, as you just saw! But then captaincy comes into it in that regard of points. We don't know how reliable/unreliable Lacazette is at the moment.

Not completely trusting of Spurs/Kane at Wembley. Will be an interesting season for them and those final two games skew the stats. 15 goals of 29 at the Lane, but prior to Lei/Hul, 15 of 22.

A very poor 300k. Was just one of those seasons I suppose. Looking at where I went wrong, I didn't have enough patience with players as I was after price rises in the volatile market. And when I was, it wasn't the right decision. Also some 50/50 decisions I just got wrong. E.g., Evans over McAuley, Coleman over Baines.

Do we think Lukaku will be a good target for Pogba assists? I am thinking of not getting Lukaku and getting Pogba instead as he will be cheaper and I think if they buy a DM then Pogba will be able to play a more advanced role and will then get assists and goals. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think this is going to happening. Pogba has been pulling the strings for United and they just haven't been scoring. If Lukaku can score, and Pogba has creative freedom, I think both will be great options. Hoping that Pogba will stay at a similar price due to his poor fantasy season in 2016.

I'm getting both. As we know, Pogba had promising stats last season, creating many chances. Ludo also posted some stats the other day about how Lukaku converts 70 odd per cent of big chances, considerably higher than Ibra's rate. I think they could be a fantasy match made in heaven. However, just going with Pogba is of course a viable choice.

      1. The Big Fella
        • 7 Years

I would like both but with Lukaku's stellar season last season, his price is going to be high and I already fancy Kane and/or Aguero. As Pogba is, inevitably, the cheaper option of the two I think I will just go him. If I have a spare 10-11m then I will consider Lukaku too. My other issue with Rom is that Everton didn't do too well away from home last season in terms of goals scored and that form may carry over to United.

I think Pep warmed to him at the end of the season. His output increased and I think he will be cheaper this year. I think if he stays at City he will play. If he goes to absolutely any other club in the league, he will be the main man too. Best striker in the league. He is also on pens (albeit, he had a few a dodgy ones last season).

I'd like to see the pre-season matches and other transfers before I made a decision. I counted 12 players for 6 positions if he brings in Sanchez too. Somebody has to give somewhere. All other things equal (gametime etc.), I would go with Aguero over Jesus though, yes.

I think Pogba's going to be overpriced again. At this moment I'd prefer to take a punt on whoever is the CAM in that team, whether it's Mata or Mhikityaran

Mkhi is surely the more nailed of those 2?
I think he could be great this season after settling in last season, will mourinho give him enough game time though?

I agree. He does play on the wing more though from what I recall. I really rate Mata in the number 10 role and feel sorry for him as he always seems to be overlooked.

I am thinking of punting on mkhi as my 3rd United player, as long as he's priced considerably lower than last season...good idea? He's pretty much my only punt, I'll go very safe apart from him

I want guaranteed minutes if I go for players so not for me. That said, if he is considerably cheaper, he may be worth a look. Still not for me though.

I guess they could even both start with one on the wing opposite Martial. Mourinho would love to stick with the same 11 players if they're winning games, otherwise he's going to be shifting around a lot. That's why I'd fear even if Mkhi starts a bunch in pre-season, if they get off to a bad start he'll start tinkering around again

            • 8 Years

All good points. Martial could be a great option actually if he doesn't sign another striker or attacking mid (ie perisic/bale) but I feel even then, mkhi has to play loads, his quality is undeniable.
Do you know what it is the mourinho doesn't like about him?

Hmm yeah agree with this, guys - from our perspective, Mounie a calculated risk by Wagner. Only one good season, was at Nimes in L2 in 15/16. A bit of a big man who is an aerial threat! A Sam Vokes-esque ~120 pts is what we expect, and a pricetag of 6.0-6.5

In GW5 when it is crystal clear that Josh King will be playing the entire season in the number 10 role behind Defoe, will FPL apologise for their ridiculous decision today?

I'm staggered they have reclassified him as a forward. Where is the simple common sense? What utter idiots.

One of the biggest stars of FPL last season ruined. No one is going to go near him now. Well done FPL. Mission accomplished.

I wouldn't mind if he was going to actually play up front, but it is so abundantly clear he would never play as a striker this season.

Certainly agree it's a bit odd. With Defoe, Afobe and Wilson able to play up top already, it is logical to assume that King will drop back to AMC. It's a shame as it rules him out of the game. But I wouldn't rule him out completely; he could figure if he finds form again and circumstances go his way (e.g. injuries elsewhere) like they did H2 this season

As TriggerLips said in his article, Reverse out of position players never do well.

Josh King would have got 25 fewer points as a forward last season.

I am disappointed about King, though, due to the warm glow his goals gave me last year. Reverse oop is sad, but the player could still feature eventually. Who knows. It's definitely a bold call by FPL, I just doubt it's the right one

King is a striker that was put on the wing because he's a poor target man and not a great finisher. Most of the time he was a winger in a 4-3-3. When he joined Bournemouth they played 4-4-2/4-4-1-1, hence he had to play in a deeper position without actually being a defensive player.

Now he has moved back up front, to a second striker position. Last season he scored something like 12 goals in 15 games after moving to that role. Overall he scored 16 goals. Benteke in comparison scored 15 goals playing every game as a striker. Who's the cheaper player out of those two?

Every single player that equaled King's goal tally last year, is going to be priced at 10.0+ this year. It's nonsense that King's FPL prospect has been killed by reclassification.

Benteke and Salah 0.5 higher than I would've hoped. Ince at 6.0 seems a bit steep as well. Can't see Stanislas, Phillips, etc. being cheaper than him. This is going to be tough.

It's such a 50/50 on Sanchez's classification. Striker could have a really ruinous effect on him as an asset imo. Got a sneaky suspicion Ozil could have a downgrade in price (9.0 from 15/16 would be yummy)... Could that mean Alexis loses some shine? Idle speculation ofc

50/50? God i'd be shocked if he is a striker next year! But either way , classified as a mid/striker , Sanchez wont be in my GW1.
And yes , im looking at Ozil too...at 9.0m he would be tastyyy.
