International Scout Notes – Tuesday

A health scare overshadows Sergio Aguero’s record-breaking turn for Argentina, but there’s better news for two other big-ticket strikers, Romelu Lukaku and Alexandre Lacazette.

Fellow forward Alvaro Morata gets the night off for Spain and Eden Hazard is also rested for Belgium, while an injury to Ruben Loftus-Cheek spoils his otherwise excellent international break with England.

Here are the notes from a busy night of action packed with incident and talking points.

Aguero scores and scares

Sergio Aguero’s second goal of the international break took him to third on Argentina’s all-time scoring list, only for a half-time health scare to overshadow the milestone.

The striker ended up in hospital after feeling dizzy during the break of his side’s 4-2 loss to Nigeria in Russia.

Initial reports suggesting that he had blacked out seemed over-dramatic, with the Argentine Football Association declaring on Twitter that Aguero:

“…presented symptoms of fainting and for that reason he was taken to have routine studies done as a precautionary measure.”

Man City then issued a statement downplaying the incident further.

“Sergio never lost consciousness and was taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks. He will be assessed by the club’s medical team ahead of this weekend’s Premier League trip to Leicester City.”

The forward was discharged, returned to the team hotel and was fit enough to fly back from Russia, but his potential involvement in Saturday’s match is anyone’s guess for now.

More than 76,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have bought him ahead of Gameweek 12, putting him in the top ten for transfers-in.

But over the last 24 hours, he is second only to suspended team-mate Nicolas Otamendi for sales.

Owned by 23%, Aguero has the form – four goals in his last four matches for club and country, and six from his last four league starts – and he has the fixtures (lei hud SOT WHU), leaving only his fitness in question.

City coach Pep Guardiola will presumably answer that ahead of the Leicester match, with rotation issues surrounding next Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with Feyenoord another factor to be considered.

It’s also worth noting that Aguero has started just one of his side’s last four away matches in the league, whereas fellow forward Gabriel Jesus has started all five of their road trips.

The aforementioned Nicolas Otamendi, played the full 90 minutes against Nigeria, but is suspended for Saturday anyway, while Man United reserve keeper Sergio Romero was an unused sub.

Nigeria came from two goals down to win the friendly, with a brace from Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and a goal and two assists for Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho.

The latter’s Foxes team-mate Ahmed Musa replaced him on 70 minutes and set up Iwobi’s second goal, while the Leicester duo’s club-mate Wilfred Ndidi played the full match.

Premium strikers finding form

Aguero wasn’t the only big-ticket forward making history on a busy international night.

Man United’s Romelu Lukaku became Belgium’s record goalscorer with the winner in a 1-0 friendly victory over Japan.

The striker headed home a cross from West Brom midfielder Nacer Chadli for his 31st international goal.

Lukaku had gone scoreless for seven matches in all competitions for his club, prompting close to 81,000 managers to show him the door this week, before a brace in last Friday’s 3-3 draw with Mexico stopped the rot.

His continued return to form is timely for a 47.5% ownership ahead of home matches with Newcastle and Brighton over the next two Gameweeks.

Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette also had a good night, scoring both of France’s goals in a 2-2 draw in Germany, with an assist for the first coming from United’s Anthony Martial.

Having failed to find the net in his first four away league matches for the Gunners, Lacazette has now scored in three consecutive road trips for club and country, although Arsenal’s immediate schedule (TOT bur HUD MUN) doesn’t exactly demand investment in the Frenchman.

A third big-name Premier League striker, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, had an almost perfect international break – as far as his 19.9% FPL ownership base was concerned, that is.

The Spaniard scored but played just 45 minutes in Saturday’s friendly win over Costa Rica and was an unused sub last night in a 3-3 draw with Russia.

More than 100,000 managers have bought Morata ahead of the Blues’ trip to West Brom this weekend – more than any other forward – and their new purchase looks to be both in form and well rested. He’s emerged as the go-to man for those Aguero owners over the past 24 hours, earning more transfers-in than any other player.

Another key Chelsea target, Eden Hazard, played no part in last night’s Belgium match after picking up a knock against Mexico earlier in the break.

Lukaku and Chadli were among a typically strong Premier League contingent in action for the Belgians. They were joined as starters by Jan Vertonghen – the Spurs centre-half returning after an ankle injury kept him out of the weekend match – Simon Mignolet, Kevin De Bruyne and the fit-again Watford defender Christian Kabasele.

De Bruyne played 62 minutes and Lukaku 74, while Everton winger Kevin Mirallas was introduced with half an hour to go.

Mousa Dembele, Thibaut Courtois, Steven Defour and Laurent Depoitre were unused subs for Belgium, while Southampton defender Maya Yoshida played the full match for Japan.

As for the French, Lacazette was withdrawn after 76 minutes, Martial did the full 90 and Laurent Koscielny and Moussa Sissoko remained on the bench.

Midfielders front and centre

Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen returned to goal scoring form with a bang as his hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland secured Denmark’s place in next year’s World Cup finals.

The midfielder hasn’t scored in his last three domestic outings and that mini-drought had been extended to the international stage when he blanked for the first time in seven Denmark matches during Saturday’s first leg of the World Cup qualifying play-off.

But he was devastating in the second leg as the Danes won 5-1 and the 69,000+ managers who have sold him on this Gameweek might be regretting their decision, particularly as Spurs’ schedule picks up markedly (WBA lei wat STK BHA) following this weekend’s trip to Arsenal.

Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel and Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen played the full 90 minutes alongside Eriksen, with Christensen providing an assist. Huddersfield stopper Jonas Lossl was on the bench.

Brighton defender Shane Duffy opened the scoring for the Irish and played the full match, as did Stephen Ward, James McClean, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady.

Harry Arter started but was subbed at half-time, with Shane Long replacing him.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil started and finished Germany’s draw with France and produced an assist for good measure.

He was joined in the German midfield by Emre Can, who played 83 minutes, and Ilkay Gundogan, who was replaced after 65.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger came on at half-time, while Leroy Sane’s 25% ownership will be delighted by his bench-warming duties.

Sane, the top-scoring player in FPL, played 87 minutes against England earlier in the break but did not feature at all last night. He’s the third most purchased player heading into Gameweek 12, with over 113,000 new owners.

Sorry end for Loftus-Cheek

Crystal Palace’s midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek had been one of the few positives to emerge from England’s injury-strewn international break.

The Chelsea loanee impressed on his debut against Germany on Friday and started last night’s 0-0 draw with Brazil as well.

But he lasted just 34 minutes of the encounter before a back injury forced him off, with Man United’s Jesse Lingard taking his place. Post-match, Loftus-Cheek conceded he was unsure whether he’ll be fit in time to face the Toffees.

England coach Gareth Southgate opted for a two-man attack of Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy, but neither unduly threatened the Brazilian defence and the Leicester striker has now scored just once in seven matches for club and country.

The visitors handed Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho his first start since Gameweek 9 as he confirmed his full recovery from a groin injury, playing 68 minutes before being replaced by Chelsea’s Willian.

Man City striker Gabriel Jesus started and played 76 minutes, with Roberto Firmino coming on in his place. Fernandinho was introduced at the same time and almost won the match when his shot hit the outside of the post, while his club-mate Danilo was an unused sub.

Elsewhere…

Burnley striker Sam Vokes missed a penalty as Wales were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama.

Vokes played the first half of the friendly, as did Spurs defender Ben Davies, while Liverpool midfielder Ben Woodburn was given a 71-minute run-out.

Wayne Hennessey, Joe Allen, Andy King and Ashley Williams were all unused subs for the Welsh.

Nathan Ake, Virgil van Dijk, Daley Blind and Davy Propper started as the Netherlands won 3-0 in Romania.

Blind was replaced after 87 minutes and Propper on 62, while Georginio Wijnaldum and Timothy Fosu-Mensah stayed on the bench.

Spurs midfielder Son Heung-min and Swansea City’s Ki Sung-yeung played the full 90 minutes for South Korea in a 1-1 home draw with Serbia.

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic started and finished for the visitors, while Dusan Tadic and Aleksandar Mitrovic were unused subs.

Son’s team-mate Davinson Sanchez played 72 minutes as Colombia won 4-0 in China, while Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gueye put in a full shift for Senegal in their 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over South Africa. West Ham striker Diafra Sakho stayed on the bench.

Iceland drew 1-1 in Qatar, with Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson playing the full 90 and Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson watching from the dug-out, while Man United keeper David de Gea was kept busy for Spain in the 3-3 draw against Russia in which Alberto Moreno came on at half-time and David Silva after 58 minutes.

Marko Arnautovic played 86 minutes and Kevin Wimmer was an unused sub as Austria beat Uruguay 2-1, while Bernardo Silva came on after 62 minutes for Portugal in their 1-1 draw with the USA, Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin playing the full match for the Americans.

And in Monday night’s tense 0-0 draw between Italy and Sweden – a match that saw the Italians fail to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 – United centre-half Victor Lindelof played the full 90 minutes for the impenetrable Swedes.

His club-mate Matteo Darmian was given 63 minutes for the Azzurri, as was Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

Finally, reports suggest that Winston Reid could miss David Moyes’ first match in charge of West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

The centre-back isn’t due to return to the UK until Saturday morning as New Zealand’s vital World Cup clash with Peru doesn’t take place until 2.05am GMT tomorrow.

Not only would this affect the Hammers, it would also place bigger question marks over Kiwi striker Chris Wood’s availability for Burnley’s clash with Swansea City, which kicks off at 3pm on Saturday. Reid, at least, has until 4pm the following day before the Vicarage Road encounter gets underway.

If Alderweireld doesn't drop to 5.9, is Vertonghen the better pick?

The former has always been more popular and previously a great aerial threat.

I had Vertonghen last season as he was 0.5 cheaper and actually proved the better pick for his baps.

Vertonghen hasn't scored for Spurs since January 2015. Based on the previous couple of seasons, I'd prefer Alderweireld for goal threat, but there's not been much in it between them so far this time out.

However, when Spurs have played with a back three (which looks the first choice shape now Sanchez has joined), Vertonghen has averaged a baseline BPS of 16.9 per game, compared to Alderweireld on 12.2 per game. In the back four, they've both averaged exactly 15 per game.

It comes down to attacking returns vs bonus and I'm starting to wonder if 15/16 was a one off for Alderweireld.

I've noticed Vertonghen is actually going up for corners again this year while last year he was staying back.

After watching Spurs a few times this season Vertonghen has come very close to scoring on a few occasions and often seems to make runs into the box during open play. Especially against the weaker teams.

I’m not sure it stats/heat maps back this up but from the eye test I’d be going to Jan for sure.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Best way of dealing with Man City

Fixtures still look strong for City and their form is excellent.

But rotation is still a factor and now Aguero and Jesus in particular have serious competition from the likes of Lukaku, Kane and Morata.

As was discussed on the Scoutcast last night there are widely differing views, while Mark is keen on Sterling and Sane, I like the security of starts of Silva as well as Sterling's ability to do well off the bench. Meanwhile, Andy is looking at going into the next few games with just Sterling.

How many city assets do you currently have? Which if any are you looking to ditch and why?

What is the optimum way to tap into their assets?

Currently I have two city players. Sterling and stones. Pretty happy with those two. Sterling can do the business even in last 10-15 mins .

I have Silva and Jesus but currently very unhappy with them. Silva is alright due to his nailedness and involvement but Jesus is just a waste of space.

Sane is a must have IMO. Incredibly nailed and explosive.

Next week I'm looking at Jesus + Tarroll to Sane and a cheap forward.

Worried about Aguero now he seems to suddenly be made of balsa wood.

Looking at Aguero to Morata and upgrading Tom Carroll to Sane to have Silva/Sterling/Sane for a short period. Eventually one of them will then be upgraded to Hazard from GW14 provides Chelsea look stable with Conti and general unrest.

I’m another one on the Sterling & Sané double.

Value, lack of competition at their price points (assuming you can also get a Liverpool mid alongside them), feees up striker spots for players you really want, and can both be devestatingly effective super-subs.

Silva ans Sane for me. Need to improve my strikeforce so will probably ditch DSilva for a cheaper option to fund Morata with 1 of my 2FT's next week.

      Currently on Sterling and Jesus.

Jesus is getting sold so I can double up in the midfield. I want Sane but I might play it safe with David Silva as I don't have any steady eddies in my midfield and he seems undroppable.

Aguero/Jesus rotation is not worth the ball ache and I'm not touching that defence, no matter how well they've started.

Currently have Stones, Sterling and Aguero. On WC though, and likely to go with Sane and Sterling.

Had Stones since GW1, hoping for cleansheets and a few attacking spoils. He seems to score outside of the league, but for now he's quite expesnive. For as long as City are only an Otamendi mistake away from conceding, I'm likely to look at cheaper alternatives.

Looking to bring in Sane in place of Aguero as equally explosive (well, not 5 goals explosive) and enables me to have a solid 4 man midfield. I also think it's unlikely that I would captain Aguero and so will likely have Morata instead as a cheaper alternative.

Have Silva and Sterling. Sold Augero last week for Morata.

I want the certainty in the starting, can't have Kun and Jesus keeping him frustrated. Silva was close to scoring in last two three games and was unlucky not to, Sterling's overall game is better than Sane. I think Pep will value it more as the season progress, City won't be bullying every team, and even if Sterling doesn't start, I am happy with his sub appearances too in any case. Delivers the points.

Whatever one does, as far as City is concerned, you can never have a guarantee of coverage. So the way I prefer it is a defender (least rotation likely and most nailed - mine is Stones), a midfielder (of one's personal choice - mine is Sterling, even if there is a rotation risk) and Agüero. In the long run, Agüero will not score less than Lukaku or Morata. No way. Even if rested. That's what I believe in.

      on Stones, Sterling & Jesus

Jesus is the problem, Goals per minutes is superb but just don't feel i can have a 10.5m striker who's not a guaranteed a minimum 60/70 minutes per game.

If Kun is out he stays but otherwise it's a choice between Alli/Sane & Abraham or Choupo & Morata.

Whilst Man City's PL fixtures look ok, their schedule is horrible with either a PL or Champions League or League Cup game every single midweek all the way into the start of January.

I have had both Sane and Sterling since GW8 and am not changing that now, they are still good value for money.

However the key here is that there will be games that they miss due to the afformetioned horrible schedule and as such if you go down this route then you need a very decent bench just in case.

a question thats been on my mind is, during the scoutcast, andy, az and mark seemed to agree that sane was the best midfield option among the 3, yet the watchlist and RMT has sterling above sane. why is that?

            Here's what Mark says

"look at points per match - 6.9 Sterling, 6.6 Sane.

If they both start, which I think they do as does RMT, then Sterling does have the edge."

Sterling has 2 double digit hauls, Sane has 5... Granted, they're rather even, but Sane is the better player of the two, hence he has the ability to outscore Sterling imo!

Yeah, well RMT definitely does that, though it's very close for both short and long-term for them both.

As for the Watchlist, I imagine one more big return for Sane and we will flip them but, as I've said before, I just think Sterling is playing more centrally and is more likely to get scrappy tap ins. I think his goals are more sustainable in other words.

In the last 6 matches that they've played (in Sterling's case over 7 gw), sterling is better for xGI, mins per xGI, mins per goal, attempt and chance created. So why are we all, myself included still chasing the 0.6 more expensive sane?

The current odds (on Betfair) for a player to score two goals or more this weekend:

      Aguero 7/2
      Jesus 7/2
      Kane 4/1
      Lukaku 4/1
      Morata 11/2

So it looks like doubling up on Aguero & Jesus is the way to go.

You get your money back from the bookies though if you pick Aguero and/or Jesus and they don't start, which is not the case in FPL.

Sterling and Sane without doubt. Great value and both explosive. Doesn't really matter if they are rotated a little (just means I'm not very confident captaining them).

Short answer is that one City attacking player is not enough. They score 3 on average and in easy matches especially at home they can easily score 4 or more. All combinations of 2 attacking players are valid imo and will deliver handsomely with patience. I think people are overthinking rotation. The festive period is still far away. It is not like it is after 2 or 3 GWs. Also their place as top of the CL group is almost guaranteed. They can afford not to play their best team in CL. Pep will focus more on the league now.

I currently have Sterling, Agüero and Jesus, with two free transfers. Considering the following options.

      A. Jesus to Morata,
      B. Agüero to Morata (if Agüero’s confirmed out),
      C. Jesus and Agüero to Morata and Lukaku.

If I decide to do A or B, I will likely drop the other plus Tarroll to Abraham and Sané thereafter.

I currently have Walker-Silva-Aguero but i'm probably going to do Walker -> Alonso/Azpi and Aguero -> Morata.

Walker doesn't justify the price tag for me and I can't deal with the Aguero roulette all season long (Agueroulette? No? Maybe I need more coffee!).

I'll keep Silva though because he's a nice, consistent option for when the fixtures start piling up.

Currently own Silva, Sterling and Aguero but selling Aguero this week for Lukaku and then Sane next week for Silva.

Will add a defender to Sane and Sterling, the strikers have been nothing but trouble and can't wait to get off, there are other strikers who can do well and won't make you worry every week about them being benched.

A City striker was there to fill the gap when Lukaku had tricky fixtures, that period has ended now so will move on from the worry.

      I've got 3 - Otamendi, Sterling, Aguero.

Just going to stick by them. Even if the latter two come off the bench they get more points than players in similar price ranges who play 90 mins. Just makes captaining Aguero a bit more tough but it's not like we are comfortable Kane who is even more expensive and is nailed.

Jonty, good question. I’m going with both Aguero and Jesus upfront, have since the start. I’m currently 78k. The only reason I’m not lower is because of my Captain choices. Kane is my 3rd striker.

I look at replacing either because of rotation every week but I can’t do it, Lukaku hasn’t impressed me at all this season despite his ‘nailed’ on status. The rewards for a Jesus/Aguero haul are too enticing. I feel that knowing I have at least one is going to reap rewards. I never usually go with non nailed on players but this season feels a little unique. The only issue with having them both is captaincy, if only I could rely on Kane more!

Have had Sane, Silva and Sterling for a few weeks.
City are by some distance the attacking form team in the league and so it makes sense to max out on their better value attacking assets and ignore their defenders.
At least two of these will play every week and will stand a very good chance of getting points.
I avoid the Aguero/Jesus headache and look forward to seeing the City team sheet every week.
Of course having subs that play is an absolute necessity though.
The only downside is, that as I want to spread the money around the team and have two big hitting forwards and Azpilicueta, Bellerin and De Gea in defence, it means that I can't afford Salah. I reckon I've missed the boat with him anyway.
      It's pain-free City though.

I'm a couple of weeks I'll be going with just Otamendi. I'm hoping Pep's rotation and the points being shared in the attack will mean it won't hurt me much. I'd rather have 4 premium nailed on attackers, good budget mids and a strong defence.

I would say generally not, but there will be odd weeks where he outperforms him. Last season, I brought in Eriksen around Christmas as I couldn't afford Kane and he popped up with four goals and a few assists in three games while Harry Kane only got a couple of goals. But then Harry scored 12 in the followin 11 games (I brought him in on early Jan WC)
