Digest

The Digest – The Christmas Catch-Up

With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think some of you are getting it twisted with regards to Suarez playing on the right. He scored goals for fun at Ajax not leading the line. And look at his movement in games. He is always on the move and is at his most dangerous taking on defenders on the flanks and creating opportunities from there.

Also it's not as simplistic that you play the central role so you do all the scoring. If that was the case we would all want Torres. Suarez will continue to be as much of a goal threat imo.

Fair point, but one thing I was thinking is why does Rodgers want to do this? Surely Suarez up top is working just fine. I actually see this Sturridge signing being potentially detrimental.

unfortunately he already said he is playing central and suarez will be moving from his central role to somewhere else, possibly a winger.

I hope you're right. It introduces an uncertainty though - one that we definitely do not want while his form is so good. The reason Suarez is FPL gold at the moment is that he is absolutely the focal point - everything goes into him. If Sturridge was there, especially in the middle, he'd interfere with that.

plus suarez now has to contend with numerous wingers. Downing, sterling, ince, all fighting with suarez for his place. When he was central he had no competition.

The point is that there doesn't seem to be a way that Sturridge's presence helps Suarez's point scoring in FPL right now. I do think he will remain on the pitch, but seeing as there will be only one ball still, not sure how Sturridge is a good thing for Suarez in FPL.

It's not about competition. Suarez is not in danger of being dropped or rotated. It's about positioning and involvement with attacking play.

Suarez has scored many of his goals from wide already - the 2nd goal v Sunderland was typical of his movement - he does not stay central, he always goes out wide, his movement is exceptional - goals v QPR and 2 v Norwich were from similar wide positions.

Playing as a wide man wont make a difference, as the wide attacker is encouraged to play inside the full back and drag the defence around the park - not just stay wide and easy to mark.

It will be interesting as don't forget Borini is also due back so LFC could go from a 1 man attack to a genuine 3 man attack and have strong competition from Stirling Downing and Suso.

It could be a good New Year and Sturridge does give Liverpool good forward options with pace,. trickery and goals.

Why not load up on West Ham and Arsenal players for the double gameweek then the week after you can use your other wildcard to mould the team you want for the rest of the season

Really hope everyone starts shipping Suarez, especially if he doesn't score in a couple of these tough fixtures.

Had him since the Norwich game at 9.4, and keeping!

I got him in my wildcard at 9.4 too (along with Mata at 8.8 who I sold about 5 weeks ago to my eternal shame), if he stays central I'll keep him, if he plays wide, I'm doing Berb, Suarez > Cisse, Aguero in my WC. Not keeping him if he is playing wide/deep

Aspil and Clichy rotation risks, Demel not 100% in favour at the moment either and Wilson still few weeks away from making a comeback and no guarantees he will be straight back in the first team, too short term the defence the rest looks good though

Can't believe such high ranks with so many points hits, I'm obviously playing this game wrong. Because players have been so consistent this year it helps with the knee jerkers and point hit takers. I've taken one points hit and am ranked 80,000ish, should have been about 50,000ish but I took a horrible risk this week that didn't pay off.

The transfer window isn't over yet - but i've got a sneaking suspicion that with Ba gone Cisse might rediscover some of the spectacular form he found when he first arrived at Newcastle... particularly once Ben Arfa & Cabaye are back...

Ok, I could activate my w/c but I'm thinking I might be able to get a decent team out next gameweek.

        I have 2FT

        Mignolet (WHM)
Cuellar (WHM) Nasty (ars) Garrido (NEW) (Caulker > Someone cheap with a good fixture)
Mata (sto) Caz (MCI) Puncheon (avl) Michu (eve) (Pienaar > Fellaini (SWA) as my other FT)
RVP Aguero (see what the injury news is) Ba (maybe he starts against Stoke but if not Puncheon can play)

I could wildcard but there doesn't seem a whole lot of cash to be made and if I can hang on for the DGW it might be worth it?

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated as I'm in two minds at the minute. My team LOOKS like it could do with a reshuffle but my team for next week isn't the worst on paper.

        Thank you

Yeah you're right, it was. I still am looking at an uber cheap defence though as I find it often works out better for rotation and the disappointment is less strong when your ubers fail. Nothing worse than owning Baines through his run of 1s and 2s. You might as well own a cheapo for the same result.

True. I think there's a lot to be said for having one expensive defender and four ubers though. Can switch between the likes of Rafael, Luiz, GJ, Baines, Vert etc. for good runs of fixtures for example. Makes it easier to bring one in if they're killing it.

Using a WC when you have 2 FTs does seem a bit of a waste, especially when the majority of your team is okay. You could even take a 2 week punt on someone for Aguero if he is injured and then go ahead with your other planned changes. Three transfers only costs you four points, and it means you get to save your WC for the end of the month.

dont play your WC until they prise it from your cold dead hands, or unless you just think "I really need to play my WC now my team is a mess"

Can anouther option - that you dont play your WC yet - your team looks fine right now with a few DGW players - or is it too late?

Yeah he is only a stop gap will be looking to probably downgrade O'Brien to Wilson when he is fit, and if he recaptures his place at Stoke then can upgrade Harte or straight swap to Marriapa, no biggie just bench fodder to afford the rest of the team

In light of the recent Sturridge news (Rogers saying he'll play through centre) I've come up with the WC draft I'd like to call "The ultimate (sensible) differential!"

        Any feedback appreciated! (£0.1m bank)

        De Gea, Bunn

        Zabaleta, Gibbs, Cuellar, Wilson, Davies

        Silva, Bale, Mata, Fellaini, Puncheon

        RVP, Sturridge, Cisse

To be done after the DGW. Thoughts?

Yeah I might hit the WC after GW 24. To be fair though if he does hit a goal or two I don't want to be an early adopter, I want to already be there lapping up the differential points.

With players changing teams, positions and as I've said before, at least one spanner will be thrown into the works this weekend I fear, I may as well spend my time more productively 😎

          Sessegnon is a no imo.
Silva and Aguero is an overkill, perhaps Bale instead of Silva.
Sterling isn't a guaranteed starter now that Sturridge has signed and Borini is nearly back.

One of the better d's I've seen thankfully ignoring the nonsense for expensive defenders. Check they all start though part. Wilson and Martin.
Sess could be Bale/Mata in return for d/grading Aguero to someone like Berbs.

I think everyone's getting a bit hyper after hearing that Sturridge will play central. Suarez is much better on the right, as he drifts in quite easily. Sturridge playing through the middle will not affect Suarez's fantasy points; he will still be the main man in the team.

Also a question for non United/Liverpool/Arsenal fans, would you rather have Suarez or RVP at your football club?

RvP any day, better overall package IMO

I would think Suarez is the better overall package and RVP is the better goalscorer..

I don't know either of them, but I'd imagine (after all the racism scandal) that RvP is probably a better person to have at the club in general, the meaning of what i said was a bit ambiguous, I wasn't referring to their game, just the entire thing

I disagree. You won't find someone with more desire and will to win than Luis. Great to be on the pitch with imo.

fair play, i'd still pick RvP though, absolute razor-sharp finisher

I'm an Arsenal fan - but the only sane answer is both... lethal/genius/unplayable in totally different - but possible explosively compatible ways...

The thing that makes it interesting is all of a sudden there might be an alternative to Suarez. Suarez seems a no brainer to own because he has a monopoly of chances in a decent side. But if Sturridge were to find form and be nailed on. 7.3m looks a lot more appealing and causes Suarez to be substantially less appealing.

Beginning of season - "Suarez would perform so much better if he had better quality up front to work with."

Middle of season - "OMG! Suarez is going to perform so much worse now that he has better quality competing with him up front."

Liverpool is interested in a few players as well. Most important, Dries Mertens. If he comes in, he's an instant Premier League star and a game-changer. He's a forward coming in from the left wing and shooting from distance, so acquiring Sturridge doesn't mean he won't come to Liverpool.

On paper Villa should normally be strong in a fixture like that. Agree the form lately has sullied their reputation.

It's always so hard to predict... I guess Tottenham the first. Then Chelsea. (Then Stoke, if Benitez benches Mata again...) Then United. And from the cheaper teams, I'd say West Ham. And maybe Reading.
