Scout Report – Wesley Hoedt

Southampton bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Dutch international Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £15 million.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Saints, and gave an insight as to what we can expect from him during his time at St Mary’s:

“I’m a strong, physical central defender with qualities on the ball. My main task will be defending, but hopefully, I can add those qualities on the ball to Southampton.”

The History

Hoedt joined hometown club AZ Alkmaar at the age of 11 and progressed through the club’s academy to make his senior debut in a UEFA Europa League match against PAOK in December 2013.

He established himself in the first-team squad the following season and made 24 league appearances, scoring twice.

The defender agreed to join Lazio on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 and featured regularly in Serie A over 24 starts.

The Dutchman found it difficult to break into the XI at the start of last season, but was a regular during the second half of the campaign, scoring two goals in 23 league outings.

Hoedt represented Holland at U20 and U21 levels, making 10 appearances, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in March this year.

He has started five of Holland’s last six matches and looks to have emerged as a first choice option for his country.

The Prospects

A ball-playing centre-back with an impressive left foot, Hoedt looks to have the credentials to be a huge asset for Southampton.

Indeed, he displays many of the same characteristics as compatriot Virgil van Dijk, who, against the odds, still remains a Southampton player following the passing of last Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Hoedt has the ability to switch play with accurate long diagonal passes and is strong in the tackle.

Still only 23, he has good experience from his time in both Holland and Italy, and should warrant a regular starting berth at St Mary’s.

Saints have started the season strongly at the back, keeping clean sheets in two of their three matches.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have been a solid pairing in central defence, flanked by full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.

They have only given up four big chances, although they do rank joint-fourth for the most penalty area attempts conceded with 28.

Mauricio Pellegrino decided to name Hoedt on the bench for last weekend’s goalless draw with Huddersfield Town, but is likely to turn to the Dutch defender sooner rather than later.

Looking at the underlying statistics of the three central defenders last season, Hoedt only averaged a clearance, block or interception every 13.2 minutes.

That was inferior to both Yoshida (10.1) and Stephens (12).

However, standing at 6ft 2 in tall, Hoedt did win an incredible 84% of his aerial duels, which was considerably better than both Yoshida (57%) and Stephens (43%).

That alone could be enough to warrant him coming straight into the starting XI – Saints have conceded more headed chances (14) than any other side so far.

At the other end of the pitch, Hoedt averaged a shot every 94.1 minutes, superior to both Yoshida (138) and Stephens (367.25).

Hoedt has scored six goals in senior football and may well provide more of an atacking threat than Stephens and Yoshida, although the latter has caught the eye so far, registering four shots already.

As the senior centre-back, and having just signed a new contract, Yoshida may be the more likely to retain his start in central defence.

But the Japanese defender has played all three matches this season as the left-sided centre-back – the position which Hoedt should take up, which perhaps offers a little hope to Stephens’ 0.9% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Yoshida and Stephens owners could be best advised to hold for the time being, until we see who Pellegrino chooses for the Gameweek 4 home meeting with Watford.

Matters are complicated further by Van Dijk’s failure to see a deadline day move. Reports today confirmed that he was back training with the full squad having been forced to work alone in solo sessions to this point.

The article speculates that Pellegrino will provide an update on his status prior to the Gameweek 4 meeting with Watford. It also states that Van Dijk will require reserve team action before threatening to be a factor in the starting XI. Even so, with the possibility that he will be an additional option, it is clear that the situation in the centre of the Southampton defence is far from certain.

Their schedule remains very favourable (WAT cpl MUN sto NEW WBA bha BUR) all the way up to Gameweek 11, so owning one of their back four, or even Fraser Forster in goal, looks advisable.

Hoedt has been priced at 5.0 in FPL, in line with Yoshida, Stephens and Cedric, with Ryan Bertrand more expensive at 5.5.

That has us lean towards Cedric at right-back as the best option right now, both in terms of value and as a more assured starter than any of the centre-backs.

The Portuguese international has also offered a strong attacking threat so far, registering four shots (three from inside the penalty area) and producing more crosses (16) than any other Saints player.

In the Sky Sports game, Hoedt is priced at 7.5, cheaper than Bertrand, Cedric and Yoshida but more than Stephens, who has provided excellent value so far at just 6.5.

Given the significant outlay made on the Dutch defender, there appears little doubt he will eventually be considered for starts by Pellegrino.

While the Saints boss is a firm advocate of the 4-2-3-1 formation, he did use a five-man defence on nine occasions while in charge at Alaves last season, so there is a chance he is considering starting with three centre-backs.

Vice-chairman of football Les Reed spoke of Hoedt’s signing adding flexibility to Pellegrino’s centre-back options, so with Cedric and Bertrand appearing well-suited to the wing-back positions, such a change can’t be ruled out.

The next few matches – along with Pellegrino’s comments on Van Dijk – should reveal more on the prospects for Hoedt, Stephens and Yoshida. However, it’s unlikely that any update will prevent us from prioritising the Saints’ full-backs from this point on.

    Morning all,

Few issues I need to sort in my team but i'm reluctant to wildcard just yet. Thinking of moving Danilo on, but who would you suggest to replace him with, happy for it to be a cheaper option to free up some cash.

    Full team is below:

    DDG / Elliot

    Danilo / Kolasinac / Suttner / Stephens / Long

    Ritchie / Pogba / Willian / Mooy / Carroll

    Kane / Lukaku / Jesus

    0.0 ITB, 1FT

    Cheers

Decent team, but I'm a bit worried about your midfield. I think you have too much up top and I would probably wildcard even though I would generally consider this too early. Danilo to Maguire or Jones/Blind would be the single transfer option.

Thanks. Yeah i agree i have too much up top and need to start to adjust into midfield a little.

Considering Jesus out soon and then topping up the midfield. Want a Liverpool mid but think that will be next week.

Maguire is a good shout, just annoying they have chelsea this week.

NP, always feed the goat.. It's kind of a golden rule.

Shame about M's next fixture.. Otherwise one more Southampton defender would be fine. I don't have any problems doubling up.

Yeah cedric could be good. Conscious Stephens is on the edge of being dropped so he'll need to go aswell imminently although i'm happy to hold this week and see where the land lies.

I should know this but.. Do wildcard transfers not count at all for price changes, or do they only count when GW rolls over?

i.e. could Kane have -100k+ transfers go through on saturday morning?

I think it should be OK and I am planning for the longer term, given the fixtures this week he would be on the bench anyway but I need some differentials to boost my ranking.

Kane (c) every week? That's the one downside.

Otherwise I would look at naughton in defence and brady in MF in place of the cheapies. Good team overall with mild benching headache.

Brady over Mooy? Whats the thinking? Mooy on all set-pieces and Pens, Brady shares with Defour and will have to benched every away game.

Mooy is probably not on pens. After he missed his last pen in the C'Ship, Lowe took the next one and scored.

Yeah seems that way, Mooy 2nd in line and on all corners and free-kicks though, with someone up top who can actually convert chances. Not sure I can rely on Wood/Vokes/Wells (when fit) to put away the chances Brady creates.

          Calvert Lewin is a risk
You could do Aurier to Davies as Aurier is also risky at the moment. Which would give you the money to do CL to Tammy or Joselu who are more certain of gametime

Aurier wouldn't be playing for me this week anyway given the fixtures, neither would CL.

If you read it again more carefully you will notice that i said pplayers that will play on Saturday
I think most people are pretty sure both will play Saturday
Not so confident about Aurier and CL
Aurier may if trippier isnt fit
Long term Aurier will be great option
But no point bringing in someone until we know they are playing
Re Rose and Davies- Davies has the spot until Rose is fit. Unlikely Rose will start straightaway after 9months until he has made a sub appearance so we will have warning
Play the game in 4 or 6 week blocks

Think I will just stay away from Spurs defence all together, will be even more difficult to judge once Champs League starts. Gone back to my original WC team of:

                Foster - Elliot
                Jones - Mee - Lowe - Naughton - Mbemba
                Salah - Eriksen - Mkhi - Pogba - Alli
                Morata - Firmino - Tommy A

Ben Davies' playing time very much at risk. I think Spurs starting line-up will be:

Toby A, Vertonghen, Sanches with Aurier and Rose wing backs.

Is Tammy A more nailed on than Calvert-Lewin given Bony's arrival? Think Joselu is safe and tempted by him however.

Forgot to move Kane out before the 0.1M price drop - wanted him back in at 12.4 so I'd get 9.0M for 2 x 4.5 DEF

Currently on Hegazi (4.8) and Mbemba (4.0) + 0.1 ITB

So only got 8.9M to spend rather than the desired 9M

Neither of the above look safe - Mbemba yellow flagged

Is Wimmer nailed at Stoke - only decent 4.4 I can see - and then team up with either TAA, Mee or Ward??

Other 3 DEF is Jones, Cedric & Naughton

        Cheers

Yeh - on WC - just trying to get 5 nailed defenders
Clyne out - but TAA and Gomez could rotate
Wimmer is up against Shawcross, Cameron & Zouma
Mbemba yellow flagged and maybe replaced anyway
Hegazi - up against Dawson Evans & McAuley

Current team is (With 0.9ITB and 0FT)

        Cedric Jones Suttner Mee Mbemba
        Eriksen Mkhi Salah Brady RLC

Is it worth it or should I wait and see what happens this GW before making any decisions?

Just watched the scoutcast from last night on way to work which was really goid. Think I feel happier now with my WC afyer watching so thanks guys 🙂

        Fabianski
        Cedric Mee Jones Alonso
        Salah Pogba Eriksen
        Morata Lukaku Firmino

        Elliot Carroll Chalobah Mbemba

That's excellent. Treating Alonso like a midfielder - which he basically is and unofficially going 3-4-3.

Eriksen a great alternative spurs captain I think

Plus - you've added Morata to the mix which is great. Very strong across the board and in Carroll and Chalobah you have two certain starters with the slight chance of something extra.

This radical wildcard gets a thumbs up from me.

How is it radical? 90% same as mine and I regard it as temple WC for this GW.

He's not gone for Kane - with Swansea in GWK 5 and his eye popping stats that's a risk - but he has Eriksen - who is a good alternative captain.

Also if you saw last night's Scoutcast you'd see that wildcards being posted are very different indeed.

Not all have Alonso - who the more radical managers view as a midfielder in all but name.

If the above is the template then great....but I suspect if you were to line up 10 wildcard teams here they would be very different.

Oh right. I've seen plenty RMTs here without Kane. For myself on a WC I'm Kane less with Alonso.

I dunno, how doe s this compare?

                FoRster (Elliot)
                Alonso, Cedric, Dawson, Naughton (Holgate)
                Eriksen, Salah, Mkhi, Pogba (Chalobah)
                Lukaku (c), Firmino (Calvert-L)

I'm hurting without Mane and Morata but i just can't squeeze them in.

Yes - I have the same dilemma

Struggling with a 4th Defender who will bring value - still have Kane
If I go Morata to Kane - then Alonso becomes a 4th Defender with Mbemba as a 5th

Jonty - do you ditch Kane for Morata?

              No - that's for the radicals 🙂

I'm looking at Gabbiadini to Firmino for free and keeping Kane for a while.

I think I'm comfortable without Kane (for now) and see how it goes with Eriksen as my differtial Spurs coverage.

Chalobah will probably become RLC if declared fit

Good team. Fabianski and Mbemba only weak spots. I would go Forster or even foster ahead of Fab. And pick naughton if you want to avoid a saints double up.

Same here, feel a lot better now, finally settled on this:

          Foster (Elliott)
Cedric*, Alonso, Hegazi, Kolasinac (C), Naughton*
          Mkhitarian*, Salah*, (Brady*), (Chalobah*), (Romeu*)
          Firmino, Kane, Lukaku

WC picks denoted with an *
Not really sure anyone on this site likes or understands it lol

Are you going 523? Or start Brady every week? Not convinced by Kola till Wenger sorts out the team. Hegazi is the other slightly risky pick.

Yes, 5 atm with Brady filling in if one of the defenders doesn't play. I can understand how anyone would feel about Kola but had him from the off and the next 3 fixtures at least will decide his fate.
Hegazi was picked from the start too so hard to offload him right now, trying to get one more price rise out of him then ship him out with Kola if things don't work out.

I think Kolasinac is costing you there and the midfield is a good player light.

You are rightly relying on Alonso delivering like a midfielder....but can the Arsenal man? If you are wrong regarding him then that structure is tricky to sort out without another wildcard or hits.

Look at what you could get by ditching Kane.

Oh trust me, I've tinkered more than the Tinkerman himself and have tried teams without Kane and yes they do allow me to have Silva instead of Brady, but I can't get comfortable without the HurriKane just doesn't sit right with me, especially with the fixture run Spurs are facing too.

              Thanks Jonty.

Budgetwise I would agree about Kola, but so hard to take him out (as discussed on the Scoutcast) with those fixtures coming up. I know Arsenal aren't great atm but I gotta go for it. The plan was to try and give him (and Wenger!) 2 maybe 3 GW at most then replace with Luiz if it doesn't pan out.
Looking like I may have to go Bertrand (or Jones) and one other replacing Hegazi (trying to get another price rise out of him) and Kola though we'll have to see nearer the time...
Yes the Midfield is maybe a player light but playing really 4-3-3 anyway with Alonso and with that frontline something has got to give lol

Was on about -98% so was always a potential risk.

Fplstats is the best by far. Never rely on it though, just see it as a rough (but pretty good) guide.

Some opinions on my WC team please!

I've got £2.8 million left in the bank, only really need £1m to swap Lukaku to Kane if need be. That leaves roughly £1.5m free to upgrade elsewhere (possibly defence).

          Foster, Elliot.

          Jones, Maguire, Cedric, Naughton, Schindler.

          Salah, Alli, Pogba, Brady, Carroll.

          Lukaku, Morata, Mounie.

If you get two wildcards a season, one in the first half of the season and one in the second, does that mean that if you don't wildcard at all before the second wildcard is released you'll have two to use? Or do they not store like that?

          FYI for those with Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri (hamstring) is the one major doubt for the trip to West Brom, so Stoke boss Mark Hughes could hand a recall to Saido Berahino against his former club. Erik Pieters expected to retain their starts in the wing-back roles.

Also doesn't look like Elneny will be picked and is Mooy perhaps all used up...

Thinking Foster is potentially just as good as Fabianski whereas Naughton can outscore the other 4.5 defs

Swansea and WBA are the best sources of cheap defenders at the moment (I don't see Huddersfield sustaining their good start).

Naughton is a 4.5 starter from those 2 teams (and Southampton) so he's highly sought after. Overlooked is 4.5 Fernandez, proving a rock in CD.

I think all 3 Swans 4.5 options plus Foster at 4.5 are great punts, but if you want to spread your risk you'll take Foster + a Swans 4.5 defender. Personally I would be shy doubling on Naughton/Fernandez.

If what I read on an article somewhere is correct, then in the last three years he's finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd among keepers, which is pretty solid. He also has a stronger set of fixtures coming up than Foster

            I can't see past Elliot + 4.0 tbh

That's what I had before wildcarding. Now I'm on a wildcard, I don't want to risk Mbemba or Elliot in case one gets injured because I won't have a WC in the bank. This defensive set up needs to last me until I wildcard again

Sensible. Personally don't see it as a risk. If he gets injured, transfer him out. I'd hope to have gained more than 4 points with the 0.5 saved

Problem you'd have to upgrade to a 4.5 goalie if injured, which in turn probably would mean downgrading one of your outfield players. And I do think that a Fab/Foster + Elliot rotation will warrant the extra 0.5 in points

            Hoedt quite possible.

VVD not physically or mentally ready.

I currently have Jesus and Gabbi upfront with 1FT and £2m in the bank. The options I have are:

          A) Jesus + Gabbi = Firmino + Morata 4pt hit

          B) Jesus = Kane

          C) Jesus = Morata

          D) Gabbi = Firmino

No transfer this week. Every time I look to transfer out Gabbi his fixture is so good I can't.

          Opinions welcome

            C. Morata looks very good atm and I think he'll be in many WC teams in a few week. Do C now and Gabbi > Firmino next week if Gabbi doesn't perform better

          What move to make?

          A) Trippier > Jones
          B) TAA > Naughton
          C) Jesus > Morata

          For a -4
          D) Any of the two above
          E) Trippier > Naughton, Cork > Brady

On a WC, am I good to go?

          Foster
          Alonso / Cedric / Naughton
          Pogba / Salah / Eriksen / Atsu
          Lukaku / Morata / Firmino

          bench : Mbemba / Long / Loftus-Cheek

Looks good, but risky going with two 4m defenders. Mbemba will get dropped at some point.

Yeah, I'm confident that my squad are all full time starters. If I have any worries I can chop and change as I go I guess.

Without some sort of form to make people post their predictions in a consistent format it's something of a nightmare, suspect we'll never get the results unless someone else takes the trouble now.

I'm in the same situation. I'm keeping for now, but if you have him and another 4m defender then maybe look at replacing the other 4m.

The only 4m. Worry is that due to increasing ownership, he might drop when he will not be nailed

The value isn't ideal, but is workable.

The rank is more than acceptable at this stage.
