Does “having nothing to play for” matter at the end of the season?

In Gameweek 34 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), we were treated to two matches that had lots of goals and plenty of fun – apart from if you were a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan.

The nail-biting thriller of Crystal Palace’s 4-3 win over London rivals West Ham United and the 6-0 demolition of Wolves by Brighton & Hove Albion were exciting affairs, and the good news is that data shows a lot more of these types of games are incoming. The fact is, we are now entering a period of high variance.

As the 2022/23 season comes to an end, we will see the return of high-scoring games that buck trends. Shock results will be incoming and it may be partly due to the phenomena of “when teams have nothing to play for”.

This article will explore the data, the potential reasons for this and also how you can use this information to help with your FPL choices.

When Does A Team Have Nothing To Play For?

FPL Gameweek 33 differentials: Olise, Willock + Solanke

Before beginning this article, we must define what is meant by “when teams have nothing to play for”. In my research, I have defined this as a period when mathematically teams cannot change their position in a meaningful manner. So for example, a team may be able to get from 15th to 9th, but there would be no reward for European football. They would be playing for a marginal increase in prize money, which isn’t a huge motivator to players, especially if they have met their goal of Premier League survival. This is in contrast to teams late in the season who still have a tangible aim, whether that is to secure survival, clinch a title or qualify for Europe.

To give insight, five seasons’ worth of data was examined going from 2016/2017 onwards. Unfortunately, there is no expected goals (xG) data in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area for the 2016/17 campaign, so the xG analysis is for four seasons, but this still gives us a good set of numbers to work with.

Adding to this, teams have also been split up into groups as there are some clear differences in performances between certain types of clubs from the top to bottom of the Premier League. These groups are:

  • The Title Hunters: The top two teams
  • The European Teams: Third to seventh
  • Midtable: Teams in eighth to fifteenth
  • Relegation battlers: Sixteenth to twentieth

These groups of teams have different levels of quality, motivations and play styles thus it made sense to put them into different classifications.

What The Data Reveals

Does "having nothing to play for"

Yeah I had him in Draft for much of the season and he was bobbing on and off the FFS Watchlist for a while. Four goals and nine assists is not too shabby for £5.5m, I guess we've just been spoiled in the budget bracket with Almiron, the Brighton lads and Pereira.

I think as long as you have decent money in the bank to upgrade or shift sidewards if things go south you can swap him out. Eze is firmly on my radar as a replacement, especially for those final three games.

Out of curiosity how many hits have people taken this season so far? I'm on 8, with only one in the last 14GWs. By far my lowest of any year

most of my hits have paid off, people have this misconception that it has to pay off in 1 week, but it does get muddled trying to work out over 3-4 weeks if it pays off or not

I use hits where its needed to enable another transfer, or where it helps my long term strategy or where there is a double or blank.

I tend to be hit heavy vs the norm though. but typical finish for me is around the 20-30k range

44 points. But I've always been an aggressive hit happy manager.

I find you take fewer hits in your best seasons, but it's not because you changed your playstyle, it's because you made more 'correct' choices and therefore don't need to fix your team as much.

Third season playing, and each season have taken fewer hits. Just four this season, including two for BGWs, and all have paid off in the week I took them, though haven't checked longer term whether they were worth it. OR currently 74k.

More broadly, I find myself increasingly interested in the (cod)psychology of hit-taking. How we justify them to ourselves, the idea of being conservative or more of a risk-taker, whether thinking about multiple -4s rather than aggregated -8s or -12s is wise or just another way to justify personal preferences and behaviours. Anyway, thanks for asking the question Natedog

8 here as well, the lowest I have taken in quite some time.

I have been snowed under at work the entire season and haven't been as engaged as I would have liked, although I don't blame my pish rank (650k) on that entirely. Not buying Haaland until GW10 probably had much more to do with it :-).

I may renege on watching the Charity Shield this year - looked to me like young Erling would take a good few games to settle. That went well.

14 hits, so -56pts total. Interestingly, I took most hits in the 2nd half of the season and it coincided with a run of 10 green arrows in a row. Although that just probably goes to show how bad my team was after the restart because it needed a lot of fixing!

In general I think hits are very much team and situation dependent. There's no hard and fast rule about whether they are good or not. A lot of the time when you are doing well, it's because you don't need to take hits because you have the form players in your team already and don't need to solve big problems in team structure etc. Other times, hits are badly needed to get back ahead of the curve and to put out fires.

If not De Gea, maybe go for Sam Johnstone? Palace are 2nd for Non Pen xGC per 90 for the last 6 games, fairly cheap keeper and they have a good last 3 games. I think defence this season has been really hard to pick and especially at the end when Newcastle and Arsenal are dropping off, just kinda have to go with your gut.

Chelsea are a mess atm and I've owned Kepa and I can advise people stay away. In their last 11 Prem games, Chelsea have kept 2 clean sheets and I don't think they keep another one the rest of the season.

I'm probably shipping Kepa for DDG this week so I definitely don't think people should get him in.

If there's a City leak to suggest Greal is benched, I'd sell Jota to Cilson or Isak

I'm eyeing up Jota + TAA -> Kane + Schar. If Jota it's hinted Jota will be benched I'll definitely pull the trigger. If it looks like he might start then I might leave it be. Tricky one though.

Are we expecting City team leaks ahead of the Sat deadline or is it a bit far-fetched?

Don't think it's far-fetched with the deadline at 13:30. Mahrez owner here so very much hoping to some early team news.

Likely to get leaked City news, also likely that Fpl servers crash if say Haaland is benched and you want to switch captaincy

Dalot has kept 10 clean sheets this year with United (the team has 15 in total)

In those games, he's gotten max bonus 5 times and 2 bonus in another. His bonus is down when playing LB (3 non bonus cleans) but at RB like last game and earlier in the season, he's an insane bonus magnet.

In fact, there's only one game where United kept a clean sheet and he played RB where he didn't get max bonus.

As a triple Brighton and Dalot owner today should be interesting.

Loved Dalot over Shaw when owned but injuries have kept him out of my team.

It was only 2 weeks ago that he literally scored his first goal for Utd in 100 games playing LB with license to get forward and shoot on stronger foot. Ended up getting 2 bps so no idea what you're on about.

My point was that when playing RB, his baseline bonus is insanely high. He gets max bonus basically every time they keep a clean sheet and he's playing RB (5/6 games).

Playing LB he has 3 non bonus CS and he got 2 bonus in the game when he scored that goal.

No idea where you are pulling this data from.
He has played 21 EPL games at RB this season.
And 2 at LB. One of which was Forest and he got 14 FPL points. The other game was Spurs.

Hmm I thought he was playing LB for longer than he was I guess if he only played 2 games. Thought it was most games post WC. But the point still stands that he's a big bonus magnet.

Anyone with a favourite chip ?

Lots of talk at times regarding chips and which is the best, but I think it just how lucky you are.

On a BB of Allison, Antonio, Estupiñán and Zouma, 31 points with Estupiñán to go. Pretty happy with that.

Never quite understood the 'just use it to get it out of the way' when you can get 8 extra games out of it in a double and remove the 'who to bench' dilemma.

My Haaland Triple Captain gave me 8 points.

Not played my FH yet but the assessment of that is a bit subjective

In terms of power I think it's FH - BB - TC, and wildcards are more powerful than the lot.
I used to be of the mindset that saving BB until later, when squad value is high, was best strategy. Had some great success in the past with that. 28 pts benched this week is my highest in a gw, but next highest was week 1. So there's an argument for both BB strats imo.

      1. Hotdogs for Tea

FH is powerful but with planning for a double game week a non FH team can cover it for about 8 or 9 starters.

A good bench boost with 8 extra players is quite powerful and two or three returns out of the 8 players means a 30 pointer probably ... but you really do need that WC the week before

FH37 for me and it will be interesting which players I get ... most will have 3 Brighton, Utd & City (I have 3 or each already? but will they have the best 3 on the day ?
