Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Scout League Update

As Fantasy managers while away the hours until tomorrow night’s first semi-final of Euro 2012, we’re rolling out some updates on the progress of the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across the various Fantasy games so far. First up, we begin a look at the McDonald’s game, analysing those managers who are currently leading the way after the quarter finals:

Nenad Todorovic sits at the top of the Scout league after registering a score of 71 in the quarter-finals. Jordi Alba, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil were his stand out individuals, while he chose to stick with Cristiano Ronaldo as captain after the Portugal man notched against Czech Republic on day one. Nenad now sits second overall in the McDonald’s rankings, just a single point off the summit with a total of 272 points.

Isaac Lundall is next up, just a couple of points behind. His decision to double up on England and Spain defenders paid off, with captain Ashley Cole racking up 14 points in the previous round. The top two have quite a gap over the chasing pack, with Lee Harding sitting in third place on 258 points, 14 off the top. Picking a couple of Portugal’s backline against the Czechs paid off, while Joleon Lescott, Jordi Alba and captain Sami Khedira helped produce a score 69 points in the quarters – Lee is the third Fantasy manager we currently have in the overall top 10, situated in tenth place.

Surapong Lertthiratoj currently resides in fourth place in the Scout league after picking up a 62 point haul last time out. While his decision to back a couple of Italy defenders paid off, his faith in Germany’s backline backfired after Greece scored twice against Joachim Low’s outfit; Mesut Ozil vindicated Surapong’s decision to hand the playmaker the armband by picking up a 16 point captain return.

Winding up our review of the top five, we have Paul Robinson – a new entrant to the Scout league. Paul was the top scoring player of our featured Fantasy managers with a 78 point haul, thanks to his decision to hand Xabi Alonso the armband; the Spain midfielder duly obliged with a 28 point return, while the likes of Jordi Alba, Joao Pereira and Joleon Lescott boosted his tally at the back.

For the contributors, Paul (I’m talking about myself in the third person here, shocking habit) is the top scoring manager so far – sitting just outside the top 50 in the Scout league on 236 points and 604 overall. Doubling up on Spain’s defence and leaving the armband on Ronaldo was enough for 60 points. Mark is next up, sitting in 187 in the Scout league. Taking a leaf out of Spain’s book, his striker-less 5-5-0 formation harvested 64 points, with captain Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart returning 22 points between them in the goalless draw with Italy. Jonty stands in 649th place in the Scout league after a 54 point haul in the quarters. His decision to captain Italy’s Andrea Barzagli against England paid off with a 14 point return, while Jordi Alba also boosted his tally with 10 points at the back.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Calling the starting dilemmas. Fabre over Torres. Spain will me more comfortable keeping the ball, and maybe having a bit indirect offense, than trying to put Torres in all the time and than defending Ronaldo and Nani on the counter.

Klose over Gomez- Klose is the coaches pet, and now that he is on form the coach wont switch him. Podolski, Müller on the wings for their defensive ability and discipline, they will be needed do some dirty work also this game wont be easy so veterans ability to stay patient will be welcome. Also young and fast players like Reus and Shürrle will make better impact subs.

And also Ozil links up better with Klose, and germany need him going strong to win.

I think you have definitely called the first one.

The other one is a toss up imo, I wouldnt be surprised of Low still hadn't decided himself.

Im feeling more confident on Fabre and Klose, I think Reus could come in for either Poldi or Muller. But still feel the old guns have the edge.

So true, I will still probably avoid him in my team, having a punt on Klose or Poldi will do, Other people need to be nailed on, since I cant afford over 11 starters and if more than 1 dont play there will be trouble.

Toss a coin on the first two, both just as likely to get attaching returns.

Alba is more likely for attacking returns. Arebloa is a less attacking fullback than Alba.

yeah it is! still need to finish work on the new website though! and finalize the rules and stuff.

probably not for a while. i'd guess sometime in august. maybe we'll open it early but leave it open for a while. want to make sure all the regulars are back and have a chance to apply

also not sure if it'll happen or not but ENR may get us some advertisement from the scouts. i'm hoping maybe they'll write an article about us/our leagues and such but that might be a bit too much wishful thinking

plus once the website is done (or mostly done) you can follow it and get email notification whenever we make a new post which would inform you when applications open

Why not just set up a series of fpl mini leagues, as many or as few as required, with as many or few participants as you like, a certain proportion of which qualify for a cl style tournament? In short, what it gained by pretending to be a European team other than arbitrary restrictions?

because its much more fun to be playing against regulars and people you know than random lurkers! and this way there will be more banter and such. plus its more fun to represent a team and then hopefully qualify them for CL or europa and represent them there

plus this is unique. anyone can go and create fpl h2h min leagues. also with mini leagues we cant split it into two 19 week seasons with relegation and adding new managers

makes it more enjoyable. you must've missed some of the unique and exciting pressers last season! some managers really got into it for the CL. like newman changed his name to newman-cini and had some pretty comical pressers.

plus theres all the reasons that the h2h minileagues wouldn't work which I listed above.

but if you dont see the point you dont have to participate. you'll just be missing out though!

It adds a lot to the banter in the tournament. When people get a team like Shaktar Donetsk, you don their colors for a while, quote them, and frankly even start following them. You issue press conferences from Ukraine....I remember Fuzzy doing such a brilliant job at this last year.

Why don't you join up this year, and get a taste of the action for yourself? Then you can witness for yourself how much cooler this is. Also there's entry to ucl/europa directly from here.

read some of those pressers and you'll see what you're talking about! don't think you'd ever get anything like that in a normal h2h minileague.

It's certainly a success, seems a very popular idea, I just wondered whether the adoption of real team names was worth the structural difficulties that attend the different numbers of teams and different season lengths etc.

the only structural difficulty is that the bundesliga only has 18 teams but we have a solution for that which I explained in a comment that you can see by following the link on my initial comment

and it shouldn't be too difficult cuz pratik has written a program that will pull fpl scores from people's pages and automatically update the league tables!!

its only intense now as we are doing the whole planning for the entire season and deciding upon all the rules and stuff. plus we had to decide who to add which took a lot of discussion and also now we have to decide on this 5th league situation plus theres getting the new website set up. i figure after the season starts it'll be a lot easier! and next off season and season will be easier than this one as we'll already have it set up pretty much

ohhhh i gotcha! yeahh that must be pretty bad. so i'm guessing you go to a local university so you're just living at home?

I like it, prefer Hummels over Badstuber but aint much in it. If Fab and Gomez start(which I think they both will) it's a quality team

Thanks Jamie that's positive. Gomez and Fab are my main worry. I can see if Fab will start but pondering Gomez to Silva just to be on the safe side and swapping a Spain mid or def to Germany.

just wait for the lineups and then make changes then.

yeahh if BOTH pedro and torres started i'd guess it'd be silva and cesc dropping out. can't see xabi, xavi or iniesta dropped and busquets is a cdm so they wouldn't drop him either i dont think. plus he is actually very important to the team, very underappreciated player

Surely, RVP is lost for Arsenal? When Wenger confirmed Giroud, he said he wanted a triple line with Van Persie, Giroud and Podolski up front. They're all left-footed... Just sayin'.. 🙄

      Podolski - Giroud - Walcott

Giroud certainly will not score as much as RVP in his first season and let's face it without RVP's 30+ goals last season, Arsenal might very well have lost many games last season...

So RVP has to be retained by Arsenal...

But you will be effectively be replacing RVP with Giroud + Podolski, for around the same money. Neither will score as many as RVP last season, but combined they could score more, and increases flexibility and allows some rotation.

Official lineups on uefa.com are published exactly one hour before the match starts...

But twitter updates start at least 120 minutes before the match with many news tweets and magazine tweets claimimg their lineups as authentic...

You can choose what to believe or trust in uefa.com lineups...

Well my only argument to that would be with Portugal keeping only 30-40% of the ball, how many chances will Ronaldo realistically have?

Other than that, its not like i am compromising on my team at other places. I have some big hitting defenders and Midfielders out there.

I definitely want to have that German striker who is going to start. But am i going to be happy with having the one who is benched? No.

One of Klose or Gomez need to give you atleast 20 points for this to work...

At other teams, a combination of other starting forwards should be giving them 20 points... if one of them is a captain...

Most of the decent options: Gomez, Klose, Silva, Torres, Muller and Podolski are far from nailed on.

I suppose the only one I can fully rely on is Ronaldo but he is very expensive and may not have an impact against Spain.

    @TW

Don't let the numbers stand in way of a good idea - they can always be fixed. For example direct qualification for top 4, and qualification knock-out round for the rest. UCL is 13 GWs, so plenty of time for qualification rounds. If it's just that it's not a good idea for you guys, then it's fair, otherwise there is always a way to fit it into the real system.

What does everyone else think about the "Rest of Europe league"?

I'm a bit out of the loop...is what is being proposed a champions league style tournament based on Maccy D Champs League game results, or is it using champions league team names and basing the game on FPL scores.

The reason I ask is that champs league game may be too much for me to take part in, but an innovative competition that utlises FPL scores would be more my thing.

it will be similar to the CL and Europa leagues from last season that ENR with the help of Parm Udit and myself ran.

if you dont know what i'm talking about check out the google doc we used for the CL:

            yupp!

"So with the pressure on the UEFA council to deliver something equally exciting for fpl, this is what we have come up with. So without further ado, let me lay out the big picture (Version 1.3) :
            a) We get 5 leagues started based on – EPL, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, Rest of the World (Parmtree has recently pointed out that Bundesliga has only 18 teams, hence the change)
            b) All 5 of these leagues host the popular 1-1 format." and theres more but thats the main info in addition to what i just posted below

in that case count me in. I vowed this season to only do FPL and Metro due to time constraints....so this seems ideal.

Be weird doing this without Camzy backing me up, but happy to fly solo if I get through the selection process.

Look forward to the details when FPL opens.

      here i found it!

Now the plan is that both the Champions League and Europa, take their participants from the leagues.
      Proposed format for qualification
      UCL - a) top 5 teams in each league – 5×5 + A(Set of 7 teams)
      Europa - b) next 5 teams in each league – 5×5 + B(Set of 7 teams)
A and B are a set of teams chosen by the council. Past winners – ENR(UCL) + Duffman(Europa) if they have not qualified automatically will be a guaranteed selection as one of the teams.
Rest can be new members, league members, special contributors, scout-team members or even UEFA council members but they only have 14 seats to fight for.
To keep things interesting for people at the lower half of the table, we were thinking that the bottom 3/4/5 teams (number not decided yet) will not be allowed for the selection to the UCL or the Europa under any circumstances. NO EXCEPTIONS.

While I agree with @ lateriser12 that the German striker (plus Ozil) are likely to be the highest scorers this round I think the best strategy is not to get both Klose and Gomez but to nail one's balls to the line and plump for one.

Logically against a solid defence and with movement needed to get round Pirlo the German manager will pick Klose. This gets the best out of Ozil. That said Klose is far from nailed on so with all cup competitions risks need to be taken.

I'm a safety first kinda guy so will probably go for the safety of the spanish line up rather than rotation Germans. But the Klose or Gomez decision will be key for many this gameweek.

Safety first might not be a bad idea. Im considering that too, depends of course if Spain play any strikers :). Everyone is thinking that German strikers are a must, but Italians are a much better team than Portugal IMO, so the safe route might be the right one. Especially considering you could own a 11 mil bench player when you can only afford to put 11 players on the pitch.

I am hoping on some good news today in the press conf. A Klose/Gomez knock would be perfect.

Im not sure safety first works very well in this situation. Ive gambled on both Klose and Ozil for the very reasons you mention.

I agree that we need to swing for the fences in the semis and final. Fortune favours the brave.

I don't think that Ozil is a gamble though. If I could afford him I would put him in my team also. I haven't held onto Greeks and Czechs though. I have a full squad of 15 players.

The Klose/Gomez problem is a lot of risk though, they're both very expensive.. Isn't there a mole in the German team though? Maybe the team news will be leaked again.

agree, Ozil is not gamble. He is superb, especially with Klose

This is certainly a puzzle! What do you guys think about this?

    Casillas
    Boateng, Hummels, Alba, Balzaretti
    Pirlo, Fabregas, Busquets, Khedira, Özil
    Ronaldo, Balotelli, Oliveira

    0.1 in the bank

I could go Fabregas > Xabi and Balotelli > Torres depending on who starts of the two.

Should leave me with 12 starters

TOUGH AS BOTH SETS HAVE ONE PLAYER WHO IS A DOUBT. WAIT FOR LINEUPS AND THEN PICK BALZARETTI AND MAYBE PEDRO???

We've all made our drafts. Its all going to change once we see that Spain vs. Portugal line up with 1 or 2 surprises in there.

Just a thought for those who haven't locked in their transfers yet. Perhaps lock in those that you're sure of now and leave the Fabregas/Torres or Klose/Gomez decisions until the last moment.

I've found that their servers come under a lot of load close to the deadline and it might be worse today due to the enormity of these matches. It would be a disaster not to be able to effect your transfers due to contention on their servers.

Or maybe the internets in South Africa are just rubbish. 🙂

Anyhow, I've already locked in all my transfers. I wouldn't want my ADSL line to go down at an awkward moment.

It's a good point about the servers clogging up closer to the deadline time. My internet at home is being fixed at the moment so I'm going to have to lock them in ahead of the deadline...steering well clear of German forwards unless the mole reveals something this afternoon!
