Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Wednesday

The big-name strikers keep on scoring, but it is two midfielders who impress the most in wins for both Man United and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho puts the frighteners on Phil Jones owners ahead of a visit from Crystal Palace.

Here are the notes from an impressive night for the English clubs in Champions League action.

No danger Hazard’s not ready

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has been sparing in his use of Eden Hazard as the midfielder recovers from injury.

But he now looks on course to make his first league start of the season in Saturday evening’s huge clash with Man City.

The Belgian was back to his best in Chelsea’s superb 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid, capping a fine individual performance with the assist for Alvaro Morata’s second-half equaliser.

The 10.5-priced playmaker is in just 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League teams and that figure might not increase massively with the in-form City up next.

But he’s a differential in the making for those brave enough to risk him and the Blues’ schedule then improves dramatically after this weekend.

Once the October international break is done, Chelsea begin a very attractive 11-match run that involves only two fixtures – United at home, Liverpool away – to truly test the champions.

Hazard looks poised to take full advantage.

Stationed up front alongside Morata as Conte opted for a 3-5-2 formation, his link-up play with the Spaniard was an eye-catching aspect of a great night for the Blues.

Morata had six shots, Hazard four – including one deflected effort that hit the post – and the pair look to be on the cusp of a very fruitful relationship. Hazard created seven scoring chances – more than any player in the Champions League this week.

Former Real Madrid man Morata thrived in a hostile atmosphere. He looked sharp and hungry throughout to make it seven goals in as many matches in all competitions this campaign.

More than 229,000 managers have brought him in this Gameweek, making him the most popular purchase to date, and even Man City’s defence – they’ve kept three straight clean sheets in the league – will struggle to contain him.

However, there could be potential concerns in the Chelsea camp based on this report this morning suggesting that the striker was seen limping in front of press after last night’s tie. The piece admits that no issue was reported during the player’s own interviews, so we can only await news from Antonio Conte on Friday.

Chelsea won Wednesday’s encounter with its last kick when substitute Michy Batshuayi converted Marcos Alonso’s low cross – a much-needed attacking return from the 19.3%-owned wing-back – and the Blues’ control of a match away from home against one of Europe’s very best sides sent a powerful message to both their domestic and continental rivals.

David Luiz, suspended domestically, returned to the back three but gave away the penalty from which Atletico took the lead. Gary Cahill, who didn’t start last weekend’s 4-0 win at Stoke City, also came back into the defence and looked rather more assured.

It will be a major surprise if he does not feature against City, while Hazard, Morata and Cesc Fabregas were all taken off by Conte, presumably with one eye on the weekend.

Pedro (1.5%), who was among the goals at Stoke, was benched and could be another being lined up to start against the Manchester table-toppers.

United keep on winning

Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Man United brushed aside CSKA Moscow 4-1 in the Russian capital.

The Belgian striker now has ten goals in nine appearances in all competitions this season and the trend to sell the 56.2%-owned asset seems to be finally on the turn.

Some 67,000+ managers have bought him this week with a plum home fixture against Crystal Palace just too good to resist.

On this evidence, his 11.7 asking price looks like money well spent, although four forwards – Morata, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy have been purchased by more this week.

But it was Anthony Martial who impressed the most in Moscow.

The Frenchman has started just once in the league this season and yet he’s still managed 26 points from three goals and an assist.

He was industrious from the get-go last night and scored from the penalty spot, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan had been fouled, as well as providing the assists for all three of United’s goals.

He has now been involved in six goals in his last three matches in all competitions (three goals, three assists).

Mkhitaryan was the other scorer on the night, and his substitution after 60 minutes will have been welcomed by his 33.3% ownership who will be hoping the Armenian continues his own fine from when struggling Palace visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

Martial, however, went off with a knock later on, which could allow Marcus Rashford to return to the teamsheet against the Eagles on Saturday.

Jose Uncertain on Jones

The assumption heading into last night was that the 10.5%-owned Phil Jones, along with the likes of Antonio Valencia, missed out as he was rested.

But, post-match, Mourinho gave a less than heartening update on Jones’ prospects for Saturday.

“I think (Michael) Carrick has no chance, Jones I have many doubts and (Marouane) Fellaini I have a hope, just a hope.”

As the most transferred in (111,000+) defender in the Gameweek, Jones’ absence would be a bitter blow. United face an attack without a recognised striker after Christian Benteke was sidelined for weeks and are heavily backed to claim a sixth clean sheet in seven.

The cynics among us could suggest that, with an international break just around the corner, Mourinho is now looking to buy Jones some more time off.

It’s perhaps no coincidence that, prior to the last international break, we witnessed the same behaviour. The United manager’s attempts to talk up Jones’ ankle problems in late August were to no avail as the defender still went on to play 180 minutes across England’s pair of matches. There’s a feeling that he’s determined to prevent the same situation occurring again.

Should Jones not recover in time for the Palace fixture, it looks like a straight shoot-out between Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling to partner Eric Bailly at the heart of the United defence. That’s unless Mourinho opts to go with the three-man backline utilised in Moscow last night, which perhaps seems unlikely given Palace’s lack of conviction at either end of the pitch.

  3. Best Chelsea Defender

Like many on here, I'm looking at bringing in a Chelsea defender for GW8 - they're one of the best defences in the league, and they have a good long run of fixtures.

As I see it, there are three viable options at the moment - Alonso (7.1), Azpilicueta (6.5) and Luiz (5.9), with a significant 0.6 gap between each.

Courtois probably won't get enough save points to justify his premium over a cheaper keeper, and Moses and Cahill may still be first choice at right wing back and left centre back respectively, but the signings of Zappacosta and Rüdiger have cast some doubt there.

Since Alonso and Luiz joined late in the summer of 2016, those two and Azpilicueta have started 35 league matches together. Here's how they've fared in those games:

Alonso - 206 points, 5.9 points per game, 29.0 points per million
Azpilicueta - 169 points, 4.8 points per game, 26.0 points per million
Luiz - 150 points, 4.3 points per game, 25.4 points per million

I think this is a valuable exercise for a few reasons. Firstly, by only looking at games all three started, there's no advantage to any player who has featured in a higher percentage of easy fixtures.

Also, Chelsea have played in the same 3-4-3 system since Alonso came into the team, and the BPS system has not changed significantly since last season, so this long term view should give us a better picture than just focusing on the start of this season.

You can see that they seem to have been well priced by FPL this season - Alonso's attacking threat saw him come out on top, whilst Azpilicueta's bonus points prowess and occasional assists meant he outscored Luiz.

The key number for me is the points per million, though. This is simply calculated by dividing each player's total points by their current FPL price. A higher figure represents better value.

By this measure, despite his lofty price, Alonso is actually the best pick for the money of the three, and should justify the extra outlay. Azpilicueta also comes out slightly ahead of Luiz in value, so it looks like a reasonable use of 0.6 to grab him over the Brazilian. However, as appealing as Azpilicueta is, with his nailed on bonus charms, if you ignore the 14-point difference between them in GW6, and can possibly stretch to Alonso on your WC over the break, I think that you really should.

I'll got for Courtois once he drops to 5.4.

Not a rotation risk, practically a season keeper, gives you minimum 0.5 extra to spend elsewhere and consistent CS returns (compared to cheap goalkeepers).

Premium goalkeepers are unwisely dismissed on here.

Premium goalkeepers are not dismissed on here.
De Gea is and has been a popular choice for the reasons that you actually ( and wrongly) used for Courtois.
Courtois's ceiling season haul will fall 30 points short of the top defender and that realistically could be nearer 50 points.
It's subject to each team and the case of Chelsea Courtois is a poor pick.

Great post, I've got Alonso and have been strongly considering downgrading him to one of those or maybe Cahill too. Do you have the numbers for Cahill? Because I have the feeling with his goals he could be ripe for investment at 6.3. Surely he's in the team most weeks as skipper?

      1. Ludo

Alonso and Cahill have started 32 games together in the same period:

Alonso - 182 points, 5.7 points per game, 25.6 points per million
Cahill - 170 points, 5.3 points per game, 27.0 points per million

Interestingly, that suggests Cahill was better value than Alonso. Like I said, I'm not convinced that he's nailed on this season, but if you are, he might be the pick of the bunch.

Far be it for me to disagree, but ... 😀

Alonso's striking prowess has been exaggerated, while his defensive skills are sorely lacking.

I accept that he is always up there, but we are approaching Christmas, while Chelsea are excelling at the CL.

I think Azipilicueta is a better bet.

      Nice work, lad

Contemplating having one after GW8 but Alonso means i have to go lighter either in midfield or attack, which doesnt seems like worth it, Azpi will be almost rotation immune, as Alonso could, and i say could be rested in the odd game or two, Zappa could play there, fullbacks from italy can play on both sides, it seems to be inherent in their DNA-)

You get what you pay for with Luiz, a little less but none the less a CS he gets when Alonso gets it and the occasional goal on a corner or two may happen. It´s a matter of team structure imo you have to add to the maths-)

Azpilicueta assisting Morata 4 times in 4 league games is unbelievable - particularly when you consider the top assister-goalscorer combinations in the whole of last season linked up 6 times - Eriksen to Kane and Sigurdsson to Llorente.

Sometimes I wonder how much you can read into data like this. 4 times is incredible but we are working with a small data volume. If it was 40 times out of 60 games then there would be more to read into it. It is like the Capoue stat from last year regarding 4 goals in 6 games but the shots record was unsustainable. Chances Azpi is creating for Morata would be the stat you may want to review to see if it is just lucky that the chances have come off.

        1. Ludo
          • 10 Years

Here's what we know - Azpilicueta has created 6 chances in the league this season - all of them for Morata, 5 were Big Chances, and 4 resulted in a goal.

Those chances had an average xG of 0.35 - in other words, these were quality chances, that an average player would be expect to convert 35% of the time - Morata converted them 67% of the time, scoring 4 where an average player would have scored 2.

Morata is a quality finisher, and may well continue to outscore his xG, as Kane and Lukaku did last season. However, this rate of 2 goals from Azpi assists every 3 games is definitely unsustainable! However, Azpi creating all of his chances for Morata doesn't make it seem like a coincidence, and it's not fortunate that he's picked up assists, given the quality of service he's providing. You can expect them to continue to link up well, on the evidence so far.

Capoue scored 4 goals in the first 5 games last season, having taken 7 shots. However, none of these shots were Big Chances, and they had an average xG of 0.05 - meaning they would typically be converted 5% of the time.

          Capoue's 4 goals from 7 shots was a 1043% percentage increase on his 0.35 xG. Morata's 4 goals from 6 shots created by Azpilicueta was a 91% increase on his 2.09 xG - that's a big difference!

          1. Ludo
            • 10 Years
            6 years, 7 months ago

Kane last season managed a 46% increase on his xG, and Lukaku managed a 50% increase. Morata himself managed a 58% increase for Real Madrid - if he kept up that rate for those 6 chances created by Azpilicueta, he'd have scored 3.3 goals instead of 4 (impossible, I know).

Even if Capoue were a Morata-level finisher in terms of outscoring his xG, though, you'd have expected him to score 0.6 goals instead of 4 - we're not dealing with the same levels of sustainability.

Fantastic work Ludo. Much appreciated as ever.

What worries me about Chelsea is the lack of discipline. Red cards galore, particularly at the back, and Alonso should have been sent off in two (or fully a third) of the matches he has played in so far. I hope they tighten up on this because they are silly/dangerous/petulant offences rather than, for example, professional fouls.

This is great analysis Ludo and it reaffirms what many of us feel about Alonso.

I do want to add a ceveat on Alonso.

Chelsea did not have CL last year and so, played Alonso week in and out. But with CL commitments this year, wingback's minutes are more likely to be managed than a established CB.

Alonso was hooked off at 58th minute in the last GWk for yellow card or CL reasons or both - you cant expect him to run up and down the pitch for 180 mins every week. However, someone like Cahill or Azpi can be relied upon to play 180 mins every week. PS: I think Luiz is more suspect to rotation than Cahill.

Hey Ludo - just want to comment you once again on a good post. Appreciate the way you are approaching the game.

Think the only concern for me is how Alonso’s stats have fallen off in the last few games. He’s still a class player but at his price I would need him to hit 5.3 ppg at least. Certainly achievable but doesn’t leave much room for error. Leaning Azpi atm

    Sorry, bottomed out.

I was all set to have a punt this week and wildcard in the Int Break but I think I might just stick and save my transfer for next week and wildcard at a later date. What do you think?

Hi all. Considering to wildcard over the IB.

    Begovic (Elliot)
    Jones Cedric Davies (Stones Mason)
    Mkhi Ramsey Alli Brady (Carroll)
    Kane Jesus Firmino

    Which route would you go?

    1) Wilcard over the IB and spend my free transfer for GW7 on:
    a) Lacazette for Jesus
    b) Bellerin/Kolasinac for Stones and bench Brady

    2) Save transfer and do e.g. Silva + Morata for Alli + Firmino ahead of GW8

    Cheers

If they are about to rise and there is no way of doing it once they do and you are planning to keep them long term.

Generally though, it's a bad idea as you need a cleansheet just to break even.

If you thought Ben Davies would start but then it turns out he's benched and you've got rid of Bertrand for a 4 point hit and it ruins your season.

did last week for monreal, got the points back and have him for good fixture this week.
Figured he would get at least one CS out of two games, with chance of baps. Was pretty sure if I didn't my other defenders would get 1-2 points. As it turned out they both got 6 last week, so at moment I am 3 points worse off but would think I have good chance of getting them back this week.
Situations like this are usually only time I consider it.

So Eriksen's price reset to 0% after this quote is interesting. It's really interesting how sometimes flags get removed immediately and sometimes they don't.

"Eriksen is not 100 per cent today [Thursday] "but we hope tomorrow he'll be feeling good and will be available for selection." #COYS

I hate it just because of the price changes, nothing else and sometimes it seems it's selective. That's my main problem. They should separate price changes with flags and I'm all up for flagging/unflagging to let people know there's a doubt or not.

Let's say you want a player (that is flagged) and he's about to drop and they remove the flag even if there's still not enough justification that he's 100% available for selection and his price resets for that reason. Therefore you can not buy him for reduced price. It can also be said if you're waiting for a player to rise in price and to bank the profit and he's flagged when he shouldn't be and people start to sell him.

Probably it's just me but I do find TV quite important, too. It is what it is. I'll just have to get over it. 🙂 🙂

I was planning to sell for Vardy this week, but the Vardy news will keep him in the team for this GW.

If he starts, which I think he should, he is a good option. I think it only makes sense taking him out for a fit Vardy, or upgrading to a premium option.
