Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Scout League Update

As Fantasy managers while away the hours until tomorrow night’s first semi-final of Euro 2012, we’re rolling out some updates on the progress of the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across the various Fantasy games so far. First up, we begin a look at the McDonald’s game, analysing those managers who are currently leading the way after the quarter finals:

Nenad Todorovic sits at the top of the Scout league after registering a score of 71 in the quarter-finals. Jordi Alba, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil were his stand out individuals, while he chose to stick with Cristiano Ronaldo as captain after the Portugal man notched against Czech Republic on day one. Nenad now sits second overall in the McDonald’s rankings, just a single point off the summit with a total of 272 points.

Isaac Lundall is next up, just a couple of points behind. His decision to double up on England and Spain defenders paid off, with captain Ashley Cole racking up 14 points in the previous round. The top two have quite a gap over the chasing pack, with Lee Harding sitting in third place on 258 points, 14 off the top. Picking a couple of Portugal’s backline against the Czechs paid off, while Joleon Lescott, Jordi Alba and captain Sami Khedira helped produce a score 69 points in the quarters – Lee is the third Fantasy manager we currently have in the overall top 10, situated in tenth place.

Surapong Lertthiratoj currently resides in fourth place in the Scout league after picking up a 62 point haul last time out. While his decision to back a couple of Italy defenders paid off, his faith in Germany’s backline backfired after Greece scored twice against Joachim Low’s outfit; Mesut Ozil vindicated Surapong’s decision to hand the playmaker the armband by picking up a 16 point captain return.

Winding up our review of the top five, we have Paul Robinson – a new entrant to the Scout league. Paul was the top scoring player of our featured Fantasy managers with a 78 point haul, thanks to his decision to hand Xabi Alonso the armband; the Spain midfielder duly obliged with a 28 point return, while the likes of Jordi Alba, Joao Pereira and Joleon Lescott boosted his tally at the back.

For the contributors, Paul (I’m talking about myself in the third person here, shocking habit) is the top scoring manager so far – sitting just outside the top 50 in the Scout league on 236 points and 604 overall. Doubling up on Spain’s defence and leaving the armband on Ronaldo was enough for 60 points. Mark is next up, sitting in 187 in the Scout league. Taking a leaf out of Spain’s book, his striker-less 5-5-0 formation harvested 64 points, with captain Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart returning 22 points between them in the goalless draw with Italy. Jonty stands in 649th place in the Scout league after a 54 point haul in the quarters. His decision to captain Italy’s Andrea Barzagli against England paid off with a 14 point return, while Jordi Alba also boosted his tally with 10 points at the back.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

if Torres isn't starting get him out for Olivera and use the cash to upgrade Marchisio to Alosno, Perreira to Pepe and then upgrade a filler to Khedira.

LONG POST. Thoughts on the semi-final squad strategy (SSSS... nice). More specifically, how many players should you have from each country?

The first thing you must decide is your squad size "N" - here I'm talking about how many players are left in the competition. Realistically N will be anywhere between 11 and 13. I've managed 14, but since it involves bnched Varela and Oliveira they don't really count much as additional players anyway.

Now the objective is to make sure we have N = 11 for the final. Since we have 4 transfers, the maximum number of players we can afford to have eliminated this round is 4 so that we can replace them all. Note that even this is not a guarantee. If your cheapest players were eliminated there is no guarantee that you will have the money to replace them.

Now the higher N is the easier it is to meet the objective as you can afford to have more players eliminated. For example, if N = 13, you can afford to have up to 6 players eliminated. On the other hand, the higher N is, the poorer your players will be. Also, the higher N is, the more players might be eliminated and therefore the more money will be lying around in eliminated players, reducing the quality of your team for the final.

The lower N is, the better your players will be, but the less substitution chances you will have. It is also harder to meet the objective as you can't afford to have as many players eliminated. For example, if N = 11, you can afford to have only 4 players eliminated. However, since your players are better, they may be more likely to go through, so you may have fewer players eliminated. Also, if expensive players are eliminated, they will be easier to replace as their replacements are likely to be cheaper.

Going down the middle, it looks to me like it is possible to have a squad of 12 (1 sub chance) so long you don't go down the CR7 + Ozil + Iniesta route. In that case you can have up to 5 players eliminated. Let's look what happens if you pick a squad with 8 favourites (4 Spain & 4 Germany) and 4 underdogs (2 Italy and 2 Portugal).

    * If both favourites prevail (likely) you guarantee yourself 11. In fact, since you only need to replace 3 eliminated players, you have a leftover transfer to work around pricing problems or adjust players from your favourites.

    * In the next best scenario where one favourite and one underdog prevail (semi-likely), you guarantee yourself 10.players, having the discretion to take a hit to get 11. Importantly, replacing your eliminated favourite's players will be guaranteed since their replacements will be cheaper.

    * In the worst case scenario where both underdogs prevail (very unlikely) you will guarantee yourself 8 players. This would be a big problem and it is assumed this will not happen.

You can obviously adjust your weighting of the favourites & underdog brackets based on which you fancy more. 5 Germany & 3 Spain vs 3 Portugal and 1 Italy for example.

I'll be honest with what I am going to do. It's a simple strategy really

3 players from each team -12 players

      6 players go out,

I have left with 6 players. 4 transfers. That makes it 10 players.
I take one hit of 3 pts and I am get my perfect bunch of 11 players.

If you were doubling up on one team (either Germany or Spain). So simply speaking, if your predictions were right, you won't need a 3 pt hit. But I would dread the consequences if you are wrong.

I like the simplicity of it Pratik! So compared to mine it's got the same outcome no matter the result. A worse outcome if both favourites win, the same if one wins, and a much better outcome if both favourites lose. Mine is just effectively saying "It won't be Italy v Portugal". Although I believe someone here has predicted that 😉

I take it you're also not going all out for a Spanish/German CS then but spreading it.

I spread it out last time too - with German, Spanish, Italy, England, and Portugal (no France, mind you). It worked out great for me. If I had tripled up on Spain, and doubled up on German, or vica-versa, I would have lost points both way.

But then I must add, I am simpling hedging my bets for the mini-league. It's not that I was playing for the cup. So if you guys take risks, I understand completely.

I may not go with anyone from Italy in defense, Germany should really find the back of the net. Probably thinking of doubling of on Spain at the back, and giving Ronaldo the armband. Either will have to be successful.

My outlined squad is 5 Spa 5 Por (although one is Oliviera) 2 Ger 2 Ita which means 7 go out 7 stay in and 4 transfers should hopefully mean I can field 11 (even if one ends up as Oliviera) for the final without point hits. This however does have its drawback as I have lower valued players than who a lot of people will have however I will hopefully still utilise the subs for extra points also my belief that there wont be many goals leads me to being able to do this due to defenders being cheaper...

My perspective is that there's a hedging continuum in play here.

Call the 4 teams W1, L1, W2, L2 where W1 and L1 are the respective winners and losers of the first game and W2 and L2 are the respective winners and losers of the second game.

Now it's possible to choose players from L1 and L2 that produce a return in the semis if:
      (1) They are defenders and the game ends 0-0 and they lose on penalties.
      (2) They lose in a high scoring game (e.g. 3-2).
However, in general, winning teams are more likely to have players that will produce returns. For this reason, and because you want to have enough players in the final, you want to maximise the players from W1 and W2 that you choose for the semis.

Because we don't know the identities of W1, L1, W2 and L2 beforehand, the least risky strategy for maximising the number of players in W1 and W2 would be to choose 4 players from 3 countries and 3 players from the other. That way, you'd get a minimum of 7 and maximum of 8 players from W1 and W2, allowing you to use your 4 free transfers to guarantee yourself 11 or 12 players in the final.

Or you could swing for the fences. This is the other extreme of this hedging continuum. This is to choose 6 and 3 players from the teams in the first semi and 6 players from a single team in the second semi. In this case, you're betting that the teams that you chose 6 players each from are W1 and W2. The problem with this is that in the worst case scenario (i.e. the teams you picked from are really L1 and L2), you wind up with 3 players from W1 and W2, and your 4 free transfer will bring you up to 7 valid players in the final in the worst case.

All distributions along this hedging continuum between (6 3 6 0) and (4 3 4 4) will vary with regard to the number of players that you are guaranteed to have in the final. This number will be between 7 and 11 (in the worst case).

So how homogenous or otherwise you make your distribution will depend on how confident you are about particular teams winning through to the final and how willing you are to have fewer than 11 valid players in your squad for the final. The less willing you are to risk being short of players in the final, the more homogenous you need to make your distributions.

Note that homogenous distributions (in spite of points (1) and (2) above) can lead to poor scores in the semis due to scorers in W1 and W2 causing defenders in L1 and L2 to score poorly.

So the greater risk of heterogeneous distributions can lead to perdition in the final, but can also bring great rewards in the semis.

Note that my analysis is on the basis of all 15 players in your squad being from teams playing in the semis. In cases where people have kept up to 4 eliminated players in their squads (the worst case for keeping eliminated players), the distributions will range between (6 0 5 0) and (3 2 3 3) giving you a guaranteed valid squad size of between 4 and 9. For this reason I think that holding on to eliminated players is misguided.

I'm keeping him. Big game temperament. Champions League Final, managed to score against a packed defence as Italians will be. Gomez choked. They might bring Gomez on for the penos, or "PK shootout" as they say on ESPN!

    Rui Patrício | Zieler
Jordi Alba | Barzagli | Bonucci | Pepe | João Pereira
Busquets | Khedira | João Moutinho | Marchisio | Miguel Veloso
    Nani \ Torres | Silva

Hey guys, if we do not use all 8 transfers in the semis, can the balance of transfers roll over to the finals?

Or must all be used at the stage present?

    Thanks for your help..

Prof, you know it's roughly good. Really, waiting for the starters and tweaking is all down to you. There's nothing more anyone can add that you don't already know. Make it yours.

    Contemplating this....

    RP
    Alba Pique Pepe Hummels Boateng
    Ozil Iniesta Khedira
    Muller Podolski Pedro

Pedro a more expensive alternative to Oliviera but could get 30 mins plus if on bench especially if it goes to extra time. Expect Muller and podolski to be recalled due to experience, Klose/Gomez is tougher to call.
