Team Of The Season – Tom Heaton

Following a 150-point campaign in 2014/15 with Burnley, Tom Heaton was quickly installed on many pre-season watchlists. The early adopters were to be proved correct as the Claret’s keeper excelled to deliver another outstanding top-flight season.

Heaton proved to be the perfect “fire and forget” option for our 15-man squads, providing consistent returns right until the final weeks of the season.

Such was Heaton’s dominance as the stand-out option, he gained selection in our Team of the Season with a massive 77% of the vote.

The Statistics

With a starting price of just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and based on his 2014/15 output, it was something of a surprise to see Heaton only owned by 144,402 managers back in Gameweek 1.

The England international first displayed his potential as a budget option with a 10-point haul in the 2-0 victory over Liverpool in Gameweek 2, when he picked up his first maximum bonus point haul.

That ability to dominate the bonus points whenever Sean Dyche’s side kept a clean sheet would prove pivotal to Heaton’s appeal throughout the season.

He only delivered one more clean sheet prior to Gameweek 10, when he registered his second double-digit score of the season in the goalless draw against his former side Manchester United.

The Burnley keeper made 11 saves at Old Trafford – already the second time in the season he’d reached that figure in a single match – and scooped maximum bonus points once again.

A calf injury then forced him to miss two matches before he embarked on his most productive run.

Between Gameweeks 16 and 23, Heaton averaged 6.1 points per match (ppm) in a spell which included three clean sheets, eight save points, a penalty stop and 11 bonus points.

It was during this period that his price in FPL hit the 5.0 mark, with more than 800,000 managers owning the Burnley captain by Gameweek 24.

Heaton maintained his form with a further three shut-outs between Gameweeks 29 and 32 and finished the campaign with 10 clean sheets from 35 starts, with six of those coming at Turf Moor.

His price and ownership peaked in Gameweek 33, at 5.2 and 900,000 respectively, although Dyche’s men did fail to record a clean sheet in five of their last six encounters.

Heaton ended the season as the top scoring goalkeeper in FPL with 149 points – one shy of his 2014/15 tally.

He averaged 4.3 ppm, significantly better than any Burnley defender, with Michael Keane the next best with 3.2 ppm.

His total of 21 bonus points set a new record for an FPL keeper in a season, surpassing Vito Mannone’s 16 points gained with Sunderland in 2013/14.

Heaton also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million across all four positions.

The Prospects

Due to his impressive production in 2016/17, a price hike for Heaton seems almost inevitable, although if he remains under the 5.5 mark, he will doubtless prove a popular option once again.

Given that Dyche’s men eventually finished 16th in the Premier League, a price point of 5.0 would appear likely.

Heaton has shown over two seasons that he can be relied upon for around 10 clean sheets, as well as save and bonus points, so that price should still represent solid value.

Something to monitor will be the future of centre-back Keane, who is expected to leave the club in the summer.

Keane’s outstanding performances at the heart of the Clarets defence brought him his England debut in March, and he would need to be adequately replaced in order for the Burnley rearguard to remain as resilient next season.

Heaton’s ability to keep clean sheets in less difficult home matches is the primary reason for his appeal as a Fantasy asset.

But as he demonstrated with his two double-figure hauls on the road, he also has the ability to produce in any match via save points.

While 4.5 options are always popular when budgets are tight at the start of a season, Heaton’s output over the last nine months suggests that we can’t overlook him when we begin to formulate our 15-man squads in July.

Jordan Pickford’s destination and price could influence matters, but Heaton could well remain the obvious one-stop shop option again, paired with a £4.0m asset – perhaps even Burnley’s second keeper – in a £9.0m configuration.

Domestically he's been a shambles. He spent a near 200 million and delivered 6th place.

A lucky EL run playing poor sides doesn't change that. The football his team play is horrible, boring and in large unwatchable to the everyday punter. His tactics are a decade stale, his attitude and personality stink and he alienated and embarrasses players galore.

his next job will be international, no top side who want to win the CL and leagues of any note will go for someone who's clearly lost his magic touch. Those days of Madrod, Chelsea and soon United will be gone for Jose and it's his own stubborn fault.

A win is a win, they arent playing to entertain everyone, they are playing to win things... A 1-0 win is better than being on a losing side of 4-3 game.

Plus that team/squad isnt good enough to play attacking football anyway

Because they were concentrating more on UCL qualification and winning Europa is an easy ticket.

That squad is just isnt quality enough to compete at top level, Jose cant really do anything huge with that squad.

He spent huge money in the summer,he has himself to blame if he could not create the ideal squad and still Pogba,Rooney,Ibra,Mkhitaryan,De Gea are all big names IMO

I'm not a United supporter btw or anything close to that... Blaming Jose for his tactics just doesnt feel right.

They were close to chances created and number of shots for first half I guess? Probably not so boring...

I wouldn't be so sure, he will spend an absolute fortune in the summer and the additional goals he buys will help turn those draws into wins in the league.

He looked on the verge of a nervous breakdown before the Europa League win but that may have relived some of the stress.

Personally cannot stand the man, but we're a good way of his decline. He is very motivated to win trophies.

He's a cantankerous individual but there are few better coaches than him and a really smart guy. Remarkable he's done so well and he never even kicked a ball.

Can be charming and witty when he wants to be:

I think it depends on what you want. If you want trophies by any means necessary then Mourinho does a very good job. If you want to be entertained then less so. Personally, if I was a Utd season ticket holder and paying a fortune for home games, I'd want more for my money. Football is supposed to be an escape and enjoyable at the end of the day.

If there was no Champions League qualification through the Europa League, Mourinho would have prioritised the PL and would have played his second team in the Europa. Ever since Man Utd got into the last 16, Mourinho has been saying that he is prioritising the Europa League. Otherwise Man Utd were right up in the top 4 battle after winning against Chelsea.

Getting to the Champions League by winning the Europa League is better than finishing 4th in the PL, and maybe even 3rd because

      1) You directly get into the Champions League group stages unlike Liverpool who need to win their qualifiers. Liverpool may get a tough opponent in Napoli or Sevilla

      2) You get a trophy.

      3) You get to play the Super Cup and have a chance of winning another silverware.

Another reason why winning the Europa League is better than finishing 2nd - 4th is the boost in coeffeicient. If Man Utd had gone out in EL group stage and finished 4th then their coefficient would be 20 points lower and they would be in pot 3 of next year's CL rather than pot 2 they now find themselves in. That might not sound much but it should give them a far more favourable draw than Spurs (who will be pot 3). Those coeffecient points earned this season last 5 years so that could make a difference in future years as well.

Man Utd's run also helped in the national coefficient rankings as England stayed ahead of Italy to ensure the 4th spot remained a CL place for another season.

      As a neutral I think you're pretty spot-on.
He's a vile specimen of a human being, I could not and would not pay to watch tat ManU team at the moment and I'm not convinced much will change as Mourinho seems set in his bitter little ways and he'll see these 'successes' as vindication for his methods.
Why doesn't China offer him big bucks to go there and give us all a break.

I'd go for Root in game 1 as captain but in truth any of England's top 4 are options. Roy is devastating in the powerplay but generally fails to bat through, Hales less aggressive but more likely to bat on past the powerplay. Root is just so much safer but if £££ is the reason then Morgan is in great form, Stokes might not be worth the £££ if he doesn't bowl.

Rashid takes wickets regardless of the pitch(all will be hard and flat at the Champs trophy) and generally Moeen won't get enough balls to make a big score at #7.

He score 77 last match against Safrica, even after coming at 7. 50 ivers is a lot of time. Player of his class agaisnt that BD attack.
He is highly underrated I feel, and he has always paid off for me in earlier games. Gonna trust that experience.

Scoring in the champions trophy game is the most balanced I have ever seen. Usually bowlers get too much for taking cheap wickets at the end or the crazy striker rate bonus for late hitting ruined the game. Not this time should be good

A young GK if DDG goes to Real - Donnarumma would be good. Pickford as well if he can improve from this impressive season.

A top-class CB who's a mainstay in his national side - preferable Marquinhos, although Mourinho may pull another Bailly and get someone else instead. Keane or VVD would be okay too.

A holding midfielder to take over from Carrick in the long run - Verratti or Matuidi maybe even Renato

      A marquee forward - Griezmann!

And most importantly if DDG does go to Real, I don't care what the price is, but we better make it a swap transfer and prise one of their stars out: Kroos, Varane, Morata, Bale in order of decreasing preference.

And one or two other players who have been unearthed out of nowhere and who have impressed Mourinho personally (a full-back here would be nice)

A cautionary tale - On the eve of the 2016/17 season, the Telegraph highlighted 10 stars of pre-season. Here's the who's who and how they got on.

Eric Lamela - Pre-Season - a goal and 2 assists against Inter Milan plus a goal against Juventus.
FPL Season - Scored against Everton in GW1, added an assist against Liverpool in GW3. No further points and last sighted in GW9.
Notes - Transformed Tottenham's season by being unavailable after October.

Ahmed Musa, Leicester's record £16.6m signing, who scored 2 goals in 20 mins against Barcelona.
During the league season, he scored 2 goals in 761 minutes and lasted 90 mins just once (GW1).
Just googled him, he's had a busy week.

Alex Iwobi - 2 goals in an 8-0 win against Viking, plus a goal against Man City.
    3 goals, 5 assists, 89 points.
    Hasn't trained on.

Marko Grujic - 2 goals, including the last in a 4-0 win against Barcelona.
43 minutes from 5 appearances and a combined 4 points.
    Who?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Scissor kick on his debut and a late winner in the Community Shield.
17 goals for a total 163 points before his untimely injury in GW33.
The undoubted star of this list.

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 2 goals pre-season.
Didn't play 90 mins until GW14, finished with 2 goals, 7 assists, 83 points, and a possible new role as a defender.
Same comments as every year, has everything, maybe next year.

    Andre Gray - 9 (N-I-N-E) goals in 6 pre-season games.
Started the first 5 games before a suspension then struggled to get his place back. Finished with 108 points and 9 goals, including a hat-trick against Sunderland.
Careful what you write on Social Media.

Jordon Ibe - Signed for £15m from Liverpool, he scored the winner against Cardiff and another in a 3-3 draw with Portsmouth.
    0 goals, 0 assists, 36 points from 25 appearances.
    £15 million???

Abel Hernandez - Four pre-season goals including a brace against Caykur Rizespor (oh yes).
Started with an assist in GW1 and a goal in GW2, then didn't trouble the scorers until his two goals against Bournemouth in GW21. Finished with 4 goals and 72 points.
Can we play Caykur Rizespor every week?

Nathan Redmond - Signed for £11m from Norwich, he scored two goals in pre-season as the Saints went unbeaten.
Made 37 appearances for 7 goals and 126 points.
We'll always have those 10 points in GW1.

Young English players with 'talent' so rarely make a dent goal and assist wise (or FPL wise if you like).

Is Dele Alli the exception that proves the rule? Or is he now not going to score or assist for the rest of his career to reset the average lol

JK - find him on Twitter and WhatsApp, he misses goals while at Old Trafford because he's busy on social media, then laughs about it on social media; had a great FPL season last year

Innsie - busy with life, blogs infrequently, he was in the Knocks&Niggles league 2 WhatsApp chat with you this past season

Aaron Ramessi - got very busy with life, just resigned from Knocks&Niggles due to being occupied with regular life

Blue Lion - relocated to the UAE and got very busy settling in

Zep - more active in WhatsApp groups, expecting first child soon, busy building up his real estate career

Berbilly Gilmore - busy with life, he was in the Knocks&Niggles league 2 WhatsApp chat with you this past season and quite active there

TW - busy with school, I think... haven't seen him in over a year when he was too busy with school and quit Knocks & Niggles

      Canadian Football - no idea

Champ - active on WhatsApp and some FFS offshoot social groups

ENR - in an MBA program in Paris with competition around the world this past season

EVS - he's here, seen him

      Thomas - no idea

Triggerlips - busy with his own blog and website: transferhub

Kolarov and Aderabiyo to cover as CBs and Kolarov to cover as a LB as well.

    Fabinho
    Mendy
    Walker
    Ederson

to come in. Iheanacho to leave.
