Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Sunday

Richarlison ends his Vicarage Road goal drought as Will Hughes catches the eye against West Ham. Elsewhere, the heroics of Heurelho Gomes helps the Hornets to a rare clean sheet as David Moyes’ tenure at West Ham begins with defeat.

Richarlison ends home drought

Such a reliable source of goals and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points on his travels, Richarlison finally found the net at home after failing to produce a single effort on target in his previous five at Vicarage Road.

Owned by 18%, the young Brazilian’s home output was of particular concern bearing in mind that his next two visitors are Manchester United and Spurs in Gameweek 14-15.

Yet Sunday’s strike maintained a remarkable run of consistency – he’s now delivered attacking points in six of the last seven Gameweeks ahead of next weekend’s trip to Newcastle United.

Heightening his appeal for that Magpies clash is that, away from home, Richarlison has averaged 7.2 points per match and is the league’s top player for shots inside the opposition box (20).

On the downside, he also has a testing trip to Burnley directly after those United and Spurs matches. But the case for holding is very convincing, with the fixtures turning in his favour from Gameweek 17 once again.

At a price of 6.5, Richarlison is now the top FPL midfielder for value in terms of points per million and sits fifth in the midfield standings on 66 points.

Despite that, his inability to claim bonus points continues to dent the South American’s captaincy potential. He has scored or assisted in eight of the first 12 Gameweeks but has earned bonus points on just two occasions.

Today’s BPS haul was limited by two shots off target and two fouls conceded, while he was also tackled twice.

Hughes impresses in tactical tweak

Handed a central support role alongside Richarlison as Marco Silva moved to 3-4-2-1 against the Hammers, Will Hughes overshadowed his more popular team-mate thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

But Watford’s form on the road suggests that Silva could revert to his usual 4-2-3-1 at St James’ Park – only Man City (16) and Chelsea (14) have scored more away goals than the Hornets’ 12.

Regardless of formation, Hughes (4.6) now looks likely to be on the teamsheet for the trip to Tyneside after months on the periphery.

Handed just 10 minutes in the opening 10 Gameweeks, Hughes has now started both of Watford’s last two. However, Roberto Pereyra made a return to the bench and replaced the former Derby County man late on; he will doubtless threaten Hughes’ start in weeks to come.

Andre Gray was again a starter up front as Troy Deeney served the second match in a three-match suspension. Gray’s scuffed assist for Hughes’ opener was his second in as many matches.

Gomes keeps it clean

Silva can thank Heurelho Gomes for their first clean sheet in eight attempts after he denied Cheick Kouyate and Marko Arnautovic with superb stops.

Indeed, David Moyes can at least take encouragement from the fact that his side had three big chances today – they had managed just six in their previous six road trips under Slaven Bilic.

For the hosts, the decision to bench Jose Holebas came as a surprise as Marvin Zeegelaar (4.4) earned his first outing of the season at left wing-back. Holebas had played every minute of the previous 10 matches he had been available for, only missing the Gameweek 3 encounter against Brighton due to suspension.

Ranked top for crosses (82) and successful crosses (17) among defenders, Holebas is second only to Ben Davies for key passes (15 to 22) at the back.

Watford’s primary corner taker over the first 11 (he had taken 33 of their first 50), Holebas’ absence saw Hughes also claim dead-ball duties, taking all three of Watford’s corners.

Zeegelaar impressed on his first start, picking up two bonus points on his debut having won three tackles. Kiko Femenía – our preferred option among Silva’s defence – picked up a single bonus point but hobbled off late on with a knock.

Elsewhere, Adrian Mariappa – a 4.0 option in FPL – also earned a notable recall in Silva’s three-man defence having been dropped for the previous two outings.

However, like Hughes, Mariappa will surely have strong competition for his starting role with Sebastian Prödl returning from injury to figure on the bench on Sunday. Younes Kaboul is also on the road to recovery, with Silva likely to go into the busy Christmas period with the option to rotate his centre-backs.

Hazard seems too expensive still. Salah, Sane, Pogba, Sterling, Silva, Richarlison offering so much value.

Mane and Cout probably better value too.

I have considered it. I already own Azpi and Hazard but think I’m going to go for a cheap striker and get in Alonso instead.

    Pep is very frustrating.

If Sane/Sterling start the CL, then I don't know whether that means they're primed for a rest against Huds, or they're now first choices who are nailed.

Given he says he will need to rotate even more and that he plans to overhaul the side for CL I think we can safely say anyone who plays midweek and played against Lei will not play next weekend.

Exactly. There are few things we can be certain about with City - but if Pep has said he is rotating because of a schedule that means there is a very strong chance that they will not play this weekend if they played Lei and play CL this week.

Pep has given us a free hint here - I think we should take it.

    Early thoughts on captain?

If I owned Lukaku I would captain him seeing as he's got his goal. Kane..I just can't trust him for now. Aguero..not guaranteed to get any mins. Salah..may just have to be.

Salah plays Chelsea, tough one there I feel, they look better organised now.
I am going Kane, but then again I wont recommend. My reasoning is that he is too good a player for this slump to continue (or I am just being stubborn).....

I'm struggling with it this week. I think I'm going to go Kane purely for the reason that WBA are in a crisis

Mentioned that we should really be considering Salah (c) every week for the consistent returns.

Not sure Chelsea is the game to start though....I'll be going Lukaku.

Salah is scoring so well yet you barely hear his name mentioned for captaincy (from myself included!)

        This.
Salah is a fantastic player and not just fantasy wise. Anything he finds against Chelse should be considered bonus by owners. beyond that though, great C option

I know that you are saying about Kane, but West Brom look awful so that’s the reason I’m considering him. My only issue is, is Kane actually fit? I’ve heard he looked jaded against Arsenal.

Don't know about that, that seems like an excuse. He had his leg strapped up but his shooting was poor, as it has been most of the season.

Lukaku for me - he's my dream pick - consistent and predictable against easier opposition at home.

I can't be done with Kane (c) anymore. If I hadn't got Lukaku in this weekend I definitely would have captained the Spurs man.

Kane needs to earn trust for the armband, which means he has to score against bad sides at home...minimum.

Agreed. I'm in a right pickle now. Own Aguero and Kane, can't trust either! Scared to sell them, too. Sold Kane for his 16 pointer against Liverpool and wildcarded just to get him back. He's blanked twice as a captain since. He's lost my trust.

If I had Aguero I'd ditch if he starts midweek.

Kane I'm keeping - its like stages with him. I've overcome the need t captain him. Now I need to overcome the fear of ditching him. That may be a few gwks off.

I think there's a lot of stats as to why he hasn't, mainly to do with how many goals Morata gets from crosses in from the right as opposed to Costa last year who preferred the left (and how hard it is for defenders to defend crosses from deeper positions rather than the touchline)

Do Pep's new comments about rotation really change a thing? This is what he's said:

"“Against Feyenoord I will change the team completely. What happened with John Stones shows the calendar is so demanding and we have to rotate the team this month and we will do that game by game.”"

There's no way, even with midweek games that he consistently changes the full XI of his team game to game. Sure there will be rotation as there has been, but I don't see it being drastically different.

The Man City squad is good but it's not change the XI each game good (although not far off!).

I feel this is being used as an excuse to offload on Man City players (and I'm not saying there's not better options) but I don't think these comments change anything from last week really.

With Pep I think it's important to spot any emerging patterns as opposed to what he says.

      For example (iirc):

      - Aguero has started every home game when available
      - Jesus has started every away game when available
      - Sane has started every game since Mendy got injured

youd get more solid information looking at tea leaves. I dont know why people cant get their head around the fact that they will never ever be able to second guess this guy. a certain group of city attackers are going to rotated for the season. it could be any of them for any game. if you own them just accept it and move on.

        Exactly.

There is a clear pattern emerging for those three players in particular

Also given his concerns about fitness and the need for rotation will any players who played v Lei and CL really start this coming weekend?

If Sterling starts midweek then the temptation to make that easy switch to Pogba is very strong indeed.

I'm sure he's a sure starter most games but he's returning after a hamstring injury and therefore Mourinho may limit his minutes either midweek or at the weekend.

Not really. Pogba has zero competition for his place. He will play 90 mins in most league games from now on.

The question is which Mid would you lose for Hazard. Surely not Salah, but you could probably fund Sane-Hazard by downgrading DDG and Alonso if you can live without any City attack. Either way its a nice squad.

A curious scenario for everyone. I got an ML rival who had Aguero who didn't play. His first sub is Solanke who didn't play as well and he has Francis as his second sub who got - 2. Will Francis - 2 come in for Aguero and deduct - 2 from his overall points?

Can't decide if I even want Salah atm.
Got Zaha-Richa-Silva-Hazard-RLC at the mid atm. All bringing in steady points.
Really don't wanna drop any of those players.

I would rather have Salah than Silva but there is a price difference so it would mean you would have to downgrade somewhere.

The reason is that Salah like Silva plays every game but Salah is much more expolisve. He's basically a striker with midfield numers, that is 1 pt. for clean sheet and a extra point for goals scored. I feel Salah is essential for this season.

9 goals in 12 games is exceptional for a winger and I can see him get 20+ if he stays fit.

I know. Salah is one of my favorite players as a Liverpool fan.
But it's hard motivating the transfer when Silva is scoring steadly as well.
Also have Joselu who needs to go before i get Salah. And now with Couth back again, even consider him instead of Salah with the price difference in mind. Got the money to transfer Salah in for Silva tho. But don't think Salah will score well against Chelsea.

I think he'll be fine against Chelsea, if anything he'll probably be more pumped than ever because he'll want his revenge.

Jesus owners what are you going to do?

Do Jesus to Morata or wait one more week?

I kept him for game week 12 and feel it was the right descicion as Jesus got 8 and Morata 9.

Keeping for this weekend if rested in CL.

      I have Morata as well.

      I just ditched Kane.

I may bring in Lukaku for Jesus after this weekend.

Getting rid of Hazard two weeks ago is gonna eat me for a while.

I'd just captained him away at Bournemouth and done well out of that. Then I looked at the next three. Spurs has CPL ars WBA. Chelsea had MUN wba liv, and I reasoned selling Haz for Alli (after a brace at wembley against Madrid) over those three would be wise. Alli then failed to play against CPL (although Haz blanked against United), but then this weekend killed me.

Alli, you have WBA to make it right. Then you're going. For Hazard.

Kompany is a liability. Injury prone and a red card waiting to happen, wreckless and out of position too often, getting past it now unless Pep puts on a leash on him and tells him to calm down
