Dugout Discussion

Dugout Discussion – Arsenal versus Swansea

Gameweek 36 comes to its conclusion tonight as Arsenal host Swansea at the Emirates. After a polished performance at Hull last Monday, the Gunners have now won nine of their last ten league outings, with only a goalless draw against Chelsea temporarily slowing their momentum.

With a double Gameweek against United and Sunderland just around the corner, Fantasy managers are afforded further opportunity to scout Arsene Wenger’s main men this evening.

Alexis Sanchez served up a second double-figure return in four league outings with a brace against the Tigers to persuade over 144,000 FPL managers to snap up his services ahead of this one. The Chilean isn’t the only one worth considering in an attack that looks full of Fantasy potential right now – up top, Olivier Giroud has seven strikes in the last nine, whilst Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla are also jousting for our attention. The Welshman has recovered from a knock sustained at the KC and will surely be set for significant investment on the back of three 10+ hauls in his previous six.

Garry Monk’s men have been in decent form, too. The Swans have won their last two matches since switching to 4-2-3-1, though with Nelson Oliveira missing out through injury tonight, the visitors are without a recognised striker in their starting line-up.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Though with Ivan I got the impression he just wanted to feature in every game, Terry wants every minute.

Oh, but Giroud does so much more than just scores goals. His link-up play, passing, possession winning and his runs off the ball. Do you remember when Welbeck was useless upfront and Sanchez could make no dribbles. With Giroud hogging the defenders, there's space for the midfielders to get into the box.

Anyway, there's the same myth as with Higuain about scoring only when match is already won. In fact, both score a lot of first goals and game winners. Giroud, recently, against Newcastle both goals in 2-1, against West Ham the first goal in 3-0, against QPR the first goal in 2-1 (QPR scoring the last goal in the end), against Everton the first goal in 2-0, against M'borough both goals, against Palace second goal in 2-1, against City the second in 2-0. All these were important goals, and that's just his recent goals in matches that Arsenal won, bar 1 goal in each of the big wins against Liverpool and Aston Villa where the margin was large, but even against Villa, he scored the first goal in that 5-0 rubbing. Definitely not goals scored when the match is already over.

It's not true with Higuain either, by the way.

His goals in the last month or two have been an exception but the rest of his career hes been doing what i said

His link up play is awful. Looks great when it works once every 20 times but the number of tkme he gives the ball away is unreal. Hardly ever works against the big teams as well. Had a decent run of form but tje monaco games showed hes not the player arsenal need to challenge for epl or ucl

So a few misses in one match shows that he's not the player Arsenal needs, despite him putting up an excellent performance at Monaco in the next match?

There's no stats to back up your claim about lack of important goals really. Same about giving the ball away. Costa and Aguero lose possession more than Giroud. So do Hazard and Benteke. He's also scored against so many big teams already, that's another myth. No player scores in most matches against big opponents, because those are the matches where scoring is the most difficult.

Most importantly, Arsenal's current system works and he is essential for it and maybe the most difficult player to replace with whatever is available on the markets now.

All round pretty much. He's fine. But nowhere near ruthless or clinical enough. Also lack of pace is very frustrating..seems incapable of making and scoring a goal himself. And also regularly fails in the big games imo. I think Wenger is satisfied though and I actually can't see us signing a striker this summer.

But he's been about the best finisher in the league this season. It's tough to think of a player who would bring his qualities with added pace and better scoring. Lewandowski is the only one that comes in mind. But I doubt he's available or willing to join Arsenal. Benzema and Suarez, too, but that's the same story. I think Arsenal has to content to him, unless they want to rethink their game plan, which in my opinion would be a mistake, as this game plan has started to work splendidly.
