Scout Report – Wesley Hoedt

Southampton bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Dutch international Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £15 million.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Saints, and gave an insight as to what we can expect from him during his time at St Mary’s:

“I’m a strong, physical central defender with qualities on the ball. My main task will be defending, but hopefully, I can add those qualities on the ball to Southampton.”

The History

Hoedt joined hometown club AZ Alkmaar at the age of 11 and progressed through the club’s academy to make his senior debut in a UEFA Europa League match against PAOK in December 2013.

He established himself in the first-team squad the following season and made 24 league appearances, scoring twice.

The defender agreed to join Lazio on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 and featured regularly in Serie A over 24 starts.

The Dutchman found it difficult to break into the XI at the start of last season, but was a regular during the second half of the campaign, scoring two goals in 23 league outings.

Hoedt represented Holland at U20 and U21 levels, making 10 appearances, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in March this year.

He has started five of Holland’s last six matches and looks to have emerged as a first choice option for his country.

The Prospects

A ball-playing centre-back with an impressive left foot, Hoedt looks to have the credentials to be a huge asset for Southampton.

Indeed, he displays many of the same characteristics as compatriot Virgil van Dijk, who, against the odds, still remains a Southampton player following the passing of last Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Hoedt has the ability to switch play with accurate long diagonal passes and is strong in the tackle.

Still only 23, he has good experience from his time in both Holland and Italy, and should warrant a regular starting berth at St Mary’s.

Saints have started the season strongly at the back, keeping clean sheets in two of their three matches.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have been a solid pairing in central defence, flanked by full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares.

They have only given up four big chances, although they do rank joint-fourth for the most penalty area attempts conceded with 28.

Mauricio Pellegrino decided to name Hoedt on the bench for last weekend’s goalless draw with Huddersfield Town, but is likely to turn to the Dutch defender sooner rather than later.

Looking at the underlying statistics of the three central defenders last season, Hoedt only averaged a clearance, block or interception every 13.2 minutes.

That was inferior to both Yoshida (10.1) and Stephens (12).

However, standing at 6ft 2 in tall, Hoedt did win an incredible 84% of his aerial duels, which was considerably better than both Yoshida (57%) and Stephens (43%).

That alone could be enough to warrant him coming straight into the starting XI – Saints have conceded more headed chances (14) than any other side so far.

At the other end of the pitch, Hoedt averaged a shot every 94.1 minutes, superior to both Yoshida (138) and Stephens (367.25).

Hoedt has scored six goals in senior football and may well provide more of an atacking threat than Stephens and Yoshida, although the latter has caught the eye so far, registering four shots already.

As the senior centre-back, and having just signed a new contract, Yoshida may be the more likely to retain his start in central defence.

But the Japanese defender has played all three matches this season as the left-sided centre-back – the position which Hoedt should take up, which perhaps offers a little hope to Stephens’ 0.9% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Yoshida and Stephens owners could be best advised to hold for the time being, until we see who Pellegrino chooses for the Gameweek 4 home meeting with Watford.

Matters are complicated further by Van Dijk’s failure to see a deadline day move. Reports today confirmed that he was back training with the full squad having been forced to work alone in solo sessions to this point.

The article speculates that Pellegrino will provide an update on his status prior to the Gameweek 4 meeting with Watford. It also states that Van Dijk will require reserve team action before threatening to be a factor in the starting XI. Even so, with the possibility that he will be an additional option, it is clear that the situation in the centre of the Southampton defence is far from certain.

Their schedule remains very favourable (WAT cpl MUN sto NEW WBA bha BUR) all the way up to Gameweek 11, so owning one of their back four, or even Fraser Forster in goal, looks advisable.

Hoedt has been priced at 5.0 in FPL, in line with Yoshida, Stephens and Cedric, with Ryan Bertrand more expensive at 5.5.

That has us lean towards Cedric at right-back as the best option right now, both in terms of value and as a more assured starter than any of the centre-backs.

The Portuguese international has also offered a strong attacking threat so far, registering four shots (three from inside the penalty area) and producing more crosses (16) than any other Saints player.

In the Sky Sports game, Hoedt is priced at 7.5, cheaper than Bertrand, Cedric and Yoshida but more than Stephens, who has provided excellent value so far at just 6.5.

Given the significant outlay made on the Dutch defender, there appears little doubt he will eventually be considered for starts by Pellegrino.

While the Saints boss is a firm advocate of the 4-2-3-1 formation, he did use a five-man defence on nine occasions while in charge at Alaves last season, so there is a chance he is considering starting with three centre-backs.

Vice-chairman of football Les Reed spoke of Hoedt’s signing adding flexibility to Pellegrino’s centre-back options, so with Cedric and Bertrand appearing well-suited to the wing-back positions, such a change can’t be ruled out.

The next few matches – along with Pellegrino’s comments on Van Dijk – should reveal more on the prospects for Hoedt, Stephens and Yoshida. However, it’s unlikely that any update will prevent us from prioritising the Saints’ full-backs from this point on.

Thanks. Other playing defenders are Bertrand Kolasinac and Hegazi so bit risky. Should be OK for this week then review and perhaps bring in Davies for good week 5 fixture and move to Keane or Maguire week 7

If you don't mind making two transfers this might be the best bet. Otherwise, either could be decent, and either could chip in with a goal. Everton are looking the more likely to keep a clean sheet at the moment.

Don't mind the look of it. I think you could hold for a couple of weeks and then WC to bring in any Everton, Leicester or Chelsea players when things start to get better. Hazard should be fit by then and we should have a better idea of whether Alexis will be good for Arsenal or not. That could be a good time to WC.

I enjoyed the look at that anti-FPL draft where you need to fill your budget, and have 11 players who get some minutes, but they have to get the lowest points.

Which players would you be getting in?

    Sandro Hemed

Good 4-4-2? On WC at the moment.

    Foster / Elliot
Cedric Jones Kola Alonso / Naughton
Salah Alli Mkhi Pogba / Carroll
    Morata Firmino / Quaner

    1.4m ITB.

Mkhi and Pogba cover for Kaku. And I have 1.4m ITB to adjust for Kane or Hazard when they come good.

Good to go or do I need changes? Do I have too much money on defense?

    Thanks

Seriously, though, the amount of rubbish the media have to take about hyping players is nonsense, and I'm not generally an apologist for this country's media. Putting a player on the pitch on the most broadcast stage in the world is the club's choice, and it's their job, and the players' agents and advisors to keep them grounded.

Anyway, I'm going off message. 😉 good song!

Was barely any talk of KDB replacements on the scoutcast this week which surprised me! Mark has swapped him for Alli on a WC and Luke will be using a transfer for the same move but that's because they both have Salah.

I don't have Salah but do have Firmino and Kane.

    KDB > Salah or Alli?

    1. GPV

That's a really tight one to call. I think I'd go for Salah just because LFC look more flee flowing and scoring more at the moment, but keep in mind Salah holds some rotation risk with CL and Chamberlain able to cover wings.

Think most of the KDB replacement talk was done the week before.

Salah, Alli, Mane, Eriksen, Mkhitaryan, Pogba - all good options.

I can understand those keeping him but there comes a point when you have to judge him like any other asset.

If any other big hitter had produced 1, 1, and 2 points they would be out the team by now. Never mind the most expensive asset in the game.

Can understand people hoping to ride it out until GW5 onwards when the fixtures get nice but why on earth would you captain such an out of form player in a tough away game? Got to have better options this week.

That's it I can see why people would bring him in with those upcoming fixtures, but he really isn't captain material this game week with that form and a tough fixture.

Tempted by Chicarito, but West Ham have been awful and Huddersfield are a well organised fully functioning team.

Might end up playing safe with Lukaku, though Morata is another tempting option.

Hm, not sure Lacazette not playing was really that relevant to the performance. And Welbeck was the only one who did well. If Sanchez is fit, I don't see who drops out tbh. I'd drop Welbeck ofc, but not sure Wenger will

True, but the North London version of the prawn sandwich brigade don't necessarily know that. Wenger will be under pressure to field his strongest team.

Not sure Wenger has ever folded to "pressure". As stubborn as they come

              Unlike his team 🙂

Who knows? Does Wenger even know yet?

I was thinking of Lukaku >> Lacazette(c) this week. GW3 killed that well and truly. I can't go near Arsenal, fixtures or no fixtures, when I have no idea what team Wenger will send out next weekend. 😕

This is why I’m second guessing Ozil...Really wanted him in for this decent run :/

    Q) To Wildcard or not to Wildcard

I Have 2 FT's & 0.5 ITB but looking at my defence, I could have none playing this week plus I want to lose Redmond & Willian.

    Foster | Myhill
    Danilo | PVA | Stephens | Hegazi | Long
    Willian | Mane | Redmond | Carrol | Lokilo
    Jesus | Kane | Lukaku

Nah don't WC, you could easily just get rid of Willian Stephens and Danilo this week then Redmond next week for just -4pts

    Start two of these:

    A) Stephens (WAT)
    B) T.Carroll (NEW)
    C) Lowe (whu)

    How's it looking lads?

    Fabianski Elliott
    Alonso Bertrand Jones Mee Mbemba
    Eriksen Salah Mkhi Brady Carroll
    Kane Firmino Chicarito

I can get Lukaku for Chica by losing Alonso with a small re-shuffle

      Decent I'd say
Having one of Kaku and Kane does help with captaincy headaches

    On a wildcard>

    Foster, Elliot
    Alonso, Hegazi, Mee (Mbemba, Rangel)
    Mané, Salah, Alli, Pogba (Carroll)
    Kane, Firmino, Abraham

    0.3 in the bank

Any chance I can improve my defence without losing Alonso?

Is Jones 100% nailed for the next 10 league games, that is if he doesn't get injured?

I don't see why not he is playing great? Just looking at your team again not sure about triple Liverpool, why don't you drop one of them (Mane) for someone like Mkhitaryan then use that cash to upgrade defence?

I have thought about it but I feel Mané will always play if he's fit but Mikhi more of a rotation risk. Also Mané is more explosive in my opinion.

KDB has to go cos he's not scoring
Kane has to stay cos he's not scoring
    Hmmm

Kdb playing deep, Kane stats off the charts lmao

I think it has to do with stats. Kane has been unlucky. Hit the woodwork twice. Lots of shots and dangerous while KDB is playing really deep. He's behind Silva.

Got 2 million in the bank.

Anything really worth a transfer here?

    Elliot / Gomes

Bavies (eve) - Dunk (WBA) - Bertrand (WAT)

Brady (CRY) - Pogba (stk) - Mane (mcy)

Firmino (mcy) - Kane (eve) - Lukaku (stk)

Last player will be either Dawson, RLC or Carroll

No. Looks likely to start a lot of games though. Davies (at RWB) and Martina are his competition

Pick a team (thinking of changing from A due to Hegazi and Jones rotation risk):

    (A)
    Foster
    Jones - Cedric - Naughton - Hegazi
    Salah - Mhiki - Alli
    Kane - Lukaku - Firmino

    (B)
    Foster
    Bailly - Cedric - Maguire - Dawson
    Salah - Mhiki - Alli
    Kane - Morata - Firmino

Subs for both teams: Elliot, Carroll, Chalobah, Mbemba

Can you do Kane to Morata and Hegazi to Alonso?

I can, but I really want Kane. If I keep Kane would you prefer 1 or 2?
