Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 27 – Sunday

Daniel Sturridge and Wilfried Bony both bag a brace as Liverpool squeeze past Swansea in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield. Loic Remy returns from suspension to fire Newcastle’s winner against Villa, whilst Robert Snodgrass propels himself onto Fantasy radars by helping Norwich get the better of Spurs:

Sturridge Steals Limelight from Suarez
Boasting a goal or more in every Premier League game since his return to Liverpool’s starting XI, with 31 points in his last two and only three blanks this entire season – Daniel Sturridge is on fire. A 16-point haul against Swansea on Sunday brought his average to almost 11 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per game over the last seven Gameweeks, eclipsing Luis Suarez’s returns by some 30 points over the same period. Perhaps he still has some way to go to reach the lofty heights of his ‘SAS’ counterpart’s early season form, but with the Uruguayan failing to breach the five-point barrier in his last four Gameweeks, Sturridge is making his own case for ‘essential’ status and the captaincy armband, while Suarez’s titanic ownership is beginning to slip.

Charitable Liverpool Defence Under Fire
With another three goals shipped at home to strugglers Swansea following the two conceded in their previous outing at Fulham, Liverpool’s defence is looking a far cry from the one which saw them register three consecutive 1-0 wins at the start of the season. Given the Reds’ upcoming blank in Gameweek 29, investment in their rearguard was always looking unlikely. Perhaps the tactic is to invest in opposing sides’ attackers; Southampton and United welcome the Merseyside outfit in Gameweeks 28 and 30 respectively and Liverpool’s defensive frailties will certainly stir up some optimism for owners of the likes of Rickie Lambert and Robin Van Persie with those fixtures in mind.

Bony Bags a Brace on the Road
In scoring a brace against Liverpool, Wilfried Bony registered his first league goals for Swansea outside of Wales since joining from Dutch side Vitesse. With three strikes in his last three games for the Swans, and some long-awaited away goals to his name, confidence will be high ahead of an appealing set of home fixtures which see the Welsh side welcome Crystal Palace, West Brom and Norwich to the Liberty Stadium in their next three home ties. The Ivorian striker seems to flourish with home support, but with Sturridge and Suarez accounting for two of most sides’ desired three forwards, competition is exceptionally high for strikers looking to make that third spot in our attack.

Lively Remy Returns as a Differential
Newcastle went into their mid-table clash with Aston Villa in dreadful form, having blanked in all but one of their league games in 2014. The return of another differential striker, Loic Remy, would be central to any turnabout in attacking form and the Frenchman didn’t disappoint when he coolly despatched the Magpies’ injury time winner. With his seven efforts at goal bettered only by Nikica Jelavic of all strikers for the Gameweek, and some promising fixtures surrounding Newcastle’s Gameweek 29 blank (hul, (blank), ful, CPL, sot), Fantasy managers may see the 8.0-priced Remy as an emerging differential ahead of the season’s run-in.

Snodgrass On the Radar
With a turbulent set of Gameweeks quickly approaching, Fantasy managers will have been delighted to see Robert Snodgrass’s return to FPL form. His match winner and maximum bonus points against Spurs took the Scot’s average to almost six points per Gameweek over his last five appearances, including two goals and an assist, while he placed third in our ICT rankings behind Santi Cazorla and Eden Hazard over the past 6 Gameweeks. The winger, now available at just 5.9 in FPL, faces a trip to Villa Park in Gameweek 28 followed by a home tie against Stoke, offering Fantasy managers an in-form, budget-friendly option as they look for players to fill out their fixture-starved squads.

Norwich Defence Primed for Investment
Chris Hughton’s side maintained their 100% home clean-sheet record for 2014 with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham at Carrow Road on Sunday – a fact made all the more impressive given that Spurs had scored in each of their last 10 consecutive Premier League fixtures. The Canaries have an enviable run of fixtures which place them top of our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks (avl, STO, sot, SUN, swa, WBA) and with several options below 4.7 in FPL, including 4.3-priced Martin Olsson, Norwich present an excellent, budget friendly solution for our defences through the blanks and beyond.

Spurs’ Midfield Minefield Faltering
Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood again chose to keep Christian Eriksen on the bench for the full 90 minutes, despite losing Etienne Capoue to an early injury and withdrawing Paulinho just after the hour mark against Norwich. Be it rest, risk or rotation, Nabil Bentaleb is now the only Tottenham midfielder to have played 90 minutes with any real regularity over the past few Gameweeks and with tough fixtures following their home match against Cardiff in Gameweek 28 (che, ARS, SOT, liv), Sherwood’s behaviour looks set to be mirrored by Fantasy managers as the Spurs midfield makes way for more stable investments.

Because not everyone who plays the game studies the fixture list and knows about the blanks. There will be people who read about him being in training and bring him in. If he plays and scores in the cup final on sunday there could be lots of them.

Doesn't it need 75k NTI to rise, and he's already at -35% of the way to a fall? On that basis I very much doubt it but the more I think about it the more I hope it happens as it will make it harder for everyone to bring in.

Anecdote to illustrate the ways of casual players:

There's a guy in one of my minileagues who played a season and a half (active the whole time) before he realised that players automatically come off your subs bench when one of your first team doesn't play.

So I'm clearing my mind on my strategy for GW29 and basically chose to look at it from the perspective of the consequences that the transfers will do to your team for the remaining season.
    There are basically two options.

    1) Sort out your bench with players that will play in GW29
    - Although you probably won't be able to field 10-11 players in GW29, once GW29 is over you'll be approaching GW30 with all your big hitters and a fully powered bench (if most of your bench fodders are currently injured or out-of-favor)

    2) Ditch some of your big hitters, so you can field a decent team in GW29
    - Although GW29 coulds serve you with a couple of points more, you'll approach GW30 without some of your best players and a non-functional bench. Then you'll need to spend your precious transfers on getting your big-hitters back and your bench will probably look s**t till the end of the season.

I think it's a easy choice for me now. 1) should it be.

Besides I'm not sure whether the likes of Snodgrass, Lambert against Palace away, William, Adam against Norwich at Carrow Road or any popular GW29 option will outscore the cheapos like Steven Davis, Puncheon and Livermore,

Spot on. I've been saying for a while now that the key to GW29 will be not taking hits. With the point average set to be low anyway, bringing in players who will most probably score 2/3pts isn't the wisest strategy. So, if you have some free transfers, choose who to bring in wisely; if you haven't, just keep calm and walk through the storm harmless. There will be enough people shooting themselves in the foot already.

Also, if more games are added to GW31 there won't be many trades left to fill your team with DGW'ers if you haven't got a WC up your sleeve.

Definitely. I think people that are sitting with non-playing benchers and are ditching Yaya instead of fixing it could be in trouble. I'm not taking a hit and utilizing my entire bench for GW29, that's for sure 🙂 Play 9, 10 or 11 isn't a huge deal with the remaining fixtures having limited explosive potential.

This. Adebayor would be my captain anyway, but after conceding four against Hull at home, I guess the decision it's more than a no-brainer now. Plus, Tottenham will be desperate to bounce back from their recent disappointment and recover their confidence.

Sturridge is a better fantasy prospect than Suarez.

Kun possibly. Ade I think is hoodwinking many. Quite a few lucky points, always starts with a spurt. I'd say he is in for some very disappointing returns from here till the end of the season. The no brainer for me Suarez Studge Kun till the end of the season. Pool look lethal and scoring against anyone and Kun is Kun for a City with 3 DGWs, out of the ECL, and likely to bounce back into some serious goal scoring form soon.

I don't quite agree on Pool. They continue to struggle against good defences (bar mishaps, see Arsenal) and Suarez is starting to show signs of lesser goal involvement.

From GW29 onwards, Pool possibly only have 3 good fixtures imo - car AVL NEW. Certainly warrants a rethink about the SAS strategy.

Suarez was the best FPL option a while ago, when Sturridge was injured and he was Liverpool's lone forward. Since then, well, he's still getting his chances, but since the majority of them come from a wide position, his conversion rate isn't just as good. With a better prices and on form striker in Sturridge and with City having 3DGWs in the near future, he will go so I can bring in Aguero. Simple as that and I really don't know how people refuse to to see this.

How essential do you think Aguero is? He has a DGW but will he play both games? The Fulham games is a few days before an away trip to utd?

    22nd - FUL(H)
    25th - MUN (A)
    29th - ARS (A)
    5th - SOT(H)
    12th - LIV(A)

Pretty tough fixtures and just 2 days rest between the Fulham and Utd fixture. Then, just 3 days rest between the Utd fixture and the Arsenal one. I can't see him starting vs Fulham, can you?

Question is, have risks over Kosc and Bruce, also Eriksson needs to go so might only get 9/10 out this week. Would you do Eriksson>Nolan for a 4 pointer to guarantee at least 9 out with Ward as sub to make 10? Already did AJ+Berahino>Jedinak+Ade for free...

I'm not sure Nolan is worth a hit either to be fair. I have 0.1m spare so can cover another Nolan rise this week as I don't think Eriksson will drop again...

I agree he's made for the PL, and that I am slightly biased due to the fact that he annoyed me so much in Spain.

However, he was absolutely useless for Madrid and ever since he left Arsenal he hasn't been the same player. He has the talent but his mentality is so hot/cold that he will go on a burst of scoring when he wants to, and then as soon as he starts to feel comfortable, he stops.

I think he'll continue to bring in the odd points for the rest of the season but I also think that there are better options out there and (for the short term at least) there is going to be a lack of Ade hauls, or at the very least, less than the majority of people on here are expecting.

Yeah not too bad, team looking decent for next week and will be able to field 10 in GW29 without taking any hits - could take a -4 to shift mert and get 11 out but not sure if it's worth it

Made my transfers already this week, eriksen and dzeko or snod and ade and feeling pretty good about them, especially for a free!

10 players for you in GW 29 is decent with hits. You can then monitor to see if anything worth a hit presents itself.

My team is ok - I have 2FTs but only going to use 1 this week so that I have options for 29.

I'm considering losing Gerrard for Snodgrass.

            Yeah that's what I thought

If there was ever a time to take a hit for a defender it's probably next week as would only really cost me -2 in theory (unless they concede a shed load of goals)

    Hey Lads,

Been away for a week, need to do a bit of minor surgery ahead of the problematic GWs.

Just a couple of quick questions:

    1) Is there any consensus that Burner may come back into the team following Cardiff's drubbing?

    2) How likely is Yoshida to keep his place for the next couple of games?

    Cheers.

Burner and Yoshi are/could be problems for me - if they play my team looks a whole lot better for next week and in particular GW 29. If they don't I could be caught short.

      1) possibly but this is the second time now he's been dropped, clearly not the favourite... I'd be a little worried if I owned him but not worth getting rid as probably more pressing transfers elsewhere?

      2) he got his goal but they were very leaky, I'd say he's going to lose his place in the near future

    Team for this week.

    Adrian
    Ivanovic, Coleman, Shaw, Koscielny, Ward
    Hazard, Lallana
    Adebayor, Suarez, Sturridge

bench- Mannone, Parker, Mata, Yaya 2.7 itb 1 FT

Thinking of saving my FT this week . Is that mad?
Then Kos > Evra next week? and maybe Adrian> Speroni if West Ham blank Wk 29?

Anyone considering Lallana as a captain option this week? Pool defence looks ropey!

Nice...good when the tables point the right direction.along with the season ticker. I've noticed before that you never use the ICT threat stats Doosra. I find that one to be the best "catch all" stat available..any reason why you don't use it ?

To be clear, I like to get a "smell" of what is actually happening, and my tables don't really work as a snapshot, only as a page in a story. So other stats are more important to me.

The ICT thing mislead me two Seasons ago, and I have mistrusted it ever since.

5 goals from 7 shots for Nolan 😯

    I need some help please.

    1) I have no keeper for GW29. Is Mannone to Boruc a good move? I know Mannone has 3 great fixtures but I also have Howard whom I will play at least 2 of these 3 games (30-32).

    2) For SAS owners, wha are you going to do for the blank in GW29? Bench both or ditch 1 of them?

      1) hmmm I wouldn't bother, unless you have no pressing transfers elsewhere? A transfer in hunks crucial period for a backup GK seems like a bit of a waste!

      2) benching both, no brainer really, don't want to lose either! Also benching Coleman for the same reason

Only games that could possibly be played are the ones not televised and not yet scheduled... what does that leave? Everton game? One of the Sunderland games...?
