Moving Target

Moving Target – Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United have finally ended speculation surrounding the future of striker Romelu Lukaku by officially announcing a deal which brings the Belgian to Old Trafford from Everton for a rumoured fee of £75m.

It represents a major coup for United and Jose Mourinho, with Lukaku widely expected to make a return to Chelsea to rejoin the champions under Antonio Conte. But United moved swiftly, perhaps covertly, to capture a player who has blossomed into the one of the most feared and prolific strikers in the Premier League.

In a quite extraordinary chain of events, Lukaku gave his first interview confirming the move to United prior to the official announcement. As part of that, he stressed that, despite rumoured late intervention Chelsea, the striker’s mind was already made up.

“This is an opportunity that I’ve always wanted since I was a child…I didn’t have to think twice…Who would say no to the biggest club in the world?”

Lukaku also dedicated a special mention for Mourinho, having served under him at Chelsea.

Mourinho was unable to give Lukaku opportunities, loaning him to West Brom and then later allowing a permanent move to Everton, without insisting on a buy-back clause. Ironically, that decision surely helped seal the deal for United years later.

It’s clear from Lukaku’s statements, there is no animosity felt on his part.

“We were together under different circumstances. Obviously, the first time when I met him, I was still a young kid, and I was eager to play. And he understood my decision why I left at the time…I think he wants to improve me, make me a better player than I am today, which is good. I always want to improve…I think it’s the perfect opportunity. I’m 24. I never won a major trophy, but I’m eager to win something and to be part of a team that wins trophies, and I think he’s the right guy to help me in that.”

The History

A product of the Anderlecht youth academy, Lukaku made his first-team debut in May 2009, just less than two weeks after his sixteenth birthday.

The Belgian wasted no time in settling as a regular and racked up 31 goals and 12 assists in 62 outings over the next two seasons, which included play-off matches.

Two goals in as many at the start of 2011/12 persuaded long-time suitors Chelsea to splash the cash before the closure of the summer transfer window. But Lukaku was unable to nail down a spot in the first-team and was handed just a single start in the league, with a further seven appearances off the bench.

Loaned out to West Brom in 2012/13, the frontman thrived with the security of regular pitch time and delivered 17 goals and seven assists in 35 league matches for the midlands side.

He returned to the Bridge the following summer but – somewhat ironically – failed to convince the incoming manager Mourinho. Farmed out on loan to Everton, he delivered 15 goals and nine FPL assists in 31 league outings under Roberto Martinez.

After making the switch permanent in June 2014, Lukaku produced a further 28 goals and 13 assists over the next two seasons with the Spaniard at the helm before stepping up a level under new manager Ronald Koeman.

In the Dutchman’s first season in charge, Lukaku bagged 25 goals and six assists to cement his place as one of the most reliable big-hitters across the Fantasy games and spark a summer scramble for his services.

On the international stage, the forward played a total of 10 times for the Belgium U15, U16 and U18s, scoring twice. Handed his senior debut back in 2010, he has notched 20 times in 57 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that only two United players scored more than five goals in last season’s Premier League – the now-departed Zlatan Ibrahimovic (17) and Juan Mata (six) – the need for attacking reinforcements is obvious.

Standing six foot three, Lukaku is tailor-made as a lone striker for Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formations. Like United’s previous reported target Alvaro Morata, he ticks all the boxes – strong in the air (six goals came from headers) with an ability to hold up the ball and bring team-mates into play.

Crucially, though, the Belgian also offers United pace up front – something they lacked badly with Ibrahimovic last term.

We saw Mourinho address this issue in the Gameweek 33 win over Chelsea, benching the veteran and countering with the fleet-footed talents of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.

From a tactical perspective, Lukaku’s all-round game now offers Mourinho greater variety and could see United sitting deeper and hitting on the break more often against rivals.

As evidenced by the team data, United’s attack underperformed last term. They were fourth for shots (591) yet a lack of cutting edge saw them drop to eighth for goals, with 54 strikes to their name.

Despite scoring 17 times, Ibrahimovic was more culpable than most. Although he missed ten league matches last term through injury or suspension, the Swede still finished second top forward for total attempts (115) and also claimed a top-four spot for efforts in the box (80).

His average of 21.2 minutes per attempt was quicker than Lukaku’s 29.7, yet he converted only 14.8% of his chances, which was some way behind the Belgian’s 22.7%.

The new arrival fired five shots less (110) than the veteran but scored eight more goals (25) on his way to finishing runner-up to Harry Kane for the Golden Boot.

The close-range numbers are particularly encouraging for Lukaku. He was identical to Ibrahimovic for shots in the box (80) but netted 24 of them – joint-top with Kane – compared with the Swede’s 13.

It was a similar story when it came to big chances. Ibrahimovic was particularly poor for this statistic and scored just seven of his 23, whereas Lukaku netted 18 of 25 – again, that was joint-top with Kane and all the more impressive when you consider that only one of Lukaku’s goals arrived from the penalty spot.

In terms of creativity, Lukaku and Ibrahimovic were joint-top for key passes (47) and big chances created (eight) among FPL forwards, though the latter was quicker in teeing up a team-mate by 51.9 minutes to 69.5.

As a proven talent in the English top-flight, Lukaku needs no time to settle and will be expected to come in around £11.5m or more in Fantasy Premier League.

With Ibrahimovic and Rooney now departed, the new man should also claim penalty kicks to boost his appeal and potential output further.

Lukaku’s arrival looks set to consign the likes of Rashford and Anthony Martial to roles on the flanks once again, with the pair fighting for minutes along with Lingard, Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

There’s also real hope and expectation that Paul Pogba could kick on this time out – he sat seventh for total attempts (92) among FPL midfielders but found the net on just five occasions.

A close friend of Lukaku, Pogba was United’s top creator last term, supplying 57 key passes, yet earned just four assists. With a clinical finisher leading the line, the Frenchman’s all-round potential looks to have improved. He was confirmed as an 8.0 midfielder only yesterday.

Yet Lukaku’s proven Premier League pedigree suggests he could quickly become our go-to option for an attack that has admittedly flattered to deceive in recent times.

Certainly, United’s opening seven fixtures (WHM, swa, LEI, sto, EVE, sot, CPL) strengthen his chances of making an immediate impression at Old Trafford.

With the likes of Kane, Gabriel Jesus and Alexandre Lacazette also offering serious competition for places in our opening three-man frontlines, the quest for value in midfield could be more crucial than ever this time around.

Okay, since I'm bored, let's have one last DZ-esque conversation:

How did you come to supporting the PL club that you do, and what's your best memory? And if you support your local club, what's your best memory?

I'm considering putting this in my college apps as i really enjoy fpl I am a rising senior.

The 2014 world cup was the first time I chose to watch soccer. The first game I watched was the game between the netherlands and spain. Blinds cross to RVP for a divine header is my favorite goal since I have been watching soccer. RVP ran up and high fived LVG his soon to be manager. While things didn't work out with LVG the curiosity about things to come made me a united fan.

Interesting story. Wouldn't write about it in college apps unless you feel extremely strongly about it...sports essays are considered "generic". Just a tip, but if you feel that strongly about it, go for it.

I have lots to talk about. Colleges want to know about what you do for fun. This would be one part of the application. Obviously if I could only talk about one thing it wouldn't be FPL. That's silly.

Many times IT pros don't spend time making the databases very secure, they rather teach clueless people how to turn on and off the technology. Sounds like an over exaggeration but it is common.

'if you support your local club'. Can't believe there are people that don't support their local club.

Best memory was Plymouth being in the playoff spots in the Championship briefly, when we had Ebanks-Blake, Bolasie, Puncheon, Barnes etc.

Could have been an alright PL team with the right owners keeping them together...

You can support your local team where you are as well!

We even had Pulis as manager...

Yeah I think everything was staked on England hosting the World Cup. Plymouth would've been one of the host cities and would've got lots of $$$ to upgrade the stadium and infrastructure etc.

When it didn't happen, all the outside interest dried up and everything had to be sold. 🙁

Great question mate.. one of if not the first games of football i ever watched live on television was the 1990 FA cup final between Man United and Crystal Palace.. i was six years of age and i remember being mesmerised by the occasion and in particular this team that were playing in an all white strip.. thank god that was United and not Palace lol.. from then on i followed religiously and fell in love with the game later that summer during World Cup Italia 90.. from that moment on it was Manchester United and i lived and breathed it from then til now and will continue to til i'm gone.. i was every bit as fanatical as a 7 8 or 9 year old as i am still now.. as for best memory i could write a list tbh i have been very fortunate to have witnessed our most successful period in the clubs history but gun to my head it has to be the CL final 99.. nothing comes close to the emotions that night

In my case, my father was a huge Argentina fan (Maradona era was the first time he watched football on TV) and he brought me up that way. First game I recall watching was the Confederations Cup Final of 2005. World Cup 2006, I started really watching football, and Argentina were a joy to watch. Riquelme, Crespo, Sorin, Ayala...absolute legends, and I loved Crespo and Riquelme the most. Started watching Serie A and supported Inter (Crespo, of course) and then my cousins convinced me to watch PL. So I had to choose a team and obviously I was gonna pick the team with Argentines on it. Newcastle had Coloccini and Gutierrez, City had Tevez and Zabaleta. I went with City because I loved Tevez and I love the color blue...and the rest is history!

I'm fairly certain that if Tevez had stayed at United, I would've been a United fan...and that's always a striking thought 😉 Never would I have imagined that City would later become a farming ground of Argentines haha

Favorite memory has to be the Aguero goal against QPR, though I didn't witness it. Tears flowing down my face and frustrated, I left to take a shower and cool off around the 89th minute. Took a real quick shower, got out, saw that the score was 2-2 on my phone and I thought "It's gonna be 3-2" and then I heard screams from downstairs...rushed down half-naked and witnessed a complete stack of City players...and underneath, my Argentine legend Kun Aguero. Still gutted that I missed it but I got down in time to see him get mobbed.

With Argentina, I've got three moments of complete euphoria. Palermo's late winner against Peru, Di Maria's late goal against Switzerland, and Maxi Rodriguez's penalty against Netherlands...

Gives me chills just typing this stuff out

I'm telling you man, the punch you felt when Kun scored was just like us when Mackie scored...felt like the wind was knocked out of me. Typical City and all that...we had very little faith and when Zabaleta scored we believed...and then everything fell apart. I still cannot believe that comeback, gives me chills every time.

Was an amazing season though, I still remember the euphoria of Wigan beating you guys and Everton's comeback...and plenty of drama from our end as well. Both teams gave their everything.

Aye 4-2 up against Everton and we drew 4-4 that was the killer blow in reality and going into the final day there it was a foregone conclusion City would do their bit at home to QPR but as it panned out there was real hope for a long time in that game until it was taken away with one kick.. went on a bender after that lol.. did make winning the title back the next year inspired by RVP all the sweeter though

The 1-0 victory with the Kompany goal was one of the biggest moments for me...I never thought we'd win with United's defensive setup...was an amazing moment. And it had to be Kompany...

Following season was so forgettable for us, United wrapped it up efficiently. Still enjoyed Aguero's solo goal in our win against you guys...felt like the only thing we salvaged from that season.

It's kinda becoming a trend now, and I really enjoy it. Did some presentations on it during my studies and people bought into it. Got a long way to go though.

Americans can't fathom a low scoring game. What they don't realize is that if we gave every goal six points, we'd have some high scoring games too 😉

Unfortunately there is no space in the US marketing pie for real football. Only a 15 mins interval for commercials. I feel that the game is followed mainly by immigrants. Specially Spanish decent people are the ones that push the game a little bit in the States.

It is gaining in popularity, especially among the younger generation. I went to an Atlanta MLS match a few weeks ago and it was sold out and extremely loud. It will never match American football or basketball in popularity, but I think it will continue to grow into a strong market.

Lived in Cornwall, me an my mate caught train up to London was about Sixteen at time. First time in the big city. Memorable day out. Trouble on way to ground, trouble in ground and trouble after. We were shItting it.

Great match though seeing Hoddle, Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Then after we went into town to the Marquee club saw a band called the yobs (Boys) and a couple of other punk bands, got well wasted, slept it off on the night train back. Cracking day out.

Hoddle was sublime but his best years would have been just before my time

Spurs were always a team i admired growing up too even when they were shite they always played good stuff and had one or two top quality players.. Gazza and Lineker then Klinsmann and Sheringham Ginola and Ferdinand etc

Yeah, always loved their style of play. Hoddle waas amazing to watch, had the ball on a string and looked like he had so much time, while the Two Argentinians were a real novelty back then, about the only Two foreign players in the league. If you check out the teamsheet in that link I gave Man U entirely home grown team, as were most back then

When I was a undergraduate student, I used to live as a paying guest with three others. All of them were Manchester United supporters. Before that, I didn't know much about footie and for me Barcelona was the only good team in the world.
Because of the constant discussions about football around me, I started following the game. Now came the tough part. Choosing the club. It was never going to be Man Utd because of the arrogance of my friends.
The first game I watched was Liverpool vs Arsenal(5-1) in 2013-14. I became a Liverpool fan.

The constant bickering of my friends played a part. Remember Man Utd had a great season that year. They used to talk about David Moyes like he was some Messiah In the beginning. They became more humble as the season passed.

Can't help but feel sorry for him he wasn't given much choice in the matter Fergie drove to his house and told him he was retiring and he would take over.. couldn't very well turn it down tbf

when i was younger here we only really got to watch the FA cup on late night - it was the only time i was ever allowed to stay up that night. Fell in love with his passion watching United play and was hooked.
I've done a fair bit of travel over the years, but my first European away game was Milan v United at the San Siro, a win, seeing Rooney score a brace, Beckham play for AC, and Ronaldhino scoring. That was my stand out to watch live.

Arsenal. Growing up in the southern part of the US, I had almost no exposure to professional football (i.e. soccer here). I remember watching the World Cup in 1986 and enjoying it despite the fact that games were interrupted by commercials. But I never experienced high level club football until I married my English wife. Now she hates football and sports in general, but her father is a huge Arsenal supporter and has had season tickets for years. When we would go England, he would take me to Arsenal matches. I was hooked. I really loved the sport and the Premier League in particular. And I still look forward to going to the Emirates when in England for Christmas and New Years. So far, Arsenal have not lost any matches I have attended, which leaves me in good stead with my father in law.

Sadly, I don't support a side. At some point, one will move me, but as of now I enjoy the sport with no particular allegiance to a team, just players.

I'm American. Started playing when I was 6 (am 44 now), played through high school, played division 1 in college, and still play in competitive men's leagues, but wasn't a "fan" of the sport growing up because we had little access to televised matches, and soccer as a pro sport in America was virtually non-existent.

I got into FPL about five years ago and it appeals to my analytical brain. I appreciate the sport and its beauty, LOVE watching it, but have no home team or allegiance to speak of. Now, I enjoy watching Spurs more than any other PL side - I enjoy their attacking style of play - but I'm not crushed when they lose.

I played at Western Kentucky in the early 90s, before Title IX killed the program. It was a solid, mid-major program in the Sun Belt Conference that included UNC Charlotte, Old Dominion, UAB, South Florida, Jacksonville, South Alabama, and a few others. Was a fun way to show up at college and immediately have 22 great friends, and to see the country through playing soccer.

Title IX didn't kill men's sports, ADs used it as an excuse to cut non revenue sports.

This is not entirely true. But, thanks.

Women's soccer didn't exist at WKU when I played there. It does now. It's far from revenue-generating.

Had Title IX not been passed, I'm 100% certain men's soccer would still exist at my college.

You are correct that Title IX resulted in something far from its intended consequence. But the "excuse," as you put it, was only created out of the need to match the number of women's and men's programs. If the imbalance could have been maintained, many men's soccer programs, swimming programs, track programs, and wrestling programs that were cut would still exist. That's just a fact.

Now, I'm all for equality, but Title IX didn't work the way it was meant to work.

We agree on Title IX affecting a lot more, and adversely, than intended. But it is misunderstood on both sides. Yes, it necessitated adding women's sports for equality, but with that came an almost identical increase in budget since athletics then served double the population it had previously, and a larger percentage of the student body (since women weren't even admitted at a number of schools prior to Title IX - 18 women on a soccer team was a higher percentage of any college's female students than 18 men).

The vast majority of schools were able to comply for more than a decade, but when ADs pressed to find more money in the budget realized Title IX provided a convenient excuse to find that money through the elimination of high-cost, non-revenue men's sports, they jumped on it, and you can still see schools making that move today, as absurd as it is.

It is naive to think those sports would still be around were it not for Title IX. Recruiting and facility costs have gone through the roof since the 80s as schools continue to one-up each other. The cost of maintaining even a losing FBS football program have skyrocketed since just 10 years ago, let alone 20 or 30. If you have anything to blame for men's soccer being discontinued at WKU, over which I truly empathize, it is big-time college sports, and specifically, football.

I'm no fan of Title IX for the reasons we've both mentioned, but I felt the way you and many others did before learning this lesson myself. Title IX has its problems ad has been misapplied by many, but it itself is not to blame for the cutting of men's sports.

Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful response. We seem to agree on most points.

The situation at WKU was even more unique: While I was there, many of the aforementioned Sun Belt schools left for Conference USA. Few of the schools that replaced them had soccer programs. Our program was then forced to join the Missouri Valley Conference in soccer - making us the only program in the school to play in a conference other than the Sun Belt. So, the primary justification for dropping the program centered on aligning all of the programs in the same conference, not money (if we want to believe that).

Anyway, long story longer: if, in my desire to explain why the program no longer exists, I used a simple and convenient - albeit only partially true - explanation/scapegoat, I apologize. I just didn't want to have to write a 1000 words about something that wasnt even the main point of my response to Kuntheman.

I do appreciate the additional insight and point of view, though. Cheers.

Not even winning the UEFA Cup against Arsenal (2000) was better than walking over Manchester United in 1993 to claim Champions League spot. From where I was in the stands, I must have barely seen 10 minutes of the action from the smoke, but did manage to get a glimpse of the great Cantona shown the red card (unfairly) at the end. Triumph.

For club, I suppose it has to be either my firt game in OT, United 6 - 0 Newcastle or the Cl final in 2008. For country, and overall, it's undoubtedly Robbie Brady's winner against Italy last year. I was at the game and it was absolutely unbelievable. Unfortunately I don't have a local club but do go to LOI games. No outstanding memories there really other than Shamrock Rovers European run.

I've supported Utd since 1983! My earliest best memory was winning the Cup in 1985, the Whiteside final. Coming from a family of Northern Irish decent with a scattering of Utd and Liverpool fans amongst it, I remember it well. Classic winning goal from one of our own!

The first Premier league title of 92/93 also sticks out as we did nine home games that season and were there for the late comeback Steve Bruce headers vs Sheff Wed in the run-in. Just an amazing, truly iconic match with Fergie and Kidd jumping about on the touchline. It was my favourite football experience without a doubt. The season that kick started it all off after 26 years title-less.

I don't get to go as much now with work and kids but still try and do a couple of games a season. Last home game was City in April 2015 but I've managed Chelsea and Saints away in the last couple of years.

Locally I watch AFC Totton in the Southern League. Have watched them since 2004 now and made the trip to Wembley ten years ago to see them in the FA Vase final which we lost to Truro.

I guess I just love watching a live game and at only £9 on the gate it's easy!

Spring night in 1976. Reading v Tranmere - top of the table clash in the old Division 4. We (Reading) trounced them 5-0 with the late, great Robin Friday grabbing a brace and scoring what was described by well-known referee Clive Thomas as the greatest goal he had ever seen. Unfortunately no cameras were there. I will leave it to Paolo Hewitt to describe.

"Friday is about 35 yards from the Rovers goal when the ball hurtles towards him. Somehow he controls it on his chest and then hits the ball with his right foot. Before turning. The velocity of the ball is so powerful that within two seconds it is nestling in the top right-hand corner of the Rovers net.

For a few seconds there is absolute silence in the stadium as everyone – players, staff and fans – tries to understand what has just happened."

I love the image about half way down this link - a cut out from the local paper - it's the reaction of Thomas after the goal went in and two Tranmere defenders standing still, shellshocked. Fantastic stuff.

I'm from Greece and not really sure how I started liking Newcastle. I remember I had FIFA 97 for GameBoy and a Newcastle player (later found out it was Ginola) was on its cover. Then, Shearer made me like them even more. A few years later, January 4th 2012, I was watching Newcastle-Man Utd on TV. When Jones did that mistake and we afterall won 3-0, I immediately booked a flight and ticket for Newcastle-Sunderland in March.
Most people here support the big teams, so I feel like a differential (fpl vocabulary influence).
Last season was my first on FPL, I missed not being able to have any Newcastle players, but it feels great to finally play them in 2017/18.
I may be biased and not have the clearest judgement on picking my FPL team, but oh well, it's all about having fun.

Everton and United were almost unknown words in Greece back then.. If you ask now everybody supports Man Utd.

Yeah he's the reason why I'm heading to Newcastle for my bench players and cheap mids or forward.

I trust them more than other newly promoted teams. I'm just hoping the prices are reasonable.

      How 'bout dis - http://i.imgur.com/PvpAf8A.jpg

As for the post on the top of this page, Ip layed for the local club since I was small. 7 a side then 11. I still play 5-a-side/sixes but anyways, in fitting with the question and a funny memory... My dad kitted out my bedroom when i was about 6 with Liverpool curtains, bed sheets, wallpaper, you name it, and then I turned around and said I like Man united. I think his heart broke a little bit that day. I also remember being in the pub as a nipper with some crisps watching Eric Cantona score that goal against Liverpool!

Don't support anyone these days really, but I used to go to some Irish matches in Lansdowne road, and saw some cracking games in Old Trafford and Andield over the years.

I also kicked a hole in my wall as a teenager when I couldn't save a Viera goal from the half way line in ISS pro 1998... The memory card was full. Rage.

Does Iheanacho to Leicester sound good in FPL terms? I am not sure it does but they will play 442 still probably so he won't miss game time to Vardy. Still, I am not convinced. I would have preferred him to go to WHU.

    1. scootadee
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Yeah WHU would have been better. I'd say they play 4-4-2 though so he would still be a good pick.

    2. Netley Lucas
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Hmmm, super-sub v starter when Vardy is the man. Did you see him @LEI in that drubbing? I have bad memories of him, there is a reason he's gone and ffs just wait.

      1. The Big Fella
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

I did but even Aguero looked lost and low on confidence during Pep's first season. He is still a great player. He just needs regular football. I think he would have been much better at WHU.

    3. ScotDougie
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Think he'd have been a better fit at West Ham , think him and Vardy may work in a 4-4-2 maybe one drifting wide a bit more to split the defence and create space . Teams are onto Leicester the defo need a variation on style two pacey forwards could be devastating if the get it right

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

I like him but he's not going to get enough game time. Generally, I'd say strikers in the 6-7m bracket are a liability. An effective 3rd striker needs to be minimum 7.5m; otherwise you're better off getting a non-playing 4.5m and spend the money elsewhere.

        1. The Big Fella
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

Why don't you think so? Leicester play with 2 strikers anyway so he could easily be up front with Vardy

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

Well has he had a chat with Slimani and Musa? Ulloa and Okazaki? None of them were nailed or worth getting last season. That 2nd forward post at Leicester seems to be a curse since Vardy steals all the thunder.

            1. The Big Fella
              • 7 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

Ulloa is gash and the others have hardly made an impact since arriving. They haven't spent 25m for him to sit on the bench.

Didn't they spend big on Musa and Slimani? The Leicester second striker phenomenon is a big wait-and-see for me.

Reports that Marko Arnautovic made a transfer request. What does this mean for Stoke players as FPL prospects and Stoke in general?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

He feels they're not showing enough ambition. They signed Darren Fletcher ffs!

But seriously, I think he's right - Stoke are heading for a dismal season imo. I'm not going near them.

      1. Foozeball
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

If Arnautovic leaves, that could prompt the likes of Shaqiri to desire a move too

It could also possibly open up room for Shaqiri to shine as Stoke's star player, but at the moment he is inconsistent and seems to be injury prone

Their opening schedule looks pretty horrible tbh. I'm interested in Butland if he's priced at 4.5m but that's about it.

He will be 4.5. He'll be busy, potentially this season's Pickford. He's the only one from the squad that might be viable (and Crouchie as a 4.5m 3rd striker, possibly)

People are genuinely discussing failures and great players clearly past their prime. There are players in their early 20's kicking-on to such an extent FPL cannot/will not price them correctly.

Why do you think that is?

They stalk around here for prices, figured they'd finally give us the famed 4 am...

Why do you think they have priced Alli at 9.5? Be honest...

i think they are lowering the mifeild heavy hitters due to more expensive forwards upfront

you cant own 2 or 4 of lukaku jesus kane lacazzete if midfeilds are too expensive. just balancing it out imo

9,5 is not that cheap, and they will have to go the same with Eriksen. If you had those Two at 10 then you have to do the same with Mane etc and before you know it there a big gap between them and the rest.

Compensate for the higher prices. Crazy Salah is 9.0 but Alli is 9.5

Partly to tempt some people away from Kane. I'm expecting to see a lot of prime midfielders priced 9.5-9m to encourage more diversity and tempt people away from the lazy 343 template. I'd like to see defenders more generously priced too so that people will be encouraged to look at 4 or even 5 at the back. All formations ought to be equally viable..

If Alli had been 10m, the majority would have ignored him and gone for Kane regardless of the striker's price. By giving Alli a 9.5 tag, people will be more persuaded to pick a Spurs mid rather than Kane should he be 13m or more.

Lets say Kane is Priced 13m. In this Scenario Which trio would you prefer ? (both costs the same)

    A) Kane Knockaert 4.5 def

    B) Lacazette Pogba McAuley

    1. Andy_Social

B, but given your name I'm sure you won't do that!

dont know mate . i said to myself at the end of last season that kane will be first name on my teamsheet

starting to doubt that now though

I wouldn't necessarily divert from that path. You'll need to be more modest in your 2nd striker purchase and generally put more thought into your other 14 players. I'm certainly not ruling Kane out.

Depends on who else you have. I lean to A because Kane is so captainable. I won't be comfortable putting the armband on Lacazette for a few weeks, at least.

if we go without him in first gw and he fires have to take hits to get him in

but if we have kane we can downgrade him to someone like lacazette/jesus easily

If the game opens before Walker goes, will Trippier still be a 4.5-5m defender?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I doubt it. He'll be 5.5-6m whilst Walker will be 6.5

      If he's 4.5 he'll get 90% ownership!

If Walker goes, 5.5 will be good too. I am still hoping for the (unlikely) 4.5 though 😉

he'd be 5.5 minimum imo. . toby and verte likely to come at 6m

Trippier was 5.0 last season, so he'll probably be that again, with a slight possibility of being bumped up to 5.5 (doubt it though)

Given Hudderfield's kind early fixtures, would you consider the likes of Scott Malone or Tommy Smith as budget defenders? Although they are defenders with (probably) low clean sheet potential, they do have good offensive statistics with 6 goals/4 assists and 4 goals/10 assists respectively in the past season

only if they come at 4.5m.. anything above and i'll look elsewhere

Its just a number which everyone gets. Its part of your team page URL and is needed when identifying your side over the 3 million others.

    Howdy folks..

I dont really post much (ever) but have been looking at the fixtures for 17-18 and I'm curious why Everton - Arsenal GW9 is listed as TBD..??

Will this match still be played GW9 and they just need to find a date due to venue conflict or what is the situation there?

    Thanks in advance!

They're amazing. Very diverse, some heavy classic-arena style rock, part punk rock, but also melodic ballads and acoustic folksy ballads. There are tons of amazing live concerts on YouTube, probably the best way to check em out. Bston Orpheum Theater 1994 is incredible, but obviously they are much older now. Try Chicago Wrigley Field 2016 also.

Ok so it's Arsenal's Europa fixtures causing a pile-up. Im going to assume all those matches will stay in their original GameWeeks then. Thanks Rawk!
