Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Strike Not Enough

A goal from their talisman fails to drag Spurs from their slump as Leicester City inflict a third defeat in five matches on Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Harry Kane’s seventh goal in as many away matches this season was, on the face of it, the sign of a good night’s work at Leicester City.

The strike was certainly a relief for the 17.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers, that’s close to a million, who captained him.

But they could have been excused for expecting more – his six-point return at the King Power Stadium was the first time this season he’s failed to earn bonus when on the scoresheet.

And then there’s the issue of Spurs themselves. How long can a misfiring side keep relying on Kane to bail them out, particularly when he has struggled to make an impact at home all season?

The 2-1 defeat last night was their third straight match without a win, and their third loss in five, with perhaps the only positive on the night the return from long-term injury of Erik Lamela (6.3), who was handed 13 minutes from the bench and still found the time to set up Kane’s goal.

However, from a Fantasy perspective, his return to contention only clouds the issue in the Spurs midfield, handing Pochettino more options to rotate.

Not that we have interest in that Spurs midfield right now.

Christian Eriksen missed a glorious chance to score his first goal since Gameweek 8 and continues to leak owners as a result. He lost 166,000+ in the lead up to last night, and a further 12,000+ since have made him the third most sold player heading into Gameweek 15.

Pochettino can’t even offer us defensive solidity to fall back on at the moment. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in six matches and the rotation issues surrounding their wing-backs – Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were given the nod last night – have further dented managers’ confidence in Ben Davies.

The Welsh international has lost owners in five of the last six Gameweeks and is already exceeding Eriksen’s sales going into the weekend trip to Watford.

That match precedes a Champions League dead rubber in which Pochettino will surely rest key assets, so Davies and Kieran Trippier could well play at both Watford and in Gameweek 16’s Wembley visit from Stoke City.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (wat STK BHA), investment in any of Spurs’ stars is an increasingly fraught affair at present.

Foxes back in focus

New Leicester manager Claude Puel has described his side as a work in progress, and that progress was there for all to see against Spurs.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a huge relief for his 13.9% ownership, although more than 133,000 managers have jumped ship over the past six Gameweeks, with the England man having found the net just twice in his last eight starts.

The form of Riyad Mahrez is considerably more encouraging.

His winner last night was his third goal of the season, and all have come since Gameweek 8. During the same period, he’s also provided three of his six assists for the campaign.

Owned by just 4.2%, the midfielder could prove to be an excellent pre-Christmas differential as the Foxes prepare for a promising quartet of matches (BUR new sou CRY) up next.

However, Demarai Gray’s stock – previously buoyant under Puel when he started the last four – took a dent following last night’s encounter. The 5.3 midfield option was benched for the first by his manager, with Shinji Okazaki returning to the starting line-up.

At the back, things remain patchy. Leicester have kept a very unPuel-like one clean sheet in seven, but those short-term fixtures could help improve that.

Christian Fuchs missed out for the Foxes due to the birth of his daughter on Tuesday afternoon, while striker Kelechi Iheanacho was also absent through illness but is expected back in the squad for Gameweek 14.

30k FF teams already ushered Young in.
Don't get me wrong - he took both or his goals brilliantly. Especially the 1st one for me.

The point chasing is crazy though. Waste of a transfer.
Chances of him repaying against City or Arsenal is virtually null.
I never understand this weekly chase after last weeks hot prospect.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

He's always had a decent free kick on him - he's just not been allowed to showcase it much in recent seasons when the likes of Pogba/Ibra/Rooney and to a certain extent Lukaku have been on the pitch pulling rank.

        I don't disagree.
Does he still feature with the likes of Fellaini / Matic fit.
Mkhitaryan is bound to be back in favour at some point as is Mata.
Makes that a pretty crowded midfield pool of players.
Pogba Martial Matic the ever presents really when fit. Makes youngs chances a bit slimmer.

21 people bought in Michael Carrick this week. 5 got Santi Cazorla in. 1 transferred in Coleman.

The FPL world is very odd. Points chasing will always be a part of the game, lots of players look at the high score and get that player in with zero context of who they are. A lot do it to grab any price rise they can, so later in the season they have a massive budget to try and win one week's top score.

      Very weird place FPL.

      1. Salah'd n Sauce
        • 7 Years

That's true. There is the budget chasing. I get that too to more of a degree.
I just never understand what I'd consider to be anomalies scoring higher than normal then everyone jumping on board like they are going to start producing that every gameweek.

The oddity additions though can come down to people trying to find a differential. You want to talk about madness... I have brought in Moreno. No word of a lie. Who knows if it will pay off but my thinking was nice run of fixtures and it doesn't seem to matter how bad he does Klopp sticks with him. Likes to get forward so who knows. Risk taken

Would like to hear the communities' advice:

    GW15 Team:

    Forster
    Walker - Daniels - Alonso - Bellerin - Maguire
    Sane - Hazard
    Morata - Kane - Wilson

    Bench: Elliot, Surman, Carroll, Carrick

    Transfer thoughts:
    A) Bellerin + Carrick >> Zaha + Mee (-4)
    B) Forster to Pope/Lloris (FT)
    C) Carrick >> Choupo-Moting (FT)
    D) Carrick >> RLC (FT)

Many logged on last night to see Elliot unexpectedly dropped. Some have another good goalkeeper in the squad, but many had a fixture plan in mind could now be ruined. (related sidenote: my other keeper is the virtually unplayable Joe Hart) Your City midfielder is benched once in a while, you can get over it - but when it comes to your Number 1, they have to be set in stone. For that reason, Elliot is suddenly very tough to trust.

Who are people looking to bring in? Pope has lovely fixtures for the next five, but they turn real nasty over Xmas and bringing him in would mean a lot of Burnley defensive double ups. Lossl and Ryan have the form, but fixtures are tough for two teams who may increasingly struggle. Schmeichel? Fabianski? Forster? Begovic? Or stump up and go for one of the big dogs.

    Lay out your case.

TLDR - Unexpected goalkeeper transfers are the worst.

I think Lössl has very good fixtures. Huddersfield face Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the last 4 GWs of the season. In the last 5 games of the first half of the season, they only face Chelsea of the top 6. I don't think he's the best option if you want to rotate GKs, but he could easily be someone you play every week.
