Moving Target – Kurt Zouma

With Crystal Palace appearing to have stolen a march on Stoke City in the race to sign Bruno Martins Indi, the Potters have bolstered their centre-back options by signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes revealed the Potters fought off interest from a number of clubs from across Europe to secure the services of Zouma, who is looking for regular first-team football following a serious knee injury:

“We have prioritised adding further strength in depth to defensive positions this summer, and we have certainly done that by fending off any number of clubs who were all interested in taking Kurt on loan… On his day he is one of the most impressive defenders in the league, and while injury unfortunately hampered his progress at Chelsea last season, we are certain that we can give him the platform to recapture the form he showed prior to his setback.”

The History

Zouma linked up with Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne at the age of 15  and made his professional debut in a cup match against Bordeaux in August 2011, aged 16.

He made 22 league appearances during the 2011/12 season, scoring twice, and was part of the side that lifted the Coupe de la Ligue in 2012/13.

In total, Zouma played 74 times for Saint-Etienne in all competitions, producing four goals and two assists.

In January 2014, Zouma joined Chelsea in a deal believed to be worth around £12 million, though he only linked up with the Blues ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

He made 15 league appearances during his first season at Stamford Bridge and was part of the squad that won the Premier League title.

It was during the following season that Zouma really established himself in the Chelsea side, starting 21 of the first 25 matches before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

That injury, along with the form of the Chelsea defence last season, meant Zouma has made just nine league appearances since.

Zouma represented France at all levels from U16s to U21s, before making his senior debut against Denmark in March 2015 – one of just two appearances he has made for the national team.

The Prospects

Zouma is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), so it’s unlikely the Frenchman will feature prominently in our seasons.

The 22-year-old does offer a set-piece threat – during the 2015/16 season he averaged a shot every 112.8 minutes.

But his goalscoring record, just seven goals in his career so far, doesn’t appear to justify the outlay, particularly bearing mind the Potters only kept 11 clean sheets last term.

Value can certainly be found elsewhere in the Stoke defence, though.

Glen Johnson, Phil Bardsley and Geoff Cameron are available at 4.5, while Jack Butland, Erik Pieters and Ryan Shawcross come in at 5.0.

Much will depend on what formation Hughes opts for.

The Potters’ boss generally favoured a four-man backline last term, but he did at times experiment with a three-man defence.

In a back four, Zouma and Shawcross look the favourites to start in central defence if Martins Indi doesn’t end up at the bet365 Stadium, with Cameron and perhaps Marc Muniesa options in a three-man backline.

Cameron is certainly an interesting prospect as he is also in the running to start in a defensive midfield role, although new signing Darren Fletcher is expected to be a starter in the middle of the park.

In terms of Zouma’s defensive numbers, he impressively won all eight of his tackles last season, and 81% during the 2015/16 campaign.

By comparison, Shawcross only won 75% of his tackles last time out.

Looking at Zouma’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 11.42 minutes in 2015/16, which was inferior to Shawcross (9.91) last term.

However, Zouma earned Baseline Bonus System Points (BPS) – that is BPS without goals, assists and clean sheets – at a rate of a point every 3.7 minutes. An outstanding return which easily bettered Shawcross (7.6 minutes).

Looking back a season, Zouma – who made 23 appearances for Chelsea – earned Baseline BPS every 6.5 minutes compared with Shawcross’ 7.2.

That would indicate that the new loanee will have a say when it comes to BPS and bonus points in a Stoke clean sheet scenario.

However, even that data does little to justify the extra spend on Zouma, with Butland and Shawcross, providing he shakes off a back problem, likely to offer stronger value.

Fantasy managers will hope pre-season provides some clues as to who will be the first-choice right-back between Johnson and Bardsley, although Mame Biram Diouf’s ability to operate at right wing-back is a worry should Hughes adopt a three-man defence.

There could also be some uncertainty on the opposite flank, with summer signing Josh Tymon set to put pressure on Pieters for the left-back berth.

In any case, Stoke’s opening fixtures (eve, ARS, wba, MUN, new, CHE) mean Potters assets are unlikely to be in demand.

Those early matches should provide us with the chance to assess how Stoke will line up this season, with investment likelier when Hughes’ men embark on a more favourable run from Gameweek 9 onwards.

As for Chelsea, new signing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen look to be the rotation options in central defence for Antonio Conte, with John Terry and Nathan Ake having departed this summer.

It has also been mooted that Conte could be open to changing to a four-man defence on occasion this season, something that will certainly need to be monitored.

But in terms of Stoke, the power and athleticism of Zouma should certainly complement the experience of Shawcross. And once the Chelsea loanee gets a run of matches under his belt, his presence could boost the appeal of the entire backline.

But until the schedule eases, and we see how the Potters line up, Fantasy managers are likely to take a watching brief before pinpointing the optimum route into the Stoke rearguard.

Fraser, Brady, Shelvey, Walters, Ward-Prowse, Bojan... Any of those is capable of doing well for the price if they are 1st choice for their clubs and there are a fair few at 5.0m too. Identifying the surefire starters is the tricky thing for GW1, after 4 or 6 weeks that should be clearer.

Walters could be a good pick.

There are some options in the Newcastle midfield, but need to see what Rafa's first choice is. If Siem De Jong nails the number 10 spot then I'll be tempted to punt on him.

Sandro is looking good as is Rooney.

Something more left field is Kieran Dowell. Started last 2 friendlies, scored a peach and is playing well. For some reason he's not been given a squad number as yet but if he did then it'd be 4 or 4.5m mid but hes playing wide right and linking Rooney Klassen and Sandro.

Callum Connolly seems to be Koemans pref to cover Baines too.

There's vast swathes of nailed 4.5 defenders across the game.

Dunk is one of the better choices. BHA a defensive team, conceded sod all in the Championship last year. Hughton is a defensive manager, he has good CBI stats, a bit of goal threat (he's tall), pretty good opening fixtures.

Sane maybe the 2nd most nailed City mid after KDB...I'm staying away personally

Please tell me your thoughts about this team:

    DeGea Maenpaa
    Dawson Daniels Cedric Lascelles Mee
    Eriksen Sane Zaha Ritchie Willian
    Lacazette Lukaku Gayle

Trying to cover defensively for early fixtures, I tried to split the cash around low-mid priced defenders.
From ManUtd, DeGea looks like the cheapest nailed option, others being Bailly and Lindelof.
For 2nd keeper I could go Elliot, but that would block the way of having 3 Newcastle players elsewhere, so Maenpaa is just a fodder.
Having DeGea, it'd be pointless to have Foster and not play him, so I feel Dawson is the obvious choice.
I'd like to have a Bournemouth def, so it's between Daniels and Ake.
Having DeGea as GK, in order to benefit from Soton's nice early fixtures, the cheapest nailed way leads to Cedric.
I want to believe in Lascelles being nailed and useful in Newcastle's attempt to take advantage of their kind early games.
Burnley will probably try to defend last season's reputation of good defensive displays at home, so Mee will be deployed then.
I want one of Eriksen and Alli, I choose Eriksen as I feel he can create and score equally well, also has set pieces.
I had Coutinho but being afraid of Klopp's expected rotation due to European duties in the very early GWs, I feel like getting Sane.
Zaha looks lively, must be nailed, and Palace have nice early fixtures.
Ritchie is on set pieces and I feel that if Newcastle do well in the beginning, he'll probably be involved.
Willian seems to be a very good way in Chelsea's early games while Hazard is not back yet and Pedro is more expensive.
Lacazette could do well and I try to keep my faith in him. If Kane was cheaper I'd get him instead. Jesus could be an alternative, but I'm afraid of Pep's rotation.
Lukaku is probably the first player on my teamsheet.
I'd like to have Defoe as 3rd forward, but I feel like the upgrades I can do in the team using that 1.5m are better, so I hope Gayle can do something.

The midfield, of course, is on the weak side, but overall it's a good team. The main issue I see is Chelsea double up. They have no Hazard, a new main striker and bad fixtures. Now, Willian is your 2nd "best" midfielder, and replacing him would probably make the midfield roo weak. That means Morata imo has to go (which kinda ruins your whole structure, sorry).

True. Willian has looked spry lately, though. Guess we'll have to see how Morata settles in. Che might hit the ground running as a team.

Zaha + Morata would only be an upgrade if Chelsea doesn't look like world beaters, though. And if they don't, chances are you can get more points for your £17 mid/forward combo (KDB/Alli + Austin?) (Salah + Defoe?)

If they score 2-3 a game you'd steal a march on the rest of us, though 😀

    Out of 10?

    Begovic Elliot
    Kompany/Kolasinac Trippier Lindelof Cedric Dunk
    Alli Sane Cout Willian Carroll
    Lukaku Morata Fletcher
    0.5itb

Morata can always become Jesus or Laca.

if playing 4 4 2 this is fine

my issue with not having 3 up front though is two fold

      a) all the big clubs have a top, top striker this year, I think you need three
      b) there are lots of 4.5m mids who will see lots of game time. there are no sub 5m forwards who will even get on the pitch, they are completely dead subs

I'm playing 442, but just think that there are some good premium defence options this year which have value such as Trippier, Lindelof, Kompany, which is why I went four at the back.
In terms of midfield I felt that there were much cheaper, but just as explosive options for the top 6 teams such as Alli instead of Kane and Sane instead of Jesus and Coutinho instead of Firmino. Also, Jesus will be playing on the wing most likely, and so will Sane so they have equal opportunities to score and Sane will get more points cos he's a mid and much cheaper.

I would play 4 3 3 and have two 4.5 midfielders who will play in reserve

          Willian to 4.5
          Fletcher to King

I'm a bit confused re the draft? What's the official url as the only one I can find seems unconnected to Fpl with different scoring systems?

Or have they changed their mind? What on earth is this playing against each other like in American Football lark? I thought you just picked your 15 players and points were same is in the main game?

    Thanks!

Do Foster to Elliot, get rid of yedlin and hunemieir, don't like Ramsey and Rodriguez is iffy,

Anyone concerned about doubling up at the beginning of the season?

I believe Spurs and Chelsea are by far the best attacking teams in the league, can score 4 against anyone. So I've gone for Kane, Alli, Morata and Willian, all of whom are either point beasts and/or incredible value.

Any issues in having two double ups?

Well, Spurs never start that well and also have the Wembley factor as well. In terms of just attacking I'd say Liverpool and City are ahead of Spurs and Chelsea, so you could make a case for doubling up on Pool and City. Therefore this argument isn't great.

Not sure about doubling up on those two teams to start. Would rather be diversified across most if not all top teams to begin the season. And if I had to double up, it would probably be Man U or Southampton given their initial fixtures.
