The Digest – Gameweek 31

Southampton’s in-form frontman spearheads a dramatic win over Liverpool. Norwich’s bid for survival takes a step in the right direction, whilst Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane stake yet another claim to remain in our wildcards plans for the run-in, despite the lack of a double.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Southampton’s stunning comeback win over Liverpool continued Graziano Pelle’s recent return to form.

Having bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Stoke in the previous Gameweek, the Italian served up a 15-point haul on Saturday – his highest of the season – to take his tally to nine goals and seven assists in 20 league starts.

Pelle’s weekend haul means he’s racked up 28 points in the last two Gameweeks – put into perspective, Sergio Aguero has produced 30 points in his previous seven.

Granted, the Saints’ lack of a double Gameweek is a major deterrent for any would-be investors with wildcards in hand right now. Nonetheless, Pelle’s penchant for going on scoring streaks – he racked up four goals and five assists in five outings between Gameweeks 4-8 – suggests he could still thrive as a Fantasy option over the run-in.

Sitting just four points off fourth spot, the Saints’ testing trip to Leicester is then followed by a trio of encounters with Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences. With a Champions League spot still in the balance, the Italian’s renewed confidence may well prove decisive as Ronald Koeman’s side look to build momentum on the back of their weekend win against the Merseysiders.

The Team

Whilst Newcastle and Sunderland had to settle for a point apiece in the Tyne-Wear derby, relegation rivals Norwich distanced themselves from the bottom three with a vital away win at West Brom.

Having ground out a goalless draw with City the previous weekend, Alex Neil’s men managed to nullify a Baggies side that had picked up ten points in four, thanks to a trio of wins over Everton, Palace and United and a draw at the King Power.

With their confidence on the up, Norwich are showing they have the stomach for a fight and the stats show they have tightened up considerably at the back, conceding just one big chance over their last four matches. For those who have already played their wildcards, the likes of Timm Klose – with five bonus points collected over the last two – is emerging as a late-season budget enabler at 4.2. Wes Hoolahan, with two goals and a pair of assists in his last four home fixtures, and weekend goal hero Robbie Brady (two goals in his last four starts) may prove influential in the absence of the injured Nathan Redmond.

Up next for the Carrow Road club is a trio of fixtures that may ultimately determined their top-flight status. The Canaries entertain both Newcastle and Sunderland in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a trip to Selhurst Park – where Palace have lost six on the bounce – sandwiched in between.

With a double Gameweek 37 offering back-to-back home encounters against United and Watford, Norwich may yet harbour some Fantasy appeal as Neil attempts to prevent a slide back into the Championship.

The Talking Point

Last week’s double Gameweek announcements give us plenty to plan and prepare for over the current international break.

As we look to assemble our squads to take advantage of the remaining schedule, there’s a concern that going “all in” on the double Gameweek sides, and using a bench boost chip to field 15 players with a pair of fixtures, may be a little overzealous.

This is compounded by the recent showings of Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane, who are becoming increasingly crucial to their side’s title bids.

Whereas Jamie Vardy has scored just once in the last seven Gameweeks, Mahrez has averaged 6.7 points over the same period and netted Leicester’s winner in two of the last three. Kane 16-point return at home to Bournemouth, meanwhile, means he has delivered successive double-figure hauls for the first time this term. At a time when Sergio Aguero is struggling for form, the Spurs man has proven a very capable armband alternative.

The Gameweek 35 schedule, where six teams – including five of the sides with doubles in the previous round of fixtures – also has to be factored into our planning. Whilst the likes of West Ham, Everton and United face the weekend off, Leicester and Spurs are both handed home comforts, with Mahrez hosting Swansea and Kane welcoming West Brom to the Lane.

Given that the duo are two of the three most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, with 68% and 46% ownerships respectively, parting company won’t come without risk – Mahrez has 11 double-figure hauls to his name this season, whilst Kane is now up to seven, highlighting their explosive potential.

Whilst the allure of the double Gameweeks is irresistible, maintaining a balance to our 15-man squads – in terms of both form players and fixtures – will be key. Obviously, opting for a double Gameweek player could pay off but given their current levels of form and reliability, is parting company with one, or both, an unnecessary risk too far?

Hennesey might be a good shout. Never underestimate Man Utd and Arsenal's ability to hit the ball straight at the goalkeeper - owners just have to hope he doesn't dive out of the way.

    DGW Team Options (Have wildcarded GW32);

    Would you rather have;

    Rojo / Mangala / Wijnaldum
    Smalling / Otamendi / Lingard

    Rest of team is;

    Robles / Elliot
    Bellerin / Kosc / Dawson
    Sanchez / Firmino / Coutinho / Payet
    Lukaku / Sturridge / Martial

Biggest worry I can see at the moment for WC33 is the awfulness (word?) of the fixtures for the team you'll create.

If I look at my WC team, this is the best team I can put out for that week, especially if I'm rolling the FT to have 2 for GW35 blanks:

    Migs (STK)
One of the 5.3 City assets (WBA) Delaney (NOR) Janmaat (sot)
Ozil (WHU) Mahrez (sun) Coutinho (STK) Payet (ars)
Lukaku (wat) Kane (MUN) Aguero (WBA. C)
    DDG / Lingard Monreal Olsson
    0.4 ITB

Doesn't exactly look plum, does it!?

        Who you going with Andy?

        Kane (bad fixtures)
        Kun (bad away form)
        Lukaku (nothing to play for)
        Martial (out wide)
        Welbeck (high rotation risk)
        Sturridge (high risk in general)
Deeney/Ighalo (mediocre fixtures, nothing to play for.

I'd love Rashford to keep playing, he'd be a nailed member of my DGW team!

Idk though, I can't quite look past the premium frontline of Lu-Ka-Ku for the rest of the season now... if I sold Kane I'd never be able to buy him back, and going Kun-less leaves you so exposed (there will be many casual TCs on him in the DGW, regardless of fixtures)

Man, you're such a king, down in 15k here.

Rooney is such an annoying factor - not a United fan, but they (and England!) play better without having to wedge him in whenever I've watched them, he just seems to slow the play down and demand the ball without doing much with it 8 in 10 times.

Hopefully Rashford keeps his spot, but I can't see it happening once Roondog is back to full fitness - he and Martial will lead the line and Rashford might (though hopefully not!!) return to Chicarito-esque impact sub status. I really hope he's done enough to keep Rooney out of the side but I'm sure he hasn't. Ergo, too much of a risk for me.

Will probably just go DDG / Lingard for my United choices, given no GW35.

      Hey IM!

Yeah Pelle seems great, BUT as I was saying to HVT above I can't quite see past Lu-Ka-Ku for the front 3 spots for the rest of the season; Lukaku is perhaps the most vulnerable to being supplanted by someone else, but his value will surely skyrocket once people realise he has 3 DGWs coming up...

          Wait but why? (genuinely curious!)

For me, he's the spearhead of a productive attack in a title chasing team, motivated with everything to play for. Plus he's so widely owned that non-DGWs will have a serious differential over you if he performs in his single game.

Plus, IDK what your buy value was but I got him in for GW8 at 9.2 and he's now 10.4! No way I'd be able to afford to get him back in if I remove him!

Just interested to hear your thoughts!

I got Kane in last week at 10.2.. SV of 10.3 now, so I really don't mind selling.

Looking at his returns this season.. he has only returned more than 1 goal in the following matches:

bou, WHU, NOR, SUN, nor, avl, BOU

            His next few fixtures read:

liv, MUN, stk, WBA, che, SOU

So I can't see him getting any huge hauls worthy of holding him over a DGW player, especially when he's so expensive. The only problem is, I'm not tempted by many DGW strikers.. Martial/Rashford/Sturridge/Welbeck are all risky in terms of playing up front, so I'm now considering Pelle as an "enabler"..

            1. Individual
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 2 months ago

Oh cool, yeah I see. I think the SV issue for me is such a big factor that I can't get rid of him, plus my ML rival (I'm 15 behind) has used his WC and will keep Kane - it's a big exposure for me not to have him.

Also, as you say, none of the DGW strikers have come to the fore. It's those from the big teams or an enabler like Rondon or Andy Carroll or Deeney which all have their own problems.

Hence why I'm thinking Kane I'll keep, along with Mahrez.

BUT of course many things can happen in internationals and intervening week - one huge injury could mean so many DGW plans just go out the window.

Imagine what an injury to Aguero would do all of our planning...

He's a huge troll and I don't rate him highly.. but he's shown in the past that he's almost Rooney-esque in that when he starts doing well he tends to have a good few weeks before drying up (when everyone owns him)

    B - Martial
    C - Rashford
    D - Lukaku
    E - Kane
    F - Sturridge

    What will yours be?

Agreed - I'm working my notice atm so lots of time to sit on FPL / FFS and play around.

It's a tinkerer's paradise - feels a bit like GW0 except on speed because you have some data on player form to inform your choice. So many variables.

I've found it impossible to fit a few things (LuKaKun front line PLUS 2x Premium Arsenal mids) already, so I'm kind of glad I've started looking.

Beginning to worry about value changes and kind of want to press the button now to "lock in" the players I want. But then I guess I'm just overthinking it and need to step away

I think your 3rd paragraph is the issue here for most, if not everyone.

I'm trying to get a frontline of rashford, Lukakaaa and Aguero with enough money itb to bring Kane in the following week.

        1. Individual
          • 10 Years

I got Kane at 9.2 in GW8, so I'd struggle to not gut my bank if I sold him and tried to bring him back - I do like Rashford a lot, but I can see him playing much less time when Rooney returns to the fold, sadly.

It's still 25 days to the DGW weekend, and lots could happen - as I've said in other comments, imagine what an injury to a big fish like Aguero, Kane or someone like that could do to our planning. Aguero in particular (not that I wish ill on anyone!) if shattered again releases SO much value for our teams, as we saw during the time he was injured this season and there was no real "template" as there was a lot of extra £££ floating around.

Ugh... the uncertainty is already killing me 😉

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    DGWK second thoughts

Who is having second thoughts about fielding a full 15 with a wildcard and bench boost for GWK 34?

Is the form of single gameweekers too good to ignore?

Would it be better to wait until Gameweek 36 and 37 to go for bench boost and wildcarding?

Is there a real danger that all our planning and patience will be for nothing as single gameweekers run riot and double Gameweekers flop in Gameweek 34.

Too late for me now - not enough DGW's for 34.

I'm happy though. Don't see a bench boost team that excites me for GW37 at all.

The more i think about it, the more it seems to me that i will ditch Kane in GW33 and bring him back for GW 35 or 36. Having frontline of Kun, Lukaku and Aguero kills the rest of your team, while if you get someone like Rashford, who in my opinion have good chance of at least matching Kane points with his DGW you get extra 6mil to spend on your team.
The way i see it, if i keep Kane i need to take much more risk when choosing players because the likes of Smaling and Belerin will be too expensive and i will need to take a chance with Rojo or Gabriel who might not get both games.
I will probably go only with Mahrez, mainly because of the value i have attached to him.

      DDG* - Elliot*
      Bellerin* - Kosc/Smalling* - Reid/Rojo* - Fuchs - Simpson
      Ozil* - Firmino/Coutinho* - Payet* - Mahrez - Alli/Antonio/Lanzini*
      Kun* - Lukaku* - Welbeck/Kane/Pelle

10 DGWers roughly is plenty for me.

I can get 10 DGW players in GW34 without hits/WC, so 91% of my XI will be DGWers that GW, plus I will keep hold of Kane, Mahrez etc. WC36 so 15 DGW players in GW37.

WC template seems to have about 12 DGWers, so playing BB means only 80% of the 15 will be DGWers, plus DGW37 team will be questionable.

Is looking ever more like WC36 is the way forward, if you can get a decent number of DGWers in GW34 based on your current team (which is when the pre-planning from weeks ago is starting to bear its fruits)

When I asked the Scoutcast team how many Spurs/Leicester players you'd be keeping almost everyone said Mahrez and that would be it (except Andy who was considering ditching all of them).

Funny how things have changed in such a short space of time 🙂

I did say it would be hard to ditch Mahrez though - even when I got all excited about 15 DGW players.

Unfortunately my team value + the blanks in GW35 have all but killed the dream 🙁

You did which is why I said 'considering' 🙂

I've honestly thought all along that 15 DGW players is too many. I want to go into GW34 all guns blazing but if it's at the cost of a decent score in GWs 33, 35, 36... then it's not worth it.

I said Fuchs if I recall. Still wondering if he may be best placed given Leicester's 1-0 status. Plus he's really cheap, well he was when I got him at least.

For me it's all about which week to triple captain, as I think that has the most potential. Then BB the other GW. Leaning towards Özil/Sancez TC in GW34, and then necessarily BB in GW37. But also very much depends on when EVE/CPL is scheduled - might be impossible to ignore Lukaku TC if in GW36 or 37

My team is structured all wrong, even with a couple of hits i cant get the dgw players i want without pressing WC reset 33

i think im coming down to aguero + mahrez or sanchez + kane. May still keep fuchs as well, could very easily outscore janmaat or evans 2 games and more chance with the 5 other games counting as well where there are no doubles.

13 dgw players + 2 quality single is still a good use of bench boost

Presumably most of the people who are definitely keeping Mahrez have had him since the early days of the season. I sold him and brought him back in again so he still cost me 7.2m.

He's average 6.4 points in the five weeks I've had him back. So although he's doing well, the double gameweek alternative's don't have to do *that* well to match or outscore him.

Kane, on the other hand, is a different matter...

Will only be able to field 8 double gameweekers without hits for GW34 and 2 of those would be Hennessey and Dawson.

        I'm definitely wildcarding 33, BB34 and TC37.

Single gameweekers I'm keeping will prob just be Kane but others considering Mahrez and maybe a Leicester defender - Morgan or Simpson as they are cheapest.

Kane & Mahrez - nailed for season. Too good to ignore. Too exposed to non-DGWers / non-FFSers / non-WCers / "casuals" if they score big and you don't have them in your team. Could be a task to bring back into your team if you bought at a low sale value.

A lot of uncertainty r.e. chip order BUT the only thing that's swayed me is the excellent article (I forget who did it!) that showed that starts are more nailed on in GW34 than in 37 for players, which has swayed me into thinking 14 dgwers plus 2 sgwers is a decent formula given the fact that we may see rotation en masse in 37, plus a lot of teams with zero to play for "already on the beach". We have to accommodate a few of these players from teams with zero motivation - at least things are less fixed in terms of final league position etc etc in 34 than in the penultimate week of the season.

GW37 triple captain on Payet, with the last game at the Boleyn Ground for WHU, is looking very probable for me

As I said, Gooner, sale value is my issue here, along with being exposed to potential points vs. my ML rivals who have already used wildcard / are holding it for GW37.

I don't think I'd be able to buy back either Mahrez or Kane if I switch them out - seems folly to remove the key players in title-chasing, highly-motivated teams. I'll have 14 DGWers, so it's not like I'm missing out too much. And those two have proven that they can score highly in a match. So I think I'm more inclined to keep than shift!

Obviously, your own interpretation comes into play 🙂

If you WC in GW36 though, you will have a much better of idea of who is more likely to play in both matches based on who was something to play for etc, which will be a massive advantage of those who are stuck with a load of legacy players from DGW34 who may well have nothing to play for and be likely to be subject to rotation.

Yep, true - I see what you mean, Jarvish

However, when the DGW36 bandwagon got going I didn't have sufficient players in DGW34 to plan transfers to get an XI, so I think I'm stuck with 34 BB / 37 TC.

15 sounds lovely, but ultimately I think it'll leave my team unbalanced for the weeks after. Everton's double in 34 looks poisony chalicy, but I am toying with the idea of just doing the weekly swap between Kane & Luka, and get Kane back in for 35. Not sure how much Luka will get from S'hampton & Pool tho, is there a point to getting him at all? Risky to go without I guess. Or is it? All will be revealed... Or will it? I'm going on a bit now. Or am I? I am.

Having second thoughts. Was all set to WC33 and BB34. Now want to keep Kane, Mahrez and Simpson. Possibly Toby. Easy to play 7DGW plus these 4 without hits in 34. If Palace v Everton is set for GW36 or later, a WC in 36 is seriously tempting.

WC in 33. Set team up for 34 and beyond. 11 dgws and 4 sgws. BB.

        TC in 37.

Watch 36 WC fail due to rot.

        Simples.

wildcard in 36 for me. I still think Man U and west ham will be in the running for champions league spot so not much rotation.
Norwich and sunderland will still be fighting for their lives so not much chance of rotation.

I will see how Liverpool are doing by then. They might have nothing to play for along with Chelsea but may still have a chance to top 4.
A lot of assumptions I know but I can have 9 dgw players for 34 with a -4 hit so may as well reward my planning for holding out to DGW37 and go out in a blaze of glory with probably 14 on the bench boost. Keep Ozil in my team and then bring in 2 more Arsenal players for their final week against Villa!

Tactically the hardest thing to plan for of all time! Knowing the right way is very tough. I'm concerned WC for DGW34 could easily backfire. Alli netting and assisting away at Stoke outscoring Firmino (rested for Bournemouth with Dortmund and the Derby upcoming within a week). City flagging, especially away from home. United at home to Watford could have conceeded several, do we really want to ditch Butland and the money tied up on him? So many difficult decisions. I might just take a couple of hits and field 10 DGWers keeping Alli, Kane, Butland, Mahrez, Simpson and unleash my TC on Alexis which I think is the best TC choice out of any of the DGWs left - unless Everton get a TGW. Leaves me with a great chance to WC later on. Alot will depend on what my ML rivals do, don't fancy pulling the trigger on my WC early if they don't.

Think early WCers might need to be brave and ditch Kane and Alli. Would enable:

          DDG/Adrian
          Bellerin/Olsson/Rojo/Clyne/Simpson
          Ozil/Alexis(TC)/Payet/Firmino/Mahrez

I have used my bench boost but still have triple captin and wild card left, but I'm not to worried as I can wild card a week later (probably 34) and keep a strong bench with Kane, Ali etc and have a better team for 33 and 35 then people who have maxed out on 15 dgw's and if you have a bench of single game weekers then why save it until now? Also people with chips left (except wild card) are forgetting that you do score points for using them early!

I am WCing in 33, hadn't planned on DGW players earlier, so WC is the best option for me,

I think I'll go 12/13+3/2 with my WC team, coz it's important to consider whether the spurs & Leicester replacements are good enough

Winajldum (2) might be outscored by mahrez (1) I might hold Fuchs

But essentially, it's whether the replacements will outscore spurs leceister, can't see too many in form right now

        Yes,
Ithink it is better to wildcard for 37 your team is still maintained for 34 as in Keeping Kane Mahrez Alli and but still getting in dgwers
In 37 you can afford to sell more of Vahrez and Kaldi
