The Numbers Game – West Bromwich Albion

Our summer series of members’ articles – offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of 2016/17 – continues with West Bromwich Albion.

To begin with, we’ll look at the performance levels over the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

In addition, we’ll check in on the Baggies’ threat from set-pieces, in particular, with their reliance on dead-ball situations remaining pivotal to their prospects.

West Brom certainly upped their attacking output in the previous season.

Pulis’ side netted a mere 34 goals – the second-worst record in the top-flight – on their way to finishing in fourteenth spot in 2015/6. Yet last term, they found the net on 43 occasions to claim tenth position.

Rondon played almost 4 times as many minutes as Jrod but only scored 3 goals more. When he's played he's done well and finished the season strongly.

I hope so as i I have him currently. Played plenty of preseason, scored a couple of goals, seems to be over his injuries.

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Daniels, Cedric, Mee, Lowe
    KDB, Salah, Zaha, Carroll, RLC
    Kane, Lukaku, JRod

    0.5 itb

Should i get Forster because of WBA's poor pre season?

Should i upgrade JRod? If yes then by downgrading Kane to Aguero or Alonso to 6.o def?

Salah or Mane? Or neither and double up on Spurs?

I've ended up paying it every year; initially to support Mark and the site, and more recently, for the Opta stats.

      I'd prefer it to be £10 a year, but I don't mind £12.50.

This. My initial memberships were to support the site rather than it support me. It's rare I dabble into the members area when I do have membership, prefer the articles when they come out then I might go and explore a bit further. Also Jonty talking it up on the scoutcast makes me dabble more.

The heatmap stuff looks good though.

I may be asking for a ban, but here's my honest answer:

I used to buy the membership for several seasons in a row, because it saved me a lot of time to get the data readily arranged with their tools, instead of messing with it myself which takes my time.

This changed last season. FFS itself gives a lot of Opta stats away for free, you even get some of the more important information straight from the FPL site now, which diminishes the value of the membership. More importantly, FFS destroyed the one most important tool they provide, namely the Season Ticker. I ended up not using it much at all last season, because it was so completely frustrating. This was a major setback for me and reduced my use of the member area to close to nothing.

Since I can get most of the opta data elsewhere easily, I no longer see it worth it to pay for membership. Particularly as the site now has bigger sources of money and no longer depends on the members for its revenue.

I see where you're coming from. I'm wary of the stats being outsourced elsewhere so look for evidence of this before renewing. However, Mark and the team are creating quite valuable tools to work with the data; the comparison tool and average position maps are awesome.

The season ticker doesn't affect me too much as I like to create my own in a spreadsheet.

It's exactly about that: do they provide either exceptional data, or more likely tools that put that data in useful packages. For me this was no longer sufficiently the case the last season.

It isn't just about the OPTA data, for me, running a site like this isn't free and the £12.50 with the community and stats available is bloody well cheap!

Im seeing Redmond in alot less teams now than the initial first weeks.

Great fixtures and will be highly invloved in the attack.

Agree with the comment from Stock below, but also have him in my squad as I want Sou mid, but don't like Tadic stats either. Is JWP nailed do you know? If he was, I'd switch in a heartbeat and also use the funds elsewhere . . .

Then again, there's also Austin up front who I'll be monitoring closely.

I only have one reliable captain pick (for the first 2 weeks) and have spread the funds about elsewhere. I think that could be the way to go over loading up on all the big hitters with 5-6.5m mids and forwards.

Will JWP and Firmino have more score potential than Daniels and Salah ?
    Cheers !

Three rotation or potential none starters there imo. Fraser, Danilo and Willian. If you're happy to take the risk then yes you're good to go 🙂

If I had to change something it would be to put some saints and some Man U in defence and or goal

GW1 Team, hoping to save my Wildcard aslong as possible, until it's needed. Hoping to not make a Transfer in GW1 & do a double Transfer in GW2: Willian to Ritchie & upgrade either TAA or the 4m DF.

    De Gea

    Dann Yoshida TAA

De Bruyne Salah Willian Zaha Fraser

    Lukaku Aguero

    Subs: Elliott, Mee, 4m, Mounie

    Pick one:

    A) Bertrand Salah
    B) Cedric Alli/Eriksen

    Have Kane and Firmino

B w/ Erik - is Cedric available gw1 though? No point in starting the race with a non-runner.
