Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Saturday

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata maintains his impressive form with a goal for Spain as he continues to promote his Fantasy CV.

Here are the notes from Saturday’s international fixtures.

Morata the merrier

Alvaro Morata needed just 18 minutes to confirm his continued fine early-season form as Spain completed a convincing 3-0 win over fellow European football royalty Italy.

The Chelsea striker had to make do with a place on the bench as coach Julen Lopetegui opted to play with no recognised forwards at all, preferring instead to use Man City midfielder David Silva as a ‘false nine’.

But when Morata finally made it onto the pitch, he made an immediate impact, scoring Spain’s third goal a mere five minutes after replacing Andres Iniesta.

The strike means that he now has three goals and two assists from four matches this season, explaining why only Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is ahead of him in the Fantasy Premier League forwards standings.

It was widely anticipated that Morata would take time to adjust to his new surrounds at Chelsea; a theory that clearly played a part in deciding a modest 12.5% ownership.

Chelsea’s tough opening schedule also dampened early enthusiasm – the Blues have already played Spurs and Everton and still have to face Arsenal and Man City, albeit both at home, before Gameweek 7 is done.

But after their shock opening day defeat to Burnley, Antonio Conte’s side are starting to look every inch the defending champions, and Morata has clearly settled into his new role as their spearhead.

His goal and assist returns in both home matches to this point have sparked massive interest. More than 196,000 FPL managers have drafted in the Spaniard and, with 40,000+ making the direct trade, Morata has proved the most popular Harry Kane replacement ahead of Gameweek 4.

Of the strikers with two or more goals this season, only Romelu Lukaku can better his attempts (9), his minutes per chance average (20.9) and penalty box touches (15), while he and Firmino are the only strikers with two assists.

With Eden Hazard closing in on full fitness, Chelsea’s attacking threat – and supply line for Morata – is surely only going to improve, even if the Belgian is likely to regain penalty duties.

And based on current form, the forthcoming visit from Arsenal is not the test of old, which makes the Blues’ short-term schedule more palatable – (lei ARS sto MCI cry WAT bou), Man City notwithstanding.

Should he be given the chance to make hay in Spain’s Tuesday night trip to Liechtenstein, Morata will return to domestic duty for Gameweek 4 with form on his side, Hazard potentially supplying chances and with the fixtures more favourable than anticipated.

Elsewhere…

On a quiet night for Premier League players, Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn’s superb winner for Wales against Austria demonstrated the wealth of attacking options available to Jurgen Klopp.

Elsewhere in that encounter, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey shook off doubts surrounding his fitness to play 90 minutes.

Returning to Liverpool, Sadio Mane played the full 90 minutes as Senegal were held to a goalless home draw with Burkina Faso. They will now play the reverse fixture – a vital clash for the Senegalese – on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Man United centre-half Eric Bailly supplied an assist in Ivory Coast’s 3-0 win in Gabon. Spurs’ Serge Aurier completed 90 minutes for the visitors.

Brighton defender Shane Duffy gave the Republic of Ireland the lead in Georgia, only for Martin O’Neill’s men to have to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle United’s suspended striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for the third match running in all competitions as Serbia beat Moldova 3-0, with Man United’s Nemanja Matic playing 77 minutes for the hosts.

Finally, Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson managed a second consecutive full 90 minutes of the season, but couldn’t stop Iceland slumping to a 1-0 defeat in Finland.

Hi folks, just looking for some thoughts on this strategy

    Fabianski, Elliot
    Mee, Dawson, Kolasinac, Dunk, Daniels
    Pogba, Ritchie, Mkhi, Eriksen, Salah
    Lukaku, Chicharito, Abraham

Got £2.0 in the bank & ideally want to get the front 3 to Lukaku, Firmino, Morata without using the WC (I know that'll take some funds).
I figure Kolasinac and Ritchie to 4.5's are the obvious downgrade candidates. I'll still be falling short to get in Morata so maybe would have to downgrade Pogba as well. Or hang on to Ritchie and just massively downgrade Pogba. And I guess if I'm really itching for Morata before I have the money I could always pivot off Lukaku to him.

So I suppose I'm asking who's the most nailed 4.5 mid & if this strategy seems sound. Liked Kola's prospects going into the season & I know he should get some wingback looks but the limited CS potential is tough to justify at the pricetag. Cheers

Nothing wrong with your post at all.

Pogba is looking like very good value for money so I’d be reluctant to downgrade him, your call if you think Morata will explode.

I’ll be downgrading Kola as well although there’s a difference of opinion on here about it. Get a playing defender though as you’ll be weakish at the back so want the full five in rotation.

Thank you, yeah I can't argue with that Pogba assessment. All the more encouraging that the underlying stats were there even when he didn't get on the scoresheet.

Definitely will heed that advice on the full five. Or if I ditch the Morata plan as feeling like over-tinkering and banking funds are less of a concern I suppose the Kola downgrade could be to a Southampton defender or something of the like. Appreciate your thoughts.

Don't go through that much hassle to get Morata, Hazard will provide far better Chelsea option when he's back. How about Chica to Firmino?

I would choose Tom Caroll for 4.5 Mid. On the other hand, having Lukaku, Pogba, Mkhi reduce your chance to maximize your point. Should drop 1 of them.

    De Gea Elliot
    Bertrand Danilo Naughton Mee Long

    Lukaku Jesus Abraham

    Transfers planned for wildcard are
    De Gea>Forster
    Danilo>Jones

    Jesus>Morata
    Abraham>Firmino

Would leave me with nothing in the bank. Am I kneejerking lol

    FAO wildcarders.

Your teams are too focused on gameweeks 1 to 3.

Think longer term. Your Wildcard needs to last dozens of weeks.

Make sure you have a Stoke, Everton and Leciester player in your WC team. Plan for the fixture shift further down the line.

I think most current WCs will wildcard pretty quickly post new year and use the Free Hit for the big double game week and BB for the lottery that is week 38. You've taken a curious amount of pleasure at the strategic failure of week 4 WCs but I reckon Mark and his ilk have thought about it a little more than you think..

Fair point. I do think that, privately, Mark regrets his Wildcard. He said he wanted to do it for team value and to fix 4 things in his team.

Well, the price rises haven't materialised and you can fix 50% of your 4 problems with just a -4.

      Or alternatively...

      Elliott Woodman
      Alonso Jones Davies Robertson Tuanzebe
      Pedro Pogba Alli Mane Carroll
      Jesus Lacazette Ayew
      0.3 itb

Not wildcarding but had a play about and this is what id go for. I like to have at least one player from the so called big six teams. Jesus and Lacazette are the two primed for most points in my opinion from City and Arsenal. Not keen on any of the rest from those two sides.
The rest fall in to place after that by doubling up on a mid and defender to compensate for not having a striker.
No offence but id rather have this team than a one full of Everton Stoke and Leicester players.

Heh, I have Jesus/Lacazette but I don't feel great about their long term prospects. I've already taken the pricefalls on the chin so I'm going to give them their home matches this week, but then it'll be time to sell.

I wouldve been buying those at 10.4 each as ive got Kane and Lukaku currently. That's the right way to be on though, having a bit patience.

It will change every week with the players that are doing well... within 3 weeks I predict Haz & Kane will have joined Lukaku/Firmino as essential. With those 4 you have penalties for the 4x most attacking teams in the league.

I also think Lacazette and/or Sanchez & Ramsey will be right back up there - Arsenal should be scoring 10-12 goals in their next 3 home games (which come along in the 4 week window before next international break)

Last year, we saw multiple hits to get City players in before their GW27 double and then hits to take them out before their GW28 blank. Instead, you could use the free hit chip in a similar situation.

Ah OK will pace it out accordingly then!

My tactic was to pick underrated players who rack up decent points...I think this might be linked to the term differentials...which appears to be a bad strategy:

The idea that a single player, selected for low ownership when compared to other teams, and assessed over the course of a season, will give you the opportunity to rise above other teams, purely based on low ownership, is nonsense. I’ll say it again – pick the players you think will score the most points. The differentials will take care of themselves.
