Scout Report – Alvaro Morata

Chelsea finally ended their search for a new frontman by acquiring Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £58m, which could rise to £70m.

After months of speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United, the 24-year-old instead becomes the Blues’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrival of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Manager Antonio Conte was quick with the plaudits:

“I think for sure he is good signing for us. Morata is a young player who has a lot of experience. He has played with Real Madrid and Juventus and has a lot of experience for the league and also in the Champions League. Morata for sure is a first-choice [for team selection], a good striker and a player with the right prospects for Chelsea. He is very young, for sure he can improve a lot and I hope to show his value with us.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Morata was handed his senior debut by Jose Mourinho back in December 2010. That was to be his only league appearance of that season, as he dropped back to the reserves to continue his development.

The forward played a further 36 times over the following three La Liga campaigns, scoring 10 goals, but left to join Juventus in the summer of 2014 after failing to cement a regular role.

Ironically, he was signed for the club by long-term admirer Conte, who then promptly left to manage the Italian national side.

Morata went on to produce 15 goals and 12 assists over his two years in Turin, but once again struggled to cement a spot in the first XI, with 36 of his 63 league appearances off the bench.

Real triggered a buy-back clause in his contract last summer as the striker returned to Madrid in a deal worth 30m Euros. He finished the league season as their second-top scorer, netting 15 times and supplying three assists, but he started on just 14 occasions under Zinedine Zidane, with 12 further outings as a substitute.

On the international stage, Morata has turned out for Spain at every level from U17 upwards, producing 29 goals in 34 appearances. He has notched nine times in 20 outings for the senior side, with his last goal arriving against Colombia in early June.

The Prospects

Having informed Diego Costa that he was no longer part of his plans for 2017/18, Conte looked odds-on to acquire Romelu Lukaku for the Blues’ lone striker role last month.

But the Belgian’s decision to reunite with Mourinho left Chelsea desperate for extra firepower.

Standing six foot two, the physical Morata looks tailor-made as a lone striker for Conte’s tactical approach. Strong in possession and with an ability to hold up the ball and bring team-mates into play, he’s solid in the air – six of his 15 league goals came via headers in 2016/17.

Delving further into last season’s data, Morata fares well when compared with Costa. He was superior for minutes per shot (24.3 to 27.8) and, crucially, also boasted a far better conversion rate, netting 27.2% of his efforts to Costa’s 18%.

In his two seasons with Juventus, Morata was a little less prolific, netting 15.6% and 14.5% of his opportunities.

In spite of his limited pitch-time last term, the new arrival’s average of 88.9 minutes per league goal was far superior to Costa’s 154.5 and bettered only by Harry Kane (87.3) among FPL forwards.

He was also far more dominant in the air, winning 46.9% of headers compared to Costa’s 28.1%. In terms of creativity, Costa had the edge by an average of 73.5 minutes to the new boy’s 78.4.

Morata also affords the Blues a greater mobility up top for Conte’s second season at the helm. The Chelsea manager continues to remain unconvinced by Michy Batshuayi, who once again looks poised to remain a back-up option after being handed a single league start in 2016/17.

Likely to come in around 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League, Morata’s arrival adds yet another premium-priced striker to the mix as the competition for our three-man frontlines intensifies.

But given that Eden Hazard is priced at 10.5 and could also retain spot-kick duties, the Belgian may well remain our go-to option in the Blues’ attack once he’s recovered from an ankle injury around September.

That could be a key factor when comparing Morata with Kane, Lukaku, Lacazette and maybe Jesus – all four of those strikers are expected to be designated penalty-takers in 2017/18. It was a factor that tainted our view of Costa at times and this could also apply to his successor.

Initially, Hazard’s absence allows the likes of Willian and Pedro – at 7.0 and 8.0 respectively – to battle it out for our attentions as a relatively cheap route into Chelsea’s attack for the first few matches. It could also see Morata handed spot-kick duties which, we can hope, he might retain.

Certainly, there’s no doubt that Morata has the potential to make his mark in the Premier League.

Yet with so many alternatives for our Fantasy attacks, and with Hazard’s return another big factor, it remains to be seen whether many will be prepared to take the plunge as Conte’s troops prepare for a testing opening run involving clashes against Spurs, Everton and Arsenal in the first five Gameweeks.

What is your squad looking like? Particularly interested in your strategy:

      1) Are you planning for an early wildcard so have chosen a team for the first 3-6 GWs?
      2) What formation have you chosen and do you belive in defensive rotation?
      3) Are you planning on doing transfers early to get price rises?

      1. Individual

        Hey mate
Not 100% decided anything, but am beginning to look at 4-4-2
        Atm it's
        Foster / Eliot
Valencia Trippier Dawson Bertie / 4.0
Willian Sane KdB Ince / Carroll
        Kaku Kane / JAyew

Answers: 1) I tend to use my early WC within the first few weeks, and looking at it there's a clear turn in the fixtures come gw5. I'm therefore currently planning for it on gw5.
        2) whatever formation I choose, I don't believe in rotation. I think it's something you think about when you have the time to but as the weeks go on you forget. I also want max value on the pitch and a bare minimum bench, as you can see. This would also apply to a 3-4-3, which would have a premium/5.5/5.0/4.5(b)/4.0 set up. Not decided on formations yet, but liking the expensive Defs over mid range mids as there's little quality in the latter band.
        3) I try to think my squad is good for 2 weeks (I use FFS' RMT for any planning quite heavily actually) but I will see what the craic is. I might be sceptical of a Capoue type with unsustainable stats but equally might swallow my pride to gain TV. Judging by last two seasons, think you need about 105TV for a good late wildcard (so 102.5 sv) and will be aiming for that again. But equally going to try not to get swept along by herd mentality in the meta too much... Talking about it verbally in pod weekly will Def help curtail some madness.. jusy gotta hope I haven't done my changes already at that point 😆

        Cheers !

Thanks for the response. Struggling with Kane. He really needs to haul consistently to be worth 12.5m IMO - pushing 250+ pts over a full season. Otherwise he could be another Aguero.

I am keen on the early GW5 / GW6 WC because of the fixtures and because prices are most volatile early in the season when there are more active players.

Think your squad looks good, although prefer Ritchie (if fit for GW1) to Ince because of his set piece threat. Also wary of the double-up on WBA. But I also believe that if you are going to gamble the first few GWs is the time to do it because you can make transfers and jump on bandwagons / get the price rises easily.

Yep I like Ritchie too to be honest, Ince's spot as the 6.0 punt highly uncertain. Also got Chadli and Phillips in the mix, but surely a wba triple up is madness

With Kane, as said on pod 3 I can't see past him. Ridiculous output year after year and he's fully rested after finally having a summer off. Easier to downgrade from him than upgrade to him imho 🙂

I have spent quit a bit in defence for two reasons. My best season I had 2x premium defs from day 1, and looking at an in-depth article from last season (sorry cant find the link) it mentioned that the best FPL players all had defenders who achieved +5.5 ppg minimum or something like that, and the only ones who can do this tend to be goalscoring defenders from the top teams (except for people like McAuley/Daniels etc.)

For what it's worth, I've gone Alonso, Kolasinac, Ake as my 3 for every week.

Nope. The one against Leicester looked a one off (that Yaya gave to him), pretty sure it was explained too in some presser.

Kun took the last pen with both him and Jesus on the pitch fwiw. Yaya is first in line but he'll get less gametime this year.

I'd consider going Laca down to someone like Benteke and upgrading RLC to Zaha. RLC too risky to be starting on field early on and having Benteke + Zaha will maximise points during their easy early run.

I'm probably quite alone in this but I don't see the point in the Lukaku-Kane double up. Who are you going to captain? The other one you will always hope semi-fails, it's just damage limitiation. "A goal and no bonus". I prefer to have one clear choise and just hope the other one fails, conpletely xD

That said I'm currently on Kun-Lacazette-Firmino so I'm quite obviously biased.

So would you be thinkinh if never captaining Kane, just get Alli and/or Eriksen from Spurs?

Yup I feel any game you would captain Kane, you can captain Alli.

Without a shadow of a doubt!

Got Trippier, Eriksen and Alli though so fairly likely that any goal Kane scores one of them will assist.

Might still end up with Kane though, just not a fan of the Kaku-Kane because of the captaincy dilema.

I kind of agree with you, here, actually.

If you captain Kane you sort of lose out on the true value of having Lukaku because his points aren't doubled.

I understand wanting both, but it's a lot of money for a player you won't captain likely 50% of the time.

Assuming Lindelof was nailed on, which as of now I believe he is, is anyone tempted to go with a defence of Lindelof, Trippier and Cedric as well as 2 4m defenders?

In the first 7 weeks there's only Everton away for Spurs where I wouldn't want to play any of the 3 and I'm sure by then a 4m option will have materialized? Obviously you're taking a gamble on assured starts but looking at it closely I'd be only paying the extra 0.5 for security, I'd never want to play the 4.5.

That is a good call. I'd be worried about TV though... Good chance both 4.0's would be 3.9 or even 3.8 after 7 weeks? Would be a nightmare keeping an eye on prices

4.0 defenders don't tend to drop very quickly. And as soon as they hit 3.9 people tend to buy them for enabling purposes. I don't believe I've seen any hit 3.8 other than the ones who were early season bandwagons - and you don't have to worry about them dropping for a while.

This is potentially my strategy also. I always WC after 4-5 weeks anyway so may as well pick 3 defenders who WILL play and get 2 x 4.0m defs in to warm the bench.

The key with 4.0m defenders is to pick the ones with the least ownership, as they are least likely to drop. If there's one with a red flag - just pick him! 🙂

Cedric is a fragile lad though, and Spurs have to be in the market for an RB. As well as the amount of CB options United have (I do think he'll be first choice though). Maybe a tad risky, hopefully a £4.0m playing defender emerges.

    RMT

    Begovic (Elliott)

    Bertrand, Trippier, Cedric (Hünemeier, Mariappa)

De Bruyne, Pogba, Zaha, Phillips (Loftus-Cheek)

    Lukaku, Kane, Benteke

Looking to target those with friendly early fixtures before wildcarding either GW3 or GW4, hence the two Southampton defenders. Risky I know but they have the easiest run by far and could easily keep 5 clean sheets in the first 5 games.

Gone light on the bench as I'm looking to maximise points on field in the first few weeks before WC where I'll look to get better cover. Loftus-Cheek will be first EMG for any late outs with Hünemeier my defensive cover should one of the defenders not get named for whatever reason.

    Any advice would be sweet

Not sure that's true to be honest. I have a team that I think will score points. I'm only screwed if a Sanchez outscores everyone! Haha. I sat through long periods without Sanchez and Aguero before, whilst everyone else owns him, and often woulf have done worse if I made the move. 'Starting firing' just means that I missed out on previous goals. Maybe he won't fire for 2 or 3 weeks after he "started".

Actually Lacazette of Jesus, but you get the picture.

I don't have to take a risk on Kompany or Redmond, as in my previous team, but only taking a risk on the rotating 2nd mid spot, and on being supposedly inflexible.
