Scout Notes

European Scout Notes – Tuesday

Manchester City’s Tuesday teamsheet causes concern for Sergio Aguero owners, while a second-half shambles in Spain could have similar domestic repercussions for Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno.

Big-hitting Spurs duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli, however, find some much-needed form on a generally satisfactory night for English teams in Europe.

Here are the notes from last night’s three Champions League matches.

Aguero poised for another bench role

No fewer than six of this week’s current top 30 most sold players are from Man City as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers grow ever more tired of Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy.

The coach had made it clear that some of those who started last night’s Champions League tie with Feyenoord were unlikely to do the same come Sunday, away to Huddersfield Town.

So the 100,000+ who have acted early to ditch Sergio Aguero ahead of Gameweek 13 could be excused a moment of smugness as the Argentine played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 win over the Dutch.

But those who sold on David Silva (38,000+), Gabriel Jesus (18,000+) and Leroy Sane (17,000+) have no such luxury.

Of that trio, only the Brazilian striker made it onto the pitch – and that was after 64 minutes – as City were confirmed winners of Group F thanks to a late goal from Raheem Sterling.

All three look highly likely to start Sunday’s trip to Huddersfield and, in fact, only Silva is currently enduring a net transfer deficit ahead of what looks to be a plum away fixture.

The fate of Sterling, whose goal came from a fine give-and-go with Ilkay Gundogan, is less clear, while that of Kevin De Bruyne, who is enjoying an ownership increase this week, might well have been simplified by a caution picked up against the Dutch.

The midfielder has started every league and European match for City this season, but will now be suspended for the early December trip to Shakhtar Donetsk that completes their Group F commitments.

That fixture, a dead rubber for Guardiola’s men, is sandwiched between a visit from West Ham and a trip to Man United.

At the back, Guardiola went with a Nicolas Otamendi/Eliaquim Mangala central defensive partnership, which surely ensures Vincent Kompany’s start at the John Smith’s Stadium, with the Frenchman making way.

Guardiola can’t always be trusted when it comes to rotation, but Aguero’s full shift last night – and the fact that Jesus has started every away match in the league thus far – doesn’t bode well for the Argentine’s immediate prospects.

A reminder that on Monday, the City boss brought us this latest insight on his selection policy with his two central strikers, indicating that, with Bernard Mendy sidelined, he feels forced to choose between the pair.

“They [Aguero & Jesus] have a lot of games and they have to be ready. It is the toughest decision. When you have Mendy, he can play wide and the winger can go inside. Fabian Delph cannot do that. Without Mendy, Leroy Sane has to go wide, which is why they don’t play together.”

That quote is significant, not only for confirming the continued rotation of Aguero and Jesus, but also in reaffirming Sane’s status as almost “untouchable” in the starting XI while Mendy is ruled out.

The left-back is set to be sidelined until April, though Guardiola will doubtless move for cover in the January transfer window.

Sane’s absence from last night’s squad provides further evidence that Guardiola is protecting the German for the now higher priority Premier League fixtures.

Moreno awaits Sevilla consequences

Liverpool would have joined City as Champions League group winners with victory in Seville.

And 30 minutes into the match, that was most definitely on the cards as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to a brace from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane.

But a shambolic display the other side of the interval means that Jurgen Klopp’s men will now need to win their final Group E tie, at home to Spartak Moscow, to confirm top spot.

Liverpool’s blistering start in Spain, aided by assists from both goalscorers and Georginio Wijnaldum, should have had Klopp working out who to rest in early December, with his side facing a trip to Brighton and then the Merseyside derby either side of that match with the Russians.

Now, he might have to roll the dice in the Brighton fixture to ensure his best team is fit and firing for the two huge matches that follow.

One regular who might be missing regardless is left-back Alberto Moreno, who produced a second-half horror show on his return to his former club.

The Spaniard has started all but two of Liverpool’s league fixtures this season, and his 4.6 bargain basement price has prompted a doubling of his FPL ownership since Gameweek 9.

But Moreno has never been entirely dependable defensively and he was at fault for the first two of Sevilla’s comeback goals before James Milner replaced him on 63 minutes.

That prompted a lull in proceedings before Liverpool wasted good opportunities to seal the victory and their hosts punished them with a late equaliser.

As well as his price, Moreno’s appeal has lain in the Reds’ resilience at home – all five of their league clean sheets have come at Anfield.

A visit from Chelsea on Saturday evening will be a severe test of that obduracy, and Liverpool will then spend the next two Gameweeks on the road. Should Klopp look to try and shore things up at the back, the 4.5%-owned Moreno is the obvious scapegoat.

The return of Joe Gomez, coupled with Trent Alexander- Arnold’s impressive performance against Southampton, may also indicate that Klopp has tweaked his rotation policy at right-back. His selection against Chelsea will tell us more.

There are no such uncertainties up front.

Although Mohamed Salah experienced a rare barren match in which he squandered two excellent opportunities to score, Mane made it a goal and three assists since his Gameweek 11 return from injury, while Firmino now has three goals and two assists from his last four starts in all competitions.

Playmaker Philippe Coutinho had a quiet night and was replaced by Emre Can after 63 minutes, before Salah made way for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with three minutes left.

Big guns fire for Spurs

Spurs shook off their north London derby woes with a 2-1 win in Dortmund that confirmed top spot in Group H with a match to spare.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli struggled in the 2-0 loss at the Emirates, but both returned to form in a fine second-half comeback.

Alli set up his England colleague for the equaliser before repeating the trick as Son Heung-min curled home the winner.

Spurs will now entertain Apoel Nicosia in an early December dead rubber that should involve major changes in personnel, ensuring Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice team can start the trip to Watford and the home match with Stoke City that bookend the European tie.

Both Kane and Alli were subbed off towards the end of the match, replaced by Fernando Llorente and Mousa Dembele respectively, while Christian Eriksen played 85 minutes before Moussa Sissoko came on.

The Dane, however, experienced another blank – he’s neither scored nor assisted since Gameweek 8 – and he continues to leak owners, with more than 86,000 getting rid this week alone.

Kane and Alli have also seen their ownership dip, with the midfielder’s base dropping below the million mark for the first time this season ahead of the Arsenal defeat.

But their improved second-half showing might give managers pause for thought ahead of a home match with West Brom on Saturday.

Indeed, Spurs schedule from now until the end of January is a strong one, with a Gameweek 18 trip to Man City the only cloud on the horizon.

That could spare more turbulence in Kane’s ownership – he lost more than 620,000 managers prior to Gameweek 10, only to recoup most of them the following week – as our quest for a default captain option continues to be hampered by patchy form (three straight league blanks) and Aguero’s rotation issues.

    Jones, Sterling & Vardy -> Otamendi, Sané & C.Wilson (-4)?

    Pope, Elliott
    Jones, Bavies, Mee, Daniels, Dunk
    Salah, Sterling, Ramsey, Choupo-Moting, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Vardy.

Still got WC in back pocket if Wilson doesn't work out

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Best players for the upcoming rotation minefield.

With three set of fixtures over the next week rotation is inevitable.

How are you looking to deal with rotation. Are you looking to beef up your bench? Or are you now looking at players like Sterling and Aguero and wondering how many games of the next three they will play.

With the City forwards and Sterling (who has played 90 mins twice already this week, while Silva and Sane were rested midweek) in particular are you now looking at other options.

Many are already advocating ditching Sterling for Poba or Sane (if they have some spare in the bank), for example.

With two fit defenders and Duffy, I have other problems. But Sterling to Pogba is a viable move too, though it means a hit - but ultimately, less fretting!

Im rolling with the non playing Memba so I can get Eden in, might end up with 10 players the odd week but think Hazard's new central role and fixtures will more than make up for it.

Aim to have 14 starters by GW14.

A different way of looking at it - but the principle is sound - you have probably correctly pinpointed Hazard as a great player to own GWK 14 and 15 and its worth running the risk of fielding 10.

It's all well and good to have a strong bench, but the risk is more if he plays for just a few minutes and you get like 1 point and then the score from your sub doesnt count...

When we have these congested periods I tend to look at them in blocks so for me the total score at the end of GWK 13-15 is key , not necessarily getting a great score this weekend.

So with three free transfers for me (four for those who have saved) I want each move to count and am looking to ditch iffy starters and go for those who will score points in theory over a those three gameweeks.

For me that makes Sane a far more attractive proposition than Sterling. While the German has a good chance of starting the next three, the England winger will almost certainly only start twice - given his two 90 mins this week.

It is also why I'd be looking at Morata GWK 14 for Lukaku - as I think Lukaku (GWK13) and Morata (GWK 14 and 15) is the best use of a striker spot.

It is also why I have no problems ditching Jones for Otamendi for a hit - as the latter should play three easy games, while Jones will have at best one easy game and one tough one. Well worth the -4 investment I think.

The -4 for a defender rule is one of those that has lost its value over time in an age of rotation and defenders scoring well. Sort of like never captain Nicky Butt.

If a player isn't playing and another one is and can score goals and get clean sheets then I think that -4 bet is worth it.

There is some weird twisted logic there I'm sure Jonty but I can't quite see it. If you are worried about rotation then why get Sane? Yes he has hardly been rested in the league since gw 6 but in Peps mind I think that has just been fluke as when Sane has been due a break it coincided with cup games.
Sane hardly played a game in the first 5 gws but played 79 mins in EFL cup and 90 minutes in the champions league before he had started 3 games in the premier league.

If as you say Sterling gets rested this gw then he will be fit and firing for gw15 (of your three) so why would pep play Sane for three games in 8 days or whatever it is when he has Sterling, Jesus and Aguero all rested up?

I think Sane is an integral part of Peps team as is Kun and Jesus but I can't see him being untouchable and if you are looking to bring in someone who will play all three you are barking up the wrong tree with Sane.
He may well score more than any other city mids over those three by starting two and subbing another but that is not what you are looking for.

I'm guessing you haven't seen Pep's comments regarding Sane then Dino? and the reason he's been starting every game since then is because Mendy is out and Sane is the only one who can provide natural width on the left. Last night Sterling was out on the left and it badly blunted Man City's attack so I can't see Sane being dropped for Prem anytime soon

Check the timing of Mendy's injury re Sane's starts and Pep's comments about playing Sane to give width in Mendy's absence.

I agree though that no one is certain to start all three...but given his rest last night I can see Sane playing all three - and they are great fixtures.

Can see Sterling playing two tops, maybe even one and a bit.

Yeah the comment re Sane natural width makes sense but Sterling did play that position for Liverpool a lot. They might have been blunt last night but it was a much changed team.

My main point was if sterling is rested this weekend then he might play 2 and Sane 2 of the next three if Pep is looking at the amount of games they have between now and January.

I'm probably going to ditch Kun (enough of the job shift with Jesus for me) for Wilson but upgrade TCarroll, who is dead meat to Sane.

Will actually then have Silva/Sane/Sterling for a few games, one of them will probably go later in the piece to another premium mid but they are all such good value and City just ooze points. Now the CL is sorted out I can see them going mental in next 3 games.

I’m glad this season i held out to play my wildcard later.
Last season was frustrating to have a weak bench over the festive period when teams rotated. I found myself stuck with non playing bench fodder. I hope this time around to have options when needed. Also different this season,
I've gone stronger in defence with Azpiliceuta already in place.

United have 4 games in 11 days (three Premier League games in 8 days) and Pogba was recently injured for 8 weeks. He'll probably be rotated too.

With so few players truly safe from rotation, I'm not sure if it's worth spending points for players who might not play that many more minutes.

I got some thoughts to share on Agüero, Chelsea (especially Morata and/or Hazard) and the importance of a strong bench!

      Agüero:
He is in my team, but I think my point is solid enough anyway. He has been injured, he has been benched and now he has played a Feyenoord team at home without scoring. Personally I think he will start this weekend, and I think he will start atleast 2 of the next 3. A player like Agüero can still play 2 games within 5 days. He is not 36 like Zlatan or made of glass like Jones... With that in mind I also want to point out the importance of a strikers confidence. Pep needs Agüero to believe in himself before big games against Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea and so on. Agüero will simply lose confidence if he knows he will never play an away game, going to get instantly benched when he does not score, and never will play 'easy opponents' and bang in a hattrick - a striker needs that sometimes. Huddersfield is a perfect opportunity to keep Agüero in form and happy. Having said that I don't understand the whole Agüero and Jesus can't play together statement from Pep. He needs Sane to go wide (fair enough), but Jesus has been playing right wing earlier this season and they could play Sane, Agüero, Jesus next game?. I just don't think Pep in his right mind can bench Agüero in 60% of the PL games, but maybe I am biased due to owning him. He is still Agüero! But trusting in Agüero (Jesus and Sterling too) has a price. You need to have a strong bench. You can't accept Agüero being benched this week if Duffy is the autosub due to injured Jones and non-playing Carroll or potentially banned Niasse. You need someone like RLC to come in with a good fixture and so on. If your bench is solid hold on to Agüero/Sterling cause they will get points in the next 3, but if you are stuck with Hünemeier, Mbemba and Carroll you either need to upgrade bench or avoid Jesus/Agüero/Sterling.

      Chelsea (Morata and/or Hazard):
Looking at those Chelsea fixtures many already decided to double/triple up on Chelsea. That looks totally fine to me, and I can see why people are doing it (considering it myself too). However if you are only looking at either Morata or Hazard I would like to share some thoughts. Due to Hazards high price compared to the other banging premium midfielders: Pogba, Sane, Sterling, Silva, Salah, Coutinho and so on he makes it alot harder to actually make that great 3-5-2 formation without having RLC or another cheapie as the fifth playing midfielder. You actually save around 2,5m going Morata > Hazard (Hazard -> 9m and Lukaku/Agüero -> Morata). That could result in that RLC/Moting kinda guy to become Pogba in a beasty 5-man-midfield (Silva, Sane, Salah, Pogba, Richarlison). On the other hand midfielders are starting to outscore strikers, and like last week Hazard vs Morata was also the case. With those Chelsea fixtures Hazard just looks to be an amazing candidate for captaincy. And like Andy said: "If I owned both Morata and Hazard i would always captain Hazard". Hazard gets the BPS, the CS and so on. I personally think Hazard is the better choice if you want to go only one, because I think he is a better option for (C), and I think he will outscore Morata with those fixtures. I totally understand why people pairing them, but if you do I think you should (C) Hazard every time you think Chelsea will destroy the opponents.

Hope so too. The way I see it i think it is fair enough to assume Silva and Sané is nailed at this point. 1-0 at home vs. Feyenoord is not good enough. It shows the impact of Sané but especially D. Silva! He is the guy that creates, run, shoots all that kinda stuff, and I think people selling him are making a great mistake. Though I see why they prefer Sané > Silva if they only have the room for 1 City midfielder.

Agüero and Jesus battles for the central striker spot and Sterling/Jesus/B. Silva for the right wing spot.
With Sterling playing 2 games in a row, and B. Silva (the joker) to play yesterday maybe Jesus starts right wing this weekend?

Every season it's important to have a good bench. But I think this season it's a must. I've been with a solid bench since my WC in GW6 and gaining some points to cover no-shows like Aguero and Jones makes a big difference. Another example this weekend Choupo-Moting came on for Jones, massive 10 points.

I love this period, people always overthink themselves into knots.

Last year at Christmas, everyone padded their benches out, THERE WAS NO ROTATION.

Players hardly train in congested periods like these so playing games is not an issue, Phil Jones missed one game over Christmas.

      Stop freaking yourself out.

How will I deal with it? Same as always, pick my best 11 possible and make sure my subs are not dead and getting mins.

Would also be shocked if Sterling is benched on Sat, he played 90 but the player who could replace him also played 90 and we know Sterling is ahead of Bernardo Silva in the pecking order.

I seem to remember (for my team anyway) that there was a bit of rotation but my players if rested normally had cameos - so my subs mostly went unused. No guarantees it will happen like that again, though.

i tend to agree with you

christmas isnt the worst part, actually i think the latter stages of the season is more proned to rotation as many teams either have nothing to play for or have congested fixturelist and at that stage of season it´s more fatigued players than in christmas times

but a good bench is not a stupid thing to have but one must balance it ofc. No point having King 7m on bench for instance

    Forgive me, second attempt.

I have this dire defence and a ft with nothing banked...
    Jones* Mbemba* Duffy Kola Daniels

    Do I...
    A) Do Jones to Maguire/Mee
    B) Play Duffy (v Man Utd) and upgrade with a double transfer next week (using Vardy funds once I sell). This means getting an Azpi/Alonso.
    C) Do B one week early and get Vardy out before WHam.

Francis, A.King and Kun to Ottamendi, Pogba and Niasse/Wilson for a -8 ? Leaving money in the bank to bring in Hazard (c) next GW.

I ended up playing with 10 last week after Carroll and Kun no shows and now also have Francis suspended and Dunk playing away to United.

    Mustafi effect on Arsenal defence:

Mustafi playing (6 games, 5 CS, 1 GC) - including CSs against CHE and TOT
Mustafi not playing (6 games, 0 CS, 15 GC )

I am bit surprised to see this to be honest. He does not seem that effective on the pitch. Only problem is that he only played in 6 games out of 12, too injury prone. Since he is back, that may be a good time to invest in Arsenal defenders, even him maybe at 5.3? What do you think?

      Prefer Otamendi for 0.5m more.

Although I’m interested in Bellerin or Kolasinac as they offer attacking threat also.
