The Numbers Game – Southampton

Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Is Jrod nailed enough to be a starting striker in the game?

and although people complain that wba are a defensive side they scored more goals than Southampton and Six other sides, and with J Rod maybe they can better it

He is, but Austin and Chicharito are better bets at a similar price

KDB always delivers. Consistently. Aguero is capable of the biggest hauls in the game imo, alongside Sanchez. Having Aguero at the right times will be decisive.

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier – Cedric – Alonso
    Eriksen – Willian – KDB – RLC
    Lukaku – Kane – J-Rod

    Dunk, Rangal, Carroll

Uncertain about RLC and J-Rod, had to free up space to get KDB in though have feeling ill be sickened if dont have him in, any suggestions? Thanks

Just remember, every time you pick a 4.0 that you "don't intend to use", you are effectively subbing 4.0 out of your budget.

No, you're effectively increasing the amount you spent on your starting XI i.e. he players who give you points.

It's been shown that your 3rd sub almost never actually gets subbed on. Makes 0 difference if they are a starter or not.

Tried it last season. Had Evans third sub and he hauled. Was the worst feeling of the season, will avoid that possibility entirely with a 4.0 this year.

    1) Aguero to Jesus?
    2) Heaton to Myhill?
    3) Something else?

    Foster - Heaton
    Trippier - Yedlin - Bertrand - Kolasanic - Bailly

    Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

hi everyone, do you think it's worth going for Tammy Abraham or Dom Solanke as a backup striker?

And what are you opinions about bringing in Izzy Brown or Kasey Palmer as potential regular creative talents?

Is Nathan Redmond worth a punt?

    Current Squad:

    Pickford (Hart)

van Dijk Mee Daniels (Tuanzebe Rangel)
    Alli Zaha Sigurdsson Sterling (Wanyama)
    Lukaku Kane (Abraham)

    Any thoughts very much appreciated

I wouldn't bother. Neither are likely to play regularly, so you might aswell bring in bench fodder and put 0.5 somewhere else.

A 5.0 striker might emerge, but I'd go for the Brighton lad or Ayew from Swansea. Nobody else stands out at the moment

I'd bet on him staying to be honest. He's away next season 100%

Looks like he'll be staying for this season. Better they get another season out of him, get back into the CL and prepare a replacement than lose him now. His worth for one season on the pitch and the knock on results far outweigh 50 million in Arsenal's current situation.

I came up with one more idea:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Baiily Trippler Monreal Cedric (Rangel)
    KDB Salah Willian (Carroll, RLC)
    Kane Kali Austin

    Thoughts ?

    lindelof/cedric/trippier/alonso
    sane/alli/willian/loftus-cheek

Not sure either to go with

      My guess...
      Danilo Kompany Stones Walker
      Fernandinho
      De Bruyne Silva
      Jesus Aguero Sane

What a stupid question, no one really knows.

I'd guess he'll try 3 centre halves with wingbacks

    i have a draft question,

we are running our draft on saturday night, would you all need laptops or phones to complete it efficiently?

or does the admin have the power to allocate players to individuals teams as they are picked??

    thanks for anyone who responds!

You will all require access individually to the draft site. Admin gets no other rights beside setting up league.

Also recommended to have a laptop. It's painful on the phone.

    A) Struggling to get KDB and Alli in my team. Both essential?

Would probably play a 4-3-3 if I decide to add KDB in for sane and add a 5m defender.

    B) Any 5m defender Recomendations?

Don't think both are essential depending on strikers.
      1 of Kane or Alli
      2 of Aguero or KDB
