Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Sterling Strikes Again

The newly prolific Raheem Sterling makes the difference as Manchester City cruise to a 1-0 win at Newcastle.

A third straight double-digit haul from the Manchester City winger took Pep Guardiola’s side to 18 league wins in a row and Sterling to second in Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) scoring charts.

The England international scored his 13th goal of the season, and his fourth in three Gameweeks, as City edged a very deep-lying Newcastle.

Kevin De Bruyne provided a ninth assist of the campaign – a league-high tally – and missed a couple of chances to score himself, while Sergio Aguero hit the woodwork twice in the first half.

But it was Sterling’s night. Again.

The midfielder has featured in every match since Gameweek 10, starting the last 10, and has produced either a goal or an assist in eight of them.

Despite such consistency of both starts and performance, he was captained by only 168,406 (or 3.0%) for Gameweek 20, as maximum bonus took him to 11 points and 36 across his last three stellar performances.

His ownership has increased by more than a million over the last six Gameweeks and his price has now risen to 8.8 as a further 64,000+ managers have made him Gameweek 21’s fourth most popular signing.

Captained by 229,000+ (4.1%) last night, De Bruyne has started every league match this season and has now produced points in seven of the last ten Gameweeks to emerge as the go-to option for Sterling owners looking to double-up on the City midfield.

Frustration elsewhere for City attack

Despite starting a fourth straight match for the first time this season, Aguero continues to disappoint.

He has now blanked in four of his last six starts – a big blow to the 340,000+ (6.1%) who handed him the armband and then endured 76 fruitless minutes from their man.

For once, he wasn’t replaced by his erstwhile strike partner Gabriel Jesus as the Brazilian was already on the pitch.

Jesus, who was sold by more than 93,000 heading into the Newcastle match, replaced the injured Vincent Kompany after ten minutes as coach Pep Guardiola switched to a 3-5-2 in which Fernandinho dropped back into defence.

But these are tough times for managers hanging onto City strikers, with those standing by Jesus suffering the most.

Since his last goal in Gameweek 12, he’s started just twice, not featured at all a further two times and the three assists he’s managed have not been enough to dissuade more than 336,000 FPL bosses to sell him and move on.

Midfielders David Silva and Leroy Sane both enjoy ownerships close to the 900,000 mark, but neither is proving to be a reliable source of points at present.

The Spaniard was again absent from the squad last night, with reports that he was back in his homeland for personal reasons as yet unconfirmed.

The fact that even the club’s official website failed to give a reason for his absence would suggest it wasn’t a tactical move on Guardiola’s part, however.

Sane, meanwhile, has apparently dropped down the pecking order in recent weeks.

Having started eight matches in a row from Gameweek 6, the German has been named on the teamsheet in just four of the subsequent seven and was given just seven minutes from the bench at St James’ Park.

He was sold by 86,000+ ahead of Gameweek 20 and although he could be on for starts at Crystal Palace and then home to Watford, nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to Guardiola and rotation.

Another Clean Sheet for Otamendi and co

The league leaders moved level with Chelsea and Man United for clean sheets by grabbing their tenth of the campaign.

At the heart of that defensive resolve is Nicolas Otamendi (6.3).

FPL’s most popular defender, with 29.8% ownership, the Argentine has helped City keep a league-best six clean sheets on the road and his two bonus points last night took him to 14 for the season.

An eight-point tally took him into third among FPL defenders on 102 points, just eight off Marco Alonso at the summit.

Second only to the Chelsea wing-back for transfers in this Gameweek, Otamendi’s security of starts was underlined once again last night as Kompany limped off early, while John Stones is still unavailable.

Elsewhere at the back, Fabien Delph missed out for the first time since Gameweek 6 as he was deemed to be “not fully fit”, making him an early doubt for the Palace match on New Years’ Eve.

Danilo took Delph’s place on the left as a result and mirrored Otamendi’s output after also claiming two bonus points.

Benitez keeps his powder dry

If Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez’s plan was to rest key players while trying to keep the scoreline respectable last night, then it was job done.

City were never forced into top gear against their hosts, but the fact that it was the first time since Gameweek 7, against Chelsea, that the league leaders have failed to score two or more goals was tribute to the Magpies’ organisation.

Benitez watched his side reduced to just two shots on target from 22% possession, although Otamendi did have to clear one effort off the line.

But he was able to preserve key men Matt Ritchie, who was rested, and Dwight Gayle and Christian Atsu, who were given limited second-half minutes, for the rather more winnable fixture that is the visit of Brighton on Saturday.

Newcastle’s most owned player in FPL, goalkeeper Rob Elliot (23.4%), was again benched by the vast majority of his 1.3 million managers.

Those who risked him were rewarded with what was probably a better than par total of three points, thanks to the surprisingly low final score and an extra point gained from the five saves he made.

I'm resigned to not having Otamendi again now. He's just too expensive when I already have Alonso. Sterling is a must though, do what is necessary to get him in.

Hi guys advice on what to do this week? Taken a 50 point lead in my ML. Would like Alonso but would need to lose Hazard this week to fund it so not sure that makes sense. Should I just save FT for the double?!

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which Spurs midfielders do you think are the best to own for DGWK 22 and why?

Given Kane is likely to be in most sides, will you be looking to treble up on Spurs assets? Or only opt for one?

Which is best. Son, Alli and Eriksen are all in strong form, delivering returns in recent weeks? But which of this trio will get the most minutes?

I'm definitely doubling up on Spurs mids and could potentially afford any of these three key options.

Alli has the form. Son the value and explosive quality, while Eriksen is ticking over nicely with assists.

Think in terms of balance Son and one other looks good. Very tough to decide though so keen to hear others views.

Hard to agree that Alli has the form, 9 games with just the 2 assists before Burnley and then a haul v a pub team performance from Soton. But I get your point, he has hauled in his last two and can be explosive on his day and is playng SWA...could convince myself to buy the bugger back yet 😉

You are ditching Hazard I assume. Planning to get Alli and Son myself but looking forward after GW22 idea of being stuck with Alli and Son without Hazard feels a bit uncomfortable. :/ Hazard back soon has to be also planned imo but could be probably fixed quit easily by saving a ft for gw23. Have you considered dropping Salah?

I'm looking at Son and Eriksen and arnie for a -4. Think Eriksen is more wise than Alli and Son explosive, Both of them are also close price brackets to what I want moving forward as well. Given that Coutinho doesn't go to Barca, he would be an easy swap from Eriksen.

Having 5 dgwer's could really pay off and theres not a huge rush to get rid quickly after as well as fixtures are good. Would look something like this:

        Elliot
        Otamendi,Jones,Christensen,Ogbonna
        Son,Eriksen,Arnie,Salah,Sterling
        Kane

        Fabianski,Dunk,DCL,Depoitre

It was almost exactly a year ago that Alli scored twice against Chelsea to become near-essential for the rest of the season.

I don't see it myself. Eriksen is a bit more of an all-rounder and Alli is perhaps a little more of a luxury item (for rotation purposes), but factoring in the 0.3m price difference I think Alli is a slightly better shout.

Ignoring the prices, Son is still the best option imo. Not impressed with Alli. Eriksen plays deeper than both of them.

Will only get one. No room for another one when I have Sterling, Salah and Coutinho.

Defo Son or Alli, Eriksen plays too deep and shares too many set-pieces these days. Probably Alli as he's an easier placeholder for Coutinho, but while he's probably more nailed than Son, he also always has a stupid red card in him.

Had originally planned for Eriksen but I'm leaning towards Alli now. Hoping that he is hitting a purple patch. Money not a huge consideration as I probably won't be keeping for too long anyway.

Slight worry is that Alli is more likely to get a red card than the other two.

I don't know if some posters on here watch football but Alli has been brutal up until the Soton game! Soton were shocking. Believe me I know as I held Alli until 2 gws ago and watched most of Spurs games. (you could cal me a bitter seller but the fact is he hasn't performed at all). In saying that, SWA are no better and if ever there's a chance of another double figure haul!
Eriksen seems to playing deeper than earlier in the season when he has been firing, a bit pricy atm!
Son is explosive and a great option but will share minutes with Lamella surely. Still if he just plays most of the game v Swans, he still looks value!
I'm looking at Kane(TC) with Vertonghen (Wanyama back is huge). I don't want to revert back to double Spurs attack (although Son is really tempting me). I prefer Arnie/Lanzini as I would like to keep for WHU fix after the double.

Could be, but I'm convinced enough yet to buy him back at his price. He looks good for a dgw punt if you can afford him, although he could easily get a rest for one of the games where Lamela / Sissoko gets the start.

You can always bring him back. Swapping to a Spurs mid for GW22/23 gives you (swa / WHU / EVE) as opposed to (bur / MCI) for Liverpool. And he's a risk of a rest against Burnley if he plays this week. Hardly crazy...

None in my view. Eriksen, being my favorite, fails to deliver. Alli is inconsistent. Son only steals from Kane. And I already have Kane. If I can kep my FT, and as long as my midfield (Pogba, Coutinho, Sterling, Salah, Hazard) is not injured, I will hope to upgrade Mariappa and Kabasele to Ogbonna and Masuako. And then (despite captaining Kane) will hope they deliver me clean sheet returns. A boring strategy, but I can't see benefiting from a hit when Spurs' defence is so reckless and midfield so insonsistent and sharing. If my midfield is injured, I guess I will get Lanzini and upgrade Mariappa to a Chelsea defender.

VFM and form is Son. Will he start both though? Not sure.

Erikssen a non starter for me, Alli has had a couple of good games but can’t get away from an otherwise disappointing season.

So I’m almost certainly just going for Kane. I may TC. But it seems that West Ham shut up shop against the big sides and successfully so and attack (and concede) vs teams they feel they can win against. So I’m nervous about another Wembley 0-0 vs the Hammers.

I’ve had a look at it and I think the best way for me to do it is moving Hazard and Richarlison out for Alli and Son.

If Pogba doesn’t perform against Southampton I could be persuaded to move him out for Arnie but I would be reluctant to as I’ve only had him one game.

This will give me a Spurs attacking triple up of Son, Alli and Kane with Adrian and Ogbonna for West Ham.

I’d still have the money to do the transfers I want to do after that game week and looking at the furture fixtures those DGW players should be good for a few weeks.

Really torn here. I am on hazard currently. More explosive than Morata. Plus he is due. With hazard u can be assured of bonus if he returns not with Morata. A hazard goal means he will yield mostly 11 points. Hasn't scored in 5. So he is due

"Due" means absolutely nothing, the rest is sensible though.

Salah is safer option, but Hazard was back to his extremely dangerous self las match. Just unlucky he didn't score a brace.

I think Danny Murphy was onto something when he said Soton are a group of players not playing for their manger! Their lack of effort was woeful!!
    Pogba(C)?
I know he's playing a little deep but he's still firing shots at goal and might be given more freedom in this game!

Fair shout but an injury hit Stoke defence seems even more (C) friendly imo

Pogba is a good differential captain i think with Salah an obvious one so worth a punt I think. Pogba can score different types of goals
