Southampton – Best Three Options

Southampton enter the new season with a new manager, Mauricio Pellegrino, having sacked Frenchman Claude Puel after just a year at the club.

After managing just two more goals than relegated Sunderland last season, Pellegrino has been briefed with improving Southampton’s goal threat and seeing them challenge for a European place once again.

The fixture list has been kind to the new boss.

In their first five game weeks (SWA, WHU, hudd, WAT, cpl) Southampton do not face a side that finished in the top half of the Premier League table last season, representing the perfect opportunity for a flying start to the new campaign.

With such fantastic fixtures and the shackles off their attackers, Southampton players are set to be popular options. Here I look at three of the south coast side’s best options.

RYAN BERTRAND

Despite being the most expensive of the Southampton defenders, left-back Ryan Bertrand looks to be the safest pick.

Portuguese right back Cedric has lacked minutes during pre season and new singing Jan Bednarek provides competition to the current favoured centre-back partnership of Maya Yoshida andJack Stephens. Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk waits on the sidelines having handed in a transfer request.

At Pellegrino’s previous club – Deportivo Alaves –  his fullbacks had the licence to get forward and join the attack, which adds to the appeal of  Bertrand,  who managed five assists in the previous campaign.

With the possibility of high attacking returns from the Saints fullbacks this season, the English international could offer excellent value at just £5.5m.

MANOLO GABBIADINI

Throughout the whole of pre-season one of the main topics of Southampton conversation was whether Charlie Austin or Manolo Gabbiadini would start Gameweek 1.

The Englishman managed two goals in pre season and the Italian managed the same tally plus an assist. But with the former benched in Southampton’s final friendly it looks like Gabbiadini may have the edge.

Despite letting many down with a lacklustre display at the end of last season, we all know what the former Napoli man is capable of, after his emphatic entrance to the league last February.  The £7.0m Italian could prove excellent value if he nails his spot in the starting 11 and on the evidence of pre-seasonite looks likely he will be Southampton’s chief weapon in attack.

JAMES WARD-PROWSE

Priced at just £5.5m, the England U21 could be a great differential ahead of the upcoming season. A 4-2-3-1 formation seems to be Pellegrino’s preferred set up and Ward-Prowse currently the preferred option in an advanced midfield role.

Pre-season has also hinted that the youngster is currently on corner duty but there is still some confusion demanding free kicks with both Ward-Prowse and Gabbiadni sharing them during pre season. Despite getting only one goal and an assist in pre-season, the England U21 captain looks to have a big season ahead of him and could prove to be a bargain.

There is a caveat though, with Southampton bringing in Mario Lemina from Juventus. It remains to be seen whether the Gabon international will threaten his place or be utilised in a more central midfield role.

Thanks for this. I've got Gabbiadini currenlty - having not been burnt by his poor show at the tail end of last season.

Would love Bertrand - but think I may just get similar returns for less in Stephens.

Lemina for me presents a risk to JWP....so want to see how they set up before I go down that route.

Disagree on a couple points here.

I think Bertrand is an absolute must if you are considering Southampton defense.

At 5.5 JWP is still worth the risk, as I can't see Lemina going straight into the team for the weekend. And there are a few midfielders at that price point that he can be swapped with. This all depends on wether he will be your 3rd 4th or 5th mid of course...

Team should be set up beyond gwk 1 - no point getting JWP if he becomes rotation fodder once again from gwk 2-3.

I agree Bertrand is the best. But costs more than the others. That's the issue - not his excellent.

I also had Gabbi, but was tempted by the appeal of Firmino for just 1.5 more. It's looking fairly likely he's going on pens, and cheapest route into the Liverpool attack? Thoughts?

Agree. I think Mane and Salah will outscore him, but there are other great options in mid. Alli/Eriksen/KDB and Hazard/Sanchez when they hit their stride.

There is not one striker from the other top six that is in this price bracket and assured of starts.

At the time of writing this Lemina to Southampton wasn't on - so JWP really appealed to me. Removed him from my team now as I believe Lemina could be a threat to his gametime.

Many Southampton fans think similar. Pelligrino is keen on 8s playing as 10s.....which puts Lemina firmly in competition with JWP.

Lemima seems to be someone who can play anywhere. I would be surprised if he usurps JWP though.

      Hi Jonty,

I'm sure you manage (just!) to rise above picking players for emotional reasons. So you can see the facts, he DID burn people badly. Do you think Gabby's awful showing was an aberration? Or just high risk/high reward?

Personally i'm never happy investing in a striker when Charlie Austin is watching on. You know the story, 0-0 in the 78th minute, Austin comes on, heads in from first corner. Next week you're looking at Gabby and it's brown trouser time

        Lol for the conclusion

Yeah, thats possible. But Austin starting in GW2 wouldnt necessarily mean Gabbi wouldn't start either - they played together in preseason

quite - we just don't really know what's going to happen, and Gabbi could easily have his minutes cut

Gabby 7.0 to Austin 6.5 is easy

Austin to Gabby - is another story.

I'm not suggesting Austin is a better option. Manolo has a recent career record of ~ 1 in 3, and ~ 1 in 3 is what we saw last season. But his league goals all came against teams who were really defensively in the depths of despair, Sunderland, Watford and West Ham. The counter to this is 2 EFL goals against United. This is a tiny sample and i'm unconvinced and suspect his career will follow previous and he will score some goals and burn people again with successive blanks. Let's see which comes first

I'm starting with B & C for what it's worth. Banking on Man City starting well and then assessing my front 3.

KDB is a top player, but for me, in FPL terms, I'd rather have a Liverpool or Spurs midfielder for a similar cost.

I don't think Bednarek will play at all. Yoshida is also a safe pick. I was going to go with Cedric but he had an extended vacation, though he started against Sevilla in their last game.

Currently I have Yoshida in my team. But I am also contemplating if it is worth having two Southampton defenders with this set of fixtures.

With the go-to £5.5 option Trippier out injured, and other good £5.5 options (except Monreal ) either short term/rotation risk (Danilo/Bavies or too expensive (PVA), I think Bertrand + Yoshida is an option to be considered

But why are these the best three options? Unless you're only considering GW1 then surely Cedric has to be a serious consideration against Bertrand, and even now he looks to be ready. What about Forster - he outscored Bertrand last year and is .5 cheaper. And when has James Ward Prowse ever been a decent option for anywhere but the bench or a fire and forget.
And as a player with as many question marks over his head as goals, i'd hesitate to select Gabby as a best option - Austin is a predator and when times get tough he will fight his way to the top, immobile as he is.

I would argue that long term the best three options are Forster, Cedric and Bertrand because the rest is really unclear

    Nice job Chief.!

Would of liked a little more info on other players in the team though and more reasoning why you chose those three over them.

I really won't bring myself to own any Soton players this season as their consistent Supermarket Sweep of selling their best players over the years grinds on me. I don't think the ownership of that club give a rats about the fans or Southampton either.Just a Corporate Gluttony enterprise.

Think they have been getting worse as a team with no soul and they are plating like it. Se them somewhere in the bottom 6 this year with more uninspiring dross.

Thanks for the article, but this does seem to be based off of personal preference.

I 100% agree with Bertie in defence, he's the best Southampton asset, but after that, you really can't guarantee a case for anyone.

Gabbiadini and Austin could theoretically rotate dependant on opponents, or on form, whilst I don't see JWP featuring much in midfield, maybe as a wide player. Not guaranteed to start at all...

My back line is Bailly, Alonso, Kolasinic (Suttner / Francis rotating).

Is Cedric really a risk for GW1 after playing the last friendly? Bertrand is a no-brainer for me, and I'm trying desperately to talk myself out of a Gabbiadini third striker. Redmond conspicuous by his absence here too - worth a punt for the first 5 GW at £6.5m?

Lots of transfer speculation concerning Danny Rose>Chelsea/Man United.

As much as i would like to see Rose at United it would spell the end of that great Spurs side as they would be embarking on the slippery slope of selling all their best players.

If Rose happens to sign for Chelsea it is curtains for Alonso.
