Season Review

Team of the Season – Luis Suarez

For all his undoubted talents, Luis Suarez had failed to really flourish as a Fantasy force until Brendan Rodgers rolled up to Merseyside. Arriving at Liverpool midway through the 2010/11 campaign from Dutch outfit Ajax, the Uruguayan had delivered just 15 goals and 11 assists in a season-and-a-half and was resultantly priced at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) before last term got underway:

While previous boss Kenny Dalglish seemed determined to forge an up-front partnership between Suarez and £35m signing Andy Carroll, Rodgers decided to cut his losses and farmed the big Geordie out to West Ham on loan. Installed as the lone striker in a 4-3-3 system, Suarez thrived from a more possession-based style of play and finally became a serious contender for our three man front lines until the decision to sink his teeth into the arm of Branislav Ivanovic ended his season abruptly.

The Statistics

Initially, Suarez was slow out the blocks as Liverpool struggled with a new change in tactics. By the end of Gameweek 5, the Reds had picked up just two points and found the net on just four occasions; although the Uruguayan had managed to notch twice – at home to City and at Sunderland – faith in his Fantasy potential had already taken a dive, as his FPL price slipped to 9.4 by the time Rodgers’ team rolled up to Carrow Road in Gameweek 6.

Away to Norwich, however, Suarez served up a sensational hat-trick and assist as the Reds ran riot in a 5-2 win. With the maximum FPL bonus points also accrued, the Uruguayan registered a 20 point haul and kicked off a run which produced returns in six of seven appearances –with eight goals, four assists and 10 bonus points picked up over that period, the bandwagon quickly hit top speed as Fantasy managers juggled budgets in order to find him a place alongside Robin Van Persie in their front three.

Even the arrival of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea in the winter transfer window failed to dent his potential. Suarez was initially shifted to “the hole” as Liverpool trialled a 4-2-3-1 system with the former Chelsea man leading the line but when Rodgers reverted to a 4-3-3, Sturridge found himself reprising his Stamford Bridge role of bench-warmer again.

Then came Gameweek 34. Prior to the home clash with Liverpool, the press mainly focussed on Rafa Benitez’s return to Anfield but by the time the final whistle blew, it was all about Suarez. The biting incident with Ivanovic resulted in a second lengthy ban for the Uruguayan as his uncanny ability to hog the headlines for all the wrong reasons earned him a 10-match ban.

Despite accusations of inconsistency, Suarez managed to deliver attacking points in 19 of his 33 appearances last time out, with eight double figure returns an example of his explosive potential. With 23 goals, 10 assists and 34 bonus points to his name, he finished the season on 212 points – joint third overall with Juan Mata and second top forward behind Van Persie.

The Prospects

With six games of his suspension still left to serve, Suarez may still have a significant effect on how we assess the Fantasy landscape for the season ahead. Crucially, much depends if he’s still at Anfield when the player price lists are revealed in July – with Suarez still in the mix, Fantasy games are likely to afford him a premium price in spite of his remaining ban, whereas if he’s already left, Sturridge would then be seen as the club’s number one forward and be valued accordingly.

It’s believed Suarez has a clause in his contract which forces Liverpool to listen to any bid in excess of £40m and at a press conference in his homeland last week, he made his intentions of engineering a move away from Merseyside clear, citing the British press as key to his decision:

“It is a difficult moment for me. My coach and my colleagues know that they [the media] didn’t treat me well. Because of the paparazzi I could not go in my garden, I could not go to the supermarket. My reason for leaving is not the money. It’s my family and image. I don’t feel comfortable here anymore.”

With the likes of Real Madrid already linked with a move for his services, it may well be that we’ve seen the last of Suarez on these shores. Certainly, if he remains at Anfield, his form over the previous campaign suggests a price tag of around the 12.0 mark in FPL would be on the cards but with Van Persie’s consistency far superior, the Liverpool forward would perhaps struggle to find a place in many squads, given that plenty will also be earmarking Gareth Bale for their midfields.

From a Fantasy perspective, then, the ideal scenario would be for Suarez to exit Anfield after the price lists are rolled out. As mentioned above, such a scenario should see Sturridge handed a more budget friendly price tag – a potential cost in the region of 9.5 would still look strong value for a player who racked up 10 goals, five assists and eight bonus points in just 14 appearances for Rodgers’ side.

Having scored five goals, an assist and five bonus points in four games without Suarez, Sturridge’s exceptional end to the previous campaign is highly encouraging but, according to reports, he may be facing up to four months on the sidelines with an ankle problem sustained in England’s friendly draw with Republic of Ireland last week. With Carroll also expected to depart Merseyside, Sturridge certainly has the potential to become a major player across the Fantasy games next time around but if the early prognosis proves correct, Rodgers will certainly look to revitalise his forward options before entertaining the idea of Suarez departing Anfield.

Encouragement from the TWS chat spurned me to repost this :P. Very last thing on the previous article.

I’d like to start off by saying this is just my opinion, none are facts or anything, so don’t attack me .

I think homecrowd is a bad idea. Why?
    - The reputation means that whoever posts lineups first will get loads of rep (*cough* Demi) for something that, in all honesty, is quite unworthy. Reputation should be given for actual contribution, not providing a lineup 10 seconds earlier than people can actually get if they really wanted to. I feel this system will be poorly handled by the community, including myself possibly.

    - Reputation invites popularity contests. While it’s good for the people at the top, those that don’t have any/many are left to have comments that aren’t seen as much as the high rep people. This feature just makes it even more difficult for lower people, as, in essence, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. High rep members get their comments seen easier, leading to more rep. Lower comments will stay at the bottom. Obviously it could easily turn out to be fine, but it’s still a possibility.

    - What’s wrong with the current system? Seriously, i don’t see a problem. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I would like to say this isn’t a complaint, just thoughts I’d like to share. I support the change as much as any in terms of willing to give it a go, and having not been part of the testing perhaps my views aren’t educated enough to hold true value.

Im also sorry if this has been brought up before, I wasn't around for testing and stuff

The biggest problem with the current system is that quality posts, ones that provoke a lot of interesting discussion, get drowned in the noise of less important conversations. And when the comments roll onto a new page, a good post gets left behind and forgotten. The point of HC is to make it easier to get to the quality, whenever it was posted, and keep it rolling.

I think everyone is mindful of the risk of self-perpetuating cliques forming and the mods will use their powers to curb them.

There's a burden of responsibility on everyone to use their votes wisely, but if any of the admin or mods think that a post has been unfairly neglected then a vote from them goes a long way to boosting it's rating. (The same applies to downvoting an unjustly popular comment but I don't see that happening too often)

That is a good thing though. I value quality analysis and good humour on here. Also you can't dictate a response from people. You just have to accept if people decide to vote one post higher than another.

There's no mechanism which ensures that comments from high-rep posters appear higher up the page. Each new comment begins with a zero rating and is then rated up or down by the community - it's no harder for a new poster to achieve a prominent comment which gets stickied/hot topiced than it is for anybody else on the site.

Mark and others will be very closely monitoring voting patterns and neutralising any abuse of the system anyway. This won't be visible to the community but rest assured, having tested this out I really can't see any opportunities for abuse.

Folk are taking the reputation far too seriously. The fact is, reputation is hidden and has only one real-world impact - it adds weight to a vote. Other than that, it has no effect.

Posters won't rack up reputation without us monitoring it and we will be tweaking levels and awards behind the scenes to ensure it's all balanced. When a user jumps to level 2 it will be because they deserve to, not because they've grinded out votes without merit.

If folk gain reputation behind the scenes and we don't think its warranted and they are gaining too much influence with their vote, it takes a second for us to edit their reputation accordingly. We set the thresholds for reputation, we set the value of vote in terms of earning reputation and we control who goes up and down the reputation levels. By hiding reputation, we can manage this without the risk of users attempting to farm it.

What the reputation does give us is the ability to give the responsibility to the community to help us find and acknowledge good content and to flag content that warrants attention from moderators. That should be invaluable. Users who regularly contribute stuff and earn votes will be allowed to gain the reputation levels required to help us lift good content - that's the way it should be - good posters, acknowledging other good posters.

Aside from what you guys will see as users, behind the scenes, the existing system is just woeful in terms of tools available to help us manage the community. HomeCrowd is a massive jump in this respect - the fact we have moderators just wouldn't have been possible under the current system. That in itself is a huge positive which will help us improve the community "feel".

I want to make a comment on your point about stickied high rep posts being at the top causing the richer get richer etc.

This depends on what you sort the comments by. You can sort if by discussion rating, stickies or as the default 'date' which is the same as it is here. I suspect many people will sort by date and thus nothing much will change from how the comments work now.

Al Pacino, I think you may be pleasantly surprised when it launches. The new layout will make it easier for you to see and find the posts you want to read, through your profile search and the variety of ways you can view posts. It will also make it easier for people to see your quality posts.

One of the ways that a post will be seen more easily will be for it to be stickied or hot topiced and that is down to the FFS mods and contributors to decide. We are not looking at that from a popularity contest angle but from a 'is this interesting to the community' angle.

And also be assured we monitor voting to ensure that people are voting positively for those posting interesting comments that deserve a wider audience rather than dishing up and down votes willy nilly. The aim is that high rep community members will have a high rep because they are interesting, funny and provide great contributions to the community.

        Grammar pedantry alert:

'Hot topic' is a noun not a verb. Using it as a verb is a transgression against the English language. Please please please can you find another way to describe the action of making a post into a hot topic? 🙂

Firstly, thank you all for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. Would take too much time to respond individually now, and I fear i may repeat myself.

I understand now that the moderators have a big say in the reputation, which will undoubtedly help significantly, when I had assumed that the rep would be left to its own devices.

I feel rather silly now, I'm sure if i'd have been part of the testing I would've realised a lot of this before now. While I don't feel the negatives have been cancelled out, I do see the fact that the positives are far greater than I originally thought. I'm also glad that behind the scenes it is easier to manage, it is your site so fair enough if you want to make it simpler to run.

It's all good. CrowdControl is the admin tool that runs HomeCrowd and nobody, barring a few contributors have seen that. You weren't to know what tools we have but, if you saw CrowdControl, I think you'd realise that we have a great deal of control on how voting and reputation works and a good few measures for keeping it in check.

No need to feel silly in the slightest - it's a step into the unknown for everyone really so there will inevitably be concerns, hopefully these can be allayed quickly but I think all that's really required is for people to go into the new system with an open mind and with any luck the benefits will be self evident 🙂

Good to hear, obviously nothing is certain until it's implemented but the reassurance has been fantastic.

Can i also say what a wonderful team here, although people such as Mark may not be commenting particularly often, when required he steps up and addresses situations. The fact that several team members replied assuring me that HC will be better than my post suggests, really shows the community we have here 🙂

It's a new start, not only in terms of HomeCrowd but in terms of the attention we want to give the community. That's why we've brought Jonty on board to manage things and recruited the moderators to help him. Regardless of HomeCrowd and any teething problems we have, these guys will help improve things no end, I'm sure.

If this turned out to be true then i am sorry but who even is in charge of signings at city is an imbecile or has simply been on the lash for two years.

      De Jong out for Garcia/rodwell
      Johnson out for Sinclair
      Nasri out for navas
      Maicon

The only positive me really in the last two years is:
      Savic to nastasic

There are two games happening at the moment. The U21's and the TRansfer Simulation game. Why can't they coincide on this site at the same time? Why should one be banished to another thread. Arguably more people could be playing the transfer game.

Not so sure about that Isacki.

Mark has stated that he wants a coherent forum for all visitors at all times.

And new people coming into the forum looking towards next season would be confused or put off by post after post of Transfer talk.

I'd say Lukaku will be nailed-on. Mourinho's bound to give him his chance til January at least even if he signs a top striker. Ba or Torres won't win him the league. If he doesn't try Lukaku hopefully Rodgers will use his Mourinho and Chelsea ties to buy him or get him on loan. Optimistic me 😉

Will pre-season tell us more about his favourites? I remember placing a lot of stock in the last pre-season only to find that it was valueless. Apparent favourites were immediately benched when it came to the PL.
