The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Really want Pogba in, think my options are
    A) Sterling/Silva > Pogba
    B) Richarlison & Jones > Pogba & 4.7m
    C) Choupo-Moting & Jones > Pogba & 4.0m

    Rest of team is:

    Pope | Elliot
    Alonso | Jones | Daniels | Kiko | Naughton
    Salah | Sterling | Silva | Richarlison | Choupo-Moting
    Kane | Morata | Crouch

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Gameweek 12 – Lessons Learned

Here’s a couple to get the discussion started

    Pogba pushes case for 3-5-2

Many managers, including those at the top of our Hall of Fame and Members league, have now opted for a cheap striker third striker to allow greater flexibility with their formations.

In particular this frees up money to invest in midfield. Hall of fame number one Jay has had great success recently with a 3-5-2 formation and those who used that in Gameweek 12 profited again with Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea midfielders returning.

This week, with two games still to go, five midfielders achieved double-digit returns. Of these Pogba is most notable. Now with three goals and four assists from five starts his 8.0 price tag looks laughably low. A price lock until next weekend he remains a bargain for those who are patient.

Given the array of choice in midfield, at a kind price tag for many – is 3-5-2 with the flexibility to occasionally play a cheap third striker in a three-man front line - now the key to success?

Kane is looking surplus to requirements.

So far this week just two strikers have achieved double digit returns and they are both budget options - Niasse and Wilson.

Morata, Lukaku and Jesus all returned to keep their owners happy, but once again Kane blanked in a fixture he was widely expected to score in.

We’ve had all sorts of theories about Kane – but is it time to admit that he can no longer be trusted with the armband? And if so, is his 12.8 price tag simply too much to have in your team, especially with the high returns and strong value being offered by other strikers and midfielders?

What key lessons have you learned this Gameweek so far?

I must admit I'm not a fan of the strategy of 'trust your guts' . Doesn't really mean anything.

In this case you had a 50 50 call and it went right because you presumably looked at Aguero's minutes played - especially away, Chelsea's fixture list and Morata's form. That's not your intestines or liver telling you that - that's good Fantasy management. 😉

Pogba's performance overrated for me. Thought Rashford, Martial and Lukaku were just as good.

Hazard was the standout - he looks up for it now.

I would be looking at a five in midfield of Salah - Hazard - Richarlison - Sane and RLC / Zaha.

I've been burned by Kane many times too. Why I went for Lukaku. I know he's not explosive but at least I'm more confident I'll get something. Also he's predictable - scores against poor teams, especially at home.

Kane is just too unpredictable to captain for the foreseeable future.

          Agree with that but I look at the options to get him in and they all look like such a compromise;
          A) Eriksen out
          B) Silva out and downgrade DDG
          C) Silva out and downgrade Alonso

Tough choice out of the 3 above. I would lean towards A but the fixtures scream don't do it. If I wait I won't be able to afford that move next week. Punishing

            I have Azpi and Morata.

Probably will bring in Alonso or Hazard before GW14. Havent decided yet.

Not sure which double up will pay more dividends - Azpi and Alonso, or Hazard and Morata?

I had Haz and brought in Morata and Alonso last week which saved me since I still don’t have Salah. Azpilicueta and Alonso is a bit too pricey for me for two defenders. 1 goal against and you have to hope for attacking returns.

Daft comparison. Kane is the most expensive player in the game. Hazard isn’t even close to being it.

Main reason I avoided Gomez/Moreno. They’ll get rotated for the odd easy fixture which is really annoying.

Have Mee, Duffy and Lascelles at the moment. Will be looking to get Azpi in for Kiko and then I’ve got a decent CB defence for December.

Yeah but he has been playing FB and his team is in the CL. He isn’t as nailed as some of the CBs for the lower teams that are good defensively (Mee, Duffy, Lascelles). I want the security of knowing that as many players as possible in my squad are completely nailed options.

I do too. Flexibility is the key - those managers that give themselves the option to play 4-4-2, 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 when the fixtures and players suit should do well.

Having four good defenders available for selection each week is a smart move,

Lessons learned: don't base your decisions solely on the landscape of the previous gameweek, you have to be one step ahead. This week I sold Abraham for Niasse (benched) and went 3-5-2 on my wildcard. Now everyone is talking about 3-5-2 and I'm nicely setup. (Unsubtle brag).

Something I did too ahead of this week. Murray in my case. Happy to bench him, happy to play him too. I'll be fielding 3-5-2 next week but if Lindelaugh is playing I'm tempted to field the veteran Brighton man 🙂

He is always first choice when fit. But at the age of 73 fitness is the issue. 😉

He will be prone to rotation but that's what you sign up for with cheap strikers - same applies to Wilson (afobe and Defoe) Abraham (Bony) and Niasse (DCL etc).

One lesson that emerged was that some magic beans can be trusted, and others can't. Loftus cheek can be started in your team as a 4th or 5th mid. However tom Carroll missed his first game of the season yesterday, indicating its probably time to ditch him soon.

Kane bangs in a brace against West Brom and he’s a must have again! Not sure there is much to be debated for me, one look at his history tells me all I need to know. Basically a season keeper barring injury/suspension

I still think Kane is a season keeper. You just don't know when he's going to score but he'll still be the leagues top scorer if he stays fit.

things have changed around lots this season

my front 7 of Sane, Salah, Sterling (maybe to Pogba), Gross, Kane, Morata and Wilson looks, on paper, good enough to leave for a month

in reality I know something will happen to cause me to tear it up again soon

this season key lesson is don't get set on any formation, system, players (bar maybe Salah) - be ready to change

He got 7 of his goals in the last two games of last season when he was taking shots from everywhere and their opponents were on the beach. He won’t have that luxury for months.

The key leasons is must have strong bench and have strong midfield, cause they have more pts for goals, have pts for cs too. Start of the season I have 2x4.5m mid and doesn't work well, now I'm settle with 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 formation and have budget third striker.

    22. Freddo

Jonty, the lesson to be learned is that constant flip flopping when certain areas score points is not the way to go.

Going heavy in any area just leads to this on a weekly basis, balance across all areas allows you the flexibility to not be constantly behind whichever trend follows.

Those who insisted on one extra premium striker are now seeing why many said it was a poor tactic because the midfielders will also score as will the defenders, Alonso and Kyle Walker (who matched Morata) yesterday waved at all those who believe expensive defenders are a thing of the past.

After 12 weeks you can not get away from the fact that you have 15 players who can score you points not just 3 or 4.

        I agree.

The lesson above all each and every week is to be flexible and have a balanced squad - so that each week you can field the best set of players whatever the formation.

When I say 3-5-2 is looking good - that should be through having a strong 15 - so include a third striker you are also happy to play, a fifth mid you are happy to play and a good defence to allow four to play each week.

        1. Freddo
          • 6 Years

There's some decent cheap options in every area that can be played now which allows strong flexibility.

          Mee at 4.5 as a 4th defender
          RLC at 4.5 as a 5th midfielder
          Niasse at 4.9 as a 3rd striker

These are all players that could easily be played, RLC at H to Stoke next week is a good example when Mee has Arsenal.

Really don't see any reason to max out any area at the moment.

premium strikers remain inconsistent. unlikely to have a week when all 3 turn up. so pick 2 and get money into midfield.

man city still share the points amongst so many players.

Kane is like Kun in previous seasons. A lot of money and you're just sitting waiting for the big haul. Average it out and is he worth the extra 2m over Jesus, Morata with what that 2.3/4 m can get you elsewhere? Azpi/Alonso & Morata vs. Kane & a 4.5ish defender over next 8-10 GWs? Then you look Spurs next 12 !! fixtures and only Man City looks difficult.

You're still going to get weeks when 3 or 4 of the big sides are going to nail it and you want to change everything. FPL rule 1 - can't own everybody. Don't start these -8s/-12s taking out players from one big side to players from another.

Big lesson (particularly with heavy rotation likely). Don't ignore your bench order!!!!!!!
Every GW on here load of people saying player X is buried 3rd on my bench - when cheap defenders away at Man CIty/Liverpool etc. are 1st change

If there's one thing I learned last season that burned me hugely is that it's irrational to get caught up by the hype of one player. The fear factor of not owning Aguero/Kane this season has already caused people to tear up their teams for hits just because they're scared to not own them for the subsequent gameweek. It's a game of 11 players, not one, and the chances of that player punishing you relative to the overall score is low. We're seeing it happen now, people asking who they should switch out out of Sterling/Silva/Coutinho for Pogba. Lolwut? It makes no sense, this is not where your big points come from if you're transferring out a player who is just as likely to see returns.

        Precisely.

No offense to FFS team but their mentioning most weeks of a new "player" or "formation" that looks the most optimal would have me chasing my own tail if I didn't stick my guns and my own values and learnings from FPL.

And +1 re - Pogba. Overhyped and remember earlier when started well but then fizzed out?? Better options than him in a super-midfield choice this year.

Records (and curses) are made to be broken.

Kane didn’t score in a NLD. The most transferred in player scored two goals. Man U let in a goal at Old Trafford. (Morata scores a goal without (direct) assistance from Azpi...Azpicu...Dave.) Alonso scores the second of his 3 or 4 goals this season after no significant returns for 6 weeks.

If you wait long enough, every streak will end.

That last sentence is very true. I've had Firmino since GW4. He failed to score or assist in 6 matches but has since scored 8, 2 and 5 points.

Also, I've has Alonso since GW3 and he didn't score more than 2 points in GWs 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 but he's now scored 26 points in the last 3 gameweeks.

        Patience is a virtue.

I sold Kane in GW4 after he blanked at home to Burnley the previous week and sold him again in GW6 after he blanked at home to Swansea the previous week. He scored 26 points combined in gameweeks 4 and 6. The message is clear to me - do not sell Harry Kane. Brought him back in GW7 and he's staying in. He's had 64 shots so far this season, that's 22 more than the next best with Lukaku and Salah on 42. I'd be worried if I didn't have Kane in my team, a bit like I was if I didn't have Alexis Sanchez in my team last season.

Kane doesn’t look good, does he? Still not fully recovered after his injury, three blanks in a row, two more is on the cards (West Brom at home, Leicester away) before he has Watford away in gameweek 15, which looks like a great fixture for him. But £12.8 for five blanks in a row and then possibly a haul?

Kun did that a couple of seasons ago - people bailed and he gets a 5 goal haul. Not saying Kane will get a 5 goal haul but he does have the ability to do so.
Yesterday was probably the 1st time Kane looked off the pace and not likely to score.
Credit still has to go to a very good Arsenal performance.
Sides Spurs struggled at home with this season were generally in reasonable form. WBA aren't.
It still comes down to what you can do with the money whilst waiting for Kane to score.
If Kane hits form against WBA then the fixtures are outstanding until almost end of Jan except for 1 game against City.
Not sure there is a right answer for what to do with Kane. A special player but one who could score 3 or 15 in next 10 GWs.

Kane did this only last year and seems people have forgot it already.

C blanks against Hull and Burnley, skied pen agaisnt Southampton, loads on here (myself included) sold as his stats were on the slide, the following week he played Watford, scored a brace and went on a massive streak.

These are players bordering on being world class, they may not score every week but they have the ability to do so (or close to it)

I was at the game yesterday and he didn't look 100% fit to me, he still had his chances but Arsenal were so much better and turned up, can't read too much into it.

had exactly same situation with Kane - Hull & Burnley (c) etc. He scored one and missed the penalty.
People knee-jerked him out because of 2 blanks against weaker sides.
              Sold him.
Irony was he wasn't playing well against Watford then 1 went in. Watford fell to pieces (looked well on the way to relegation after that) Spurs scored 4?
Brought him back after Chelsea (when he was outstanding but didn't score). Captained for a home hat-trick - against ..... West Brom.
Other factor is last year this happened around Xmas congestion. With fixtures coming thick and fast people far more likely to knee-jerk. Taking Kane out now and spreading the funds may well make it difficult to get him back easily.

Move funds from forwards to defenders and midfielders? At the moment, Morata is the only forward I feel certain about. There’s been a lot of talk about 3-5-2; what about 4-5-1 with Morata up top?

Morata plus Niasse and Ayew up top could get me a midfield of Hazard, Salah, Sané, Silva and Pogba with Alonso and Otamendi in defence.

The problems are, of course, that it

          b) several transfers to go back if Agüero, Lukaku or Kane suddenly become essential.

Seems like points chasing to me.

Earlier in the season, having three premium strikers in a 4-3-3 was advised. Then, premium defenders and their importance was emphasized. During both these occasions, it was said that there wasn't much value in midfield. Now there's one week where several midfielders return and 3-5-2 is the best formation? What's next week's advice going to be, to go 3-4-3?

Why don't we just stick to a balanced formation and be patient? We don't get a wildcard every week.

      1. PocketZola
        • 6 Years

i only used 3-4-3 in gw1 and shifted to 442 whenever possible....this is my preference. 4-5-1 and changing to 5-4-1 is something im thinking of, by selling kane i have 8.3 mil to spend

4-5-1, 5-4-1 and 3-5-2 as the OP has mentioned aren't balanced formations.

In the first two, you're spending less on your forwards and in 3-5-2 you would have a cheap defence. If you're convinced the value is in midfield for the whole season, then by all means, go for it. But pondering over this every week based on the week's results and switching is pointless.

I have a 4-4-2 myself and I find it pretty balanced. Going 3 at the back this year just gives you a very cheap defence.

Exactly the same people banging the table for three premium strikers are now saying 3-5-2 is actually the way to go and next week the advise will change again.

It’s the same as soon as somebody hauls they’re “essential”. Kane was essential three weeks ago now he’s expendable. It changes every week less knee jerking is required.

I’ve got three premium and I’m happy to stick. I’ve tried to get as many teams main attacking threats as possible so I’ve got - Salah, Sanè, Richarlison, Kane, Lukaku, Morata. More than happy to be patient and see how that front 6 do should they stay injury and suspension free.

Surprised there is so much anger towards Kane but not Aguero. I think we should just agree Aguero is dead as an FPL asset especially with Xmas coming. Extremely expensive and his explosiveness can be matched by Sane, Sterling and even KDB sometimes as we have seen many times.

Dont take hits for a defender.

Took my 1st hit since GW2 to do mbemba > francis as had jones/ota/davies

Out of kane/kaku/morata/kun or jesus... i think you pick two & stick....all the strikers above will have ups & downs

Morata is the flavour of the week, however it was only a few weeks ago when everyone was saying how rubbish he is!

Everyones hating on kane...but as soon as he scores 2 everyone will want him back.

Focus on strong midfield & defence so they can pick up the slack when preimum strikers blank

Kane on form, with Spurs flying, can be relatively well trusted to deliver consistent and considerable hauls.

Kane coming back from an injury, with Spurs looking meh should be treated with caution.

Don’t trust Kane and captain him, when he’s recovering from injury. Don’t get swayed by the scoutcast, stick with own decision. Gut told me Niasse, fixtures, cheap in form scoring striker. Stuck with Tammy, now he’s injured.
      Woeful Swansea are relegation contenders.

Hazard is better player than morata and on penos. Short term punt on Wilson to afford him
Kane and Lukaku other strikers. May do lukaku to morata for free for their SWA NEW matches

What do you mean by "a price lock until next weekend" on Pogba?
I bought him right after the match in order to secure him at 8.0, as I expect him to rise significantly during this week.

Why does he have a price lock? and where am I supposed to get this information?
Really appreciate some solid info here.

All players that go from red flag directly to no flag have their price locked for 8 days. Price lock means that the price can’t change.

    Best premium option out these?

    A) Hazard (Have Morata)
    B) Alli (Have Kane)
    D) Coutinho (Have Salah)
    C) Pogba

With Pogaba I can have Alonso. With Hazard I need a 4.5m defender so the price does matter.

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

Trying to combine fixtures and form. Thinking:

    - 3 Chelsea (1 defender / GK, Hazard, Morata)
    - 3 City (1 defender / GK, 1 midfielder, 1 striker)
    - 1 Palace (Zaha or RLC)
    - 2 Liverpool (1 defender and Salah)
    - 1 Spurs (1 defender)

Sprinkle in a dash of Elliot (cheap GK), Burnely defender and Richarlison and it looks well set IMO.

      DDG - Elliot
      Naughton - Azpi - Mee - Dunk - Davies
      Salah - RLC - Richarlison - Hazard - Sane
      Morata - Jesus - (McBurnie)
