The Technical Area – Pogba and Mkhitaryan

Successive 4-0 routs of West Ham United and Swansea City suggests the spirit of attacking football looks to have finally returned to Old Trafford.

Bolstered by the summer acquisitions of Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United’s attacking output has generated a huge amount of buzz within Fantasy circles.

Having written in the pre-season that the Red Devils were my top pick to improve their goalscoring numbers in 2017/18 (after underperforming their projected output by over 10 goals last term), my own projection system was bullish on their potential to produce early returns.

Yet even I didn’t expect the goals to flow so freely over the opening weeks. With the fixtures continuing to align in their favour (at least over the next five Gameweeks), the case for us to increase our investment in United’s attack is strong. Indeed, though many managers have coverage already in the form of Romelu Lukaku – FPL’s most selected player with 55% ownership – the prospect of doubling up is a significant temptation.

This week’s Technical Area will be digging into the performances of two in-vogue midfield assets – Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – in an attempt to tease out the optimal Fantasy prospect.

Two Gameweeks in, Pogba and Mkhitaryan currently occupy first and second place respectively for FPL midfielders.

Pogba followed up an eight-point opener with an explosive 15-point performance in Gameweek 2, while Mkhitaryan has returned 10 and 11 points in impressively consistent fashion. Yet despite the similarity of their totals, the manner in which the pair have produced their points has been very different.

In fairness the conclusion makes sense. Pick Pogba for goals, pick Mkhitaryan for assists.

We've seen that Pogba scores if they score a few. Will he be the man to get the goal in a 1:0? Probably not. Mkhitaryan is more likely to be the man that provides the assist to break a tight game as he is the creative ACM.

Bottomed - Everyone talking about Hazard and Sanchez coming back into the picture post the International Break, but Coutinho walking back into the picture interests me the most - 8.8 mil(likely) for him would be too good to turn up my nose at. Just worth a mention I thought

Even if he's still there it's a very crowded midfield and he'll struggle to repeat last year's performances.

Even more so if Sturridge can stay fit. Only so many attacking points to go round between a lot of players there.

I don't think so; Klopp knows his best team and will look to utilise it to the full. Coutinho would thrive with so much movement in front of him creating space

Please help me solve this dilemma..

So i have this squad with 0 itb
    Foster
    Daniels-Stephens-Kola
    Ramsey-Ritchie-KDB-Willian
    Luka-Kane-Firmino

    Elliot. Suttner-Long-Carroll

Do i get Richarlison this week for Ritchie because he seems like the best 6 right now.
Or do I get Mooy tonight to generate value because my team is really struggling.

I think I'm going to replace Daniels with a 4.5m defender rather than Dawson (have triple United so can't get Jones) so that I have 0.5 ITB if I want to do Willian -> Antonio or Gabbiadini -> Chicharito the week after. Who is the best 4.5 def? Right now I'm looking at Huddersfield (Lowe/Zanka) or Watford (Britos I guess?).

Its his assist potential that is key - great underlying stats there.

I think us Mooy owners got lucky with that goal - certainly not why I got him in.

Anyone getting him in expecting that every week will be disappointed.

Anyone getting him in and expecting a steady stream of assists and bonus though over their good run all for 5.5 will hopefully be happy.

Agree with this. I bought him for his corners, free kicks and potential penalties.

I'd be happy with an assist every other week, that goal on Sunday was just one final Brucie Bonus 🙁

For 5.5m you can't expect much more than that

    Stephens - Yoshida - Hegazi
    Mane - Eriksen - Mkhitaryan - Phillips
    Aguero - Kane - Chicharito

    Elliot - Carroll - Long - Rosenior.

0.5m in the bank as well for ➡ Trippier.

Think there's a lot of people over-estimating the likelihood of City goals tonight.

A 'back 8' does not get much more solid than Pickford, Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Martina, Baines, Gueye, Schneiderlin.

That is ridiculous. Once Coleman is back and the fixture difficulty eases, Everton have the potential to be one of the best defensive sides in the league.

Having got the 3 points last week I see no reason why they won't sit back and be content with a draw tonight, bets wise I'm taking Everton +1.5 at a shade above evens, plus a bit on 0-0 at ~22/1.

      • 7 Years

I agree, but it's still City. If Everton keep them out I might start looking at Pickford regardless of the rest of their run. Or Keane to get on the end of those Siggy bombs.

Given City can always be shaky at set pieces, it's not beyond the realms that Keane does just that tonight you know. He opened his account midweek I believe. If Sig starts I might be tempted by the 18/1 anytime scorer.

although I think they will still get plenty of clean sheets, more so down to the system they play in rather than the individuals

It's why I got Keane in draft.....can sit on the bench but then be unleashed from GWK 6....fully expect lots of CS from then.

But tonight they are doomed 😉

Yeah Keane is a great man to have in a draft, I thought he was £5m in the main game but just seen £5.5, will probably put me off a bit...

As a KdB & Jesus owner, I do hope you're right about tonight.

Hopefully this means that if City want to score, they'll need to try some long shots or profit from a set piece rather than trying to play through the back 8.
      KDB, this is your moment.

Harry Kane is the ultimate differential for me in my Cash MLs right now.

Leaders don't own him do I take the risk and captain him?

Chasing by 30+ points I have Lukaku to cover half his points

most definitely captain him; can an easy brace for him this weekend

Too early to be concerned with who others own. Play your own game for now.

Everything is pointing to an explosion sooner rather than later. Could be an outstanding differential captain for you this week. Don't forget that this Burnley side conceded twice to 9 man Chelsea.

Was unlucky against Chelsea, but I always think a differential pick should be a player on form.

Know it's only 2 games in, but Kane on 0 goals vs other plays who've started well is no question for captaincy really.

      Foster - Elliott
      PVA* - Bavies - Bertrand* - Daniels* - Hunemeier*
      KdB* - Willian* - Tadic - Astu* - Carroll
      Kane - Lukaku - Firmino*

      WC time? Asterisks out for:

      Alonso - Jones - Hegazi - Mbemba - Eriksen/Mane/Alli - Pogba - Mooy - Cheatarico

Overall scores mainly depend on how many teams in the draft.

You could be in a 2 player one. With no money or team limits, the scores could be massive.
