Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

A single match remains in Gameweek 2, but we’re already looking forward to the weekend as we browse the key players likely to make an impact in our latest Captain Poll, which is now open.

A tussle between two heavyweight strikers, one with exceptional form and another who has struggled to find the net, is set to be the main battle among our armband options.

With a third goal in two appearances, as Manchester United registered a second successive 4-0 victory last weekend, Romelu Lukaku (11.6) looks on course to once again dominate proceedings.

The runaway leader of our last two polls is owned by 55.3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and has another favourable encounter when Leicester City drop by Old Trafford on Saturday. While the Foxes kept a clean sheet against newly promoted Brighton at the weekend, their 4-3 away loss in Gameweek 1 to Arsenal may give a better indication of how their defence will fare.

Indeed, they have now conceded at least two goals in five of their seven away matches with Craig Shakespeare in charge.

Unlike Lukaku, Harry Kane (12.5) has severely tested his 30.8% ownership after two blanks in a row.

But will his impressive underlying statistics and a home tie against Burnley punish the 200,000 FPL managers who have jettisoned the Spurs talisman since the start of the season?

This may well be the case. Burnley kept just two clean sheets on the road in 2016/17 and Kane has had more shots than any other Premier League player so far. It would be no surprise to see the England striker break his August goal drought against the Clarets.

There’s also an impressive cast list of co-stars to garner interest.

Paul Pogba (8.1) – now FPL’s joint-highest points scorer with two goals and as many assists – is another strong Manchester United option, as is Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.1), who is just two points behind his French colleague’s 23-point tally, courtesy of four assists.

More than 161,000 FPL managers have brought in Pogba since Saturday, while 76,000+ have recruited the Armenian.

Christian Eriksen (9.5) and Dele Alli (9.5) present highly credible Spurs alternatives to Kane, particularly the 18.8%-owned Danish playmaker, who has assisted all three of Spurs goals this season.

Alli boasts strong form in front of his own fans if Spurs can shrug off their Wembley woes, though – he bettered Eriksen by nine goals to five at home in 2016/17.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (11.5), Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0) could lead the chasing pack as they travel to a Bournemouth side that has conceded the second highest amount of close range efforts so far.

Their backers will perhaps be holding off casting their vote until after tonight’s encounter with Everton at the Etihad.

Of the trio, De Bruyne may be the player most keenly watched for a sign he can justify his 10.0 price tag amongst increasing competition for midfield places – most notably from the red half of Manchester. More than 126,000 of his owners have already seen enough and parted company with the Belgian, who failed to find the net against Brighton in Gameweek 1 despite his four goal attempts.

Liverpool trio Roberto Firmino (8.5), Sadio Mane (9.5) and Mo Salah (9.1) will also look to profit against Arsenal’s defence at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds scored seven times in their two league matches against the Gunners last term, with Mane the only player to net on both occasions.

Having notched in Gameweek 1 and 2, the Senegal international approaches this one in fine form, while we expect Jurgen Klopp to roll out a full-strength XI for the weekend and return Salah to his front three, after he was utilised as a sub against Palace.

The only side with a worse record than Bournemouth for conceding shots in the box is Swansea City, who travel to Selhurst Park and hand Eagles striker Christian Benteke (7.9) a chance to get among the goals. But he will have to improve on his meagre tally of just four shots in two matches if he is to gather interest.

West Ham could provide two intriguing differential captaincy candidates for Gameweek 3 – midfielder Michail Antonio (7.5) and striker Javier Hernandez (7.0) – when they travel to a Newcastle United side that has shipped three without reply this season.

While the 22.2%-owned Mexican grabbed the Gameweek 2 headlines with a brace against Southampton, Antonio also impressed in his first competitive match following a lengthy injury lay-off, firing four shots, three of which were close range and on target. With a 0.2% ownership, he is among the lowest-owned players in our poll list.

The stock of Chelsea’s stars as poll contenders took a severe knock after defeat at home to Burnley in Gameweek 1, but victory over Spurs yesterday could revive their fortunes, in particular for their rampaging left wing-back Marcos Alonso (7.0). The 12.7%-owned Spaniard’s brace against the Blues’ London rivals offered a powerful reminder of why he is one of the few defenders who can be considered for the captaincy.

Similarly, his compatriot Alvaro Morata (10.0) grabbed a goal and assist on his home debut off the bench in Gameweek 1 and looks set to lead the line at the expense of Michy Batshuayi against the Toffees.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 3 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Are all of the following players nailed for the foreseeable future:

    Trippier
    Davies
    Jones
    Blind
    Mbemba
    David Silva

i'd probably say it's unlikely any of those are

Trippier - Spurs interested in aurier
Davies - Questions over Rose? Potentially back after int break
Jones - Probably most nailed on of all
      Blind - No
Mbemba - Filling in for Injuries
Silva - City have hundreds of options in midfield, Pep already said he is going to rotate

Trippier - he's likely to be our no1 right-back for the next few months, but certainly not nailed. We might use Kyle-Walker Peters, Sissoko as a wing-back or sign another RB.
Davies - yes for foreseeable future. No sign of Rose yet, but we'll know more during international break is my guess.

Not really, although if I had to put my money on someone it would be Davies. He has been excellent in the absence of Rose and its hard to see Poch benching Davies, at least not in the next few games.

Any thoughts here chaps? A measly 37 points this week with KDB to play, following a good 75 in GW1. 1FT, 0.0ITB

    DDG
    Bertrand Cedric Daniels
    KDB Willian Ramsey JWP
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    Elliott Hegazi Carroll Long

    Depending on KDB,

    a) KDB > Eriksen/Pogba
    b) JWP > Mooy
    c) a + Daniels > Trippier for -4

I have almost the same team.

Waiting for tonight's result before I make any decisions on KDB.

I had Erickson in my team for a large part of last year and he always served me well.

My only concern now is getting one of pogba or Miki. Are you not going for one of those? I know you have Lukaku but surely a double up has crossed your mind?

      1. IRBOX ⚽

Absolutely.. it's between Pogba and Eriksen for me. Would be nice to have both and I'm sure I will work them into my team, sooner rather than later with wildcard. I also had Eriksen all of last season and it was an amicable relationship

          I think that's it really.

Will Spurs or Man U score more.

I just can't bring myself to trust Man U in attack to double up on them.

An even bigger headache is what happens if KDB gets an assist or two later...

          My 2 moves are either:

          KDB --> pogba / miki

Or KDB + Stephens to --> alonso + pogba / miki

Schindler is as good a pick as any from Hud defenders. At 4.5 you're going get what you pay for. Two clean sheets thus far but fixtures stiffen from GW6. Not much better in that price bracket atm. Doesn't rotate well with Mee.

Team is too unbalanced for easy surgery in future. Too much spent in midfield, leaves it difficult to move resources around in other parts of the team. The two 4.0 defenders will rarely play, and Hegazi, Stephens, Okazaki may be vulnerable a few weeks down the line (plus Salah is already proving a rotation risk). Going without Lukaku or Kane could seriously damage you in the short-term.

I'm hearing this term getting thrown around a fair bit:

If you don't captain Kane at home against Burnley then what's the point of having the 12.5mil striker?

Those that are saying that do realize the same can be said for Lukaku at home to LEI right?

So if you have both there's no right or wrong captain option for this gw, and the decision definitely shouldn't rest on which player costs more.

Those that have both originally acquired both for more than just this gw, so captain whichever player you think scores the MOST points according to the fixtures.

Price shouldn't play a role at all when both have yummy home ties.

Not so sure, I think both have their positives and negatives defensively.

Burnley did well v chelsea and can shut a game down and could they be better away than at home this season (a reverse of last season). Leicester were awful defensively v Arsenal, a little better v Brighton but then again Brighton struggle to score.

I have both and currently thinking of opting for Lukaku. He has the form and the higher ownership-- Kane is the riskier punt as he is less popular and wont be transferred in much this GW unless via wildcard due to price and better form of eriksen

    5. IRBOX ⚽

I think price does play a role. If you own Kane and don't captain him, you may as well cover him with Eriksen/Alli and use the funds elsewhere. If Lukaku proves he can be a viable captain option every week I think this has merit to it

      1. FlockofSeagulls
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

I think you may have missed my point.

There will be plenty of other gws where Kane has a plumb home game against weaker opposition and Lukaku doesn't, hence there will be other times when you can captain Kane over Lukaku.

On this occasion both have plumb home games so the players price shouldn't be a factor if you have both. Nor does it mean you shouldn't have Kane just because you think he's not the best captain candidate this gw.

I agree completely with everything you're saying but is he really worth 12.5 if you aren't confident in throwing him the armband each and every week?

Sorry but I don't understand that way of thinking whereby you have to captain a player every week based on price.

In my opinion I have two of the strongest possible captain contenders in my team each week, therefore I'm at an advantage of being able to pick between the two week in week out according to fixtures.

I could go into more detailed analysis by going through the fixtures but I really couldn't be bothered sorry. 🙂

I think I've made my point quite clear and granted my strategy may not be for everyone.

I think the argument is: people had Kane from the start because they planned to captain him in GW3. So unless his underlying stats is poor (which it isn't), they should stick to their original decision.

      1. FlockofSeagulls
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

That's fair enough, but that doesn't speak for everyone.

If I have Kane and Lukaku and both score big in a gw I still get the others points.

Even if I get the captain call wrong one gw I still get the others points.

I'm in a position that my team is set in a way that right at this moment the added money I've spent on Kane wouldn't improve my team in any meaningful way had I not had him and the captain option he gives me.

It's all a matter of personal preference I guess, but my original comments were in regards to some people's comments almost demanding you must captain Kane or otherwise sell and I don't believe that to be true.

The way I would approach it is: look at the next 5-6 matches. With all the information you have now, if you don't think you're going to captain Kane in at least 2-3 matches, Eriksen + 3m invested elsewhere will probably be a better use of your funds.

But I will captain Kane. I never said I wouldn't. He'll always be a candidate.

My point is, if I think there's a better candidate in any given gw I don't think I HAVE to captain Kane just because he costs more. Nor do I think I need to sell him as a result.

Fair enough for this week. However, if he still doesn't gets the armband in GW5 he's gotta go tbh.

Agree. They have nice fixtures upcoming and I think they'll be ok with players coming back from inj. Actually think Zab is their biggest weakness atm.

Few teams into the EFL Cup this week i see, incl West Ham on Weds...

    Struggling with the below still:

    a) Gabbi -> Chicarito

    b) Fraser -> Mooy

Gabbi's fixtures still good...and an improved 80mins on the weekend...West Ham meanwhile are bottom of the table!

    WHAT TO DO

    Forster/Elliot
    Bailly-Valencia-Betrand-Mee-Rangel
    KDB-Zaha-Alli-Willian-Carrol
    Lukaku-Mounie-Firmino

Need to get Zaha out, for Pogba and downgrade Valencia is what im thinking but Man Utd defence looks solid.

    Any ideas?

    Foster
    Bailly Stones Bertrand Monreal
    Mane Alli Willian Atsu
    Lukaku Aguero

    Elliot T.Carroll Quaner Mariappa

But if he's not playing alone up top his points dwindle, happened last season when Sturridge or Origi played along with him iirc.

Liverpool are fixture proof, nearly,do better against big teams. Firmino won't be rotated because he is subbed at 70-75min.

He could be a great option. 8.0m along with a Liverpool mid and a United 8.0m mid is the way to go I think.

Having seen a lot of teams with cheap fourth mids such as Atsu/RLC/ Anyone in that bracket and a premium striker, I being relatively new to the game than most here was thinking that probably having 2 miss in the range of 8/9 are probably better in a 3-5-2 rather than playing a Lukaku / Kane + cheap 4th mids?

    Who'd give you more points?
Lukaku + Atsu OR Pogba + Mkhi?
Kane + RLC OR Alli + Eriksen?

I see captaincy is a huge factor here as most would say that you could captain Lukaku/Kane but not the likes of Mkhi/Alli/Eriksen but what I think is Alli(C) + Eriksen will outscore Kane(C) + RLC most weeks.. and same with Pogba(C) + Mkhi outscoring Lukaku(C) + Atsu.

someone experienced who could rip this logic apart?
