Digest

The Digest – The Christmas Catch-Up

With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seems people are starting to go away from the "template" of:

    Bego (Cheap)
    2 big hitters + 3 cheapies
2 big hitters + Michu Fellaini + Cheap
    RVP + 2 more

A team like this seems very appealing to me: http://imgur.com/hjbbp

I've been bigging up that template all week, can't go wrong with it. Pick 2 defenders, one from Chelsea and one from either of the Manchester clubs and three 4.0s, and with Michu and Fell as such good value, you can easily afford to fill the rest of the team with quality.

My 2c on the Suarez situation ...

I think that as usual, the probable scenario lies between the two arguments from each side. Yes, he might not be involved in as much of Liverpool's attacking play now, especially if he is moved out wide. But Suarez moves around the pitch a lot anyway, so it's not like he will spend 90 minutes hugging the touchline.

His goals might decrease, but then he might even get more assists on the board if Sturridge can find his shooting boots. The points difference between a goal and an assist is only one as well.

    Still a good option IMO.

It's really not like you have to shoot more on CF than on a wing in a 4-3-3 formation. Just ask Real Madrid - Ronaldo has more than 3x shots of Benzema from the wing. Bale, Rooney, Fellaini - they don't play the nine and you can't say they don't have a lot of chances every game.

Sorry but all these posts about Sturridge affecting Suarez's points are stupid. The whole season everybody's been saying that he would be so much better and score more if he had more support upfront, now he has.

I fully expecting him to be close to winning the golden boot, he will definitely return significant fantasy points - if not, many more!

True, Champ. But Cisse was leading the line. That changed at the start of the season with Ba back up top. Positioning is so important. Ba was said to be out of form but I think it was more he was being played as a winger! which is really odd. And it was the same with Cisse this year...out on the wing and useless really.

Fair point. And Pardew did say pre-season ba would be back up top. Seems the Cisse price was fair but Ba's some poor judgement from fpl. Hence the early ownership difference I suppose.

It's a little complicated. Benteke even in that situation?

Assuming I am WCing after the DGW, and there are no injuries in the FA cup, would you

    A) Save the transfer this week (gives added flexibility and the option of getting 2 DGWers next week, probably Sess & Silva/Bale -> Santi & Nolan), or

    B) Sess -> Fellaini this week (then Silva/Bale -> Santi next week)

    Federici
    Gibbs, Cuellar, Hughes
    Bale, Silva, Walcott, Sess
    RVP, Suarez, Benteke

Not massively keen, but he's had a good rest and the extra game is tempting. Comes down to which scores higher?

        A) Sess (WHU) & Nolan (QPR, ars)
        B) Fellaini (SWA, sot)

Also, a bit more flexibility with A) given you can assess injuries etc after GW22, e.g. if Walcott got injured in GW22 I'd probably bring in 2 ARS players in GW23.

puyol still has class but he's getting injured a lot and i'm not sure how many years he'll play regularly for us. and mascherano is good at times but unreliable at other times like you said. and if pique and puyol are both out, then we have to play mascherano adriano or mascherano song as our center back pairing which can do in most la liga matches but won't hold up in the CL.

agreed. he wouldn't fit in and he'd mess up our attack cuz we are so much about interchanging where he doesn't do that as much. and he'd be wayyy too expensive and real would never sell him haha

don't think he'd really fit in at barca. too selfish and used to a more counter attacking side

realistically I think we need 2 or 3 players at most: another quality center back cuz puyol and pique seem to get injured too much (and we'll need a puyol replacement soonish), though giving bartra more playing time could fill this need too. perhaps another gk to challenge valdes, though I doubt this will happen. and neymar to form a lethal partnership with messi (but if we don't get him we'll be fine too)

I was kinda suprised when i saw pinto resigning with us, someone to challenge Victor would be great

I wasn't. he's been a solid backup for us. but someone to challenge valdes would be great. however i doubt we'll get someone as any keeper we get would have to be good with their feet

if we get neymar i'll be ecstatic! also i wanna get him so our rivals don't haha. how id Deufoleu? have't seen him play yet but keep hearing he's the next big thing! why hasn't he been moved up to the first team yet? is he better than tello?

very true. and valdes has made some atrocious mistakes! like the one in the first leg of the super cup this year that ended up costing us the trophy.

okay that's good to hear! gotcha. I really like tello as a player and am excited to see how he develops.

couldn't neymar play right with defoleu on the left? or vice versa? cuz that would probably be our best 3 if we got neymar. maybe cuenca or couldn't tello or pedro move out right instead? or perhaps sanchez if he can pick up his game (and finishing)

I'd rather have Vellios Parmtree. I was really impressed by him in the odd bits he played for Everton.
I know he wants regular game time to impress the Greek manager and I think he'd get it at Brighton and enough exposure for an international coach.
          I should be a scout. 😉

No offence to Mackail-Smith or Brighton but Norwich should really be looking for a slightly better striker than him, a proven Premier League striker.

Alreets lads. Reports this morning suggesting that we have had a 9.75m bid accepted for Remy. If this goes through, then its bad news for marveaux owners. No reason why he won't keep his place until Barfa comes back in february, but after that he will probably drop to the bench.

Also, pardiola has been bigging up cabeye's prospects in the No.10 position. Presumably we will play two from tiote, anita, jonas, perchinio as holding mids, allowing cabeye and the full backs plenty of freedom. Pity Cabeye is still 6.6m, if he was sub 6m he would be high on my watch list. Should be back for the Norwich game.

Once Saylor is fit, we should be fine. SImpson and Williamson are our weak links. It is imperative that we buy a quality centre back, as Saylor is injury prone and Colo getting on a bit. Williamson should only ever have to fill in the gaps on the few occaisions that we have more than one centre half out injured. He has played most games this season. hence our crap defence!

    Hi All

Here is my current Team lining up for GW 22, (already used my 1 FT this week - Torres out Saurez in - and now only £0.3m left in the bank) :

    Begovic (Jaskalinen)
    Vermalean Luiz Cuellar (Bassong) (S.Morrison)
    Michu Walcott Lennon Sterling (J.Morrison)
    Van P (C) Saurez Dzeko

Planning for next week to work it so I get Santi Carzorla in but I am worried not having Fellani for next 2 weeks will hurt, I took an 8pt hit last week to get Walcott, Lennon & Dzeko in, which boosted my score and just wondering if I should take a 8pt hit again, below transfers I was thinking :

Option 1 - Fellani in + 5 players for DGW

GW 22, Vermaelen to Gibbs or Sagna (-4) to generate cash for J.Morrison to Fellani (-4).
GW 23, Luiz to Demel or O'Brien (FT) to generate cash for Lennon to Santi Cazorla (-4)

    Option 2 - No Fellani + 5 players DGW

    GW 22, J. Morrison to Noble (-4)
GW 23, Vermaelan to Gibbs or Sagna (FT), Lennon to Santi Cazorla (-4)

Option 3 - Any other possible suggestions please?

Was all set on Ruddy -> Bunn and Silva -> Bale (-4) but with the DGW looming I’m having second thoughts.

    Bego, Ruddy
    Demel, Johnson, Nasty, Nelsen, Cuellar
    Mata, Silva, Walcott, Sterling, Puncheon
    RVP, Berba, Suarez.

Was thinking I could save transfer to have 2 for the DGW, then WC. Thoughts?

a GK transfer 2 weeks before a wildcard is a bit wasteful. Silva to bale for next GW seems sufficient. Would you have enough then for Sterling to Nolan? I like the idea of going big on the DGW then wildcarding.

I prefer your second option. Not sold on Baines (almost no clean sheet potential, historically at least), but I like the shape of a 3-4-3 with an easily benchable 5th mid and a big hitting DF or two. Zabaletta, Rafael, Vertongen, Luiz, Walker, Gibbs... the usuals. Fellaini can be walcott for a few weeks then walcott can become fellaini (or whomever).

This. Someone like Luiz maybe instead of Baines, and not Marveaux as he'll be benched soon enough (Puncheon?), but a front 8 like that means points on the bench and and a weakened defence, as well as that selection headache.
