The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Saturday

The Manchester clubs are united in tormenting Fantasy Football managers.

In fairness, we should have expected Pep Guardiola’s City teamsheet to prove a source of frustration. It should come as no real surprise.

Even so, he seems determined to baffle us.

Having withdrawn Gabriel Jesus at half-time on Monday night following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, it appeared to signal that Guardiola’s affections were leaning towards Sergio Aguero for the lone striker role.

But just six days later, it was Aguero who made way as the City manager shuffled his formation and personnel in a bid to solve the frustration of Monday’s misses.

Aguero travelled to the Vitality Stadium today on the back of seven goals in his last seven away trips. He was backed by over 265,000 (5.7%) Fantasy Premier League managers with the captaincy.

Inevitably, Jesus took his opportunity to justify his selection. He served up his first goal of the season at Bournemouth having been sold by over 119,000 managers, triggering a 0.1 drop in price.

To make matters worse Aguero, along with today’s other omission from Monday’s teamsheet – John Stones – were both introduced from the bench by Guardiola. Auto-subs and Vice Captains were nullified.

City’s formation change – a move to 4-3-3 – also saw Kevin De Bruyne retreated alongside David Silva and Fernandinho as part of a central three.

That role muted his goal threat and again left him probing around the fringes of City’s 2-1 victory.

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 3 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

But those brief flashes will be lost on his Fantasy owners. They will continue to plot the exit of a 10.0 priced asset that has delivered three successive blanks. De Bruyne has already been sold more than any other player since the passing of today’s deadline.

As for United, while they engineered a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Leicester City at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers were left smarting by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss.

It remains to be seen if this dents Lukaku’s stock. There will be an ongoing debate on whether he will retain spot-kicks and whether Paul Pogba could be the beneficiary in waiting.

But for now, we can only consider what comes next in this current Gameweek.

Captained by over 1.7 million (37.3%) FPL managers, Lukaku’s zero point return sat alongside Aguero’s failing and a first blank from Pogba to set up Sunday’s performers.

Spurs’ Harry Kane now heads into a Wembley date with Burnley sporting over 741,000 armbands. Some 53% of his 1.3 million owners have trusted him as their skipper.

Confidence in Kane has been dented following his two single point returns, but now the scene is set for him to deliver the season’s first major twist.

A double-figure tally would cause a significant swing. Couple that with an impressive performance from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and it would represent a turning point that could spark transfer hits and Wildcards aplenty.

While Saturday disappointed, it means that Sunday could be huge for all kinds of reasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  1. KDB - when to ditch?

As much as I want to get rid of KDB before the price drop tonight I think it is more reasonable to wait. It is easy to get stuck on the feeling of having to get rid rather than thoughtfully bringing in the right player.

On a normal gameweek I would be hesitant to make a 10m move with nearly half the teams to play. Last week I took out Alonso before his game to enable a double transfer, so that brace was bitter-sweet for me even though I got his points. I had, and still have, every intention of bringing him back in as their fixtures improve within a few gameweeks. It was a risky exception that I perhaps shouldn't have made, but at least it was a 7m exception and not a 10m exception. Those that ship KDB today may well be punished tomorrow, as we are so early into the season that a single game of information can be vital on who to replace him with.

Add the fact that there is an international break, with important late-stage qualifiers for the world cup, for a majority of our players. Not having any transfers for that period is equal to accepting that if injuries happen you're in for one or more hits or even forced to wildcard.

Finally, the transfer window is still open. We may see signings that threaten some of our starting players, or perhaps a new signing that we would like to get in right away.

Adding these up makes it easier to hold on to KDB until a safe transfer, or couple of transfers, can be made, or at least until a possible second price drop is imminent.

I think that he's onto something with Sunday being a possibly huge day of the season so far. And we all knew that City were gonna frustrate us with rotation. Did not mean to disrespect his article by any means.

KDB is nailed and a quality player IMO. However, I have made the transfer and gone KDB to Alli for GW4. KDB playing so deep has made him good for City, but rubbish for FPL.

I think it does benefit CIty. He controlled the game today and his set pieces were good.

Personally think City should drop Jesus and play Aguero up top with Silva, Sane and Bernardo supporting him.

I agree, I'm waiting for the fixtures to be played tomorrow.

Suppose for most people a Spurs or Pool mid will be the replacement- what if you bring in Eriksen and he gets injured tomorrow? You'd feel like a right idiot. Plus he is already 9.6 so there's not much you could do with 0.4 that you couldn't do with 0.3 right now.

Take the drop and digest the games tomorrow- then make a transfer or two if needs be, or you could wait a bit longer to see what crops up from the transfers and internationals.

I think you're right. Personally, I'm free from trouble of this sort, since I went with Jesus and he doesn't seem likely to drop a second time now, but I agree on principle.

Those who make the transfer now will blame their "bad luck" when the risk materialises and their choice of transfer in gets injured on international duty or they otherwise end up with an injury nightmare and no FT.

We just don't know yet. Given that city have been frustrated for the last two gameweeks we may see a new formation for GW4. If KDB doesn't play deep then all of a sudden people will come limping back.

All this uncertainty about city is working as a repellant for the cautious managers, but at the same time it feeds the stubborn ones (like myself) with glimmers of (false?) hope to hang on to.

I'm looking at alternatives too, but Liverpool rotation worries and Spurs away to Everton for GW4 are not great prospects. I'd rather have KDB at home to 'Pool in his current role than Eriksen at Everton. Only concern for me are the price drops and perhaps price rises of alternatives.

Totally with you on this... his passing ability is absolutely top notch... he's surely going to be one of city's key men and the rotation of Aguero and Jesus worries me. The pool game will be a key factor in deciding what I do with Kev, I think...

transferred KDB and Lacazette for Sanchez + Firmino..Enough with his deep play antics.Plus, Arsenal are shit. Lacazette seems to try to make penetrating runs, which his stupid teammates always seem to miss or even worse do not pass after seeing it.

Last season I did early transfers to catch rises and avoid drops. Sometimes it worked sometimes not, having an injury or suspension today or during internationals is very possible. Yes TV is important, but I prefer to wait and have more information before next GW.

I watched City and it's true, KDB likes to drop deep and control the game, his passing is top notch and he shoots only from outside, rarely goes in the box. Having said this, I want some City cover and he's the best bet, Kun and Jesus will share minutes.

      I'm keeping.

Well I've got him and don't want him. I've missed the 0.1 drop. IMO loads of wildcards will be played over the next fortnight meaning he is unlikely to drop further. Consequently I can afford to wait until the morning of GW4 to assess the situation, or even play him GW4 and ship him out if there is no change straight after.

          • 10 Years

Well said, the amount of wild cards triggered may prevent further drops. That could even come into consideration for when I play my wildcard. If I pick a week where few other managers are playing theirs I may enjoy more price rises.

Has there been any study on this theory?

I held through the drop last night...if really pushed I'd have picked up Eriksen, but with Kane and Davies on board for Everton away I'm more interested in observing the return of San(c)hez who has BOU home on GW4.

Sure, losing 0.1m TV hurts, but the counter argument is that correctly picking the fastest riser after today's matches will eclipse that benefit. Just look how quickly Alli rose last season after his first brace.

Sure you could gamble and guess the right one now - but there's also a danger of injury to worry about with most of the desirable premium options still to play.

Wouldn't it be nice for the FPL shenaniganmeisters in control of price rises to occasionally hold off the drops on a Saturday night...you know in the same way they hold off on some price rises during the week when it doesn't suit them 🙂

I got rid of him as soon as the United match finished for Pogba. 1.8 in bank and I now own a player who a) actually shoots and b) is allowed in the box

Pep has killed Kevin as a fantasy asset this season he is playing far too deep. For 10m that is scandalous. He's not worth 7m in that role.

Abandon ship and stop wasting time and losing value.

Disagree. I was eyeing up KDB > Eriksen before this gameweek anyway. Your Alonso example is taking out a player before he has played, here we are taking out a player after he has played, and blanked, again. That's how he football gets you. You make a mistake and then think you're learning from it by applying the opposite answer to an unrelated problem, but each choice is separate. Shipping Alonso has nothing to do with shipping KDB. He's playing so

    21. ChristoBisto

deep and is expensive, gotta get rid. A bit over the international break wouldn't be the end of the world and we already know Eriksen has form.

I'm not saying that my logic is only based on my Alonso decision. It was a different matter, but a relatable one, as I knew who I wanted in but perhaps could have chosen a better player to get rid of. This time it is reversed - I know who I want to sack but not who to bring in.

This post, for me, lists all the typical, objective and positive things about KDB plus the price market.

For me, though, ti just does not work. And I let him go last night, taking in Mane, aware of all the risks above.

Yet 270 minutes of deep playing in a supposed-to-soar-with-goals Club with good fixtures and producing nil outcome tells a lot for me. I do not cafe if he scores next week. He should have done more at that price and he is the least exciting (fantasy asset wise) of all 10+ players on the field.

I have gained 0.2 from my action last night and am happy with that.

No thanks not for me. Shipped him out for Eriksen before he went to £9.6m and sitting here right now before Spurs play Burnley it looks an ok move. For me all Eriksen has to to is turn up not get injured and I'll already be up pointswise on what KDB did for those who waited for him v Bournemouth. I just can't spend that sort of coinage on someone who is more likely to assist the assister than get the assist themselves. Even at £8.1m David Silva offers up more points and value...

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 1 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

To be honest my entire defence may as well have been injured today.

          In fact my whole team!

Doubt Jones rises tonight. Richarlison was on 100.5+ last night and didn't go up. Unlikely Jones breaches 100.0 tonight and then people's interest probably dies off after tomorrow for two weeks.
