Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Goalkeepers

With ten days remaining until domestic action resumes, we’ve taken time out to update our Watchlist rankings ahead of a hectic winter period.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist rankings offer mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Our analysis gets underway with a look at the main contenders in our latest goalkeeper standings.

Burnley’s Nick Pope moves to the top of our reckoning ahead of four home fixtures (SWA ARS WAT STK) and trips to Bournemouth and Leicester over the next six Gameweeks.

Since replacing the injured Tom Heaton early in Gameweek 4, Pope has served up four clean sheets in seven starts and has conceded more than one goal on a single occasion – away to Man City’s attack in Gameweek 9.

The Clarets’ stopper offers a steady source of points, too. He’s supplied at least one save point in seven of his eight league outings, with an average of 18.3 minutes per save quicker than any goalkeeper.

Also the number one stopper for bonus points, with a total of seven to his name already, Pope’s price of 4.5 looks outstanding value for money right now. Over 24,000 have snapped him up since last weekend, yet he’s still owned by just 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Clarets’ defenders Ben Mee (4.5) and Stephen Ward (4.9) offer attacking alternatives as routes into a rearguard with five clean sheets and just nine goals against – only the two Manchester clubs and Spurs can better them for either statistic.

Despite a premium price tag, David De Gea’s appeal as a fire and forget option between the posts continues to gain momentum.

The Man United number one has registered eight clean sheets in the first 11 Gameweeks – at least three more than any other keeper.

De Gea is also profiting from save points, earning at least one on as many as seven occasions already.

Indeed, he’s producing a save every 30 minutes so far this term – quicker than last season’s average of 40.9 minutes – and has already matched his total of five bonus points from 2016/17.

The top scoring keeper on 65 points, the Spaniard is second only to Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (67 points) among all defensive options.

He’s also the second most popular player in the FPL game – only team-mate Romelu Lukaku (47.7% to 40.5%) has garnered more owners.

With Phil Jones now up to 5.5, there’s very little to separate him with the De Gea (5.7) in price ahead of four favourable fixtures (NEW BHA wat BOU) in the next six.

United have testing back-to-back encounters with Arsenal and Man City in Gameweek 15-16, though Jose Mourinho’s bus parking exploits against title rivals may well boost De Gea’s points potential.

Julian Speroni is our favoured budget keeper of choice as Newcastle’s Rob Elliot slips a little in our estimations.

Costing a mere 4.0 and sitting in 3% of squads, the veteran has started each of the last four league matches for Crystal Palace, whose upcoming defensive schedule is regarded as the most appealing over the next six Gameweeks in our season ticker.

Roy Hodgson’s men are set run that looks vital to their bid to beat the drop – they boast four strong home fixtures (EVE STK BOU WAT) as well as trips to Brighton and West Brom over this period.

Encouragingly, since moving to a 4-4-2 in Gameweek 8, Palace have allowed a mere three big chances – no side have conceded fewer. That’s all the more impressive when you consider they faced Chelsea and Spurs, restricting both to just a single goal.

Meanwhile, a total of 19 shots conceded in the box during that stretch is ranked third best in the top-flight and suggests they could soon be delivering the clean sheets.

At 4.7, Scott Dann is slightly more expensive but, having scored eight times in the last two seasons, offers a substantial threat in and around the opposition box.

Elliot, meanwhile, has struggled for returns in recent weeks. Still priced at 4.2, he’s mustered just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks and picked up only three save points across that period.

Trips to Man United and Chelsea now arrive in the next four, while the Magpies also host a Watford side that are second only to Man City for away goals (12 to 14) so far.

Second only to De Gea for ownership (26.7%) in goal, the Newcastle stopper still offers three decent fixtures (wba LEI EVE) to profit from over the upcoming six.

Bournemouth are another team who have struggled to keep out their opponents this season, managing just two clean sheets to date.

Yet, like Palace, they have reason for optimism thanks to an eye-catching schedule (HUD swa BUR SOT cry) that is rated as the most appealing for defensive points over the next five Gameweeks.

That brings Asmir Begovic into out thinking.

Priced at 4.5, the Bosnian is second only to Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski for saves (40 to 42) over the opening 11 rounds of fixtures and has earned nine save points as a result.

Indeed, he’s just one point behind the pricier Charlie Daniels (4.8), by 36 to 37, though the left-back could also be in profit over those fixtures thanks to his raids down the flank.

Simon Mignolet earns a place in our update thanks mainly to Liverpool’s excellent home form.

The Reds remain defensively dire on the road – shipping a league-high 16 goals – yet at Anfield, they have conceded just a single goal so far. Only Man United – with no goals against – boast a better record in front of their own supporters.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already kept out Arsenal and Man United at home and have just one troublesome match (SOT CHE EVE WBA SWA LEI), against Chelsea in Gameweek 13, in their next six Anfield fixtures.

They play four times at home in six, with trips to Stoke and Brighton also on their short-term agenda.

The Belgian has struggled for save points, though, earning just four to date, and, at a price of 4.9, there may be cheaper attacking options such as Alberto Moreno (4.5) in Klopp’s defence.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski (4.6) and Brighton’s Mat Ryan (4.5) remain valid options in the budget bracket, with both serving up more points (45 and 41) than any defensive team-mate.

Number one for saves (42) this season, the former has four decent looking match-ups in the next five (bur BOU stk WBA).

Ryan, meanwhile, has four strong home encounters (STK CRY BUR WAT) in the next eight Gameweeks allied with a trip to fellow promoted side, Huddersfield.

Again, though, there are viable options in the Seagull’s defence, with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy impressing for both goal threat and clearances, blocks and interceptions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Cheers for the feedback mate, not convinced by Alonso this year , Azpil and Morata seem to be on the same wavelength.

Haven’t done it yet... waiting to see if injuries happen over the break. If Kun got injured I’d probably keep Jesus and do Kola downgrade and Carroll upgrade

Do we think Klaven at 4.3 is now a viable option especially with Liverpool’s kind run of fixtures over the next few weeks. Alternatively is Lovren going to get his place back after the international break?

I can see the attraction of Moreno on here, he's quite attacking. But I really don't think Klaven or Lovern are FPL assests worth considering.
If its a 4.3m defender, I'm really looking at chilwell over the coming weeks. Puel started him as a winger vs everton a few weeks ago... would be amazing if he held that position

        very true.
But I'd definitely wait and see what happens with him, its not even the 4.3m price, its the fact he basically played as a midfielder and classed as a defender.
Leicester aren't amazing but to be fair to them, they're back to a better defence now with injured players returning, and Puel is a good manager in terms of defence.

I'm probably keeping Aguero which means Pope in goal and current thinking is
          Jones Daniels Mee Moreno Chilwell

Dann is tempting but I'm not sure I'd be confident to play him over the other three in any immediate fixture.

          1. Hurricane Gilbert
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

Ah. I currently own Aguero but because of rotation and tactics I'm not sure if he's worth the money over Morata. City play quite similar to Pool in the sense that the wingers (Sane and Sterling and Salah and Mane) are the most advanced and dangerous attackers.

Dann or Daniels is a toss up for me. I just think people underestimate Palace and Hodgson and overestimate Howe and Bournemouth. Chilwell will defo be rotated if he plays OOP, and risk is he lose his place quickly at that position. Not convinced on him, and Pope is a transfer waiting to happen.

            1. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
              • 8 Years
              6 years, 5 months ago

Yeah that's my concern with Aguero - I wonder if Morata + £ Is better but I'm scared if being in a situation where I can't upgrade to Kun/Lukaku if I need to. I guess Chelsea's fixtures are about as good as they could be.

I agree about Bournemouth, but I think the next five fixtures are incredibly good. Daniels over Dann is purely a fixture thing for me.

With Pope, I think I'll be able to find a transfer as and when.

@Thimothyjs Actually I'm more convinced on Morata than on Kane atm. So Kane offers flexibility so I will be able to downgrade him if Spurs continue to struggle at Wembley, which I fear they'll do.

I don't think Christensen is that risky of a pick to be fair. Conte has praised him openly and the fans love Christensen. Luiz is nowhere near the team and I expect it to stay like that because Conte doesn't forgive him easily.

Luiz refused to sit on the bench when he got subbed against Roma in the CL, he also openly criticised Conte and god knows what has happened behind closed doors. Conte is a very authoritative manager who doesn't forget nor forgive very easily. Conte has been very quick to label Christensen as the present and the future of Chelsea FC, and the fans also love him. He will be a steal for 5,4 and he's a viable option to me.

Rudiger is there too though. I would expect some rotation in the back three even if Luiz is out of the picture. Mind you it could be Cahill who misses out from time to time.

He is but Christensen will be ahead in the pecking order imo, which Conte showed when he relied on Christensen instead of Rudiger. And as you say, with a strong bench you don't need him to play every game.

Went for Daniels, but after studiyng stats over the next 5 gmw's I have comed to the conclusion:
          1: Moreno
          2: Dann
          3: Daniels

Its close tho and stats are stats. Maybe Moreno got little rotation risk involved, you can argue that CP have still not got a CS.

I probably went for the safer option with Daniels, more people who will have him so I reduce the variance with that pick.

Really great team tho, not a big fan of Sterling would probably have tried to get Silva in for him.

@Wengerisdone Cheers mate. I like differentials and therefore I want to go for Dann over Daniels. Moreno got a rotation risk for sure, but that's why I have a strong bench. Can't ignore the value of Sterling and he will always be more explosive than DSilva, who also will start to get rotated during the congestion.

I like Sané a lot and I think he’s the most nailed of the front 3 City attackers.

Not to my liking, if I'm beeing honest. But can be a lot better with small tweeks

DDG could be Pope and save alot, rotates well with Elliot.
      Christensen, not nailed.
Moreno...don't trust de Liverpool defence personally

      To dodgy defence imo.
      Midfield looks good.
Attack to...not sure if Niasse will start though.

the problem your facing is one we all get sucked into... we want all the current preforming players and we want them now.
you'll convince yourself if you take the -12 then all is fine and you'll be happy to leave it.
problem is the form and fixtures change, and all of a sudden you want different players.
try to be patient, plan your transfers carefully. -4 and even -8 are necessary at times but mainly due to injuries.

      good luck

Need to free up 0.4 and not sure whether to do Flappy to Speroni or Atsu to Carroll?

Is Speroni likely to keep his place?

Speroni seems nailed. If those are the transfers you're making you must have a good squad

bench is tricky. To be fair all 3 unlikely to score much more than 2 but Stones has been getting up for set pieces lately. hard to stay with any certainty

        Yep solid moves!

Can I ask why you’re shipping Luiz though? Do you think hes lost his place to Christensen?

Luiz has fallen out with conte who says he may not have a future at the club.

He needs to exit my team.

Think I'll take the hit cos there will always be something more pressing that I'll want to do..

Thoughts on Christensen instead of Azpil to save a bucket load of cash?

Contes comments on Luiz were very daming. Azpil will go back to centre 3 once Moses returns so similar position for less.

I'm thinking Christensen is a good shout over Luiz.

Reading articles about Luiz and Conte having a fall out since Sept. Not as bad is the Costa saga but I think the writing is on the wall.

Christensen if he starts this GW and has a good game, I think he is a good shout.

Elliot for more save points possibly but both poor options this week.

Will look to get Pope in after Foster soon

He won't nail down a position when Gomez is equally good/poor. They will rotate frequently during the congestion.

        Christensen

If I had to pick one it would be Christensen... I’m coming around to the idea of a £5.4M Chelsea Defender!

have to hold my hand up to punting on Fabregas gw8... really regretted it first few weeks as his price point is awkward to move him for some else...
however, watched the game last weekend with Kante back and it has made such a difference to him, he was getting forward a lot more and the stats have really improved. he seems to be nailed for now and potentially could return so I'm happy to hold..
        BUT
if i was back again, from the choice above I'd go Christensen.
mainly because if it goes wrong 5.4m isn't a bad amount to have in your pocket to replace a defender.
        hope that helps

Cheers for your thoughts! Yeah I actually brought in Fab last round - he was the compromise pick for getting Mane and Kane in. If they keep playing that formation things could work out for him. But the temptation of shifting to a Salah/Mane/Sane/Sterling midfield is strong...

          1. Cityzen Kane
            • 7 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

            true.
I've used him as a compromise for this:

            Alonso - jones - walker - Davies
            Fabregas - Salah - Sterling - Richarlison
            Kane - Morata

kind of regretting the defence, but gonna give Alonso another 2 weeks, then think about downgrading and upping the mids.
to be honest tho, I want to see how Pogba goes, cause he's less of a stretch in budget compared to alli, mane, sane etc.

bottom line, happy to hold Fabregas a while longer. Goal next weekend and he'll stay a while longer

i think you are safe for a while now, market has stalled now so just some random falls and maybe one or two risers. Could ofc be Silva but seeing as Cedric stills survive there is achance Silva does to
