Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Strike Not Enough

A goal from their talisman fails to drag Spurs from their slump as Leicester City inflict a third defeat in five matches on Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Harry Kane’s seventh goal in as many away matches this season was, on the face of it, the sign of a good night’s work at Leicester City.

The strike was certainly a relief for the 17.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers, that’s close to a million, who captained him.

But they could have been excused for expecting more – his six-point return at the King Power Stadium was the first time this season he’s failed to earn bonus when on the scoresheet.

And then there’s the issue of Spurs themselves. How long can a misfiring side keep relying on Kane to bail them out, particularly when he has struggled to make an impact at home all season?

The 2-1 defeat last night was their third straight match without a win, and their third loss in five, with perhaps the only positive on the night the return from long-term injury of Erik Lamela (6.3), who was handed 13 minutes from the bench and still found the time to set up Kane’s goal.

However, from a Fantasy perspective, his return to contention only clouds the issue in the Spurs midfield, handing Pochettino more options to rotate.

Not that we have interest in that Spurs midfield right now.

Christian Eriksen missed a glorious chance to score his first goal since Gameweek 8 and continues to leak owners as a result. He lost 166,000+ in the lead up to last night, and a further 12,000+ since have made him the third most sold player heading into Gameweek 15.

Pochettino can’t even offer us defensive solidity to fall back on at the moment. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in six matches and the rotation issues surrounding their wing-backs – Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were given the nod last night – have further dented managers’ confidence in Ben Davies.

The Welsh international has lost owners in five of the last six Gameweeks and is already exceeding Eriksen’s sales going into the weekend trip to Watford.

That match precedes a Champions League dead rubber in which Pochettino will surely rest key assets, so Davies and Kieran Trippier could well play at both Watford and in Gameweek 16’s Wembley visit from Stoke City.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (wat STK BHA), investment in any of Spurs’ stars is an increasingly fraught affair at present.

Foxes back in focus

New Leicester manager Claude Puel has described his side as a work in progress, and that progress was there for all to see against Spurs.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a huge relief for his 13.9% ownership, although more than 133,000 managers have jumped ship over the past six Gameweeks, with the England man having found the net just twice in his last eight starts.

The form of Riyad Mahrez is considerably more encouraging.

His winner last night was his third goal of the season, and all have come since Gameweek 8. During the same period, he’s also provided three of his six assists for the campaign.

Owned by just 4.2%, the midfielder could prove to be an excellent pre-Christmas differential as the Foxes prepare for a promising quartet of matches (BUR new sou CRY) up next.

However, Demarai Gray’s stock – previously buoyant under Puel when he started the last four – took a dent following last night’s encounter. The 5.3 midfield option was benched for the first by his manager, with Shinji Okazaki returning to the starting line-up.

At the back, things remain patchy. Leicester have kept a very unPuel-like one clean sheet in seven, but those short-term fixtures could help improve that.

Christian Fuchs missed out for the Foxes due to the birth of his daughter on Tuesday afternoon, while striker Kelechi Iheanacho was also absent through illness but is expected back in the squad for Gameweek 14.

The frustration with City players is that when they're rested they're then more likely to return next game. BUT the casuals all transfer them out and we lose a load of TV.

Silva will be rested tonight and it's going to cost me another 0.1 on him.

They're definitely most dangerous after they've been benched. Think I'll stick with Sane and Otamendi. I think they'll start most games until January

Maybe the casuals transfer them out because they can’t be doing with the rotation, much like the hardcores round here that can’t be doing with Kane actually returning, expecting a brace every game because he costs a lot

Now the day of reckoning has come for the 4.0 goalkeeper, which direction are we looking to go in? Especially those that own both Speroni and Elliot.

Do we continue to go cheap and look at short term 4.3 options like Grant and Hennessey?

Upgrade one or both to 4.5/4.6 keepers like Lossl, Ryan, Pope, Begovic, Gomes, etc

Or do we write off a keeper spot and upgrade one of them to Courtois or David De Gea?

Personally I've got Pope and Elliot, think I'll leave it till I get 2 FTs and get Ryan or Gomes, Brighton are pretty solid and Watford's fixtures look rather nice.

        We don't know.

Problem is if you own him and Speroni, or Elliot was your only playing keeper you don't want to give it another game week to find out as you'll likely have ten men again.

    2. La Gazzetta
      • 6 Years

I own both Speroni and Elliot and this is about as far as I have got with my problem solving. The keeper decision is central to a few other trades I need to make so I'm really undecided. Courtois is probably the only Chelsea player who will play all the games? I'm kind of leaning that way and likely hold for the season (until 2nd wildcard at least) unless Chelsea defence extremely disappointing

      1. Big Mac 24
        • 11 Years

I have both and have zero in the bank - i'm really happy with all of my players apart from T Carroll, so will likely trade him out for Andy King at 4.3, allowing me Hennessey in for Elliot. This covers both Palace options and they kept an away clean sheet last night, and have great fixtures for a while coming up. I can't afford to improve further at the moment without sacrificing a much better outfield option.

        1. La Gazzetta
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

I considered this option too as I only have 0.4 in the bench and not sure howmuch better the 4.5 options are than a palace keeper. I have some feeling they will keep a few clean sheets. Pretty big risk. I might just take a hit and get some more Chelsea in and downgrade lukaku while I'm at it

I have him and was planning to get rid. His price drop to 11.4 has made me think maybe hold him. I think I'm going crazy though as I'm starting to consider trading him to players like blBenteke and Rashford. I feel like I'll want some united after their tough 2 next fixtures. Just not sure if Lukaku is the right one

Poor form, lack of service and two hard fixtures coming up. I've sold him.

Pogba is the only Utd asset i'd hold on to at the moment.

Not making the transfer just pushes the problem a week further on though (assuming you don't believe one of your current goalkeepers will win their place back). May as well bite the bullet.

    My team :

    Speroni - Elliot

    Mee - Dunk - Naughton - Mariappa - Mbemba

    RLC - Richardilson - Salah - Sterling - Sane

    Morata - Kane - Niasse

0FT (Traded out Lukaku) 6,5M in the bank.

    1 : Do nothing
2 : Elliot --> Hennessy -4p (Then RLC --> Hazard next week + if Hazard raises to times i wont afford him)
3: RLC --> Hazard -4p (Then Elliot --> Hennesy next week)

1 and 3 means no goali this weekend.

I'm in similar position with similar team. I'm considering an 8 point hit to do similar moves to all the ones you're suggesting. I think leaving 6.5 in the bank is worse than a 8 point hit. Considering hazard or Alonso Courtois double up

I’ve been in 4-4-2 for a while, Elwood. Found better value in City’s midfield, rather than the rotation risk of Aguero/Jesus. It would essentially be a straight swap. I do have 2 free transfers though. Unfortunately one of them is tied up finding a replacement for Elliot. I’m thinking possibly Pope? Not sure how long he’ll keep his position though, I don’t know anything about Heaton’s injury.

I need to bring in a cheap striker. Bugger. This transfer was not as straightforward as I thought it would be. May have to take a hit here.
