Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 9

There may be one match remaining in Gameweek 8, but we’re already thinking ahead to the next set of fixtures with the launch of our latest Captain Poll.

After 56% of Fantasy Premier League managers earned just four points from their chosen captain at the weekend, many of us will be desperate for improved returns next time out.

Manchester City’s relentless attack is likely to occupy many Fantasy managers’ plans ahead of Burnley’s visit, given that Pep Guardiola’s troops have served up an incredible 28 goals this season, including 17 in their last three at the Etihad.

While the Clarets may have only shipped six goals, the underlying statistics suggest they have been fortunate, having conceded more shots than any other team.

Gabriel Jesus (10.7) produced a brace and netted maximum bonus points against Stoke on Saturday. Already more than 84,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have transferred in the six-goal Brazilian for the Clarets’ encounter.

But his pitch time remains a caveat – Saturday’s 62-minute outing was the longest he’s managed in front of his own fans this season.

Sergio Aguero (11.5)’s return to the bench against Stoke, after suffering a rib injury that has seen his ownership plummet to 7.4%, could reduce Jesus’ minutes further.

With the same number of goals as Jesus, as well as three assists, the Argentine looks set to garner attention, particularly if he proves his fitness with a Champions League appearance against Napoli midweek.

In total we have put forward six Sky Blues options for consideration, including a quartet of midfielders. Of these Raheem Sterling (8.1) may emerge with the most votes given his 15-point haul against Stoke on the back of two assists and a sixth goal of the season.

Sterling has tended to be rested for his side’s Champions League encounters, while being preserved for Premier League action, which goes in his favour. The England winger has made the first XI each time he has been available since Gameweek 3 and lasted the full 90 minutes on four occasions.

Unsurprisingly, Sterling is this week’s most popular transfer target, with more than 107,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Aguero’s return may threaten Leroy Sane (8.4)’s pitch time should he be fielded in tandem with Jesus. But this season the City winger has proved to be a more than capable impact man, having earned three double-digit FPL points hauls, scored four times and assisted a further three across his four starts and three substitute appearances.

City’s two chief creators 17.7% owned Kevin De Bruyne (10.0) and David Silva (8.5), who sits in 26.7% of teams, should also prosper in our poll. Both have started every league match so far and earned 11 assists between them, as well as a goal apiece.

The most likely challenger to City assets for the summit is set to be Romelu Lukaku (11.8), who travels to a Huddersfield Town side that has shipped seven in their last four, including four in their previous home encounter, against Spurs in Gameweek 6.

While the Belgian was restricted to just one shot at Anfield, he is likely to get more opportunities against the Terriers. Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool was the only time he has failed to score away from home in the league this season.

As well as Manchester United, another side to disappoint in Gameweek 8 was Chelsea, who lost 2-1 away to Crystal Palace.

A home tie with Watford this Saturday looks the perfect match for the Blues to bounce back, with their top scorer Alvaro Morata (10.2) likely to attract interest if he returns from injury for the midweek Champions League encounter with Roma. Six goals and two assists should ensure he earns more votes than team-mate Eden Hazard (10.6), who has yet to deliver an attacking return across his five appearances since his return.

Interest in Harry Kane (12.8) may be muted after he failed to break down Bournemouth’s defence at Wembley at the weekend.

His toils at Spurs’ temporary home – where he is yet to score in the league – is a major concern ahead of Liverpool’s visit and already more than 28,000 FPL managers have moved him out.

Yet Liverpool are unlikely to arrive at Wembley and put up a rearguard action. In addition, they have already conceded 11 times away from home, the joint highest along with Crystal Palace, West Ham and Stoke.

Wilfried Zaha (6.7), who scored against Chelsea on Saturday and proved inspirational as his side earned their first win of the season, is among the differential armband options.

Fielded as the central striker against the champions, Zaha makes a trip to Newcastle next. Despite showing resilience so far, only three teams have allowed more shots in home matches this season.

And Tammy Abraham (5.7) is another one to consider in light of his double for Swansea at home to Huddersfield.

The Chelsea loanee has claimed over 66,000 new owners as he entertains a Leicester City side that’s shipped seven goals in four road trips.

Encouragingly, Abraham has bagged 21 points in his last two at the Liberty Stadium.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 8 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Very strong lineup. If you fancy it, there's always the Kane/JesusorKun switcheroo open for you for 2 fixtures. But you could easily save.

I feel like I've been excommunicated by the Pope as I'm one Jesus behind everyone else this week.

Luckily, I have Lacazette as a tradeable asset... am thinking of putting Kun in and captaining him, though! Depends on UCL weds.

I have Lacazette. I think I need to get rid there. Sadly not quite enough juice unless I remove Salah for Silva, which seems a bit of a nonsensical exercise given the high ownership of Dilvs anyway 🙂
But yeah if I had my WC it'd be different for sure, can totally see where you're coming from.

          no he´s not joking

at Anfield they are actually pretty good both in terms og goals leaked, 1 in 4 home matches is actually better than most teams. Stats also backing this, big chances allowed is one of the lowest in the league.

Away it seems more volatile, but vs the better teams (top 6) they seemed to be ok last year away too. Apart from that City mauling and that crazy Arsenal game they were pretty decent in the other away matches, i think one goal in each of them

add that Spurs looks weak at "home" and every team that visits upping their performance i think that assuming Spurs to score a lot of goals would be unrealistically to be fair.

Spurs have one day less to prepare and Real Madrid is quite another package than Maribor.

When everyone is back and fit, who is your likely strike force going forward?

I will end up with Aguero - Morata - Kane I suspect.

Never wanted a big 3 and am happy with Vardy at the moment, but going forward that is where the points seem to be and was happy to downgrade Alli to enable this in the upcoming weeks.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Early captaincy thoughts

This looks like being one of the trickiest weeks for the captaincy.

Those with Lukaku face an on paper easy choice - but are they potentially missing out against the prolific City options?

Those looking at a City option. Will rotation fears stop you? Does a particular Citizen appeal - Jesus perhaps or Sterling - should he be benched again in Europe.

And what of Poor Kane - unable to score at 'home'. With bus parking proving effective at Wembley- will even Jurgen Klopp bring a bus along - after all no one expected Bournemouth to turn defensive yet they did to great effect.

Who are you captaining this week and what midweek news are you waiting for before you make your decision?

You have to target the number 3 when you captain a defender.
That is 3 games, so I have 2 left. Should get me 32 points in the next game.

It's true that Kane struggles when teams shut up shop - but this seems to be an area in which Liverpool struggle. They have no bus to park. I am looking forward to a very open attacking game in which two sides attempt to outscore each other.

I don't own Lukaku so has to be Jesus. Could easily get benched or subbed early but Kane hasn't shown anything to warrant captaincy at home. Until he does I will stick with him for solely away.

How many goals do we expect City to score against Burnley? Unlike Stoke they know how to park the bus, even away this year. I expect 2-3 goals to City, but not 5-6.

For GW 8 I had the armband on Sterling for 12 days and chickened up to put it on Kane after the unanimous Scoutcast captain pick.
For GW 9 the armband is back on Sterling. What will be my excuse when I'll put it on Lukaku come Friday?

Probably Lukaku - so all of you get on Kane. I've come to accept he will haul when I don't captain him and vice versa.

I'm surprised that nobody is considering the Burnley factor when they are mentioning City captaincy calls. This is a Clarets side who took points from Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs & Everton- all away from home. They've also conceded just 6 goals this season, with the Chelsea game the only time they've conceded more than 1 goal.

More than that, Everton (who are supposedly in terrible form) set up to defend & almost managed to halt City's goals- meaning there is potential for a defensive team to derail their progress.

While Man City are clearly in good form, not respecting the defensive prowess of the Clarets may come back to haunt us.

Didn't Jonty roll out a stat about how Burnleys defence conceded most shots in the box than most teams?

Makes their defensive resolve sound a little fortunate, conceded shots in the box to City and you're probably losing 3 or 4 nil in this form.

        1. Vinnie Rodrigues
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 6 months ago

I feel that stat doesn't tell the full tale though. Of those chances, Burnley's defence have blocked 62 shots on goal in their 8 PL games. They are very much an iron curtain defence who invite pressure & thrive on a 'none-shall-pass' mentality, which opponents frequently find quite frustrating.

          1. Freddo
            • 6 Years
            6 years, 6 months ago

That may be so but they are about to meet an attacking force like no other, for all their blocked shots, City's goal difference of +25 is more frightening to gamble against.

Was going to bring Lukaku in to C but I'm not sure they'll run riot against Hudds.

It's after a European week where teams can be sluggish, Hudds will be up for it, can see them being in United's faces and United having to match it, United are not Spurs when it comes to attacking so can see a different game to when Spurs went there.

United to grind out a win rather than blow them away, this will be Hudds Cup Final so expecting a big effort.

So, with that in mind, if he don't play 90 mins in Europe, I'll back a red hot City striker at home, Jesus it will be with Kane as a plan B, Spurs and Liverpool could be an end to end classic.

Gonna see how tonight goes but i'm thinking

    Vardy --> Jesus
    then

    Thoughts?

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 9

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 8:30am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 9am by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

    What to do with Bavies?
    Pros :
    - probably one of the best value defenders
    - Tottenham are quite tight at the back, and with his attacking potential, plenty of hauls possible

    Cons :
    - bad short term fixtures
    - risk of being rotated with hard fixtures around short term. ( I guess he plays 90 min in both real Madrid games and liv/manu/Arsenal.. Which means he'd be rested in the easier PL games against CP and WBA)
    - not nailed long term with rose back.

    Who to replace him with?

    1. Jarnathan
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 6 months ago

Keep until real rotation shows Poch's intent.

There aren't any other options as good in the same price range - and as City and Chelsea showed this weekend, their players are struggling with clean sheets (City simply outscore opponents and Chelsea are missing key players)

I wouldn't do that - Coutinho looks great for GWK 10 - you'll kick yourself at missing out on his pts then.

City attack is great but they have lots of options - Sterling, Sane, Silva etc all capable of mathing or even beating Jesus' score.

They are all so good that its hard to home in on one City asset, especially if it means the sort of sacrifices you are planning.
