Scout Report – Christian Fuchs

Earlier this week, Leicester City announced their first signing of the summer transfer window, snapping up Austria skipper Christian Fuchs on a three-year deal. Arriving at the King Power on a free transfer, the former Schalke left-back – who reportedly rejected interest from Swansea and Aston Villa – cited Foxes boss Nigel Pearson as pivotal to his decision:

“I think the philosophy of the coach fits me well. He gave me a nice phone call. He told me about the philosophy that Leicester are playing. He’s simply a very nice chap. He’s a cool guy. He said to me that he’s very personal – he knows how to handle the players on a personal level, and he also convinced me about Leicester. I followed them last season, and it was an impressive escape at the end. Everybody knows about it, everybody saw it and everybody’s talking about it – the great escape. I’ve seen other people working here, how they play, and it’s fun to watch.”

The History

Fuchs cut his teeth at local clubs SVg Pitten and Wiener Neustadt, before earning a move to Austrian Bundesliga outfit SV Mattersburg at the age of 18. Following a five-year stint that harvested 15 goals and 24 assists in 155 appearances across all competitions, the set-piece specialist made the switch to the top tier of German football, signing for Bundesliga outfit VgL Bochum.

Fuchs produced six goals and eight assists in 57 appearances over two terms at his new club, yet was loaned out to Mainz 05 in the 2010/11 season. After serving up eight assists in 33 appearances, he subsequently courted the attention of Schalke, signing a four-year deal that expired this summer.

In his first season at the club, Schalke won the DLL-Supercup, courtesy of a penalty shoot-out against Borussia Dortmund. His final season with Die Königsblauen served up three goals in 27 outings in all competitions, including a strike during Schalke’s 4-3 victory over Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final. The left-back managed eight goals and 30 assists in 136 matches for the Bundesliga outfit before signing on at the King Power Stadium.

Fuchs also boasts international pedigree. Since making his debut for Austria in a friendly match against Croatia nine years ago, he’s chalked up 66 appearances for his country, registering a solitary goal along the way.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to operate on the left of a back-four or at left wing-back, Fuchs’ signing immediately casts doubts over Jeffrey Schlupp’s position at the King Power Stadium. With reports suggesting both Arsenal and Swansea are keeping tabs on Schlupp, the experienced Fuchs looks poised to oust the Ghanaian in Pearson’s first-team plans.

Akin to Schlupp, the Austrian defender would almost certainly be classified as a defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, thus offering the same out-of-position potential for attacking returns, should Pearson continue to utilise the 3-4-1-2 formation that helped ensure Leicester’s survival last time out.

Fuchs’ assist potential certainly bodes well on the Fantasy front. Renowned for his crossing ability, particularly from a dead-ball, the Austrian produced 33 key passes in the last Bundesliga campaign, averaging 1.3 key passes per appearance – as compared to Schlupp’s 0.7 in the Premier League. Furthermore, his frequency of chances created (one every 59 minutes) would have placed him second only to Leighton Baines (41.9 minutes) among the Premier League’s defender roster in 2014/15. Like Baines, Fuchs can also provide a potent threat from direct free-kicks.

To compound his appeal, the Foxes’ rearguard is very much on our radars following their run of five cleans sheets in the final seven Gameweeks of last season. Given that Leicester ultimately finished the campaign with 55 goals against – the fourth worst defensive record in the Premier League – a price of 5.0 looks on the cards for their new recruit.

With points potential at both ends of the pitch, Fuchs could be poised to play a significant part in our five-man backlines for the season ahead. Summer appearances, offering clear indication of regular starts, could well ensure that Fuchs features heavily in the shake-up for our initial lineups.

Maybe as much as 20m. Hernandez Nani and Januzaj are worth more than 20m imo. And they cover more positions.

In saying that United would save a lot on wages by downsizing their squad.

The tend not to sell top players which surprises me really. I think they have to sell the likes of Dzeko who is wasted at City and would command a high transfer fee.

Yeah, personally I'd sell a few players, the likes of Toure, Nasri, Dzeko as you say, and perhaps trim down that defense a bit too. Navas could be moved on too. Though its hard to tell what they really want to do.

Liverpool could do with someone like Dzeko. I wouldn't expect City to sell Toure and Nasri as I think both are still very much in the first team plans at least on a rotation basis.

I see Liverpool are looking to get Bogdan on a free transfer as well, not bad competition for Mignolet

I don't really rate Bogdan, I suppose he's decent backup though. We really need to get a top class goalkeeper at some point in the near future, easier said than done though.

I think thats just because United and Arsenal have more fans and are therefore a bigger audience to transfer rumours. Normally not a lot happens before the transfer window happens, just journalism gone mad. And United and Arsenal stories sell.

No. Chicago beat Anaheim, a team near Los Angeles, and Tampa bay beat my NY Rangers. The two Florida teams, Tampa and Florida (the latter is in Fort Lauderdale, ten minutes from my moms house, and 45 minutes from Miami) have good fan base followings, in part due to many transplanted northerners and Canadians who now live in Florida.

The Canadian based teams have struggled in the playoffs lately. Montreal had a very good team this year, but they only advanced one round, losing to Tampa in round 2.

The Stanley cup refers to the entire post season playoff tournament, culminating in the cup being awarded to the winners. In the four American sports, the champion is the winner of the playoff tournament, not the team who finishes first in the standings (like the way my Rangers did this year....means next to nothing, really).

Those two work so well together and both were at their best under Pardew. Would be a massive coup for Palace if they manage it but it definitely seems too good to be true and I can't imagine Palace being able to afford them both.

About 15m each. 30m is a big outlay for Palace and its questionable whether Remy or Cabaye even want to reduce themselves to a mid table club again.

Sorry DWO'W - that's complete bolx (irony). It IS important to use good grammar and spelling. Why do you think some employers ask for hand written letters? There might be a boring old fart like me reading them at the other end! Applications with poor spelling and grammar will be the first to enter the bin.

Oh for sure 😉 Just seems unnecessary in my point of view, seems like they have a surplus of wingers at this point (if you still see Young and Valencia as wingers). I understand that with Falcao and RvP leaving, it hinders their depth up front, but surely investing in a striker is the play here, no? 25m for another winger, who I imagine will find it tough to break into the XI.

Agreed. Plenty of people want Rooney as striker but I bet LVG would prefer Rooney as flexible...they need a striker for that.

I'm thinking United might play more of a 433 formation with a false 9 and not have an out and out striker. Rooney to lead the line but still help out in midfield with some pacy wingers on either side. Its hard to imagine how else we can sell strikers but buy wingers. No doubt Nani and Janazaj would be getting sold though and ADM might play in the midfield 3 rather than the front 3.

Stick a tennis ball between the small of your back and your seat and it will alter your posture to a better position when driving...in effect it will straighten your spine whilst driving. It will still be sore, but not as sore as "normal' driving.

Few tips as I suffer from bad back for last five years. Put these practices in place about two years ago and it's been amazing!

      SLEEPING:
      1) orthopedic mattress! You spend a third of your time in bed, easy solution. There always on sale on scoopon and the like so shop around.
      2) don't be lying around resting your back. Being up and active will generally loosen it up better

      Driving:
      1) get a wedge for the gap at base of back
      2) move seat forward one click closer to wheel
      3) wind seat up to 90 degree angle

      Relaxing:
1)sit on hard straight back chair(kitchen chair)
      2) we all like to laze so sit on comfy chairs with cushion at back.

      Stretching:
      1) back stretches
      2) hamstring stretches

All these will feel awkward at first but will make huge difference over all.
My problem was muscular, but I'm sure a lot will still apply! Hope this helps! Feel your pain. Get well soon

I was wondering that too, as I have lower back pinching on the nerve with the pain all going downwards into the bum/leg/foot. Maybe it can either go up or down depending on which part of the nerve is trapped?

Either way, Chiros/Osteopaths & massage from a good physio will help, but ultimately I found that sticking to my own stretching program daily gives the best results. You need to spend a minimum of 10mins morning and night, and particularly before/after sport if you still partake.

Strengthening the abdominal muscles to the maximum and losing some weight (if applicable) will also help. Also try hanging from a bar to let your body stretch out.
        Good luck 🙂

Fiji about to play Uzbekistan in the Fifa U20 WC. If Fiji win they'd move onto the round of 16, better than Argentina who were knocked out. Would be a huge result for the small island nation and a very rare feat to have 2 Oceania teams qualify for the round of 16 in a World cup.

I think signing Cabaye and Remy would be ideal for Palace, though I don't see Chelsea letting Remy go unless they sign Falcao.

    ----------------Jedinak------------Cabaye
    --Zaha-------------------Puncheon-------------Bolasie
    --------------------------------Remy

That attack can rival Spurs, Liverpool and Soton for 5th next season.

      • 9 Years

It definitely could, though you might reverse the positions of Bolasie and Puncheon.

Defensively Palace are likely to be suspect though, Pardew teams often are. Can't see them finishing much above 10th.

Nice. That would be brilliant for them. He's way above their level.

Yes, could very well improve the team whose strikers are Murray, Gayle and Chamakh. Murray as #2 is good, the others are below PL level.

not sure why he would go to Palace, he would get straight in a lot of other teams.... If he wants to stay in London, I would take him at Spurs without a moments hesitation.

Chelsea are hoping to make Benteke the "new Demba Ba" as well.

Cabaye and Remy seem way out of their league tbh.

I remember before Christmas seeing a number of comments on here regarding Arsenal, and a lot of them were along the lines of "If we didn't have Alexis Sanchez we'd be screwed...", funny how things change like that. 😀

Indeed, it only took a change in system to get the most out of the 'SAS' despite negligible defensive strategy, but Wenger really has this Arsenal team a lot more balanced now, should be quite strong next year provided they get what they need in the transfer window. Really no excuse to challenge net season.

Scout Picks team of the season

    Forster
    Clyne, Bertrand, Ivanovic, Terry
    Sanchez, Silva, Hazard
    Kun, Austin, Kane

I'm expecting that 11 to set us back approximatly 94m plus bench fodder (17m+) at the start of the new season, so 11m+ over budget.

How many of that 11, are likely to make your starting team at the start of next season ?. It's 3, Chelsea defender, Haz and Kun, for me.

I think Hazard/Silva, Kun and a Chelsea defender though not necessarily Terry/Ivan will be first on my list. Walcott too probably. Other than that, I'd like to see how the squads shape up before making any more decisions.

Walcott's pencilled into my provisional 11, as well.

I think one thing I'll be noting personally, not saying its a must or anything, is disregarding United players initially, their squad needs the most work of the top teams and performances will have to improve drastically before I consider their players.

No one is nailed in my team except Kun 😉
Clyne was in team for whole season but probably wont be this time due to price.

So, is Mo Farah set to become the UK's own Lance Armstrong?

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 3 days ago

I find it strange there hasn't been more mud thrown at him, actually.

If this was Bolt's coach (i.e. another athlete dominant in his field), everyone would be all over it suggesting he must be doping too.

The fact that the media keep saying that "there is no suggestion Farah has done anything wrong" makes me think that there is, otherwise why would they keep mentioning Farah.

Because isn't that the only reason we care? I guess they've got to be careful re legal action too!

True re Legal Action but then how come the media have hung, drawn and quartered Sepp Blatter before anything has been proven? Because Farah is British?

I do hope not. I would like to think he's clean.

Lifetime bans for coaches, sportsmen and the doctors if involved should be struck off.

Kicked out of the sport maybe.

Who would you most want to have good fixtures at the start of next season?

United for me. Would love the temptation to get Depay.. A quick, direct winger with an eye for goal? Yes please.

You didn't say FPL, I'd say Liverpool because they'll need it. 😉 Seriously though I think some good fixtures for Arsenal would be nice, I think Walcott could be great to have at the start at least.

To be fair, I like Depay just as a player. So I'd love to have a player like that firing in my FPL team.

Feo's a good shout though with Sanchez likely to be away. More chance of him getting in the team.
