The ScoutCast – Episode Ninety Four – Resumption

Back for 2013, fully refreshed, slightly rusty and balancing the same chips on our shoulders, Granville are I make a return to the podcast studio.

The New Year presents my beleaguered co-host with a 51-point gap to bridge as I spent Christmas “ho-ho-ing” about three midfield hat-tricks, leaving Granville to roll out one mighty miffed in this week’s episode.

Elsewhere, we pick at the double Gameweek buffet, eagerly scoffing on the Chelsea canapés whilst wondering if Rafa has hidden something nasty in the vol-a-vents. We rinse that down with the latest transfers in and out in “all aboard”, preview all the weekend fixtures and carry out the latest emergency surgery on the ailing ScoutCast team.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have a bit of a WC quandary that I could use some advice with...

I currently have to decide between having Bale (and Ruiz as 3rd striker) but with no So'ton coverage for the DGW... or taking a punt on Lambert and Ramirez and hoping they score me enough points to warrant having them in the first place, since I'll likely be taking one out next week (might keep Lambert for EVE)..

It's a classic case of DGW lure that has me fretting over the exciting potential of short-term glory versus safe and smart long term planning...

    So it's basically this...

    Michu Fellaini Walcott Mata BALE
    RVP Ba RUIZ

    OR

    Michu Fellaini Walcott Mata RAMIREZ
RVP Ba LAMBERT with 3.5m in bank

It's hard to tell if Bale is going to do well in his next 4 games, and if it wasn't for So'ton's game being against Villa this would be a much easier decision... I would love to have Bale AND Lambert but I can't do that without losing Fellaini and I don't want to do without him either...

Thanks for you thoughts on this, guys..

Not even a discussion. Your first 8 with Bale and Ruiz is a better job. Forget the possibility of DGW returns cos Saints are away to a Villa side that need to start playing well and away to Chelsea who will have Ba and a few handy midfielders and attacking defenders.

I think its worth going in with Lambert but I would seriously consider Puncheon instead of Ramirez as he could be your future 5th mid that you can bench a lot so you won't need to get rid of him quickly. Lambert could then be upgraded to Berbatov at some point perhaps (no rush though I don't think). It may become clear in time which of the 4 mids you would look to sell for Bale once he gets a good couple of fixtures lined up.

For all we know Fellaini could be sold to Chelsea by the end of the transfer window. Making a straight swap possibility.

I guess the question I have now is, do you think it's worth having Punch/Ramirez over Fellaini this week?

Everyone has a benching dilemma this week. Its impossible to avoid. Is that what you're referring too? Personally I'm starting Puncheon over Walcott

Well yeah, I'm already benching Walcott this week in a 3-4-3, so I if I did ring in Ramirez or Punch I'd still play them ahead of Theo...

The question I'm asking is, do you think it's worth it knowing that I'll probably want Fellaini back at some point...?

      Bassong, Davies, Puncheon not great

Walcott on the bench is borderline madness.

Ba as captain could be the gamble of the season. I held of bringing him in cos of Benitez being a tosser with the rotation but good luck with it!

I've thought of this myself and I would say there isn't. Especially as its still the transfer window (there may be a new CB bought) and O'Shea would eventually return. This all makes Killgallon a short to medium term punt who probably won't do well due to the injuries to Sunderland's defense.

    Turnbull (jaas)
    Baines Luiz Clyne (demel, Harte)

    Lambert / Ba / RVP

    1.4 in the bank.

Next couple of weeks I may do Puncheon > Fellaini and Lambert > Ruiz. Or get Azpi out for Cameron.

      I have
      Bego - Bunn

      Luiz Sagna Demel Davies Harte
Walcott Bale Mata Puncheon - Michu
      RVP Suarez Ba

Fairly Similar . I think we both will have to change puncheon after double gameweek. Id like see Marveaux keep his spot. Could be an interesting one

Alright fellas??? Ill be changing my name back herepretty soon in case you were all wondering.

    Anyheeeeew......

On Wildcard and have been all week. Nowt much is different today than at the start of the week really. Couple of things though, most people in my ML have WC'd this week, and we have all got almost the same team. With me being almost 200 behind the leader, and having a shocking season, with only so many weeks left (cant believe we are gw22 already), I need to start thinking outside the box a bit.

RVP. Have to have him as they all do...........or do i????

Who to keep from Mata Fellaini Michu Bale and Walcott, knowing they have 3-5 of them too.

Ba........we all have him.....worth getting Torres instead???

Last and this might be a laugh...........anyone considering Torres and Ba just in case they both get a brace or two over the next 180minutes??? Could pay off handsomely as a huge punt!

Decided to use my WC this week.... finally. Basically my defence needed to be downgraded in a few spots in order to afford the moves I want to do next week and the week after. If I don't WC i'd be taking an -8pt hit and still not have the team i really want next week either, so...

    Makes sense yeah?

O'B flag went from 75% to 25% just started to look worrying.... someone on here said he was probably not going to play DGW (or at least not 2 games) no idea if that was hot air, but the flag was worrying enough so I jumped....

Yeah they all look good cheap DEF choices to me.
I have gone with Collins from WHU. I wish Tomkins would be guaranteed start I remember he got me loads of points when they were last in the prem. Never really knew much about Demel apart from everyone on here complaining about how they were stuck with him and he never played a few GWs back.
Martin looks like great cheap choice you cant argue with 3 goals as long as you aren't expecting him to keep doing it.
          4.2 - I would go for a Reading dude.

    AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!! Changed my mind again.

Alreet lads. Been set on wildcarding for the past few days. But that was going to involve losing suarez to get what I want, and don't really want to do that just yet (got him at 9.4m). Just did a draft that would allow me to keep Suarez, but at the expense of 2 x DGW players (4.1m defender + puncheon instead of Gibbs + Nolan). So if I did that, I wouldn't gain enough from my WC to make it worthwhile. Might as well just take the 8pt hit. So the question is:

    Keep suarez, take 8 pt hit to get 3 x chelsea, 3 x arsenal, 1 x west ham (o'brian), 1 x southampton (puncheon)

Lose Suarez, use WC, to get 3 x Chelsea, 3 x arsenal, 2 x west ham (demel, nolan), 1 x southampton

Yes I agree - you can't lose £1m on a player who you only want to get rid of for one GW.

You could probably still do a good WC, but 8pts isnt too bad, but NB O'Brien looking unlikely for DGW23

Yeah. That's what i'm thinking at the moment. Its funny, as I was 99% decided on wildcarding when I went to bed last night. Doing this will allow me as much time as possible to decide whether to go forward with 3 x quality forwards or the fab five. Would hate to get rid of suarez, then decide I need him back for his nice run!

I've taken the lose Suarez option even though I'm not comfortable in doing it, can easily see him scoring at OT then he's got Norwich. Difference with me is I got him for about 10.1 I think. Just keep thinking he's already on 7 yellows & surely won't return too many more double figures in the next few weeks

I have the choice of getting mata for 4 pt hit and playing 2 defenders
      or
getting luiz as my only chelsea cover and transferring in another def for 4 pt hit

I am tempted by luiz due to mata rotation risk as well

Lambert isn't too promising an option to bring in let to captain IMO, Lallana is missing, Ramirez doubtful and Saints have been scoring less of late, plus they have been considerably weaker away (despite giving stoke's b-team defence a surprise last week)

And now, the end is near...

So after a seemingly endless week of contemplating Chelsea DGW cover, I spent my free transfer on Johnson > Luiz. This is my team then:

    Begovic
    Luiz* Olsson Sagna
    Mata* Fellaini Michu Puncheon*
    RVP Suarez Berbatov

    Subs: Foster, Walcott Demel Davies
    * = DGW cover

Good to go? Suarez > Ba (-4) is nagging me a lot, but it seems too much of a gamble given Ba isn't nailed on.
    And Suarez plays Norwich next.

walcott on bench? He will be playing cf is giroud does not start.

I've got to bench someone from that midfield as neither of the forwards are benchable. Puncheon has a DGW and crucially not against city. Surely ars v mci will be a tight game as recent fixtures have shown? I'm playing Sagna in hope of that, anyway.

I don't think the bandwagon itself will be responsible if Ba fails 😆

Check out Norwich's scoring record, particularly away. He's also not been attacking so much recently, and I never like to count on attacking points from defenders for a single gameweek. Too rare.

I've just decided against doing a WC and losing Suarez. But only because I got him at 9.4m. If you wouldn't lose to much on him, i would defenitely consider the Ba switch. I would be more fearful of Ba this week than Mata. I guess you don't have to cash to do Berba > Ba?

No, not entirely sure I'd want to anyway given that I think Berba will outscore Suarez and quite possibly tear Wigan a new one! Suarez's explosiveness does worry me though. If united attack and leave holes at the back I could be in trouble. But if they play a compact 4-4-2 as they increasingly have against skilled teams, not so much. Given they're at home and the favourite, they might do the former...

    Pilkington and Beausejour...

Pilkington plays for Norwich who don't score that many and is in a price bracket with few substitutes.
Beausejour is a wing back who plays for Wigan.

I wouldn't be worried about either of them.

I hope you are right... but I did have a feeling about those two...

There was some logic behind it... both score the majority of points at home, and I fancy Wigan to come good again second half of the season... and Norwich won 4-2 v Newcastle last year...

I won't be that upset if they both do well, cos there is no way I can or would have considered them over Michu Fellani Walcott Mata and Bale...

I wouldnt touch clichy, 5.6 for a sack of shit that gets rotated is a waste of money, if it has to be a city defender then Zab is the man but what about Azpi at Chelsea?

Ruiz is a good player but 5.4 for a player that you'll bench every week is too much.

Get Pog and swap Gibbs -> Sagna so you can get a better keeper than feder/cerny

I'm leaning towards giving the armband to Ba rather than Mata. If I do, then is there an argument for not spending 4pts on getting Mata in the first place? Especially as it would be for Santi who I would want straight back next week.

Captain Ba, play Mata -- peace of mind while trusting your gut at a cost of only 4 pts? Not bad.

Don't have Mata though. Planning on getting him in for a hit. But not sure if it is worth it if I won't be giving him the arm band

Right -- was focusing more on the ownership/captain % of Mata -- do you really want everyone else to be getting his points? -4 seems like okay damage control.

In that scenario I'd say it's not worth bringing in Mata, not enough upside. The immediate transfer back out makes it hard to justify too.

I'd probably only spend it if I were keeping him for longer than one week, but I think Mata ends up seeing more minutes than Torres this DGW (I peeked in Rafa's notebook)

Suarez against United. Are there goals there?

What kind of game are we expecting from united? This season so far when they're up against good attacking sides they've played 4-4-2 on the counterattack with pace on the wings in Valencia and Young, Rooney in the hole. They did this away to City, Chelsea and Arsenal. Will they do this at home to Liverpool? How did they play in the reverse fixture this season? I seem to recall they played a 4-2-3-1 with Kagawa and were outplayed until Shelvey's red.

(Since Rooney is out they will have to either replace him with Hernandez/Welbeck alongside RVP, or play Kagawa in a 4-2-3-1 again)

I know, and I don't think it's been a fluke, the fullbacks and midfielders move up so far that the defence is exposed on the counterattack - even watching them at home to Qpr's B-team you could see the number of times the defence got run at. They also lack ball winners in midfield, too lightweight.

I'd just like confirmation that selling Suarez for Ba is not going to work out...

My prediction. Kagawa behind RVP in a midfield 5.
      Valencia and Young wide.

Sturridge through the middle for 61 minutes.

Suarez on the left of a front 3. Specifically there to rip the shite out of Rafael, cut inside and create havoc.
A fluid front 3, mind you. With Downing interchanging with Suarez. Sterling will come on for Sturridge after 61 mins to utilise his pace to the full (for the first time this season).

I'm sooooo looking forward to it.

I'm hugely looking forward to it too (as a lifelong ABU) and your prediction sounds pretty plausible.

Two great attacking teams up against each other. I love Liverpool's Barça-esque 4-3-3, they have played football considerably better than 8th place and are finally delivering on it.

What's with downing playing in the front three? How has this donkey ended up being useful in a fluid, intelligent attack?

I love the prospect of Suarez Sturridge Sterling. The SSS, if you inappropriately will!

Pretty simple. Downing has found his "crossing" boots. Dangerous balls in. Having decent efforts on goal. He's finding some serious form. (maybe not in FPL)
He stays in the first 11 for now. Despite all the naysayers.

Just hard to believe we are looking at the same player I have watched and been bemused by since he signed. My assumption all along has been that he has been fulling in where Liverpool are short of players so I assume Borini/Sterling will replace him at some point?

You know what, I reluctantly sold him, even though I fancied him to get a goal here...

Much could depend on his new role, however, but I don't see Rodgers changing it here, not in a game of this magnitude... so it's likely he'll be up top... and with his pace I fancy him to sneak in behind and tap in a Gerrard through ball...

Utd will still be too much for them, though... 2-1...

In the scoutcast they also find it hard to see Sturridge being thrown in, but bearing in mind Rodgers said in his interview (guardian one about Sturridge playing central) that he'd been talking to Suarez for weeks before the transfer about how they'll play with Sturridge, plus a few Liverpool fans seeing a start from him, I'm ready to be surprised

I predict United to start with Hernandez and RVP, Cleverly and Carrick in the middle with Tony and Young on the wings. They will force liverpool backwards for the first 20 mins and take a 1 or 2 goal lead. Scholes, Kagawa will come on after 60 mins to help control/kill the game.
Liverpool have failed every serious test they've had this season, cant see them passing this one.
      United to win 3-1.

bollockkks. We outplayed United AND city at Anfield and Everton and Chelsea away, and got robbed on all occasions by terrible luck and/ or refereeing mistakes.

The only "serious test" we failed was Arsenal at home and Tott away, where we were terrible.

        Get your facts straight.

          Youre a muppet mate.
Liverpools results are abysmal this season, absolutely atrocious.
Lost to Udinese, Aston Villa, Swansea, Stoke, West Brom

Outplayed nobody. You have to outscore teams. maybe you weaved some pretty patterns V United and a few other teams but you got the result you deserved cos when the big boys came at yous whan they had their spell on top, you couldnt hack it, conceded and lost.

Every major test has been failed. That is a fact. Big clubs dont concede 3 goals to Villa, Swansea and Stoke and languish midtable thinking theyre passing tests
          You are a friggin muppet

All plausible, but there is a point at which a team in transition becomes a team in form and I think Pool might be there. They didn't play badly at all in the first match.
