Dugout Discussion – Arsenal vs West Brom

The Gameweek concludes at the Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal pay host to West Bromwich Albion.

In short, tonight’s match is very much an audition for Arsenal’s Fantasy assets, who will need to impress in order to enter our thinking for the Gameweeks ahead.

The Gunners have so far been a source of frustration, not least for manager Arsene Wenger.

Alexandre Lacazette has shown glimpses and flirted with our line-ups but goes into tonight’s match cast in the shadow of other heavy-hitters in attack. The Frenchman is still part of 10.2% of squads, though that total continues to dwindle.

Sead Kolasinac is another temptation and perhaps a more viable option.

He has impressed when handed the opportunities by Wenger and now seemingly cemented at left wing-back, he has the chance this evening to play his way into our defences. At 6.0 however, he will need to convince us to push funds into our backlines at a time when attacking players are very much the priority.

Alexis Sanchez could be one of those attacking options but his season has stalled due to injury and unrest to this point. He starts tonight and could easily become the headline act to spark Wildcards and transfer hits aplenty.

But, despite a miserable record at the Emirates, West Brom will surely prove a difficult barrier for Sanchez and Wenger’s attack.

Tony Pulis’ rearguard have conceded the fewest shots in the box in away matches this season (14) and the fewest big chances (2) – both records shared with leaders Manchester City.

They will also pose a threat to Arsenal at set-pieces. Craig Dawson – owned by 4.9% – scored a brace from corner kicks the last time these two teams met.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Solid team but little light in midfield maybe downgrade Alonso and upgrade a midfielder

Not much - great team - it's where I want to get to with front 3 and formation. I personally would swap out Eriksen to Mane to get some Liverpool cover as if Spurs have a bad week you may struggle with that midfield but there are arguments to keep Eriksen - certainly over next two fixtures - he is ill tho so monitor

No Liverpool nor City attack when they are likely to score the most is a worry imo

Eriksen out for Salah, Mané, Coutinho or David Silva. Downgrade Alonso to Azpilicueta maybe, and Aguero > Lukaku.

Similar to mine, main difference is that I have cheaper defenders for Davies and Kol which means I have Silva Mkhi & Gross in midfield

One of my FPL drafts has loads of decent striker options available.

Thinking long term, what should be my order of priority?

    A) Chris Wood
    B) Benteke
    C) Ihenacho
    D) Andy Carroll
    E) Josh King

Kun to lukaku for gw7 then getting kun back for gw8 worth it? Or just save ft?

Would save FT. These plans never seem to work out as there will be another fire to put out next week. Also presume you will lose some value on Kun from selling.

Aguero has a great track record against the top 6.

Guttedto see ML rival has scored 30 more than me..
My front line was: Kane Kaku Kun (c) and
his: Morata (c) Kane Lacazette.. Because of his budget savings he could squeeze in SIlva in MF ahead of my Atsu otherwise identical team..

Morning gents. G2g this week? 1ft 0.8m in bank. Thinking save and then look to shift Firmino for Kane or Morata over the international break. Newcastle vs Liverpool is historically a goal fest so I'll give him last chance over the weekend.

Guys looking to take out Joselu this week for a one week punt before wildcard.
Narrowed it down to these 4 options:

    A) Calvert-Lewin (BUR)
    B) J.Rodriguez (WAT)
    C) Okazaki (bou)
    D) Tammy (whu)

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

Yea but Rafa is going to park the bus lets be honest. I think Joselu will be dropped for Gayle as he offers more pace on the counter which is how Newcastle will be looking to score.

Last week I would have said Calvert-Lewin, but Burnley will sit deep and that doesn't favour his style.

Joselu versus tired Liverpool defenders? He's gotta score someday.

Don’t think Joselu will get the start. He has missed some sitters over the past couple of weeks. Gayle looked lovely when he came in and will provide Newcastle with speed on the counter against a Pool side who will hog possession.

How do you think Liverpool will do against Newcastle? Newcastle defence is pretty solid and Liverpool usually struggle to break down this sort of defensive team - they could also cause Liverpool some problems from corners. Having said that Mane is back and Newcastle are clearly in a different class to Liverpool so they could get destroyed. Wondering if I should double up on Mane and Firmino...

Tough to call. If Newcastle concede the early goal Pool could manage to score 3 or 4.

Newcastle are not great defensively at all. The only decent team they have played so far is a rusty Spurs side in GW1, and even then they sliced them open with ease half a dozen times.

I would suggest a Pool double up is a safe bet - With 3 of Coutinho, Mane, Salah and Firminio on the pitch you have to feel they'll get a hat full of chances and the Newcastle faithful won't accept a park the bus approach so it'll be an open game.

Need to burn a free transfer, does anything need doing here? Using 2 FTs over internationally break to shimmy Man Utd and Dawson to Chelsea and Silva, but keeping those for this week's great fixtures. Only think I can think of is Long > Mbemba. That is the dullest transfer ever

    1. Pauntley

No guarantee that Mbemba will play - Lejeune is back so Clark could move to left back. Mbemba good defensively but struggled going forward against Brighton and Lejeune is a quality player so Benitez may want him in against Liverpool

I have Aguero and Jesus as my front 2, and i am in a bit of a predicament. There will be games where both will play and both will explode. However, there are gameweeks like this one where one doesnt play and i have to watch others get points round me. I would ditch Jesus but then there may be games where Aguero doesn't play or only gets 20 minutes or so.

Do i stick with both, ditch one or ditch both?

The only thing really to do is to downgrade Alonso to a solid 5.0 defender and get Vardy.

Very keen to get Sanchez in. Some lovely fixtures and with 2.4% a successful (c) against Brighton could be a rocket up the standings.

Only way I can do it is him and Vardy for Alli and Jesus, and I have to pull the trigger now otherwise a single 0.1 anywhere and I'll have to do Forster to Fabianski for a hit as well.

    Any thoughts? Many thanks.

Coming to the conclusion that 2 heavy hitters up front is the way to go. Gives you flexibility across the rest of your team if your 3rd forward is in the £5.5m to £6m bracket so you have more balance. Looking at the fixtures/form I expect to transfer out Lukaku and rotate between Morata and Kane whilst Keeping Kun for now. Downside is the transfer value you keep losing.

    1. Courtois in the Rye
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Rotating via transfers is tough on TV and those players are of such high quality they can completely undermine their fixture lists. Feel like at the moment there's an argument for three heavy hitters. I'd quite like to get rid of Lukaku but he scores a brace and your ranking is dead for the week!

Honestly, I don't understand this logic. It basically means you have a premium mid over a premium forward. Whilst this could prove to be better, it doesn't seem to be so. Also the mid-priced mids are far better than the cheaper strikers.

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

No, you have a premium mid + some money to strengthen your defence. The premium forwards are more expensive than the premium mids who are 8-9.5m. Unless you go with Firmino/Vardy as your third striker as they're cheaper.

    3. jia you
      • 7 Years

I think 2 premium and Vardy could be the best strategy. 3 big hitters not enough balance and there's no forward good enough below the Vardy/Firmino level atm.

Save FT for the break, Jesus might well score against Chelsea, monitor CL minutes.

It's good to see someone thinking more deeply about their picks than blindly following the big bang theory of "he got a hat-trick, I must buy him." That being said, Chelsea's fixtures open up after next week so it might be worth bring Morata in a week early if that's where you want to go, rather than messing around with a FT hokey-cokey. However, after trying a big three up top, I'm also a little wary of it because of the sacrifices it forces elsewhere.

      Hey there gents,
I want to save FT for the break so in the event that both Mendy & Eriksen miss out, will I get away with playing Atsu and Ward?

      Fabianski
      Kola / Jones / Davies / Mendy*
      Ramsey / Ritchie / Eriksen*
      Lukaku / Aguero / Kane
      (Nor, Atsu, Ward, Carroll)

Maybe. Not the best fixture for either.

...and doubling up on NEW mids but that could end up an open enough game!

I didn't see the game (only the rebound/pen). Did he look good throughout?

Got rid of him on wc last week (had him since the start). Still happy with my decision as I think he's well behind the other big hitters atm, although the fact he's on pens & ARS fixtures makes him a decent pick. Could easilly score another brace v Brighton!

I've tragically got Kane, Kaku and Jesus but have the funds to upgrade to Aguero after the Chelsea game. Rotation is the risk, so I may go Jesus to Morata instead...

          -Kola-Davies-Stones
          -Eriksen-Mhki-Salah-Atsu-TCarroll
          -Aguero-Lukaku

          /Foster/Lascelles/Mounie//Long

          1FT 0.9m ITB

What to do? Thinking of WCing soong so I can sort my forward line and bench, but was thinking purely on a one game perspective of going Lascelles > Jones? Had originally planned to bring Kane in this week but seems a bit of a lottery at the moment with everyone scoring. Will obviously wait to make any transfers, but just curious on thoughts.

          A) Abraham-Eriksen-Salah-7.2 for defender
          B) Vardy-Alli-Salah-4.5 for defender

Which one looks better? Already have Eriksen-Alli and will bring in Kane.

          Current squad:
          Foster-Elliott
          Jones-Cedric-Clark-Naughton-Dunk
          Mkhitaryan-Alli-Eriksen-Ritchie-Carroll
          Morata-Lukaku-Firmino

Will bring in Kane for Lukaku and take Firmino out definitely. Also want to get Salah in.

Probably A, assuming Eriksen fit. Just because I'd prefer Abraham + say Alonso to Vardy + 4.5m
