What The Fixtures and Form Say – Gameweek 15 Captaincy

This article aims to help Fantasy Premier League Managers in their choice for the best captaincy option for the forthcoming Gameweek by combining form, fixtures and bookies odds.

In Gameweek 14, the model’s top pick, Harry Kane, delivered attacking returns in what was a high-scoring Gameweek for the many who backed the Spurs frontman. Those who backed joint second on last week’s list, Alexis Sanchez, fared even better.

The Tottenham striker’s brace means this strategy now has a six out of eight success rate (success is derived from whether the model’s top pick delivers attacking returns or not).

Before I take a look at Gameweek 15’s best captaincy targets, let’s have a quick recap on how I use form and fixtures to come to achieve this.

REFINING THE ODDS

This article will now focus more on the form and fixtures elements and offer the bookies odds combined element at the end of the results table.

For this method, I am going to take the 10 most popular captaincy options (at time of writing, according to the FFScout captaincy poll and rank them 1-10 ranking according to the difficulty of the fixture, which is worked out using goals conceded, big chances conceded and shots in the box (Sib) conceded from the last four games.

I then apply the same ranking to form, looking at points per game, goals and assists over the last four games. This article will now factor in the players PPG from their last 2 home and last 2 away games respectively, higher weighting will be given according to the player’s fixture. E.g. if a player is playing in an away fixture, their away PPG will be taken into account, if 2 players PPG’s are still the same, then the players total PPG will be taken into account. This will give a new and detailed look into each player’s respective form.

I understand that the odds segment can sometimes heavily outweigh others (e.g. Aguero is always likely to be low odds for scoring) so from now on, the total rank column at the end of the results table will include odds factored in, for those who like their odds taken into account.

With that in mind, let’s take at Gameweek 15’s results.

Analysis

Taking form and fixtures into account, Sadio Mane is the most likely to deliver attacking returns according to this method. He faces a West Ham side that has conceded 10 goals, 11 big chances and 41 goal attempts in the box in the last four Gameweeks. Combine this with an impressive 9.5 home points per game for the Liverpool winger and he represents a standout captaincy option this week.

Reports earlier this week have indicated the Senegalese forward has returned to training and should be available for the weekend.

FPL managers, who prefer looking at only the fixture element, need look no further than Jermain Defoe this week.

The Sunderland forward faces an away trip to Swansea, who have conceded a massive 13 goals, 12 big chances and 41 goal attempts in the box in the last four Gameweeks. Swans boss Bob Bradley has only just recently arrived in South Wales but is already under immense pressure to improve performances and results. An open-game may occur, which could provide the space needed for the Sunderland striker to exploit.

A home-time against West Brom should be an enticing prospect for FPL managers wanting to back Diego Costa and Eden Hazard this week but this method urges caution. West Brom have only conceded three goals, a trio of big chances and 19 goal attempts in the box in the last four Gameweeks, placing the Chelsea stars low down at joint ninth on the fixture table.

In terms of home form Eden Hazard is top, registering an impressive 10.5 home PPG, indicating that he is the more secure armband option in what will be a classic form versus fixture dilemma for his owners.

Thanks. Pretty conclusive in favour of Mane. Don't own him but wish I did now.

Hazard for me based on those excellent form stats, even if WBA may put up a fight.

Given the closeness of some of the fixtures in difficulty, you could argue that the way the fixture difficulty table works it over rates Chelseas fixture difficulty. Lukaku away at Watford is 4.5 but Chelsea home to WBA is 9 a big difference when calculating the overall points but in my opinion the fixture aren't too different in difficulty.

Do you think on the occasions that there are many plum fixtures/caption options the fixture difficult skew the results? All in all great information. Think I'll go same as you with Hazard, no Mane and just not confident in Firmino at the moment.

I think the penalty takers may prove the real differential for the armband this week. With Bilic`s job on the line I don`t see Westham opening up, and given they normally play fairly well against Liverpool, I may be tempted with Hazard as capitano ahead of Firmino and Mane. Benteke anyone?

    Aguero/Lukaku/Allen > Defoe/Ibrahimovic/Eriksen (-4)

Do it this week or wait until after the Spurs/Utd game?

Thanks for the response. Yes, I'm edging toward it, just not sure if I should do it this week or wait until after United/Spurs and avoid the hit.

With the changes, the team would be:

        Grant/Pickford
        Holebas/Pieters/Evans/Barragan/Amat
        Sanchez/Firmino/Eriksen/Sigurdsson/Capoue
        Ibrahimovic/Costa/Defoe

Pretty strong now I look at it, but budget defence...

You would probably (at least I've been thinking) want to get at least one Spurs or Chelsea defenders for the coming fixtures. But then again, you mid and forwards look like they could produce a fair bit of points..

I've had Mane almost all season and no question I'd say he's the most likely to deliver attacking returns.

Problem is, he's allergic to bonus. So he has to work much harder for a big score than Haz or Sanchez. That plus the minor knock last week, make me happy owning Mane but perhaps not captaining him. We will see...

    Good morning Gentlemen,

I seek your advice. I'm all but convinced by Theos performance the last couple of weeks, even after his goal against Bournemouth. I've considered a more defense approach while i can't really find a good lateral swap for him... what do you reckon?

    A) Walcott, Jenkinson & Coleman  > Can, Alonso & Alderweireld -8
    B) Walcott & Coleman  > Can (Alonso or Alderweireld) -4
    C) Walcott > Can to free up funds
    D) Walcott > to ?

I am keen on getting Spurs midfielders, but with Son being the only one I can afford and him not being 100% in the XI I'm not too sure..

    Pickford
    Cedric, McAuley, Coleman
    Firminio, Hazard, Siggy, Walcott
    Kane, Costa, Austin

    Subs: Jakupovic, Jenkinsson, Amat Snoddy

Might need to captain Can as he's my only Pool cover 🙂

I'm surprised Sanchez hasn't come out higher to be honest. Stoke have major defensive injury concerns ahead of the game as well with Shawcross and Martins Indi doubts and Cameron and Bardsley out for sure.

    Sanchez for me.

I agree. This analysis doesnt take this factor. Also fact Stoke had a run if easy fixtures recently and with injuries they are not really solid in defence. Alexis can do much damage again as he is on fire!

Best replacement for Leicester's Morgan? Cedric, Lovren, Brunt currently in mind.
Rest of the defence are Love, Amat, Pieters, Alonso.

Have Sanchez, Hazard and Costa as options but think I'll take a differential punt on Anichebe against the stuttering Swansea defence. His attacking and goal attempts stats in the previous 4 weeks have been as impressive as anyones, and even more impressive than Defoes, except for his conversion ratio letting him down a little. Might roll the dice with him, no doubt it will probably explode in my face.

He was clearly not fit that game though. Besides he was the only creative attacking midfielder which meant his role was to create space and chances for his teammates. Expect a much more lethal performance in the weekend with improved fitness and Lallana back.

It seems that the definition of "success rate" changes week by week.

If the top 6 on the FFS poll all score or assist then you are claiming a success even if your 'system' picks the lowest points return among them.

I wish my bookmaker worked on that basis. 😕

The definition of success hasn't changed since I restarted doing them this season. I would say a captaincy success comes down to whether they deliver attacking returns regardless of other options. This article is simply to try and help people in their captaincy choice for the week, it's as simple as that. You complained about the odds, that factor has gone completely and is now offered as a side note if people want to use it.

Saying "I wish my bookmaker worked like this' has no connection with what this article is trying to do. It's not about 'beating the bookies anymore'. How about putting your effort into concentrating on one of your many teams instead?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

Nonsense. Success has moved from identifying the best captain to identifying any vaguely halfway successful captain.

How you can count Kane as a success for your captaincy system when Sanchez scored 11 points more is beyond me. Unless you think that predicting that Kane would manage either a goal or assist at home to a Swansea team that had just conceded 4 at home to Palace is an achievement?

"We will have to look at the way we defend and try to come up with ways to try to improve it. Some of the goals we concede are calamitous." Curtis after the Palace game.

I made a fairly mild comment and would have left it at that had you not responded with irrelevant slurs and falsehoods. I did not complain about the bookies' odds, I just took the trouble to let you know when you had them in the wrong order. I'd have thought that would be received as help.

As for the myth of my "many teams", it is exactly that - a myth. Psychological studies have consistently shown that oft-repeated statements, embroideries or exaggerations are more likely to be perceived as true, regardless of their actual veracity. Which is unfortunate for me in this case. But what the hey, this is a game. If people want to get their panties twisted about some "illusory truth" or other that's up to them.

Haha listen to this person are your serious? How can you count Kane as a success.....so he wasn't a success? A Sanchez Hattie and assist very very rarely happens. Previous articles have been good and accurate. You make it sound as if Kane and Sanchez were just guaranteed to go big which makes me think you really don't know much about football. To think your comments come across as helpful is woeful. Yep ladies and gents we have another melt!

First sentence of the GW14 article: "This article aims to find out the best Fantasy Premier League captaincy option for the forthcoming Gameweek by combining form, fixture and bookies odds."

              Was that Kane?

Actually, scrub that. Scrub all my comments. I am clearly dealing with a sacred cow. So I'll just revert to "never read, never comment" where this article is concerned. Simpler that way.

What I will say is that I've taken every bit of constructive criticism on board and tried to adapt the method accordingly. That's the odds part, implied probability, increasing the numbers of options considered, taking into account home and away ppg to hopefully improve the form section and the result seems to be being received mainly positively. No perfect formula exists anywhere.

Agree that no formula is perfect that's why we have standards of errors. It's up to one to read and ascertain if it's a viable method. Carry on YMA! Thanks for the effort to write this weekly. Always looking fwd.

Note: Who you captaining this week? Up against your team

Of course constructive criticism is allowed, but nobody is forcing them to follow your "advice".

Let's be fair, the Sanchez haul or indeed any hat-trick+assist from a midfielder, is a bit of an outlier.

Certainly it's a bit harsh to say Kane was a fail.

If it wasn't for my Kane captaincy, my birthday weekend would have been in tatters. I'd count Kane as a success personally, but it's not for me to set YMA's criteria.

Fair play to him for producing this superb article and sticking his neck out week-to-week.

In fairness though he does have a bit of a point
By coincidence it always used to annoy me when you seen those online betting experts who would declare they got a 40-1 treble up yesterday without mentioning they predicted 25 bets that didn't win. I have learned never to listen to anyone online who claims to be an expert at betting since those days.
I was thinking if maybe it should be highlighting the opposite with the top six and showing who is more likely to fail, if this is possible.
Just a thought that I try and put across in a nice and unarrogant manner

though in hindsight even this is being a bit picky, ultimately the article is about offering helpful info on your likely cap choice, it isn't about if YMA is a god who can pick you the highest scorer every week.
Up until this discussion this is how I have always looked at it and used it to confirm my thoughts on cap choice if I have the player mentioned or help me pick if I am unsure.
I remember a scene in the gladiator film where the senator was advising the emperor about a fish who sits and waits for ages to attack at the right moment and this is what the bookies nephew/ psychologist seems to have done.

keep up the good work YMA you sacred cow you

A Liverpool captian comes with high risk, as the weekly high point score typically changes from week to week amount their many attacking threats. Could see Origi taking a big haul this week as easily as Firmino or Mane.

      Hi, guys!
      GK : Grant, Pickford
CB : Alonso, McAuley, Smith, Cedric, Amat
MF : Sanchez, Firmino, Sigurdsson, Capoue, Allen
      FW : Aguero, Kane, Vokes

just replace Aguero to Costa, so i have 2.8 in the bank.
i need advice for Allen/Capoue & Vokes replacement coz they value looks alike going to fall this weekend.
what about Walcott & Llorente for this week? gtg?
