This series has generally been engaged in looking for the “next prospect”, the unheralded and the unfashionable. This week, we’re going to go in a slightly different direction and re-examine someone who was first mentioned in these pages back in Gameweek 6, after which he was promptly benched to seemingly slip back into obscurity. As last weekend’s performance at QPR demonstrated, however, the underlying potential of Jason Puncheon was never in doubt: pitch-time looks to be the key factor in his prosperity as a Fantasy asset.
might be worth a punt this week. but i would keep fellaini somehow
Open Controlsdon't really see the point of getting him
sure he represents a coverage of manutd against managerless utd
but his returns have not really been fruitful lately....Open Controlsoops! ignore that one
Open Controls
don't really see the point of getting him
sure he represents a coverage of manutd against managerless qpr
but his returns have not really been fruitful lately....Open ControlsI'm not sold on Valencia's merits this season I'm afraid. The raw goal threat of Fellaini is surely too much to ignore and one of Rooney/RVP is the best route into Utd attack IMO. I think people may regret selling Fellaini as well. If you have a decent bench player, I'd hold tight.
Open ControlsSterling is my bench player.
This weeks mf...
Sterling, bale, Michu, Nolan (Felliani)
WHM have awful run of games ahead... Wish I could do straight Nolan to Valencia upgrade but a little shy on the £s 😥Open ControlsI'd save the transfer myself if there are no other pressing issues. I still think Nolan is an seasoned enough PL player to be able to offer goal threat regardless of the opponent.
If you're still not happy next week maybe downgrade elsewhere and upgrade Nolan.Open Controls
Have to switch to 4 at the back this GW with Fellaini and Guthrie red-flagged.
Gorkks (wig) or Garrido (eve)?Open ControlsThanks boys, that was my initial gut feeling.
Open Controls
West Brom/Southampton rotation is also nice for the same time frame and involves 0 transfers for me 😀
Open ControlsBegovic
Rafael , baines v , huth
Sess , Carzorla , Maloney , Walcott
Ba , RVP c , Tevez
Bench sterling,Clyne,Gunter
Sterling plays for Theo I I guess
Had to take 4 pt hit this week ,but looks ok right ?Open ControlsWill monitor him v newcastle, if he does well might consider bringing him in for maloney
Open Controlsneed more opinions on this:
i'm looking to get in arsenal or city coverage. i'm looking at doing either maloney -> walcott or berba ->aguero. i'm leaning towards the walcott trade since arsenal's fixtures are alot easier, and berba is still good value and in good form. what do you think?Open Controlswalcott is injured
Open Controlsi forgot the mention this transfer is for next week. hopefully we know more about his injury by then. though he's expected to be back for the midweek game in gw 14.
Open Controls
Anyway to get Silva as City coverage?
Open Controlsi could have if i opted for gorkss instead of cuellar. but looking at their fixtures of cuellar, gorkss, silva and walcott, i decided that cuellar and walcott would be the best move. but i just found out i could get aguero if i lost berba, although i'm not too keen on this
Open Controls
Valencia or Bale?
Bale seems sensible option, but can see UTD destroying QPR tomorrow.Open ControlsBale
Open ControlsBale for me. I don't think they're comparable. You could argue that Valencia has the better assist threat but he has nowhere near the same goal threat as Bale.
Open Controls
Chris Glover, you're blog/site is deadly. I really enjoy reading it when the dust settles on a gameweek, Keep up the fantastic work!
Open Controls+1. I'm not sure how's he's managed it, but now i'm starting to think Rooney is a viable RVP alternative 😐 😀
Open ControlsPerhaps because he is!
RVP has dominated up to now and Rooney has become unfashionable. The reason you're doubting yourself is because no-one has been talking about him probably.Open ControlsI have! Lots! Did Taarabt + RVP --> Valencia + Rooney this week. I'll need a cushion to hide behind at the weekend...
Open ControlsI recommend some alcohol in the household 😉
Open ControlsFair enough. I should have said hardly anyone!
Good luck 😀Open Controls
I think he is too. Just doesn't come with that added 'when in doubt captain the dutchess of scoring when he wants' factor
Open ControlsAfter last weekend I'm starting to think that could be a good thing - didn't even consider Tevez, which in retrospect was pretty stupid. Does having RVP make you overlook other, better captaincy options?
Open ControlsIt does. Definitely. It's the fear factor of him exploding.
Open ControlsDefinitely, especially because of his price tag. It's unfortunate for Tevez owners like yourself that he hadn't done anything in 2 games...which made your faith in captaining him non-existent perhaps. Look on the brightside, at least you got the 19 points!
Open ControlsI don't know. I captain Berba last weekend and (VC) RVP. Turns out they were the only two players in my attack to draw blanks! D'oh.
Open ControlsBeen without RVP since gameweek 7 and although its not really bitten me just yet the wife has to do 1 Extra washload on a Saturday now. :p

I love it too. Dousing fire / fanning flames article is an excellent read on how to view what happened in the previous GW. Must-read imo.
Open Controls
Fantastic... just pulled the trigger on Guthrie->Puncheon which I was quite bored by as a transfer, now I've popped onto the site to find this article. Hopefully it can perk my interest!
Open ControlsSeems like a very sensible one, especially if you have Michu/Suarez/Fellaini bans to cover.
Open ControlsMy transfer too this week. I was so pleased to get rid of Guthrie, and plan on playing Puncheon
Open ControlsPuncheon is the only viable way out from Guthrie atm. Did the transfer this week as well. Punch could come in handy when Michu gets his 5th yellow.
Open ControlsAgree, had no exit from Guthrie until Puncheon. Good fixtures for saints too, gives me renewed interest after I stupidly sold lambert.
Open Controls
Hey folks
I have 2 FT and £1.5m in the bank.
Foster, Begovic
Baines, Davies, Demel, Cuellar, Gorkks
Nolan, Michu, Bale, Fellaini, Sterling
Ba, RVP, Aguero
Pick one of these:
1. Foster and Davies out for Ruddy and Jose Enrique.
2. Foster to Ruddy to free up funds and save FT.
3. Foster to Mignolet and save FT
Thoughts please?!
Thank you!!Open Controls4 - davies out for gibbs or someone else [save 1ft]
Open Controls
Right, I'm this close to pulling the trigger on McAuley > Cuellar and Berbatov > Giroud (2 FT) unless anyone can talk me out of it...
Open Controlsi know, that's why i'm holding off... I'm definitely doing McAuley > Cuellar, and then it's up for grabs whether Nolan gets the chop for Puncheon or Berba for Giroud...
Open Controls
There's no way I'd do Berba > Giroud personally. Don't forget it's only Giroud's first season and he might not be able to keep up this consistency.
McCauley > Cuellar seems sensibleOpen ControlsThanks for your advice. Would you ditch Nolan at this point, and if so, for whom?
Open ControlsNot sure. I have a feeling that Nolan/West Ham won't be too fussed about playing 'big' teams and will still offer some value. If I had him I'd still be tempted to sell for the right player. Not sure who that would be sorry!
Open Controls
Start Simpson or Gorkks?
Open ControlsGorkss
Open Controls
If one day Guthrie will be able to play again, does he has a chance to appear in the starting 11? Or will he be bench fodder for Reading like he is for me? I don't need him until gw19.
Open ControlsWrong. You have no clue when you will need him.
Open ControlsHarsh...
Open ControlsYes I do, I'm very happy with 2 defenders that can come from my bench until gw19. But the question was, will he get a starting place?
Open ControlsPlenty of suspension, injuries will take place between now & gwk 19! You never know or when you will need them..
Open ControlsI know, but there will also be 6 FT's. I just want him as a good bench option from GW19+. For now he can do what he wants on my bench,
Open Controls
McDermott doesn't really seem to fancy him. Shame really; Guthrie is Reading's only adequate passer in the middle of the park.
Open ControlsThanks Snake, that is my main worry.
Open Controls
Team for the weekend:
Jaask
Baines Cameron Cuellar
Bale Cazorla (vc) Sterling Michu
RVP(c) Berba Tevez
Fed; Ridgewell, Demel, Fellaini
I have 2 free tranfers, nothing obvious to do so i'm gonna go for Demel -> Davies/Clyne and save the other transfer, any suggestions?Open ControlsGreat team, Viper. Get rid of Cazorla 😉
I like the Demel to Davies given that Southampton miss a game in GW18, i think.Open ControlsCazorla is staying put, we've been through this 🙂
Yeah, i'm thinking Davies purely because Swansea are a much better team than Southampton..
Cazorla -> Walcott in a couple weeks could be on the cards. It will be a move that involves Tevez -> Suarez most likely..Open Controls
billy jones or wisdom probably better options in the budget range, as is michael turner (possibly injured for this week)
Open Controls
For the non RVP owners, who will be your captain this week ?
Open ControlsI'm fancying an accumlator tomorrow. any gambling geniuses got any tips? 5-10 teams i think.
Open ControlsMy betting tip:
Never bet on more than 3 variables
Instead, bet bigger on 1 variableOpen Controlsbetting is only gambling when you dont know what your doing.
Open ControlsCity to beat chelsea on sunday.
Open ControlsUnited, Arsenal, Wigan, Norwich and Southampton could get decent odds. Fancy Norwich and Southampton for a few upsets this weekend
Open Controls
How's this looking for this week? Not entirely happy, but saving my FT for next week...
Begovic (Foster)
Baines / Baird / Simpson (Shawcross / Demel)
Mata / Cazorla / Sterling / Lallana (Kightly)
RVP (c) / Berbatov / Ba (v)
Thanks!Open ControlsMy team is
begovic (mcarthy)
baines rafael cameron (clyne demel)
bale sterling yaya valencia (kacanaclic)
RVP saurez (pog)
1 FT 2.5m in the bank
any suggestions appreciatedOpen Controlsyaya to puncheon, then pog to any striker you fancy on any given week!
Open Controls
So what people actually expecting out of RVP this weekend?
2 goals and 3 baps and am happyOpen ControlsNothing, always best to be pessimistic.
Open ControlsJesus, terrible English
Open ControlsI'm expecting double figures to be honest, although I have a feeling this will be the week Rooney goes nuts and turns everyone's heads.
Open Controlshahaha ive asked on 3 seperate occasions today if its worth bringing in ole granny shagger for a two week blast partnering persie in my side and i got a resounding no 😛 playing deep, persie is the clearly the guy to have but we all know he is one of those explosive players a score of 15 wouldnt really suprese anyone would it
Open Controls
one key thing to note for the next 3 gws is make sure you have a good bench.
If you are making transfers like berbatov to fletcher for example and you have ben arfa and walcott you may want to think twice. Get rid of the injuries and make sure you bring in someone who will play even if they are to be benched.
I expect alot of rotation with 3 games in space of 7 daysOpen ControlsJust saw a stat, but it was not sourced so take it with a pinch of salt.
Apparently, it takes on average 57 crosses to score a goal.
I'm only trudging through this now, but anyone interested in Everton/Baines here is two links.
http://www.shotsontarget.co.uk/2012/11/team-analysis-chelsea-west-brom-and.html
http://theexecutionersbong.wordpress.com/Open ControlsCheers Brian, Baines still has the second most assists of any defender. And Riise has one more, one of which was a flukey penalty assist. I personally don't think his average of an assist every 4 games is bad. You can discuss why he hasn't had more assists but that's football! They can't all go in.
Open ControlsNp. More interesting readings then anything else. The 2nd link has some stuff on why Everton create so much, but score a bit less then you'd expect for the number and how a formation change to Fellaini going into midfield might change things. Could be relevant to Baines potential going forward.
Or just a long (interesting) read on real life tactics 😛Open Controls
The 2nd link has posts that pretty much deconstruct the Everton attack and shooting accuracy.
Very interesting.
For the lazy, it is enough to re-ignite some worries about Baines. Basically Everton shoot from every angle in the box, over a quarter of the goals from areas wide of the goal, but in the box. That is..odd.Open ControlsThat was mentioned in the scoutcast actually (if I remember correctly). It could be that they're going for a lot of shots on goal rather than trying to walk it in.
I've not checked the stats or anything though, purely speculation, but it wouldn't surprise me.Open Controls- Open Controls
Nice one.
Not sure where this leaves us really. Are we expecting them to continue getting a lot of shots but converting them at a much lower rate than other teams? As long as they've got goals in them, I'm happy owning Everton players.
I wonder how important this is:
"Over a quarter of them (marked with an x) have come from areas wide of the goal (unsurprisingly, the left side). This is very unusual amongst the sides who score a lot of goals."
Assuming it is true, does it necessarily mean that it's harder to score goals from crosses from the left side?Open ControlsId expect Jelavic to start converting at his normal rate soon after this slump. Might help a tad, not by great amounts though.
From the other players, Fellaini, Osman and Mirallas, sounds like we can expect more of the same.
If they start creating less chances against the better sides, ill be pretty worried. For now, it is so-so.
Id assume so, if the crosses aren't hitting a more central area of the box or players are just shooting on sight from every angle (Suarez syndrome last year). It would help explain the Baines question, alongside the poorer conversion rate of the aforementioned players.
Might explain why they aren't regressing to the mean (in a positive manner).Open Controls
You legend! Would love to see the source.
Open ControlsArticle from 2nd blog again. No source/referance for the stat though.

play Taraabt(mun) or Davies(LIV)?
Open ControlsNo, in 2!
Open Controls
Made a mistake with early transfer but was get annoyed with Newcastle's form as well as HBA who I transferred for Walcott. Will my team do OK? Never played with 3 MID's before.
Begovic (Federici)
Clyne - Cuellar - Baines - Cameron
Michu - Nolan - Mata (Walcott & Fellaini)
RVP - Tevez - BerbatovOpen Controlshow could i improve this team/squad
Begovic (jask)
Wisdom Cuellar Boyce (mc cauley, Cameron)
Mata Hazard Michu Maloney (Fellaini)
berba Suarez(vc) van persie (C)
imput welcome ..tempted by hazard to silvaOpen ControlsAgree. I wouldn't want both Mata & Hazard and considering no city cover it would seem a logical move.
Open Controls
Who do yas reckon I should play Pienaar ( home to Norwich) or. Sterling (away to Swansea)
Open ControlsPienaar

Would you captain Boyce(RDG) or RVP(QPR) this week? Tough call...

I think I would like to see one or two more consistent games from Puncheon before I invest.
